The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction dynamics make it difficult for anyone to predict a player’s destination. Deepak Chahar, a key player for Chennai Super Kings over the years, was at the center of an intense bidding war between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians before eventually being signed by the Hardik Pandya-led franchise. Chahar was with CSK from 2018 and wanted to continue his journey with the franchise, but the auction brought a twist to the tale. Despite CSK’s failure to bring him back, Chahar had no complaints from the franchise.

Chahar, during a chat with Sports Tak, said MS Dhoni is the reason behind his special connection with the CSK. Because of him, he wanted to continue his IPL journey in the yellow shirt. But, the auction dynamics didn’t allow that to happen.

“Mahi bhai has supported me from the start, that’s why I wanted to go to CSK. But my name came on the second day at the auction, so I had a fair idea that it would be difficult for me to get back to CSK. They had a low purse, but still bid till INR 9 crore despite a purse of INR 13 crore,” Chahar said.

Chahar’s name came up in the auction on Day 2. By then, CSK had spent most of their purse, with only Rs. 13 crore left. The pacer admitted that he knew it would be difficult for the Yellow Army to re-sign him from the position.

“I had made up my mind that it would be difficult. Last year, my name came first, that’s why it was easier to get back to CSK,” he said.

Chahar has revelled at CSK over the years, especially under the guidance of MS Dhoni but the IPL 2025 season gives him a fresh opportunity to rediscover himself. Chahar has also been out of Team India’s plans for a while.

Playing with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, however, is expected to give his international career a big boost too.

IPL 2025 mega auction turned out to be a thrilling affair as a total of 577 players went under the hammer. The event which lasted for two days in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, saw 182 players getting sold for a whopping combined fee of Rs 639.15 crore. All the ten franchises spent days and weeks to brainstorm and form a promising squad for the upcoming IPL season. Mega auction meant that the teams had to let go some of their star players and this exactly happened in the chase of Chennai Super Kings, who had to part ways with pacer Deepak Chahar.

The star India pacer joined CSK in 2018 and played 76 matches for them. With his fiery spells, he has immensely contributed in CSK’s title wins in 2018, 2021, and 2023. However, he was released by the five-time champions ahead of the 2025 auctions and was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 9.25 crore.

During his stint with CSK, Chahar took 76 wickets and troubled the opposition batters with his ultimate pace. Apart from this, he even proposed his wife Jaya Bharadwaj (then girlfriend) in the stands in Dubai, during a match against Punjab Kings in 2021.

As Chahar has now parted ways with CSK, his wife Jaya took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt message for the five-time champions, along with a series of pictures.

“From cheering in the stands to celebrating love on the field where I said “yes” in front of the whole crowd. My heart will always be tied to this team. Forever grateful for the wonderful memories @chennaiipl,” wrote Jaya in the caption.

CSK retained Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and MS Dhoni.

Indian cricketer Deepak Chahar shared his excitement and thoughts after being acquired by Mumbai Indians (MI) for a staggering Rs 9.25 crore. Reflecting on his move from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to MI, Chahar remarked in an exclusive interview with JioCinema, “I’m quite happy. I had hoped to continue with CSK, but no regrets. Now, I’ll be playing for another great franchise that has won five IPL trophies. I’ll obviously miss playing with MS Dhoni. Mumbai Indians is a great franchise, so I’m really looking forward to playing for them.” Chahar also provided an update on his fitness and training regimen.

“After the last IPL season, I went to the UK for training. I was training with a big football club there. Then, I came back and played five Ranji Trophy matches, bowling about 150 overs. Now, I’m playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. So, I’ve been playing cricket regularly for the past six months and training well. My main goal is to play for India again. To achieve that, I need to play all 14 matches, perform at my full potential, and hopefully make a comeback for Team India. This is going to be a very important season for me,” he shared, as quoted by JioCinema.

Discussing his new team, Chahar expressed optimism about MI’s prospects for the upcoming season.

“The MI team for this season looks strong. They have always been a dominant side in the history of IPL, and they’ve won five seasons for obvious reasons. I’m happy to be a part of this team and hope to win more trophies in the coming seasons. Also, I’m hoping to get the opportunity to bat as well, as that’s something I didn’t get much chance to do at CSK. So, I’ll definitely look to give my best with both bat and ball,” he said.

