New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched BJP leader Ravinder Singh Negi’s feet three times after the latter made a similar gesture during a public rally in Delhi this week.

The heartfelt moment came at a poll rally in North-East Delhi on Wednesday, days ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the national capital.

A video that has gone viral shows Mr Negi, the BJP’s Patparganj candidate, approaching PM Modi and attempting to touch his feet. PM Modi, however, immediately stops him and reciprocates by touching his feet thrice.

After Mr Negi, BJP’s Vishwas Nagar candidate, Om Prakash Sharma, also bowed to touch PM Modi’s feet but was stopped midway.

This was not the first time that the Prime Minister has reciprocated and touched the feet of those who touched his at public events.

Ravinder Singh Negi up against Avadh Ojha

Ravinder Singh Negi is up against civil aspirant coach Avadh Ojha, who is contesting on an AAP ticket from the Patparganj seat, and Congress candidate Anil Chaudhary.

The seat was earlier won thrice by AAP leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who is contesting from Jangpura in the 2025 Delhi assembly elections.

Mr Negi is currently the BJP councillor from the Vinod Nagar (East) constituency.

PM Modi attacks AAP, Congress

During the rally, Prime Minister Modi attacked the AAP and the Congress.

Thanking the massive gathering, he said, “This sight reflects the mood of Delhi and the message of its mandate. Delhi is changing. Fake promises will no longer work. The loot and lies will not continue. The people of Delhi want a double-engine BJP government that ensures both the welfare of the poor and the development of the city.”

He promised to bring relief to Delhi’s residents by addressing key issues.

“Delhi wants a government that builds homes for the poor, modernises the city, ensures water supply to every household, and frees them from tanker mafias. That is why the entire Delhi is today saying, ‘AAPda jaayegi, BJP aayegi’ (AAPda will go, BJP will come),” he said in a dig at former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP.

Delhi will go to assembly polls on February 5 and the results will be announced on February 8.

New Delhi:

Sandeep Dikshit, Congress candidate for the New Delhi Assembly constituency, expressed confidence in securing a victory in the upcoming elections as he is filing nomination on Thursday.

Reflecting on his interactions with the public, Mr Dikshit said he is optimistic about the party’s prospects, that his meetings with residents have shown a positive shift in sentiment toward the Congress.

“I have a very good feeling about our chances,” he stated, adding that after meeting numerous people and gauging their opinions on other political parties, he realised that there was growing support for Congress.

He emphasised that understanding the public mood was crucial in forming his outlook for the elections. Mr Dikshit also shared his belief that voters were increasingly dissatisfied with the performance of the AAP government.

In response to the ongoing controversy surrounding BJP leader Parvesh Verma, including an FIR related to his actions at a temple, Mr Dikshit commented on the allegations, particularly the incident of distributing shoes.

He criticised such tactics, noting, “These actions are not representative of someone committed to social service. Our focus is on public service, not handing out charity.” He emphasised that politics should be about policies and not about making promises through material giveaways.

“If even a few voters change their votes based on inducements, it goes against the very spirit of democracy,” he added.

Mr Dikshit also addressed the recent approval by the Ministry of Home Affairs for a money laundering case against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. He remarked that this was expected given the ongoing rumours and the financial irregularities observed during elections in Goa and Punjab.

“We had seen significant financial activity by the Aam Aadmi Party on the ground,” he said. He also referenced a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India that exposed financial misconduct within Kejriwal’s party.

In Delhi, the election to the 70-member Assembly will be held on February 5 and the counting of votes on February 8.

]]>

2024 saw some significant elections, with key changes in the United Kingdom, the United States and India, among many others. As 2025 gets underway, the scene is set for even more elections, with potential repercussions across the globe. In Germany, the collapse of the “traffic light” coalition will mean a new election amid a general European tilt to the right. Justin Trudeau stepping down as prime minister of Canada will offer a new challenge to the country’s electorate, even as Donald Trump takes over in the neighbouring U.S, threatening tariffs and referring to Canada as the 51st State of his country.

