The attackers shot at Jain at least seven to eight times.

New Delhi:

A 57-year-old businessman was allegedly shot dead in the Farsh Bazar area of Delhi’s Shahdara district on Saturday. The victim, Sunil Jain, was shot dead by two bike-borne men while he was returning home on a scooter along with a friend after a morning walk at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

His friend has now claimed that it could be a case of mistaken identity.

Mr Jain’s friend, Sumit – with whom he used to walk in the morning, told NDTV that the shooters initially told the victim that his phone had fallen off.

They then asked, “Whose name is Virat”. To this, Sumit responded, “No one”.

But one of the attackers shouted “Yahi hai” (This is the one), pointing his finger at Mr Jain.

The attackers then allegedly fired eight shots at Mr Jain.

The police are on the lookout for ‘Virat’ and are also investigating the angle of mistaken identity.

According to a preliminary investigation, a minor was arrested last month for killing two people, Akash Sharma and Rishabh, in the national capital. The minor’s father’s name was found to be Virat, officials said.

However, it has yet to be ascertained whether he is the same Virat that the shooters were looking for.

“We are probing the case from all angles,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said, adding that CCTV footage from the area is being scanned.

The police have also revealed that Jain’s shooters used 9mm and 7.61 mm pistols to kill the businessman.

The victim was a resident of Krishna Nagar and owned a utensils business.

According to his family, Jain did not have any rivalry with anyone, the police said.

The accused are currently on the run.

After AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal questioned the silence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital, the BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa launched a scathing attack against the former chief minister, alleging that Kejriwal himself had “ruined Delhi” and turned Tihar Jail into an “extortion centre.”

Sirsa stated, “Arvind Kejriwal has completely destroyed Delhi. What enmity do you have with the people of Delhi, who gave you such a massive mandate? Today, criminals are operating freely from Tihar Jail under your watch, orchestrating murders and extortion. Tihar Jail has become a hub of criminal activities, and it seems you have a strange attachment to the place, indulging in financial dealings even from there.”

He further claimed that as per conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, Rs 16 crore were taken from him. “If you can’t handle Delhi’s situation, then step aside, we will take care of it. Stop ruining Delhi and endangering its citizens,” he added.

Sirsa also criticised Kejriwal’s failure to fulfil promises made to the people of Delhi, alleging, “He promised to build schools and universities, but not a single one has materialised. He vowed to improve water quality and clean the Yamuna, but nothing has been done. The only promise he has kept is filling his own pockets.”

Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal questioned the ‘silence’ of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over a spurt in incidents of crimes in the national Capital, stating that the onus for the security of Delhiites lies with him.

Kejriwal’s direct charge at the Centre came after twin murders rocked the national Capital on Saturday.

In an interaction with IANS, the former Chief Minister said that the issue of the city’s law and order rests with the Home Minister and his silence is raising many questions.

“Just the way I am responsible for Delhi’s education and health, he is accountable for law and order. Why is Amit Shah silent, why is he not giving any answer when so many crime incidents are happening in the city daily?” he said.

New Delhi:

A 22-year-old man died while his brother suffered injuries after they were allegedly stabbed by three bike-borne men in the Harsh Vihar area of northeast Delhi, police said on Monday. The police said they have arrested one accused, identified as Vikas (22), and recovered the motorcycle used in the crime.

The victim has been identified as Ankur, a resident of Pratap Nagar, who was returning from a Dussehra fair with his brother Himanshu on Saturday when the incident took place, they added.

According to an initial probe, on Saboli road, Ankur and Himanshu reportedly advised a biker carrying two pillion passengers to drive safely, a senior police officer said.

On hearing this, the three men alighted and started thrashing Ankur and Himanshu. One of the accused then whipped out a knife and stabbed both the brothers, the officer said.

Himanshu, who suffered knife wounds on his neck and thigh, managed to rush Ankur to a nearby hospital in an e-rickshaw where doctors declared him dead.

“The deceased sustained multiple stab wounds on his chest, stomach, and thigh. We arrested one of the accused and the remaining two are still absconding,” the officer said, adding that Ankur’s body has been handed over to his family members after postmortem.

A purported CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral on social media showing the three men attacking the two brothers in full public view. The footage also shows a man trying to catch hold of one of the attackers even as they fled.

“We demand strict action against the accused,” Ankur’s father Krishan Pal said.

The police said that a team of the crime branch was tasked to trace Neeraj Solanki

New Delhi:

A Delhi man has been arrested for allegedly killing his two new-born daughters and burying them, the police said on Wednesday. Neeraj Solanki allegedly wanted a son and was upset about the birth of twin daughters. He had been on the run since the alleged murder on June 3. He was arrested from Haryana.

Pooja Solanki, who lives in Delhi’s Sultanpuri with her husband Neeraj Solanki, gave birth to twin girls at a hospital in Haryana’s Rohtak on May 30.

“The accused was evading arrest in Delhi and Haryana by changing his locations regularly,” the police said in an official statement. Neeraj Solanki, 32, has been charged with murder after his wife complained to the police.

How Police Probe Began

The police said they began investigating after receiving a call at the Sultanpuri police station on June 3 about the “murder” of the two babies.

The caller said his brother-in-law had killed his 3-day-old twin girls and buried them at a crematorium, the police said.

