Jasprit Bumrah‘s meteoric rise in cricket already solidified him as one of the best bowlers in the modern era. Deep Dasgupta reflected on the evolution of Bumrah’s game and his remarkable growth over the years, “People often talk about the uniqueness of his action. In the first 1-2 years, that novelty factor made it tough for batters to figure him out. But here’s the greatness of Jasprit Bumrah-he’s been playing for 5-6 years now, in all formats, and still, batters struggle to decode him. So, I think we overemphasize the novelty factor; it’s more about his ability to keep evolving,” said Deep Dasgupta in the latest episode of Star Sports’ Deep Point.

Sanjay Bangar highlighted Bumrah’s adaptability as a crucial element of his brilliance. “The most special thing about Bumrah is his belief in the art of fast bowling. Traditionally, fast bowlers intimidate batters and then get them out. But Bumrah does it differently-he relies on skill rather than fear. He’s not a bowler who gets wickets primarily with bouncers. Instead, he uses in-swing, out-swing, yorkers, and slower balls to outthink the batter,” said Bangar.

Adding to this, Deep Dasgupta drew a fascinating comparison, suggesting that Bumrah’s approach resembles that of a spinner, “Would it be fair to say Bumrah is a fast bowler who thinks like a spinner? He’s precise, calculated, and methodical in his approach, much like a spinner who plans every delivery. He’s not the kind of fast bowler who bowls short deliveries to scare batters. His skill lies in outsmarting the batter every time.”

The conversation also turned to Bumrah’s potential leadership qualities. Sanjay Bangar expressed confidence in Bumrah’s leadership abilities, based on his skill and temperament, “Purely based on his skill, without a doubt. Captaincy also depends on the captain-coach relationship and how their wavelengths align. If Bumrah gets the right support, like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had, he could grow into a great leader. He has shown that he has the temperament and intelligence needed to succeed as a captain.”

When asked about any areas for improvement in Bumrah’s game, Sanjay Bangar acknowledged his all-round skills but noted the short ball as one area where he could perhaps improve, “He’s as complete a package as you can get. If I had to point out one area for improvement, it might be his short ball. But overall, Bumrah is a bowler who can do it all. There’s no doubt about his versatility and skill.”

The discussion concluded with Deep Dasgupta praising Bumrah as a generational talent, a bowler whose impact will be felt for years to come, “In many ways, yes. He’s broken stereotypes about red-ball bowling, showing that even yorkers and slower deliveries can be effective. Bumrah is a generational talent, and it will be a long time before we see someone like him again.”

“Needs To Practice…”: Sanjay Manjrekar’s Blunt Take In Criticism Of Ravindra Jadeja https://artifex.news/needs-to-practice-sanjay-manjrekars-blunt-take-in-criticism-of-ravindra-jadeja-7351282/ Sun, 29 Dec 2024 16:33:51 +0000 https://artifex.news/needs-to-practice-sanjay-manjrekars-blunt-take-in-criticism-of-ravindra-jadeja-7351282/ Read More ““Needs To Practice…”: Sanjay Manjrekar’s Blunt Take In Criticism Of Ravindra Jadeja” »

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja‘s ability to play spinners after he got out to Australia’s Nathan Lyon on Day 3 of the 4th Test on Saturday. Jadeja was trapped lbw by Lyon on 13, misreading a delivery which didn’t turn at all. During a discussion on Star Sports, Manjrekar admitted that while Jadeja looked more than comfortable against the pacers, his struggles were evident once Lyon was brought into the attack by captain Pat Cummins.

“He played the fast bowlers a lot and played them very well. He didn’t make even a slight mistake against the fast bowlers. However, once Nathan Lyon came, he was expecting off-spin, that the ball would turn. His bat came for the off-spin and the ball was not turning at all. So he played with that mindset,” Manjrekar said.

Manjrekar suggested Jadeja needs to practice a little more against spinners.

