Delhi sees showers; minimum temp drops to 24.8°C

Morning showers in Delhi brought the minimum temperature down to 24.8°C on Saturday (September 5, 2026), a dip of 3.4°C from the day before.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow-to-orange alert for the day, predicting light-moderate rain.

According to data from IMD, Safdarjung recorded 0.7 mm of rain between 11.30 p.m. on Friday (September 4) and 5.30 a.m. on Saturday (September 5). The weather station also recorded 1.3 mm of rain in the subsequent three hours till 8.30 a.m.

Meanwhile, Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 22°C, 3.5° lower than the day before; Lodhi Road recorded a minimum of 24.7°C; Ayanagar recorded a minimum of 24°C, a 3° decrease from the day before.

There was little rain recorded overnight across several weather stations of the national capital.

“Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of speed 30-40 kmph, is likely across Delhi,” said an IMD official.

According to the forecast, the maximum temperature is likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius.

The air quality index (AQI) of the city remained in the satisfactory category on Saturday (September 5) morning and was recorded at 59 (satisfactory) at 9 a.m., as compared to the 24-hour average AQI of 71 (satisfactory) recorded at 4 p.m. on Friday (September 4), according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

As per CPCB standards, an AQI of 0-50 is considered ‘good’, 51-100 ‘satisfactory’, 101-200 ‘moderate’, 201-300 ‘poor’, 301-400 ‘very poor’, and 401-500 ‘severe’.

Strong winds, thunderstorms and rain in parts of Delhi brought some respite to its residents after days of searing heat. The city was placed under an orange alert for dust storm and thunderstorm and there was a sharp drop in visibility in a few areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said temporary relief from heatwave conditions is expected over northwest India, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, due to thunderstorm activity over the region, but temperatures are likely to rise again from Sunday (May 23, 2026) onwards.

According to the IMD, wind speeds during the dust storm and thunderstorm activity were recorded at up to 81 kmph at Pusa Road, 56 kmph at Palam and 35 kmph at Pragati Maidan.

A significant reduction in visibility was also recorded at Palam airport, where visibility dropped from 3,500 metres to 1,500 metres within one hour.

The weather office said squally winds were prevailing over Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) and advised residents to remain indoors until weather conditions improve and the winds dissipate. Light to moderate rainfall was also recorded in various parts of the city.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain, moderate thunderstorms with lightning and very light rainfall at isolated places, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 80 kmph.

The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 44 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to hover near 28°C.

“The wind direction has changed. Till yesterday (May 22), winds were coming from over the Thar desert, which made the air extremely dry. Today (May 23), the wind direction has changed because of which the dryness in the air will reduce,” Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather, said.

Delhi had reeled under heatwave-like conditions over the past several days, with temperatures crossing the 45°C mark in many parts of the city and warm night conditions persisting.

At 28.6 Degrees Celsius, Delhi Records Second-Hottest Day Of Season

Delhi witnessed the second-hottest day of the season on Saturday as the maximum temperature was recorded at 28.6 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The hottest day of the season was recorded on February 11, when the maximum temperature was 29.7 degrees Celsius.

The weather department has forecast mist for Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius and 11 degrees Celsius respectively.

The humidity levels fluctuated between 84 per cent and 45 per cent.

The air quality was recorded in the “moderate” category, with an AQI reading of 183 at 7 pm, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

An Air Quality Index (AQI) between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.

Delhi Records Winter Season’s Coldest Night So Far At 8.5 Degrees Celsius

Delhi experienced its coldest night of the season so far on Thursday as the temperature dipped to 8.5 degrees Celsius. Weather department officials have forecast a further drop, predicting that the mercury may fall to 7 degrees Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this marked a sharp decline from Wednesday night, when the minimum temperature was recorded at 12.5 degrees Celsius, reflecting a significant drop of four notches within 24 hours.

The second-coldest night of this winter season was observed on November 26, when the temperature dipped to 9.5 degrees Celsius.

During the same period last year, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius on November 29 while in 2022, the lowest minimum temperature was 7.6 degrees Celsius.

While nighttime temperatures plummeted, the daytime temperature was also the second-lowest of the season on Thursday at 25.1 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of the year.

According to the IMD’s data, the lowest daytime temperature this season was 23.5 degrees Celsius, recorded on November 18, followed by Thursday’s reading.

Humidity levels fluctuated between 64 per cent and 46 per cent during the day.

The IMD has forecast shallow fog conditions for Friday, with the maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 26 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius respectively.

Delhi Records Maximum Temperature Of 35.2 Degrees, Light Rain Likely Tomorrow

The national capital experienced intervals of clouds and sunshine on Monday with a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius, one notch above the normal, according to the weather department.

The Met sounded a ‘yellow’ alert for Tuesday, predicting generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain in the city, along with thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds and strong surface winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.

On Monday, the 24-hour Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded in the “satisfactory” category with a reading of 70 at 4 pm, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.8 degrees Celsius and humidity oscillated between 83 per cent and 76 per cent, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). The maximum and minimum temperatures on Tuesday are likely to hover around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively, the Met said.

According to the IMD’s colour codes for weather warnings, ‘green’ alert means no advisory is required, ‘yellow’ asks people to stay aware as the conditions could worsen.

‘Orange’ denotes a warning to prepare for likely power outages and potential disruptions to transport, rail, road, and air, and a ‘red’ alert warns of extremely bad weather conditions that could disrupt transportation and power supply, posing a risk to life.