Closer home, the Delhi Assembly elections will determine the fate of the Aam Aadmi Party after a particularly turbulent couple of years.

We take a look and some more significant elections which may shape the world in the year to come.

Elections in India

Delhi

Elections will be held across Delhi’s 70 constituencies on February 5, 2025, with counting to be held on February 8. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party will hope to retain power for the third time on its own, announcing that it would not ally with the Congress for these elections.

Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of AAP has made several poll promises, including free treatment for all senior citizens in all Delhi hospitals under the ‘Sanjeevani Yojana.’ The Aam Aadmi Party has also launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, under which eligible women above 18 years will receive ₹1,000 per month.

Meanwhile, the BJP is likely to rely on Bihar-based allies Janata Dal (United) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), given the strong presence of migrants from Bihar, including poorvanchalis, and Uttar Pradesh.

The AAP had a strong showing in 2020, winning 63 of 70 seats. In 2015, it had won 67 seats.

Bihar

Elections to the 243-member Bihar Assembly are due in late 2025, potentially in October/November. The JD(U) under the leadership of Nitish Kumar will seek to maintain its grip on the State during the Assembly elections.

Mr. Kumar has even launched a Pragati Yatra from Champaran on December 23, with the slogan Jab Baat Bihar Ki ho, Naam Sirf Nitish Kumar Ka Ho” (When it is about Bihar, Nitish Kumar should be the only name). Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the State’s Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has also confirmed that the NDA will fight under Mr. Kumar’s leadership.

Also read: Will Nitish Kumar remain the face of the NDA in the Bihar Assembly election?

Rajya Sabha

Polls will be held for the Rajya Sabha as members from certain States finish their terms. In Assam, two of seven seats will go to the polls after the tenures of BJP MP Mission Ranjan Das and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MP Birendra Prasad Baishya will end on June 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, six of 18 seats in Tamil Nadu will also go the polls as M.M. Abdulla, M Shanmugam, P Wilson, N Chandrasegharan, Vaiko and Anbumani Ramadoss finish their terms this year.

International elections

Canada

Justin Trudeau stepped down as Canada’s prime minister on January 6, 2025, after almost nine years in power, amid growing unpopularity in Canada. His minority Liberal Party government, which holds only 154 of 338 seats in the House of Commons, was further weakened after the New Democratic Party ended a 2022 deal to back the party on key votes.

The Canadian Parliament, which was to resume on January 27, will now resume in March, allowing the Liberal Party to pick a new leader. It has said that it will pick a new prime minister by March 9.

The three main opposition parties have said they will launch a no-confidence motion in Parliament once it resumes, which may lead to a spring election. The Liberal Party has seen a dip in its popularity over the last few years, even as the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre have made a strong showing. Also in the field are the left-of-center Bloc Quebecois, the third-largest party in the House, which seeks to withdraw Quebec from the Canadian confederation.

According to a recent poll, the Liberal Party trails the opposition Conservatives 45% to 23%

Germany

Germany is gearing up for a general election to its Bundestag (the lower house of its parliament) on February 23, following the collapse of its “traffic-light” coalition of social democrats, liberals and greens late last year. The collapse was triggered by Chancellor Olaf Scholz firing Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the Free Democratic party (FDP), a liberal pro-business party that was part of the coalition.

Other parties in the fray are the Social Democrats (SPD), a centre-left party that is the nation’s oldest political party, led by Olaf Scholz; the Centre-right Christian Democrats, which include CDU and its Bavarian sister-party CSU, to which Angela Merkel belonged and which is now led by corporate lawyer Friedrich Merz; Die Grünen or the Greens led by Robert Habeck, who is presently serving as economy minister, while Annalena Baerbock, another party member, serves as foreign minister; the far-right AfD – Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), which opposes immigration and the Eurozone, and is co-chaired by Alice Weidel; Die Linke – the Left – a leftwing populist party helmed by Jan Van Aken and Heidi Reichinnek; and the BSW – Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, founded by a former Linke politician.

