Tom Latham and Devon Conway earned a unique place in test history on Sunday (December 21, 2025) when their 192-run second innings partnership paved the way for New Zealand’s declaration at 306-2 on the fourth day of the third cricket test against the West Indies.

Latham made the declaration at drinks in the third session with New Zealand leading by 461 runs. New Zealand earlier had bowled out the West Indies for 420 in reply to its of 575-8, a first innings lead of 155.

At stumps after 16 overs the West Indies were 43-0 with Brandon King 37 and John Campbell 2. They will start the last day needing 419 to win on a pitch on which cracks and plates are creating inconsistent bounce.

Latham and Conway shared a 323-run opening stand in New Zealand’s first innings of 587-8 and became the first pair in tests to achieve a triple century and century partnership in the same match.

Conway followed his first innings of 227 with exactly 100 to become only the 10th player and first New Zealander to score a double century and century in the same test.

Latham made 137 in the first innings and 101 in the second, emulating his father Rod who joined with Mark Greatbatch to make century opening partnerships in both innings of a test against Zimbabwe in 1992.

Meanwhile Kane Williamson, batting first drop, had to wait padded up for more than 86 overs in the first innings and almost 40 overs in the second for his turn to bat.

He took advantage of his opportunity Sunday to reach 40 not out. Rachin Ravindra made an unbeaten 46 from 23 balls, rushing as the declaration approached.

In the series Conway made 0, 37, 60, 28, 227 and 100: 452 runs at 75.3. Latham made 24, 145, 11, 9, 137 and 101: 427 runs at 71.1. Conway and Latham’s partnerships in this test produced 515 runs, more than any opening pair in a single match in all tests.

“I think all the work the guys have been doing for a while now is paying off the way they want,” New Zealand batting coach Luke Ronchi said. “I think the mindset is where they want it to be and the trust in their own game and the game plans against particular bowlers is coming off.

“But it also a nice batting wicket as well, not the traditional sort of New Zealand wicket you see in most test matches.

Earlier on Sunday (December 21, 2025), Jacob Duffy took two quick wickets to help New Zealand bowl out the West Indies in the first hour of the fourth day.

The West Indies resumed at 381-6 but lost four wickets for 39 runs. Kavem Hodge remained 123 not out, his second test century and highest score.

Duffy took 4-86 in the first innings to go with his 5-34 and 3-122 in the first test and 5-38 and 4-86 in the second test: 18 wickets in total at an average of 17.3.

Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra’s early attack helped New Zealand beat West Indies by five wickets with three balls to spare in a rain-curtailed second one-day international in Napier to seal the three-game series 2-0 on Wednesday.

Chasing 248 for victory in a 34-overs-a-side contest, Conway and Ravindra powered the Black Caps with attacking half-centuries, putting on a 106-run opening stand that dismantled the Caribbean bowling attack early on.

After being put into bat, West Indies top order faltered, losing half their batters for only 86 in 15.3 overs, as Kyle Jamieson (3-44) dismissed John Campbell and Keacy Carty early on.

Wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope anchored the innings with a counterattacking century – his 19th in ODIs – featuring 13 fours and four sixes.

Late contributions from Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd alongside Hope helped the visitors reach 247-9.

New Zealand started well but after Ravindra (56) fell in the 17th over, the hosts lost Will Young and Mark Chapman in quick succession. Conway (90) also departed in the 26th over, leaving them on shaky ground at 166-4.

But unbeaten innings by Tom Latham (39 off 29) and captain Mitchell Santner (34 off 15) kept the pressure off New Zealand even as the required run rate went above 10 at times.

The hosts needed seven to win off the last five balls when Jayden Seales (1-51) bowled a no-ball that Latham hit for four, before Santner scored the winning run with a cover drive.

“The way we’ve been pushing the game to the back end, pretty much finishing in the last over, it’s only a matter of time before we cross the line,” said player-of-the-match Hope.

“We have to find a way to cross the line. To be a great team, you have to keep winning against the best.”

New Zealand will play the third ODI against West Indies on Saturday, with a three-test series to follow from December 2.

Devon Conway has been ruled out but Rachin Ravindra has been cleared to play for New Zealand in the first cricket test against Australia starting at the Basin Reserve on Thursday.

Conway suffered a thumb injury while keeping wicket in the second Twenty20 international between the teams on Friday last week. While initial scans suggested there was no fracture, additional tests in Wellington in recent days have found there is damage to Conway’s left thumb.

Conway will have further tests later in the week. Meantime, Will Young open the batting with Tom Latham in Conway’s place.

Henry Nicholls, who was dropped from the New Zealand team ahead of its two recent tests against South Africa — both victories — has been recalled to provide reinforcement for the batting lineup.

“It’s disappointing for Devon to be ruled out on the eve of an important match,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

“He’s a class player batting at the top of the order for us and I know he was looking forward to this series.” Ravindra missed the second and third Twenty20s against Australia with a slight knee injury but is fit to play from Thursday. He scored a maiden double-century in the first innings of the first test against South Africa. Daryl Mitchell is also available after missing the South Africa series with a foot injury.

Captain Tim Southee said New Zealand will settle on its match lineup after assessing conditions at the Basin Reserve where the pitch usually is green at first but good for batting. New Zealand will decide whether to go into the match with four seamers or to include spin-bowling allrounder Mitchell Santner.

New Zealand left Santner out of its lineup for the second test against South Africa at Hamilton, using four seamers.

“I think in hindsight, we probably got that wrong the way that the pitch did behave,” Stead said. “We’ve certainly got Mitch Santner here as that option and we’ll certainly consider him as well.” Australia captain Pat Cummins has named an unchanged starting XI for the test.

Cummins confirmed Wednesday there would be “no surprises” in the starting XI, with Australia picking the same team that lost to the West Indies in the second test in Brisbane last month.

“It’s always nice to have a full contingent to pick from,” Cummins said. “I don’t feel like we need to reinvent the wheel.” The two-test series against Australia will be one of the few occasions New Zealand has faced a full-strength Australia lineup. New Zealand and Australia only rarely meet in test series and Australia at times has not fielded its best team.

New Zealand currently is first and Australia third in World Test Championship standings.
