Devon Conway in action© AFP

Opener Devon Conway will miss the third Test against England, New Zealand cricket said Monday, clearing the way for the return of unwanted batter Will Young. The out-of-touch Conway is awaiting the birth of his first child so won’t join the Black Caps squad in Hamilton, where the final Test of the series begins on Saturday. England hold an unassailable 2-0 lead after winning the second Test in Wellington on Sunday by 323 runs. Conway’s place in the squad will be taken by middle-order batter Mark Chapman but the more experienced Young is likely to be promoted to the starting XI.

Young was a contentious omission from the first two England Tests following a consistent run of scores during New Zealand’s 3-0 sweep of India in October and November, scoring 244 runs at an average just short of 50.

He made way for the returning Kane Williamson for the England Tests after Williamson missed the Indian tour with injury.

Conway has been out of form, having failed to score a century for nearly two years.

The 33-year-old has been dismissed for scores of 2, 8, 11 and 0 in the England series.

Young, 32, batted at number three throughout the India series but has predominantly played as an opener throughout his 19-Test career.

Indian cricket team wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant is well known for his witty comments from behind the stumps and his hilarious comment has once again gone viral on Day 1 of the second Test match against New Zealand in Pune on Thursday. With Devon Conway going strong against the Indian bowlers, Pant decided to boost the morale of the team by coming up with a brilliant ‘body language’ remark. “Chalo chalo dheela nahi hona, body language uthana padega bhaiyo (Come on, we need to up the body language),” he was caught saying on the stump mic as Ravichandran Ashwin was bowling.

Half-centuries from Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra did their damage, however, timely scalps from spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar pulled back momentum to the hosts at tea.

At the end of the second session, NZ was 201/5, with Daryl Mitchell (16*) unbeaten.

NZ started the second session at 92/2, with Conway (47*) and Rachin Ravindra (5*) unbeaten.

Conway attacked Jasprit Bumrah in the very first over of the session, getting three fours. He reached his second half-century of the series in 109 balls, with six fours.

NZ reached the 100-run mark in 31.4 overs through one of Conway’s classy boundaries.

Conway continued to see off the Indian bowling with confidence and a brilliant temperament, giving Rachin enough time to settle. However, their 62-run partnership was ended with Ravichandran Ashwin getting Conway for 76 in 141 balls, with 11 fours. NZ was 138/3 in 43.2 overs.

Daryl Mitchell joined Rachin on the crease. NZ reached the 150-run mark in 48.1 overs, thanks to a massive six over long-on by Rachin against Ravindra Jadeja.

Rachin continued his impressive run in Test cricket, bringing up his fourth fifty in 93 balls, with three fours and a six.

After reaching his half-century, Rachin started to look even more dangerous, collecting two boundaries against Akash Deep, who seemed to be having an off day with a poor economy rate.

Washington Sundar cleaned up Rachin with an absolute peach of a delivery for 65 in 105 balls, with five fours and a six. NZ was 197/4 in 59.1 overs at the end of the 59-run partnership between Rachin and Mitchell.

NZ reached the 200-run mark in 61.3 overs. A sharp, turning delivery from Sundar removed Tom Blundell for three. NZ was 201/5 heading into tea break.

Earlier, Ashwin struck twice while Conway took on world-class Indian bowling bravely in an evenly-contested first session on day one of the second Test between India and New Zealand at Pune’s MCA stadium on Thursday.

At the end of the session one, NZ was 92/2, with Conway (47*) and Ravindra (5*) unbeaten.

After New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss, openers skipper Tom Latham and Devon Conway gave the Kiwis a cautious start.

Early in the innings, Latham and Conway took on Akash’s pace really well, making him a primary target with four classy boundaries. Jasprit Bumrah was really economic on the other hand.

Things changed with the introduction of spin. Ravichandran Ashwin struck in his first over, trapping Latham leg-before wicket for 15 runs in 22 balls. His knock had two boundaries. Kiwis were 39/1 in 7.5 overs. Latham continued his poor run against Ashwin, getting dismissed by him for the ninth time in 11 innings, in which he has made just 128 runs against the veteran at a poor average of 14.22.

Will Young joined Conway and NZ reached the 50-run mark in 15.1 overs.

Both were just stitching a partnership, braving some tight bowling from the spin trio of Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. However, Young edged one to Rishabh Pant, giving Ashwin his second scalp. NZ was 76/2 in 24 overs, with Young gone for 18 in 45 balls.