A majority of any one party is unlikely in Bundestag, making a coalition government imminent.

Poland

Poland shall hold presidential elections in May to decide the successor to current president Andrzej Duda, who hails from the Law and Justice party (PiS). The chief candidates in the running are Rafał Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw, who belongs to the Civic Platform party (PO), and Karol Nawrocki, a historian, who is the candidate for PiS. Opinion polls have predicted a potential victory for the Civil Platform candidate.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk (Civic Platform) has led the country since December 2023. Although the prime minister is in charge of regular governance, the President still plays a crucial role, having the power to veto government policies.

Romania

Romania will hold new presidential elections in 2025 after the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of voting due to concerns over foreign interference, including Russian influence on TikTok. Centrist, pro-EU candidate Elena Lasconi and far-right, pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu had advanced to the second round in this election. Official proceedings have been launched by the European Commission against TikTok under the Digital Services Act.

Klaus Iohannis, the former president, will stay in power till a successor is selected. The legislative elections, which were not annulled, saw a victory for the Social Democrats.

Belarus

In what is being considered a pro-forma election, lawmakers in Belarus have announced that the country’s next presidential election will be held on January 26. This is expected to return authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko to power, extending his three decades in power.

This would be the seventh consecutive term for Mr. Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994 and is referred to as “Europe’s last dictator,” suppressing dissent and criticism.  The last election, held in 2020, was deemed fraudulent by the West and the Opposition. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who ran against Lukashenko, was subsequently forced to flee to neighbouring Lithuania. She now runs a government in exile, recognised by the European Parliament, and has called the upcoming elections a farce.

Croatia

Croatia’s incumbent President Zoran Milanović was re-elected following a run-off on January 12 against Dragan Primorac from the ruling conservative party. Mr. Milanovic had won the first round of the presidential elections on December 29, 2024, but missed the required half-way mark by 5,000 votes.

Italy

An important electoral test awaits Giorgia Meloni in September 2025, when elections will be held in six important regions: Puglia, Campania, Le Marche, Tuscany, Valle d’Aosta, and Veneto. In Puglia, MEP Antonio Decaro, chair of the Environment committee and of the Democratic Party could run as governor.

In November 2023, coalition parties were outflanked by the centre-left coalition in the regional elections in Emilia-Romagna and Umbria — a setback for Ms. Meloni.

Kosovo

Kosovar President Vjosa Osmani has set February 9, 2025, as the date for regular parliamentary elections in the Balkan country. The election campaign is expected to begin now, as winter holidays ended on January 7. The election is likely to held with EU obsevers.

Gabon

Gabon’s military leaders say they plan to hold a general election in August 2025.This follows pressure from the international community to announce a timetable for a return to civilian rule.

General Brice Oligui Nguema seized power from his cousin, President Ali Bongo Ondimba, in August 2023, promising to save the country from a “severe institutional” crisis. Gabon has been under the contol of the Bongo family for 55 years. Gen. Oligui Nguema assured citizens that he would hand power back to civilians after a two-year transition, but now also seeks to win the election scheduled for August.

Tanzania

Tanzania will hold general elections in October. Incumbent president Samia Suluhu Hassan, who took over after the death of John Magufuli in 2021. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party faces stiff Opposition from the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) and ACT-Wazalendo, with increased political freedom post reforms by President Samia.

Bolivia

Bolivia will hold general elections on August 17 to elect the President, Vice President, members of the Chamber of Deputies, and members of the Chamber of Senators.

Matters have been complicated for the ruling party Movement for Socialism (MAS) after ex-President Evo Morales left in November 2019 after a failed attempt to be re-elected for a fourth term in an election which was alleged to be fradulent. Mr. Morales, Bolivia’s first Indigenous president, came to power in 2006 and ruled for nearly 14 years. The country is now led by Luis Arce, former economy minister under Mr. Morales. Supporters of Mr. Arce and Mr. Morales, the founder of MAS, have sparred internally within the party. While Mr. Arce is seeking re-election, Bolivia’s Constitutional Tribunal in November 2024 barred Mr. Morales from running again for elected office.

