New Delhi:

A video of passengers jumping over automated fare collection (AFC) gates at a metro station in Delhi has gone viral, with netizens saying they have “never seen something like this ever”, even as authorities claimed it was a “momentary reaction” of some due to a temporary surge in commuters for a brief period.

The incident took place at the Jama Masjid Metro Station on the Violet Line on February 13.

A 52-second clip shows passengers jumping over AFC gates amid cheers, with many filming the act on their cellphones.

“Such people lack civic sense. I’ve never seen something like this ever in Delhi metro” a user who goes by the name Dassy said.

Another user, Wordpecker, said: “The Delhi Metro incident in which commuters jumped over the AFC gates at the Jama Masjid station… is a shocking matter. It raises grave concerns over security in the Metro. How dare the passengers break the law in the presence of the authorities. It reflects very poorly on the alertness and responsibility of the authorities.”

“It’s been over 20 years for Delhi Metro now, but still on unmanned platforms, you will see people coming out of Metro banging their heads with those entering in and exchanging some cute words. Insane consistency,” another user said.

Amid criticisms of alleged mismanagement, the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation said “there was a temporary surge of passengers for a brief time when some passengers bypassed the AFC gate by jumping over it to exit”.

“Security personnel and other staff were adequately present to counsel such passengers and the situation was never out of control. Rather, it was a momentary reaction of some passengers due to sudden surge at AFC gates,” Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director at Corporate Communications, DMRC, said in a statement.

In the first incident, services were hit for over half an hour.

New Delhi:

Services were affected on sections of the Delhi Metro for over half an hour on Wednesday afternoon and then again in the evening after two drones were spotted on the tracks.

In a statement on the afternoon incident, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said services were affected on the Blue Line after a drone was found lying between the Uttam Nagar East and Uttam Nagar West Metro Stations. It said services on the line were “regulated” between 02:50 PM and 03:29 PM.

Services were not run between the two stations to ensure personnel could access the tracks and remove the drone. Metro rakes were run only on a single line between Uttam Nagar East and Janakpuri West, and between Uttam Nagar West and Dwarka.

The DMRC said services remained available in two sections of the Blue Line from Janakpuri West to Vaishali and NOIDA Electronic City; and Dwarka to Dwarka Sector-21.

Normal services resumed on the entire line, between Dwarka Sector-21 and NOIDA Electronic City/Vaishali after 3:29 PM when the drone was removed and a security clearance was given.

In the evening incident, a drone was found on the tracks near the Janakpuri Metro station, which is an interchange point between the Blue and Magenta lines. Officials said services were stopped for some time while the drone was being retrieved.

They said the drone turned out to be “toy-like” and its owner is being questioned, adding that they have not found anything suspicious so far.

The woman was travelling on the Yellow Line towards Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station.

The Delhi Metro has become a lifeline of the city in 20 years and is regarded as one of the most convenient means of transportation. However, these days, the Delhi Metro has been in the news for different reasons which have mostly to do with unruly and unusual passenger behaviour. Amid this, a 22-year-old post-graduate student recently shared her harrowing experience while travelling in Delhi Metro in a Reddit post.

She said that an elderly man inappropriately touched her while she was travelling in the metro and the incident has left her “disgusted and scared”. The woman was travelling on the Yellow Line towards Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station. She stated that she saw an elderly man and offered him a seat since she was about to get down. “He looked kinda old and I was literally giving him my seat to sit on as my station was arriving,” she wrote on Reddit.

When she got up from the seat, she felt something was wrong. She continued, “He sort of lingers for a while looking at that empty seat and I instinctively felt something seemed odd for a moment and then when I began moving towards the metro gate he GRAZED his hand over my a**.”

Eww why Delhi metro ?
by indelhi

The 22-year-old said that she “froze” and saw the man “fleeing” towards the next coach of the metro. She added that she got scared to get off at any station and stayed on the train for a few minutes till everyone got off. “I just felt so disgusted. I was so scared to get off at my station and stayed back in the metro for a good 5 mins till everyone had boarded off. And I could feel that revolting sensation still. It just felt so dirty. My day is thoroughly ruined and now I will be anxious for quite sometime travelling in metro,” she continued.

She concluded the post and said the incident scared her about her safety and well-being for the first time in the metro.

The now-viral post caught the attention of several users, who expressed their frustration and anger.

