New Delhi:

The plummeting temperature in Delhi has raised power demand to newer heights with December clocking a peak of 5,213 MW, the highest ever for the month, discom officials on Monday said.

For the first time in Delhi’s history, the peak power demand in December has crossed the 5,000 MW-mark.

As per the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), power demand stood at 5,213 MW at 10:50 am on Tuesday, after touching 5,046 MW on Monday.

Delhi’s peak power demand in December was 4,884 MW in 2023, and 4,964 MW in 2022, discom officials said.

The winter months in Delhi are expected to follow the record-breaking summer trend in peak power demand, which touched an unprecedented peak of 8,656 MW this year.

As per officials, the peak power demand in the capital this winter is expected to cross 6,300 MW.

A BSES spokesperson said that green energy will meet up to 53 per cent of the over 3,900 MW peak power demand in areas under BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL).

Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools are also being used for accurate forecasting to tackle the growing winter power demand, he said.

BRPL and BYPL successfully met this season’s peak winter power demand of 2,194 MW and 1,038 MW in their respective areas so far, the spokesperson said.

Last winter, the peak hit 5,816 MW on January 22, marking the highest level recorded in the national capital in winter months.

The peak power demand in areas within BRPL and BYPL are projected to exceed 2,600 MW and 1,240 MW, respectively, officials said.

New Delhi:

The peak power demand of the national capital in the upcoming winter season is expected to the break previous record of 6,300 MW, discom officials said on Thursday.

The BSES discoms — BRPL and BYPL — are adopting strategic power planning to meet rising peak demand. Up to 53 per cent of the maximum winter power demand, over 3,900 MW, in BSES area will be met by green power, said a spokesperson of the company.

The discoms are expecting the demand in winter months to follow the record-breaking summer trend. During summer this year, Delhi recorded an unprecedented peak power demand of 8,656 MW.

Forecasts from State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) Delhi, indicate that the city’s peak power demand this winter could surpass 6,300 MW, setting a new seasonal high.

Last winter, the peak hit 5,816 MW, marking the highest level recorded in the national capital. Within the BRPL and BYPL areas, winter peaks hit 2,529 MW and 1,210 MW, respectively, previously, while this year, the figure is projected to exceed 2,600 MW for BRPL and 1,240 MW for BYPL, said the company spokesperson.

To deliver reliable power year-round, the BSES discoms are focusing on strategic planning, precise demand forecasting, and maintaining a robust distribution network. These measures are set to ensure consistent power availability for more than 50 lakh consumers covering two crore residents in the south, west, east and central Delhi during the coming winter months, he added.

A spokesperson of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) said the discom is expecting the peak demand to breach 1,840-MW mark in its distribution area of north and north west Delhi.

“We are fully prepared to ensure warm and safe winters for our consumers. We have made sufficient arrangements, including long-term power tie-ups, to meet the demand and have ensured reliability of our equipment at these low temperatures and foggy conditions,” she said.

Additionally, the discom has already strengthened its power network by conducting preventive and condition-based maintenance of the critical electrical installations, she added.

New Delhi:

As searing temperatures reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius continue to boil Delhi, the capital’s electricity usage has reached an incredible peak of 8,647 MW today, its highest-ever peak power demand.

According to officials, peak power demand in Delhi reached 8,647 MW at 3:22 pm today.

On May 22, 2024, Delhi’s peak electricity consumption reached 8000 MW for the first time. Since then, there have been eight instances when Delhi’s peak electricity consumption exceeded 8000 MW.

Due to the scorching temperatures outside, Delhi residents are forced to use air conditioners and other cooling devices more frequently than usual, leading to subsequent electricity spikes.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave conditions in “isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand on 19th June.”

The national capital is currently under a ‘red’ alert, with the maximum temperature expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius today.