Conway and Rachin Ravindra took NZ through the remainder of the first session without any further loss.

All-rounder Washington Sundar justified his selection with a career-best 7/59 to help India bowl out New Zealand for 259, but the hosts lost skipper Rohit Sharma early in their first innings when stumps were drawn on day of the second Test, here on Thursday. India crawled to 16 for one in 11 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal (6 not out) and Shubman Gill (10 not out) at the crease, trailing by another 243 runs in the first innings. Tim Southee cleaned up Rohit for a nine-ball duck, forcing the hosts to be extra cautious with the debacle of first innings in the Bengaluru Test still fresh in the mind.

Rohit, who was cleaned up for the third time in the series and for the second time by Southee, was squared up as he looked to defend in the line of the delivery but the ball moved away to beat his outside edge and crash into the off-stump.

Southee thus became the first among fast bowlers to take a wicket in this Test after a dominating show by the Indian spin duo of Sundar and R Ashwin (3/64), who did not allow New Zealand to break free.

The 25-year-old Sundar, playing his first Test for India since March, 2021, ran through New Zealand after Ashwin claimed the first three wickets in the innings to move past his Australian peer Nathan Lyon in the list of highest wicket-takers in Tests.

Ashwin began by trapping New Zealand captain Tom Latham (15) in front of the wickets and getting Will Young (18) caught behind in the first session, while Sundar took the centrestage towards the end of the second.

While he was measly to begin with as New Zealand batters looked to consolidate, Sundar reaped rich dividends for his perseverance.

He swung the momentum in India’s favour with two late wickets in the second session, including the in-form Rachin Ravindra, as New Zealand stumbled to 201/5 at tea.

Ravindra’s dismissal close to the tea break proved instrumental as New Zealand could never recover from the blow and folded in the final session without much resistance.

The young batter looked primed for another big knock but Sundar’s brilliance stopped him in his tracks.

Of his seven dismissals in an outstanding spell on a day one wicket, Sundar showed mastery in hitting the off-stump to snare five of his victims bowled, one pinned in front of the wickets while the other caught by fellow tweaker Ashwin.

Among those who were cleaned up by the Indian spinner were Ravindra, Tom Blundell (3), Mitchell Santner (33), Tim Southee (5) and Ajaz Patel (4).

The highlight, however, was the manner in which he cleaned up the in-form Ravindra, who looked good after his efforts of 134 and 39 not out in New Zealand’s eight-wicket win in the opening Test.

Sundar pitched the ball just perfectly to have it spinning away from Ravindra’s bat and crash into the off-stump, beating the in-form batter fair and square who had otherwise struck a perfect balance in attack and defence.

At the top, Conway managed 76 from 141 balls with 11 fours but he was among Ashwin’s three wickets at the top.

The Kiwis’ opener used his reverse sweeps against the spinners and drives down the wicket against the Indian pacers to good effect to accumulate his runs, but he had only himself to blame for missing out on scoring a century again.

On an innocuous delivery outside off, Conway went for a stroke but got an edge to be caught behind off Ashwin.

New Zealand’s problems compounded when off-colour batters in skipper Latham and Mitchell continued to struggle for runs despite spending considerable time in the middle.

Recently, Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the Telangana government. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made the announcement that Siraj would be granted a Group-I government post for his service to the Indian team, including the T20 World Cup success earlier this year. The DSP reference made its way on the first day of the India vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 2.

According to several reports, Sunil Gavaskar made a cheeky reference after Siraj was involved in a sledging incident with New Zealand’s Devon Conway. Though the incident did not escalate much,  Gavaskar, who was commentating, reportedly said: “Don’t forget that he’s a DSP now. I wonder if he was given a salute by the teammates.”

The mighty India succumbed to their lowest total at home on a rare off day in familiar conditions before Devon Conway extended New Zealand’s advantage with a steely 91, steering them to 180 for three at stumps on day two of the first Test here on Thursday.

Daryl Mitchell (14) and Rachin Ravindra (22) were manning the crease at stumps as Kiwis built a lead of 134 runs.

Mark Henry (5/15) and William O’Rourke (4/22) engineered a batting collapse of Adelaidean proportions, dismantling India for 46, their lowest innings total at home in Tests.

India’s day was made even gloomier later as Rishabh Pant limped out of the field after a sharply-turned ball from Ravindra Jadeja slammed on to his left knee.