“And these men say that why women have ‘privilege’ of seperate women coach. This is not privilege bro , its necessity,” said a user.

Another said, “So many cases on the metro, can we do something as citizens? It’s getting worse guys.”

“Practically you can never avoid such conditions 100% . Be sure to confront the person if something like that happens again,” said a third user.

“Post on twitter, loop delhi police and Women and child ministry, also may loop Ms Maliwal,” added a person.

A user said, “This is unacceptable, me being a male wants to apologise for such behaviour. I hope you are okay.”

“Please dont travel in coaches except women’s coach. These experiences are traumatic enough,” stated a Reddit user.

Delhi Police personnel with weapons will be seen travelling in metro trains during emergency situations

New Delhi:

In a first, the Delhi Police personnel with weapons will be seen travelling in metro trains during emergency situations to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams and reach the spot sooner, officials said today.

According to officials, the Delhi Police has got the go-ahead on its proposal in a recent meeting with the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Coorporation) and CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), which is deployed at the stations for security checks.

As of now, the Delhi Police personnel are not allowed to travel in metro with weapons.

According to a Delhi Police officer, the final modalities for the SOP (standard operating procedure) have been chalked out, and if possible, it may be implemented before the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi.

“We have got the approval for travelling in the metro with weapons during crisis or law and order situations from the DMRC. On April 16, a meeting was held with all the stake holders, including the DMRC and CISF, regarding the matter,” the officer said.

The officer further said a group of personnel can travel without the token, but before the journey, their in-charge or head, will have to inform the DMRC about the reason and details of the personnel.

A coach might be dedicated to the personnel depending on the situation, he said.

“The journey will be on payment basis and each travelling personnel will be wearing the uniform,” the officer added.

Citing an example of riot-like situation where extra force is required, their movement in large numbers in buses becomes difficult due to heavy traffic in Delhi, the officer said. Sometime it even takes more than an hour to reach from one district to another, he said.

The metro line has spread almost every parts of Delhi and it can be utilised in saving the time to reach the spot at the time of crisis, he added.

Another police officer said, as per the plan, transportation will be provided to the force for ‘pick and drop’ from metro stations to reach the spot.

This also includes the movement of paramilitary personnel, if they are to be deployed in the national capital during emergencies.

Delhi has witnessed communal riots in Trilokpuri and North-East Delhi, in 2014 and 2020, respectively.

The video claims that the incident occurred near the Anand Vihar metro station.

After a string of videos of couples getting intimate in coaches of Delhi Metro surfaced online, another similar clip has surfaced on social media, angering a section of internet users. In the undated clip, a couple can be seen hugging and kissing near the automated doors of a moving metro train.

The video claims that the incident occurred near the Anand Vihar metro station. It is to be noted that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has repeatedly urged passengers to not indulge in such activities and act appropriately inside the train. NDTV cannot verify the authenticity of this video.

The video was captioned as, ”Another emotional video of Anand Vihar #delhimetro (OYO).
Maybe we have forgotten that love is blind, people are not.”

Watch the video here:

The video has enraged many social media users who urged the DMRC to take action on the matter. Others questioned the idea of filming the act and circulating the couple’s video without their consent.

One user wrote, ”Shows the couple’s immaturity – could have avoided unwanted attention. And discussing it for a long time is also unnecessary.” Another commented, ”This is become regular in Delhi? why? looking very very awkward.”

A third said, ”Seriously what’s wrong if they are kissing each other and not disturbing anyone else, looks like people like you have no other work than interfering in other people’s lives.”

In May this year, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said that it had decided to strengthen patrolling at stations and inside trains by uniformed security personnel and staffers in plain clothes after a string of such videos caused controversy.

The Delhi Metro also requested commuters to report such incidents to the “nearest available metro staff/CISF immediately so that appropriate action can be taken”.

A few months back, a video of a young couple kissing each other while sitting on the floor of a metro coach went viral on social media. The DMRC in a statement said that it “expects its commuters to behave responsibly while using the Delhi Metro and follow all social etiquette and protocols which are acceptable in the society”.

“Commuters should not indulge in any indecent/obscene activity that may cause discomfort or could offend the sensibilities of other fellow commuters. DMRC’s Operations & Maintenance Act in fact lists out indecency as a punishable offence under Section 59,” it said.