Meanwhile, the Opposition too has not put up a strong front. Some leaders, such as Santa Cruz activist Romulo Calvo, governor Luis Fernando Camacho and Añez, are in jail for their alleged involvement in a coup, among other charges. Former interim President Carlos Mesa has not been able to make electoral gains either.

Honduras

General elections are due to be held in Honduras by November 2025 to elect the President, members of the National Congress and 20 members of the Central American Parliament. Incumbent president Xiomara Castro will seek to retain power. Ms. Castro recently unilaterally ended a 112-year-old U.S.-Honduran extradition treaty, accusing the U.S. of pressuring the Honduran armed forces into removing her from office.

Argentina

Argentina is set to hold a midterm election this year, as the country faces one of its worst economic declines in recent years. Argentine President Javier Milei recently launched his own political party, and winning the 2025 elections would give Mr. Milei’s libertarian La Libertad Avanza (Liberty Advances) party power in Congress. The party currently is a minority in both chambers of Congress, hindering its legislative and policy efforts.

Ecuador

Ecuador will hold general elections on Febuary 9, 2025, to elect its president, 151 assembly members, and five Andean parliamentarians. This follows after former president Guillermo Lasso dissolved the Assembly in May 2023 by executive decree during a socio-economic and security crisis. The frontrunner in the race is incumbent president Daniel Noboa, followed by the Citizen Revolution’s Luisa González, Jean Topic, running for the second time, and indigenous leader Leonidas Iza.

Chile

Chile’s presidential election is due to take place on November 16, 2025, with a potential run-off between the top two candidates highly likely to take place on December 14. This is owing to Chile’s ballotage system, according to which a candidate requires 50% plus one vote to win.

The ruling coalition is yet to select its presidential candidate, with ex-president Michelle Bachelet, Mayor of Maipú   Tomás Vodanovic, and Home Affairs Minister Carolina Toha being among those whose names have been suggested. The incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, who helms the left-wing Broad Front coalition, is barred from running for a second consecutive term. Polls point to a potential win for the Opposition party, the right-wing coalition Chile Vamos, led by the former mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei.

The Philippines

The Philippines will hold an important midterm election in May 2025. The election for local officials, district representatives to the lower house and 12 senators is often viewed as a referendum on the sitting president. After the end of Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship in 1986, Filipino presidents can only hold one six-year term.

This election is also important for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. amid a spat with Vice President Sara Duterte, the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte. The two ran as allies in the 2022 elections, where the post for vice-president saw a separate election. Equations worsened after it became clear that Mr. Marcos Jr. did not regard Ms. Duterte as his successor. Ms. Duterte is likely to face an impeachment trial for the mismanagement of funds, which would result in her removal from office, and bar her from a presidential bid in 2028.

Polls have indicated that candidates for senate backed by Mr. Marcos Jr. may win nine or 10 (of the total 12.)

Any advantage for Ms. Duterte is likely to make things uncomfortable for the Marcos family, which has been corrupt and embroiled in political scandal numerous times.

Australia

Australia will hold a federal election in 2025. The nation sees a unique system whereby the Prime Minister (currently Anthony Albanese) decides the timing of the election. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that he will serve a full three-year term.

The constitution requires elections to be held no later than 68 days after the House of Representatives terms expire — which is on July 25 this year. However, since half of the Senate’s terms end on June 30, an election must take place before then. Considering procedural factors and the tradition of holding house and half-Senate elections together, the latest possible date for the next federal election is May 17.

Meanwhile, western Australia will hold State elections on March 8.

New Delhi:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a broadside against INDIA bloc ally and Delhi’s former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal over rising “pollution and inflation” at his first public rally for assembly elections in the national capital.