The visiting batters needed to build on the phenomenal effort of the bowlers, and Conway did the job to perfection.

He first added 67 runs for the opening wicket with skipper Tom Latham (15), who fell to Kuldeep Yadav, and then 75 with Will Young for the second as New Zealand marched ahead confidently.

Conway and Young (33), who was dropped on 32 by Rohit Sharma at first slip off Jadeja, staved off India’s charges.

Conway brought up his fifty in just 54 balls with a six off Ravichandran Ashwin over the bowler’s head.

Young was more fortuitous but gave brave company to Conway before perishing to Jadeja in his attempt to sweep the left-arm spinner.

New Zealand were 180 for three in their first innings in reply to India’s 46 all out on the second day of the rain-hit opening Test here on Thursday. India crashed to their lowest-ever total in a Test at home, folding in just 31.2 overs with five home batters not even managing to open their accounts. Rishabh Pant scored 20 while opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made 13. None of the other Indian batters got a double-digit score. New Zealand, in complete contrast, batted solidly to gain a lead of 134 runs by the end of the day’s play.

Devon Conway (91) and Will Young (33) raised a 75-run partnership after the Kiwis lost Tom Latham (15).

Rachin Ravindra (22) and Daryl Mitchell (14) were at the crease when the stumps were drawn for the day due to bad light.

Brief Scores:

India 1st innings: 46 all out in 31.2 overs (Rishabh Pant 20; Matt Henry 5/15)

New Zealand 1st innings: 180/3 in 50 overs (Devon Conway 91, Will Young 33; Ravindra Jadeja 1/28, R Ashwin 1/46, Kuldeep Yadav 1/57).

Top-order batters Devon Conway and Finn Allen on Thursday turned down New Zealand central contracts to pursue a career in franchise cricket, announced the country’s cricket board. However, Conway will be available for New Zealand’s international assignments through a casual agreement similar to the one Kane Williamson signed with NZC recently. It means that Conway will play international matches unless they do not overlap his franchise commitments. “Firstly, I’d like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their support through this process,” Conway said in a video posted by Blackcaps on ‘X’.

“Playing for the Black Caps is still the pinnacle for me and I’m hugely passionate about representing New Zealand and winning games of international cricket.” However, Conway said the decision to opt out of the central contract was taken in the best interest of his family.

“The decision to move away from a central playing contract isn’t one I’ve taken lightly, but I believe it is the best for me and my family at this present time,” he added.

Recently, Williamson decided to skip the white ball series against Sri Lanka in January to play in the SA20. Pacers Adam Milne and Lockie Ferugson also have similar understanding with the NZC.

“We’re delighted with Devon’s decision to commit to the Blackcaps – he’s a quality player who’s made a strong contribution to the team over the past few years,” said NZC chief executive Scott Weenink.

“In the current environment it’s important to have flexibility in our system to navigate some of the challenges posed by franchise cricket – and this is another example of how we’re working hard to retain our best players,” he said.

While Conway is a central figure for Chennai Super Kings, the 25-year-old Allen is not a regular in the IPL circuit.

But he has other avenues such as stints with the likes of San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket (MLC), and for both Southern Brave and Birmingham Phoenix in ‘The Hundred’ in England.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)’s New Zealand batter Devon Conway will play no part in this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) as he was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to an injury. Conway had missed the first six games of CSK so far amid uncertainity over his participation in the tournament due to the injury. However, the opening batter has now been ruled out of the entire season. CSK have named veteran England pacer Richard Gleeson as his replacement.

“Devon Conway has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to an injury,” IPL said in a statement on Thursday.

Conway has been part of CSK for the past two seasons, and helped them win the title last year. He played 23 matches and scored 924 runs, which included 9 half-centuries and a highest score of 92 not out.

The 36-year-old Gleeson, on the other hand, is yet to get a taste of IPL cricket. In 2022, he made his England debut at the 35 in a T20I against India and dismissed Rohit SharmaVirat Kohli and Rishabh Pant to end the match with figures of 3/15.

He has played 6 T20Is in total for England.

“CSK have added Richard Gleeson to the squad for the remainder of the IPL 2024. Gleeson has represented England in 6 T20Is and has 9 wickets against his name. Additionally, Gleeson has played 90 T20s and picked 101 T20 wickets. He will join CSK for his reserve price of  Rs 50 Lac,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, CSK are currently third in the points table with four wins from a possible six.