“After that, police staff was deployed at the cremation ground where the children were buried and permission was taken from the concerned SDM (Sub Divisional Magistrate) to exhume the corpses. On June 5, the corpses were exhumed and preserved at a mortuary in Mangolpuri. On June 6, we conducted a post-mortem. The bodies were handed over to their maternal uncle,” they said.

How Neeraj Solanki Was Caught

A team of the crime branch was tasked with tracing Neeraj Solanki, a Delhi University graduate who survived on rent from his properties.

The police launched surveillance and also drew inputs from local sources.

The police analysed call data and noticed that Neeraj Solanki was changing his mobile handset, SIMs and hideouts frequently to dodge the police.

After raids at various places in Delhi and Haryana, Neeraj Solanki was eventually arrested from Sampla in Rohtak.

During interrogation, he confessed to the murders, the police said.

New Delhi:

A 13-year-old girl and his younger brother were found dead inside their father’s grocery shop in northwest Delhi’s Keshav Puram area on Saturday, police said.

The children’s father Manish, who is suspected to have killed the two siblings, is on the run and efforts are on to nab him, they said.  A call regarding the incident was received at 7.15 pm, police said.

Manish’s wife told police that both the children had gone to school but they did not return home. Initially, she thought that they were with their father as he would often pick them up from their school, they said.

“She tried to contact Manish but his mobile phone was not reachable. In the evening, when other family members opened the shutter of their shop, they found the two siblings lying inside in an unconscious condition,” an officer said.

They were taken to hospital where doctors declared them dead, he said, adding that their school bags were also lying inside the shop, located on the ground floor of their house.

According to a police officer, it is suspected that Manish killed his children by giving them some poisonous substance or by smothering them.

“The matter is being investigated from all possible angles and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” the officer said, adding the actual cause of death will be ascertained only after the report comes.

During the investigation, it was found that Manish was upset due to some financial issue, however, further probe is underway. The statements of the family members have been taken, police said.

The CCTVs in the locality are being scanned and teams were formed to locate Manish, police said.

The police said the motive for the crime is unknown (Representational)

New Delhi:

A 32-year-old Delhi woman missing since February 23 was allegedly strangled by her business partner, who is also suspected to have died by suicide in Haryana’s Sonipat, the city police said on Wednesday.

The woman’s body was found on Wednesday at a Narela playschool that she was planning to open with her business partner Sohan Lal, they said.

According to a complaint lodged by Swatantra Nagar resident Vijay Kumar at Narela police station on February 24, his daughter left home on February 23 on a two-wheeler and did not return.

The woman was divorced and lived with her father.

Kumar informed that she was last seen with her business partner Sohan Lal, with whom she was planning to start the Tiny Dream Berry Playschool in Narela. The playschool is not operational yet and consists of a basement and a room on the ground floor acting as the office with another shop to the right, a senior police officer said.

The officer said Kumar called on his daughter’s mobile phone on February 24 but it was received by an unidentified person. The person informed Kumar that he was near the railway tracks in Sonipat’s Harshana village where a man was trying to commit suicide. On a video call, Kumar identified the man trying to kill himself as Sohan Lal.

“He (Kumar) immediately reached Harshana village and collected the (victim’s) mobile phone from the unidentified person. By that time, Sohan Lal had left the place,” the officer said.

Subsequently, Kumar lodged a missing person’s complaint at Narela police station on February 24.

“During the inquiry, the playschool premises were checked in presence of the father. However, the main office was shuttered and locked,” said the officer.

The mobile numbers of the woman and Sohan Lal were sent for call detail record analysis and location information gathered. Sohan Lal’s last location was revealed to be Haryana’s Barauta.

The victim’s father subsequently got the playschool’s office shutter opened with the landlord’s help and noticed his daughter’s body behind the main desk. He called the local police, who took custody of the body, the officer said.

Her dupatta was wrapped around her neck and it appears that she was strangulated to death, he added.

The police checked for Sohan Lal’s whereabouts and, after contacting the Sonipat GRP, found that one person was found dead on the railway tracks on February 25. The body is being preserved in a mortuary.

“The body is strongly suspected to be that of Sohan Lal. It is now suspected that Sohan Lal strangled her (the woman) and committed suicide,” the officer said.

The motive for the crime is unknown. A murder case is being registered, he added.

Her body was found near a government school in Delhi (Representational)

New Delhi:

A man has been arrested in connection with the killing of a Swiss woman, whose body was found in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar area on Friday, the police said. The body of the woman, identified as Lena Berger, was found near a government school on Friday morning – half covered with a black garbage disposal plastic bag.

The police have arrested a person named Gurpreet Singh in the case.

According to police sources, the accused met the woman in Switzerland after which both of them became friends.

Gurpreet, who often used to go to Switzerland to visit Berger, suspected that she was having a relationship with another man, police sources said.

Gurpreet then made a plan to murder Berger and asked her to visit India, according to Delhi Police sources.

Upon Gurpreet’s request, Berger landed in India on October 11.

Five days later, Gurpreet took the victim to a room, tied her hands and legs, and killed her. Initially, he kept Berger’s body in a car which he bought with the ID of a woman. However, when a foul smell started coming from the car, he threw her body on the road and fled from the spot.

Delhi Police reportedly traced Gurpreet after getting the vehicle’s registration number with the help of the CCTV footage. They seized the car in which the body was kept and another four-wheeler that belonged to Gurpreet.

They also recovered Rs 2.25 crore from Gurpreet’s house.