“Arvind Kejriwal had said that he would clean Delhi, remove corruption, and turn the national capital into Paris. What actually happened – one cannot move around due to pollution and inflation is rising,” Mr Gandhi said addressing his ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ public meeting in Seelampur.

“Arvind Kejriwal had talked of removing corruption. Has he removed corruption? Pollution, corruption and inflation are on the rise in Delhi,” he said.

The AAP chief reacted to the blistering attack by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and said while Mr Gandhi was fighting to save the Congress, “my fight is to save the country”.

“Today, Rahul Gandhi came to Delhi. He abused me a lot. But I will not comment on his statements,” he wrote on X in Hindi.

Accusing the AAP of keeping mum on the issue of caste census, Mr Gandhi promised a caste survey in Delhi if the Congress formed the government in the national capital.

The former Congress president sought people’s support to make the party victorious in Delhi, where it failed to win a single seat in the last two elections. He asserted that the party would ensure Delhi’s development as in the past under Sheila Dikshit’s government. “Neither (Arvind) Kejriwal nor the BJP can do what the Congress had done,” Mr Gandhi said.

The Congress has been highlighting the achievements of the 15-year rule under Sheila Dikshit.

In 2013, Arvind Kejriwal – a rookie politician back then – defeated the three-time chief minister in her constituency of New Delhi.

For this year’s election, the Congress has fielded Sandeep Dikshit, the son of Sheila Dikshit, against Mr Kejriwal.

The AAP and Congress have decided to go solo in the assembly elections, months after the parties fought the Lok Sabha Elections in Delhi together. Their Lok Sabha partnership ended in a debacle as the BJP won all the seven seats.

In the run-up to the Delhi assembly elections, the parties have engaged in bitter political fight, targeting each other over issues ranging from corruption and free welfare schemes, like free water, power, education, health and bus travel.

The Delhi Congress has even released a 12-point “white paper” against the AAP and BJP for mismanagement of pollution, civic facilities and law and order in the national capital.

In the 2020 assembly elections, the AAP won 62 of the 70 seats and BJP secured eight seats while Congress failed to open its account.

Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held on February 5 and votes counted on February 8.

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP candidate Atishi will file her nomination today from the Kalkaji Assembly Constituency for the Delhi Assembly polls, scheduled on February 5.

In a post on X, Atishi said that first, she would visit the Kalkaji Temple to get the blessing of Kalka Maa.
“I am going to file my nomination today. I will go to Kalkaji temple and take the blessings of Kalka Mai. Then after praying at Giri Nagar Gurudwara, I will start the nomination rally. In the last 5 years, I have received a lot of love from my family in Kalkaji. I am sure their blessings will remain with me,” she said.

Speaking to ANI, the AAP leader targeted the BJP, accusing it of doing “Farzivada” in the Assembly polls.

“The BJP has become accustomed to winning elections through ‘farzivada’. They may have done this in Maharashtra and Haryana as well, but in Delhi, they got caught. From December 15 to January 8, there were 13,000 new voting applications in the New Delhi Legislative Assembly. It is clear that the BJP is indulging in forgery. We will not let the BJP do anything wrong. The BJP has been in power at the Centre for over 10 years, and what have they done for the Delhi people? Their only job is to abuse Kejriwal. They neither have a face for the CM nor any vision,” Atishi said.

The AAP leader is in the electoral fray against the BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’ Alka Lamba for the Kalkaji seat.

Meanwhile, just six hours after asking people to fund her assembly election campaign, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi raised more than Rs 15 lakh through her online portal on Sunday.

Atishi has set a goal of garnering Rs 40 lakh as her election campaign fund, contesting from the Kalkaji Assembly constituency. As of January 10, 5:30 PM, the party’s donation page shows 278 people have donated a total of Rs 15,15,930 to her.

Earlier, Atishi turned to crowdfunding, claiming that people have donated money supporting the party’s “honest politics” and that the party does not take money from businessmen.