“It seems like Jadeja needs to practice a little more against spin because he is looking absolutely comfortable against seam. He used to play very well against spin earlier but it happens that when you play overseas, you start playing fast bowling well and your focus is slightly removed from spin. If only fast bowlers had been there, Jadeja would have played a big knock,” he added.

Manjrekar’s sentiments were echoed by former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta, who explained that Jadeja failed to read Lyon throughout his innings.

“I felt he was playing for turn from the start but Nathan Lyon read the conditions very well, that there wasn’t that much turn there. Nathan Lyon will get two things here – one is bounce and the second is drift. You should see from where he released the ball and where it finished. He released it from wide of the crease, the pitching was just outside the off-stump, and it pitched and came in. From Nathan Lyon’s first ball, when Jadeja was defending, it was hitting the inside edge of the bat. It tells you that Jadeja’s thinking was opposite to what Nathan Lyon was doing, and that is why Nathan Lyon trapped him,” Dasgupta explained.

For the record, Lyon has dismissed seven times out of 16 innings in Test cricket.

With the Mumbai Indians’ campaign almost done and dusted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, there’s little motivation for players to continue giving their best. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, etc. are all established stars but haven’t been able to lift the Mumbai Indians’ campaign this season. As there remains the threat of their performances going down further, with MI unlikely to qualify for playoffs, former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta feels there’s still ‘pride’ to play for.

Urging Rohit to not take his foot off the gas, Dasgupta urged the veteran opening batter to think of the forthcoming assignments and end the IPL campaign on a high.

“You are playing for the pride of the team, you are playing as a professional cricketer and you are playing for your pride as well. You don’t want to play a game and not want to perform. Everytime you cross the line, you want to do your best,” Dasgupta told Star Sports.

Dasgupta also feels next year’s IPL mega auction could be a key motivating factor for Rohit to do well. With Hardik now leading the franchise, it has been suggested by many that Rohit could decide to leave the franchise after the season.

“Let’s not forget that next year is the big auction. This is the last few opportunities that all the professional cricketers have. Even if the team is not going to qualify, at least to put up a good show and tell everyone, ‘You know what, I am there’,” Dasgupta said.

Dasgupta also feels that it’s important for Rohit to continue performing, keeping in mind his next assignment, which is the T20 World Cup 2024 with the Indian team.

“He is such an integral part of the team since he is the captain, but he sets the tone as well at the top of the order. That’s what he has been doing for the last year and a half,” he added.

Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta was disappointed with the batting of Suryakumar Yadav in Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Bangladesh on Friday. Suryakumar is the number one T20I batter but failed to replicate the dominance in the ODI format. He has played 27 one-dayers for India and managed to score 537 runs at an average of 24.40. While he just stands apart from other batters when one talks about the T20 format, Suryakumar is still trying to find his feet in the 50-over matches at the highest level. The ODI game against Bangladesh on Friday was no different for the right-handed batter.

Suryakumar scored 26 runs off 34 balls against Bangladesh in the spin-friendly track of R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The batter’s struggle against the Bangladesh spin attack was quite evident.

Suryakumar was frequently trying to play sweep shots against the Bangladesh spinners and failed in most of the occasions. He was eventually bowled by Shakib Al Hasan while trying to play the same shot.

“It was very strange for me, because it seemed like that the only shot that he wanted to play was a sweep. I mean we have generally seen him being so good against the spinners, going over extra cover, mid off, he has other options. It was such a strange innings because all he wanted to do was sweep. I can understand that he is struggling. I can understand when you go out there, you connect a few and you feel confident. He was struggling to play that shot and he still went for it anyway,” said Dasgupta on Star Sports after the match.

Shubman Gill‘s fine-tuned 121 and Axar Patel‘s late surge of 42 went in vain as Bangladesh defeated India by 6 runs in the final Super 4 match.

Chasing 266-run target, India were bundled out for 259 in 49.5 overs. Mustafizur Rahman starred with three wickets for Bangladesh.

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan (80) and Tohwid Hridoy (54) slammed half-centuries as Bangladesh posted a total of 265 for 8 in 50 overs. For India, Shardul Thakur picked three wickets after captain Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first.
