The man said he took this matter up with the app’s customer support team.

New Delhi:

A man in Delhi recently ordered chicken biryani through a food delivery app but found himself at the receiving end of a moral lecture, all served fresh by the delivery agent who told him: “Chicken and mutton only after Diwali.”

Expecting biryani but getting life advice, a Reddit user recounted that the delivery agent, upon dutifully delivering the order, lingered to offer up not just the OTP, but also a serving of unrequested opinion.

“What you are doing is not right,” the delivery agent allegedly said in Hindi. “Eat chicken and mutton only after Diwali and consume something clean till then.”

Caught off-guard, the Reddit user claimed he simply froze with a guilty smile. “What could I even say? Why does he care anyway?” was his inward lament.

The anecdote only gets juicier. After receiving the unsolicited advice, the Reddit user claimed the intervention left him wondering if his biryani might have had an unwelcome additional “ingredient” in it, courtesy of the aggrieved delivery man.

“What should I do? I have his number and name, he knows my home, if I report him he might make a scene,” he wrote.

Weird shit happened today

The man’s post quickly went viral on Reddit, receiving over 2,000 upvotes and triggering an online debate.

“Why is he rubbing his belief on you? Ask him not to deliver chicken then!” commented one user.

“Man this was one of my biggest fears – this kind of moral policing,” wrote another.

The man wrote in the comments that he took this matter up with the app’s customer support team.

Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) soared to 359 as people defied a ban on firecrackers on Diwali

New Delhi:

The air quality in Delhi worsened this morning as people defied a ban on firecrackers during Diwali celebrations on Thursday.

The relentless bursting of firecrackers caused severe noise pollution and blanketed the national capital in dense smoke with residents flouting the restrictions till late at night.

According to the real-time data provided by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) soared to 359 at 6:30 am, which falls under the “very poor” category. The AQI on the morning of Diwali was at 328.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, 401 and 450 severe, and above 450 severe-plus.

The AQI level in most of the 40 monitoring stations in the city remained in the “very poor” category with Anand Vihar and RK Puram reporting the worst air quality index of 395.

Burari Crossing (394), Sonia Vihar (392), Punjabi Bagh (391), North Campus (390), Bawana (388), Jahangirpuri (387), Rohini (385), Ashok Vihar (384), and Nehru Nagar (381) were some other places with the “very poor” air quality

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, has said that the air quality in the national capital is likely to be in the “very poor” category (AQI 300 to 400) on Friday.

On Diwali eve, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced that 377 teams were formed to enforce the ban on firecrackers across the capital. A senior Delhi Police officer had said all deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) were asked to form dedicated teams to ensure that firecrackers are not burst in their respective districts.

Last year, the “festival of lights” was celebrated on November 12 and Delhi recorded its best air quality on Diwali day in eight years, with the average AQI at 218.

Stubble burning or farm fires in neighbouring Haryana and Punjab, especially during the post-harvest season of October and November, are also often blamed for the rise in pollution levels in Delhi.

Delhi Air Quality: In Anand Vihar, the AQI level was recorded in the “severe” category

New Delhi:

Delhi and neighbouring areas woke up to a thick layer of smog this morning, and the air quality index (AQI) remained in the “very poor” category despite various anti-pollution measures. According to the real-time data provided by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the AQI on the morning of Diwali was recorded at 328, which falls under the “very poor” category.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, 401 and 450 severe, and above 450 severe-plus.

In Anand Vihar, which is one of the 40 monitoring stations in the national capital, the AQI level was recorded at 419 and remained in the “severe” category.

The air quality remained “very poor” in other areas like Alipur, \Ashok Vihar, Aya Nagar, Bawana, Burari, Dwarka, IGI Airport (T3), Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Narela, Okhla, Patparganj, Punjabi Bagh, Rohini, RK Puram, Rohini, Vivek Vihar, Shadipur, Sonia Vihar, and Wazirpur.

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune said the air quality is likely to be in the “very poor” category on Thursday and Friday, but may also reach the severe category in case of additional emissions from firecrackers and stubble or waste fires.

Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services told the news agency PTI that on Diwali, pollution levels are likely to rise as winds have shifted from south-southeast to northwesterly, which may carry smoke from stubble burning into the city.

“If firecrackers are also burst, the altered wind direction could further trap pollutants, worsening the air quality,” he said.

Strict Measures In Delhi On Diwali

As many as 377 teams have been formed to enforce the ban on firecrackers across the national capital on Diwali, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has said.

A senior Delhi Police officer has said all deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) have been asked to form dedicated teams to ensure that firecrackers are not burst in their respective districts.

The capital has been breathing hazardous air quality for the past few weeks, prompting authorities to impose stage two of the GRAP or the Graded Response Action Plan last week.

Under stage two, there will be restrictions on the use of coal and firewood as well as diesel generator sets in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

Amavasya falling on Diwali is considered to be auspicious.

One of the biggest festivals in India – Diwali – is around the corner, but one question has confused everyone, When is it? Some say it is on October 31, while some say it’s the next day, November 1.

Diwali Puja is typically performed on the festival’s main day, which falls on the new moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. The Panchang, an ancient Hindu calendar, determines the auspicious timing

According to the Hindu calendar, Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya in the month of Kartik. This year, confusion has risen over the exact date of the celebration, as Amavasya falls on two consecutive days. Amavasya is expected to begin at 3:55 pm on October 31 and last until 6:15 pm on November 1.