“People donated money to support Aam Admi Party’s honest politics. We don’t take money from big businessmen for elections. AAP government works for the common people. For my election from Kalkaji, I am launching a crowdfunding campaign for Rs 40 lakh, which I need for the election. People can donate any amount they want,” Atishi told reporters here on Sunday.

The Delhi assembly polls will be held in a single phase on February 5 and the counting of votes will take place on February 8.

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who is seeking re-election from Kalkaji in next month’s Assembly elections, on Sunday hit out at her rival BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri for his alleged remarks on her family made last week.

In an interview with PTI Videos, Atishi also claimed that her crowd-funding initiative launched on Sunday morning generated Rs 17 lakh in donations within just 10 hours.

Atishi, who defeated BJP’s Dharambir Singh in 2020, said she will proceed to file her nomination for the February 5 polls at the district magistrate’s office after praying at the Kalkaji temple and at a gurdwara.

On her BJP rival’s recent remarks, Atishi said, “Bidhuri has shown his character. Within 24 hours of getting a ticket, he made an indecent comment on Priyanka Gandhi. In the next 24 hours, he abused me and my family from Prime Minister Modi’s stage at a rally.” At a ‘Parivaratan’ rally of the BJP in Rohini last week, Bidhuri targeted Atishi for dropping her surname and went on to say that she “changed her father”.

“Not a single BJP leader has said that Bidhuri was wrong, or asked him to apologise to Pryanka Gandhi or me (for his remarks),” Atishi said.

“This means the BJP supports Bidhuri’s indecent language and the abuses he hurled at women. Had they not, they would have said he was wrong and asked him to apologise to Priayanka Gandhi and me. But they did not do so,” she added.

Before targeting Atishi, Bidhuri had stoked a controversy by claiming that he would make roads which are like Congress leader “Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks” in his constituency, a comment for which he later expressed regret.

Atishi, who launched her crowd-funding campaign to contest the polls on Sunday, called the initiative an “example of honesty”.

“I need Rs 40 lakh to contest the polls which is .0005 per cent of the budget of our government. AAP is a party that never earned even a single penny dishonestly and that is why we still seek donations from the people to fight the elections,” she said.

The campaign launched at 10 am raised Rs 17 lakh by 8 pm in the form of small donations worth Rs 100 and similar amounts, which show the donors were commoners wishing to support AAP, she claimed.

“I hope the target will be met in coming days,” she said.

Amid BJP’s claims that AAP was helping illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas staying in Delhi to become voters to use them as vote banks, Atishi hit back by questioning the security on the borders under the BJP-led Central government.

“Amit Shah should tell from where these Bangladeshis and Rohingyas came. He is responsible for border security and stopping infiltration through the India-Bangladesh borders,” she said.

“How did the Rohingyas reach Delhi? What does it speak of the law and order and security arrangements if they managed to reach Delhi after crossing the borders and passing through many states. If Rohingyas have reached Delhi, only the BJP is responsible for it,” Atishi said.

Talking about her re-election bid from Kalkaji, she said the constituency was her “Karmbhumi” for the last five years where people considered her as their own “daughter and sister”.

Expressing hopes of getting the wholehearted support of the voters this time as well, Atishi said she developed the constituency by treating its residents like her own family.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly will go to polls on February 5. The results will be out on February 8.

New Delhi:

As Assembly elections draw closer in Delhi, AAP convenor and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday accused the BJP-led Central government of reneging on its promise to provide reservation to the capital’s Jat community.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Kejriwal said he wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the inclusion of Delhi’s Jat community in the Central OBC list.

He also accused the Centre of misleading the community for the past decade, and failing to deliver on its promises.

“In 2015, the BJP invited Jat leaders to the prime minister’s residence and assured them that Delhi’s Jat community would be included in the Central OBC list. Union Home Minister Amit Shah promised the same in 2019. However, nothing has been done to fulfil these promises,” Mr Kejriwal said.

