New Delhi:

Ahead of Delhi Assembly polls, several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and members joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of state president Virendraa Sachdeva on Sunday.

Kapil Naagar, who had contested elections twice from Kamla Nagar ward of Model Town Legislative Assembly, joined the BJP. Along with him, more than 100 workers of Aam Aadmi Party also joined the BJP.

Meanwhile, several AAP workers joined the BJP in the presence of BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, who is a BJP candidate from the Kalkaji assembly for the Delhi assembly polls.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr Bidhuri said, “I would like to thank all of you for being a part of PM Modi ji’s family. There is nothing more fortunate than this for us. Modi ji says only one thing. Everyone’s support, everyone’s development, everyone’s faith, everyone’s effort. You will all have to make an effort. In 2047, India will be recognized as a developed nation.”

Mr Bidhuri also lashed out against Chief Minister Atishi, saying that she is canvassing for votes after allegedly neglecting them for four and half years.

Mr Bidhuri told ANI, “People are facing a very difficult situation. Streets and roads are in shambles. The sewerage system is malfunctioning. You can’t enter the house without mud stuck to your shoes. Drinking water is contaminated.”

Mr Bidhuri is contesting against CM Atishi from the Kalkaji Assembly constituency.

Delhi will go to the polls on February 5 and the counting of votes will take place on February 8

.A three-way contest is on the cards in Delhi between the ruling AAP, BJP, and Congress. Congress, which was in power for 15 consecutive years in Delhi, has suffered setbacks in the last two assembly elections and has failed to win any seat.

AAP dominated the 2020 assembly elections by winning 62 out of 70 seats while the BJP got eight seats.

Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain filed his nomination papers from the Mustafabad constituency on Thursday (January 16, 2025) and returned to Tihar Jail, officials said.

The former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor is the candidate of Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) from Mustafabad for the February 5 assembly polls.

Mr. Hussain filed his nomination and returned to custody at 2:16 PM after leaving Tihar Jail earlier in the day to complete the process, a source said.

“He was released from jail under heavy security provided by Delhi Police. He left the jail around 9:15 a.m.,” the source added.

The party may announce its other candidates later in the day.

AIMIM’s Delhi president Shoaib Jamai said, “We will not contest all seats but, wherever we do, we will leave no stone unturned. Our candidates will be strong, like Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad and Shafa-ur-Rehman from Okhla. Both are currently jailed in cases related to the CAA-NRC protests.”

The Delhi High Court had on Tuesday (January 14, 2025) granted custody parole to Mr. Hussain in a riots-related murder case to enable him to file his nomination papers.

Violence broke out in northeast Delhi on February 24, 2020, leaving 53 dead and several injured.

Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena visited Rangpuri Pahari and Kapashera areas

New Delhi:

Amid the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) campaign for Assembly polls, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena visited some areas in Delhi today and pointed to the “hellish living conditions” there. Sharing visuals of open drains and residents complaining of huge power bills, Mr Saxena urged AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Atishi to visit these areas and take steps to fix the issues there.

“The stinking water accumulated in the alleys and streets is not rainwater, but from overflowing sewers. The women narrating their problems are from Delhi, not any other state,” the Lieutenant Governor said in a post on X after visiting Rangpuri Pahari in south Delhi and Kapashera in southwest Delhi. South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and several officials accompanied Mr Saxena.

“Residents of the area complained of inadequate power supply, irregular water supply and poor garbage disposal. Many residents complained of 8-10 hour power cuts daily and showed high electricity bills despite the Delhi government’s claims of providing free power,” the Lieutenant Governor wrote.

“I have assured of a cleanliness drive starting tomorrow. And I will personally monitor these efforts so that it can be ensured that the residents at least get basic services,” he said. “I urge the former Chief Minister, Chief Minister and ministers concerned of the Delhi government to visit these areas and see the hellish conditions. They must take immediate steps to improve this pitiable state of affairs. Let’s come together and make Delhi great again.”

The criticism by the Lieutenant Governor, a central government appointee, comes when the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has launched a campaign to showcase its achievements during its 10-year rule in the national capital. The AAP has pointed to revamp of government schools and neighbourhood clinics in its tenure, while the opposition BJP has flagged water and sanitation issues to corner the ruling party. Mr Saxena’s remarks also come against the backdrop of frosty ties between his office and that of the Chief Minister. Mr Saxena has criticised the AAP government over a host of issues, while the latter has alleged that the Centre appointee blocks its governance steps.