Amavasya falling on Diwali is considered to be auspicious. Some experts say it will be celebrated on October 31, 2024, when the Amavasya night occurs. Meanwhile, a report on Business Standard said, Diwali will be celebrated on November 1 this year, according to more than 150 scholars. The decision was announced after a meeting in Indore, where hundreds of priests and experts had gathered to determine the most appropriate date for this year’s festivities.

The Amavasya Tithi for Diwali 2024 begins on October 31 at 3:52 P.M. and concludes on November 1 at 6:16 pm. People can celebrate the festival on both days and this year celebrations will last for six days.

Key dates related to Diwali 2024:

October 29 – Dhanteras
October 30 – Choti Diwali
October 31/ November 1 – Diwali celebrations
November 2 – Goverdhan Puja
November 3 – Bhai Dooj

The Diwali pujanot only celebrates the return of Lord Rama from Lanka after defeating demon king Ravana (according to Ramayana) but is also a way to pray for prosperity, good luck, and good health all year long. The Diwali Puja begins with thorough cleaning and decorating of the house.

During Diwali, the act of lighting lamps and candles represents the dispelling of darkness (ignorance, ego, and negative thoughts), not only in our homes but also in our souls.

New Delhi:

Celebrations sparkled up the Times Square in New York City yesterday as the Indian community and several US citizens gathered to observe the Hindu festival of lights.

The event featured performances from various cultural groups. Among the notable attendees were Mayor Eric Adams, New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar, Senator Chuck Schumer and Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan. Ms Rajkumar has been a key advocate for recognizing Diwali as a school holiday in the USA throughout.

Mayor Adams took to social media platform X (formerly, Twitter) to address the event.

“Proud to be with our Hindu brothers and sisters today for the annual Diwali at Times Square celebration as we push away the darkness and welcome in light all across our city,” he wrote.

The official Twitter account of the Consulate General of India, New York also shared pictures of the glamourous celebrations on social media.

Neeta Bhasin, founder of Diwali at Times Square, also played an instrumental role during the celebration. The festivities culminated in a ceremonial lighting of diyas (lamps), symbolizing hope and renewal.

Diwali has been celebrated in the heart of New York City since 2013. As attendees gathered to witness this moment, they were reminded of the festival’s core values and its ability to unite diverse communities.

Diwali has also been officially recognized as a school holiday in New York City last year. About 4.4 million Indian origin people reside in the US with persons of Indian origin constituting the third largest Asian ethnic group in the US, according to ANI. New York, San Francisco and Chicago metropolitan areas are places in the USA which have the highest population of the Indian community in the country.

Another event to commemorate Diwali was organised by the Indian Consulate in Pennsylvania.

Deputy Consul General Varun Jeph joined the Diwali celebrations by the Khalsa Asian American Association along with members of the Indian and Asian American community.

While the festive spirit, through such events and recognitions, continues to exhibit an attempt at endeavours towards fostering a spirit of unity and equality, the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI)’s recent report showed another side of South Asian experiences. As reported by Reuters, the AAPI study shows that South Asian people in the US have been facing alarmingly high levels of hate ahead of the 2024 elections, which transcends not just to the common people but also to heavyweights such as Kamala Harris, and Usha Vance. Such celebrations of South Asian festivities thus do their bit in bringing together the diverse communities in a dazzling show of vibrant unity across the globe.

Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a video message to ‘the attendees, emphasizing the festival’s role in promoting unity and goodwill. He stated that Diwali serves as a reminder of the victory of good over evil and the importance of knowledge over ignorance. He has also highlighted the importance of the Indian community in the US and referred to them as a ‘living bridge’ connecting the two places. Diwali falls on November 1st this year.

Air passengers might have a reason to smile this Diwali season as average airfares on many domestic routes have dropped 20-25% compared to the year-ago period, according to an analysis.

Increased capacity and the recent fall in oil prices are considered to be among the factors for the fall in air ticket prices.

The analysis by travel portal ixigo showed that average airfare on the domestic routes has declined in the range of 20-25%.

The prices are for one-way average fare on a 30-day APD (advanced purchase date) basis.

For 2023, the time period considered is November 10-16, while it is October 28-November 3 for this year. This is the time around Diwali.

The maximum decline of average airfare is 38% for a Bengaluru-Kolkata flight to ₹ 6,319 this year from ₹ 10,195 last year, as per the analysis.

The ticket price on the Chennai-Kolkata route has fallen 36% to ₹ 5,604 from ₹ 8,725.

The average airfare for a Mumbai-Delhi flight has dropped 34% to ₹ 5,762 from ₹ 8,788. Similarly, there is a 34% decrease in ticket prices on the Delhi-Udaipur route to ₹ 7,469 from ₹ 11,296.

The decline is 32% on Delhi-Kolkata, Hyderabad-Delhi, and Delhi-Srinagar routes.

“Last year, airfares around Diwali had surged due to limited capacity, primarily driven by the suspension of Go First airline. However, this year we’ve seen some relief as additional capacity has been added since then, leading to a 20-25% YoY (year-on-year) dip in average airfares across key routes for the last week of October,” ixigo Group CEO Aloke Bajpai told PTI.

According to him, the decline in oil prices, down 15% this year, may have also contributed to this downward trend, offering travellers more affordable options during the festive season.

Currently, oil prices are slightly on the upward trajectory amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Meanwhile, there has been a hike in airfares of up to 34% on certain routes.

While the ticket price has jumped 34% on the Ahmedabad-Delhi route to ₹ 8,758 from ₹ 6,533, the rise is 33% on the Mumbai-Dehradun route to ₹ 15,527 from ₹ 11,710, the analysis showed.