Drawing comparisons, he questioned why Jat students from Rajasthan benefit from reservations in Delhi University (DU), while Jat students from Delhi are denied the same.

“Thousands of children from the Jat community in Delhi are unable to secure admission in DU because they are not part of the Central OBC list,” he said.

Mr Kejriwal also alleged that despite Delhi’s Jats being recognised under the OBC category in the state, the Central government has refused to extend the benefits to them.

“This is nothing but betrayal. The Centre must include Delhi’s Jat community in the OBC list to ensure they receive reservations in Central government institutions, including for jobs and college admissions,” the AAP supremo said.

Central agencies like the MCD, DDA, and PWD operate extensively in Delhi, and including Jats in the OBC list would open up significant opportunities for them, Mr Kejriwal said, as he vowed to continue the fight until the community’s demands are met.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly will go to polls on February 5. The results will be out on February 8.

The BJP has released the first list of its candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi. The party has released names of candidates who would be contesting on 29 seats out of the total 70 seats in the national capital.

The Aam Aadmi Party has released the names of all the candidates that will be contesting in the Assembly elections. The elections in the National Capital are scheduled for February.

Former BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma will be contesting against former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat.

Former Delhi Transport Minister, Kailash Gehlot, once a close aide of Arvind Kejriwal, left AAP and joined the BJP months before the elections, and will be contesting from the Bijwasan seat.

Ramesh Bidhuri, who was the BJP MP from South Delhi till 2024, will be contesting from the Kalkaji constituency against Chief Minister Atishi. Mr Bidhuri was not given a ticket by the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Congress has fielded Alka Lamba from the Kalkaji constituency.

Arvinder Singh Lovely, who was a minister in Sheila Dikshit’s cabinet from 2003 to 2013, left the Congress last year and joined the BJP, he will now be contesting from the Gandhinagar seat in east Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party has been in power since 2015, securing a thumping majority twice in the Assembly elections. But, in the Lok Sabha elections, AAP has failed to win a single seat since 2014 and BJP won all seven.

Yesterday, sources told NDTV that Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva will not be contesting in the upcoming Assembly elections. This came amid talks that he might be contesting in the polls.

The upcoming elections are being viewed as a fiercely contested battle between the BJP and AAP. The Congress, which was in power in Delhi for 15 straight years, has not been able to win any seat in the last two editions of the Delhi polls.

Allies in the Opposition bloc INDIA, the Congress and AAP are fighting against each other in the Delhi polls. The parties even fought separately in the Haryana elections last year.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Amanatullah Khan from the Okhla constituency in the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Mr Khan, a two-time legislator, is a prominent Muslim face for the Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

Here are five facts about Amanatullah Khan:

1) Born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, in 1974, Amanatullah Khan’s family later moved to Delhi. Before joining the AAP, Mr Khan contested the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections unsuccessfully with the Lok Janshakti Party.

2) Amanatullah Khan joined the AAP in 2015 and was elected from the Okhla seat. The 50-year-old defeated BJP’s Brahm Singh by a margin of 60,000 votes. Soon after his election, Mr Khan was embroiled in an internal party rift between Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Kumar Vishwas. In 2017, he accused Mr Vishwas of being a “BJP agent,” which led to his suspension from the party. The suspension was lifted months later.

3) Amanatullah Khan gained prominence during the 2019-20 protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Shaheen Bagh. Although AAP distanced itself from the protests, Mr Khan participated in demonstrations.

4) Last year, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case involving the alleged purchase of Rs 36 crore worth of land in Okhla. A Delhi court rejected the charges and granted him bail, saying the necessary approval for prosecution wasn’t obtained.

5) His earlier legal troubles included a 2022 arrest by the Delhi Police during a demolition drive in Okhla. As of 2022, 18 FIRs had been filed against him, with 10 resulting in acquittals or discharges. In May 2024, he was charged by the Noida Police for allegedly assaulting a petrol pump employee.