On his role as a bowler, especially in the death overs, Chahar stated, “As a bowler, I like to take on challenges and perform to the best of my ability. At CSK, I had my roles, and now at MI, I will have different roles, but I’m ready for it. I hope to do well with both bat and ball and contribute to MI’s success. Wankhede has a seaming track, and in my past performances, I’ve done well there. So, I’ll be looking to continue doing well for my team.”

“Mahi bhai came up to him, kept his arms around Deepak’s shoulder, said a few things to him and went back. We obviously didn’t know. So when the match got over, we asked what happened? He said, ‘You know what he said? He said a few wonderful things (likely abuses), and then he added ‘Bewakoof tu nahi hai, bewakoof main hu (You’re not the fool, I am). So that is a tale we always remember. Now it’s Deepak’s turn and he will be part of that queue. At the same time, Dhoni bhai loves Chahar equally.”

There is still no clarity on whether MS Dhoni will play in IPL 2025 or not.

Former India, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ambati Rayudu has mocked Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) with an Instagram post following their playoff exit from the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) ongoing season on Wednesday. RCB suffered a four-wicket loss against Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator encounter at Narendra Modi Stadium to end their six-match winning campaign in the season. Taking to Instagram, Rayudu shared a video of Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali and Devon Conway enjoying their last year’s IPL title indicating five with their hands. He captioned the post, “Just a kind reminder from the 5-time champions. Sometimes a gentle reminder is required”.

His post came after RCB’s defeat against Rajasthan Royals as the former knocked out CSK from the tournament following their 27-run win over the defending champion in Bengaluru last week. After the win against CSK, Rayudu said that RCB couldn’t win the IPL title just by beating them and had to play with the hunger.

“If you talk about RCB today, it shows that only passion and aggressive celebrations don’t win you trophies. You need to plan. You didn’t get the IPL trophy just by reaching the playoffs. You have to play with the same hunger,” Rayudu had said.

“Don’t think you will win the IPL trophy just by beating CSK. You will have to come next year once again,” he had added.

RCB had a bitter-sweet campaign in the season as they overcame their sloppy start to qualify for the playoffs at the back of six consecutive wins but failed to go ahead of the Eliminator obstacle. Other than Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar, no batter managed to leave a positive mark while the bowling unit looked all over the place.

In Qualifier 2 of the IPL, Rajasthan Royals will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

Mayank Yadav, after his recent injury concern, may be out of the rest of the IPL 2024, according to a report in the Cricbuzz. The journey of Lucknow Super Giants pacer, who bowled a 156.6 kmph delivery in the IPL 2024, this year seems all but over after he sustained a suspected abdominal muscle “tear” during the game against Mumbai Indians, making it his second injury breakdown in past four weeks. Also, Chennai Super Kings pacer Deepak Chahar may no longer take part in the IPL 2024 due to an injury. “Deepak injury is not looking good. I will not say he is ruled out of the season but doubtful,” Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings, said about Chahar, who pulled his hamstring.

Chahar bowled only two deliveries before walking out the the game against Punjab Kings at the Chepauk.

Also, the report added that there is “serious doubt” over the participation of Mayank for LSG in this season.

Earlier, a PTI report claimed that Mayank Yadav ‘might just’ be ablr to play if LSG reach playoffs.

“Mayank has a tear but it is more likely a grade 1 tear. It will be cutting it fine but in case LSG qualifies for the play-offs, he might just be able to play the knock-out games. But it is like hoping against hope and right now he is doubtful for the remaining IPL games,” a BCCI source informed PTI on condition of anonymity.

Mayank, who burst into the scene with 155 click deliveries and back-to-back ‘Player of the Match’ awards at the start of the IPL, broke down in the third match and was ruled out for four weeks.

He made a comeback against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday after passing fitness tests but was forced back into the dugout after bowling 3.1 overs in which he gave away 31 runs.

Had Mayank been fit all this while, there was a possibility of him being a left-field selection in the T20 World Cup but right now, handling him with care is the primary job of the Indian cricket establishment.

Deepak Chahar Doesn’t Look Good: Chennai Super Kings Head Coach Stephen Fleming On His Possible Injury

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that seamer Deepak Chahar’s latest injury “doesn’t look good” but he is hoping for a positive report from the franchise’s medical team ahead of the business phase of the ongoing IPL. Although Fleming did not divulge any details on Chahar’s new injury, the 31-year-old seamer was seen pulling off his run-up in just the second ball of Punjab Kings chase here on Wednesday night. It could be a possible hamstring injury as, after having a chat with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the physio, Chahar walked off ground holding his hamstring and did not bowl any further in the match.

Chahar’s career has been marred by injuries in the last couple of years, costing him a permanent spot in the Indian team.

“Yeah, the travelogue is pretty busy. There’s a lot of ins and outs. So, Deepak Chahar doesn’t look good,” said Fleming during the post-match presser.

“The initial feeling wasn’t great. So, I’m hoping for a more positive report when the physio and the doctor have a look.” Chahar’s injury somewhat forced Gaikwad to bring in Shivam Dube for an over, who has mainly been used as a batter this season.

But Dube went for 14 in the only over he bowled, and Fleming admitted that with the Impact Player rule, Dube is not suited for the role in the IPL and will have his chances in proper conditions.

“He (Dube) is ready to bowl and is working hard on it. He will play a role in the right conditions, and with the Impact Player rule, we have players who can fit the role better. Currently, his necessity to bowl is pretty much small,” the coach said.

CSK suffered a seven-wicket defeat to PBKS, their second loss at home this season, managing a meagre 162 for 7, which was comfortably chased down with 13 balls to spare.

Talking about the demanding wicket at Chepauk, Fleming said, “It’s difficult, and we have spoken on the unpredictability of the wickets here before. Batting first makes it difficult for us to judge as to what a good competitive score is.

“We had a couple of 200s (before), which was in our minds today. But, the wicket was very sticky.

“We also had a good start in the (first) six overs before things became difficult. We also tried a few lefties in the form of Dube and (Ravindra) Jadeja but we just couldn’t get anything through the middle. They bowled really well, they got good purchase and held onto it. We just got stifled through the middle, which prevented us from getting a score of 180,” he said.

With a low score to defend, Fleming was impressed with the commitment and performance shown by English pacer Richard Gleeson, who made his debut last night.

“Richard Gleeson was good, and it was a positive. Losing Fizz (Mustafizur Rahman) is disappointing.

“Tushar (Deshpande) has a bit of flu going around as well. So, we’ve had to make a few changes, which is unusual. Again, that’s part of it, and we have got the resources,” he said.

“Just they haven’t had the game time to be really comfortable with their roles and us to be comfortable with a game plan, which we’re struggling a little.” Although veteran opener Ajinkya Rahane managed to get to double figures after a lean phase in the last four games, he didn’t last beyond a 24-ball 29.

“I thought he (Rahane) was good today. He’s been probably a bit too aggressive in what he wants to do,” Fleming observed.

“Keep in mind, we’re batting on wickets here that we don’t know how they are gonna play. So, we got to take a bit of a pause to see what a good score is. If you are 3 for 30, the game is pretty much over.

“His (Rahane) hitting that was so good last year, is more crisp. It’s not for lack of intent. He has doubled up on intent. We’re fine with Jinks and the role he plays.”

Another pacer with an outside chance of making India’s T20 World Cup squad, Mukesh Kumar may not have been considered for the India T20 World Cup selection a month ago, but his performance in IPL 2024 has certainly put him on the radar. Mukesh has eight wickets in four IPL matches this season and the right-arm medium pacer has also taken 12 wickets in 14 outings for India. Mukesh’s performances in IPL 2024 has helped Delhi Capitals gain some form of late and if he continues to produce strong displays for DC, the 30-year-old might just be one of India’s pacers at the T20 World Cup in 2024.

Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar is another pace option for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He has 31 wickets at an average of 24.09 and an economy of 8.30 in T20Is for India. However, his lack of consistency makes it unlikely that he will join the Men in Blue squad. Deepak’s main competitor, Arshdeep, is a death-over specialist with greater international experience than him. Arshdeep also has an edge as a left-arm pacer. Chahar can only force his way into selection contention if he has a highly successful IPL 2024 season. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Fleming, a former Kiwi all-format skipper, said Chahar was well and truly on the recovery road and presently going through his rehabilitation phase.

The head coach, for good measure, reminded the media persons that 32-year-old bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who came in as a like-for-like replacement for Chhahar in Chennai’s previous match against the Mumbai Indians (MI), fared well.

“He is doing his rehabs well. It was a minor injury nothing to worry about. Shardul Thakur bowled well in the last match against Mumbai so we opted to give time to Chahar to recover well,” said Fleming on Chahar at the pre-match press conference.

Earlier, on Sunday, Thakur, replacing Chahar in the playing eleven, failed to pick up wickets but did manage to put a leash on the scoring rate, conceding just 35 runs in his full quota of four overs.
