India captain Rohit Sharma has suggested that he would’ve dropped Suryakumar Yadav from the team if he had not taken David Miller‘s catch in the T20 World Cup final last week. In the final over of the match, Miller hit a wide full toss from Hardik Pandya but Suryakumar was able to catch the ball inside the ropes at long-off, realised it just as he went over the boundary, and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch. Rohit, Suryakumar, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal were all felicitated by the Maharashtra goverment after Team India’s success at the T20 World Cup.

During the event, Rohit revealed what Suryakumar told him after taking the catch. The India captain joked he would’ve dropped Suryakumar from the team had he not completed the catch.

“Suryakumar Yadav said the ball landed in his hands, it’s good that it did…Otherwise, I would have dropped him from the team,” Rohit joked, leaving Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and other members in splits.

Suryakumar’s catch had sparked a debate on social media with many claiming that the boundary cushion was pushed outside deliberately during the second innings to give the Indian team an unfair advantage.

Several video angles of the catch went viral on social media with many claiming that it was not a fair catch.

However, the allegation was wrong as the boundary cushion was outside the line even during the Indian innings.

It is quite a common way of changing the positions of boundary ropes ahead of the a match, depending on the pitch being selected for a game.

“I am just grateful to be in that moment to do something special for the country…god’s plan it was,” Suryakumar had told PTI about the catch.

Indian cricket team created history in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024 as the Rohit Sharma-led side became the first team to win the competition without losing a single game. India produced a number of brilliant performances and ultimately, they defeated South Africa in a thrilling final to clinch the T20 World Cup trophy after 17 years. While India’s performance was lauded universally, some doubts were raised over Suryakumar Yadav‘s athletic catch to dismiss David Miller in the final over of the match. A number of videos on social media claimed that he actually touched the boundary line with his leg while completing the catch and such claims were even reported in some foreign media outlets. Legendary Indian cricket team batter Sunil Gavaskar was not pleased with the accusation and slammed an Australian paper on making such claims in the aftermath of India’s victory in the competition.

“There was also a question raised in an Australian paper about the fairness of the catch that Suryakumar Yadav took to dismiss David Miller in the final. All the replays were quite clear that SKY had done a marvellous balancing act as he took the catch and flicked the ball up in the air before he crossed the boundary rope and then jumped in the air and caught the ball within the boundary to complete a fabulous catch,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

Gavaskar even went on to say that Australian journalists should look into cheating allegations against their own national team before commenting on other sides in world cricket.

“Nobody questioned the catch, but the writer of the article did. He may be interested to see the video floating around of the 10 most blatant cheating acts done by the Aussies before trying to point a finger at SKY. Pot calling the kettle black indeed,” the legendary India batter added.

South Africa’s explosive batter David Miller cleared the air on his T20I retirement rumours following the devastating loss in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final, saying that he will continue to be available and play for the Proteas. The Proteas’ hopes of winning the inaugural World Cup were crushed when they lost to India in the final by 7 runs. Social media users started making claims that Miller had declared his retirement from the Twenty20 Internationals a few days after the final. However, the left-handed batter rubbished those rumours and confirmed that he has not retired from the format.

“Contrary to some reports, I have NOT retired from T20 International cricket. I will continue to be available to play for the Proteas. The best is yet to come,” Miller wrote in his Instagram story.

Earlier, Miller expressed sadness at his team’s loss to India in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup on Saturday at Barbados, saying that the defeat was a “tough pill to swallow”.

During the last over, Miller, known to deliver clutch, breakthrough and match-winning performances for the Proteas, attempted a big shot when 16 runs were needed from six balls. However, the ball found Suryakumar Yadav near the boundary, who plucked a remarkable catch to turn the match completely in India’s favour with the batters’ dismissal for 21 runs. The Men in Blue captured their second ICC T20 World Cup title with a seven-run win.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Miller wrote, “I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don’t explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit. This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar.”

In nine matches, Miller scored 169 runs in the tournament at an average of 28.16, with a half-century and strike rate of 102.42. His best score was 59*.

Suryakumar Yadav was spot on with his decision-making and awareness while pulling off the game-changing catch in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados, said India’s fielding coach T Dilip. Needing 16 runs from the final over, the dangerous David Miller hit a wide full toss from Hardik Pandya but Suryakumar steadied himself on the ropes, caught the ball, released it just as he went over the boundary ropes and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch.

“When the moment comes, it’s his decision and awareness of rope, that’s very important, and knowing with confidence that he can throw and come back, it’s a decision making at that time, and he got on to that,” Dilip told PTI Video while speaking about the catch.

Dilip, who had started the innovative practice of awarding medals for best fielding performance at training, said the young and experienced players “gel well” and called it one of the best things of this Indian team.

“I must give credit to the players for taking time out to come for even optional practice despite such a tight schedule. They themselves take responsibility and come for optional practice.

“Second, we all come through a system, like India A, NCA… One great thing about this squad is that there is a combination of experienced players and a combination of youth, and they really gel well together,” Dilip said after the team’s title triumph on Saturday.

Dilip is the best example of someone who has risen through the ranks, coaching in a state cricket academy’s junior age-group programme, serving as an assistant fielding coach in the now defunct IPL side Deccan Chargers while also spending a decade at the National Cricket Academy.

He has put in the hard yards since being appointed to the post and it reflected in the India’s efforts on the field.

He said it is difficult to track the white ball while taking high catches during daytime matches.

“Especially under clear sky, it becomes really difficult, and for that too we say that track the ball so that you get that much anchor point. So, if there is cloud, floodlights, then it becomes easier to track. But, definitely, it’s still not easy to track, especially for players from the sub-continent,” Dilip said.

Since 2012, Dilip has worked at various ZCA (Zonal Cricket Academy) and NCA age-group camps. He has worked with the likes of Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal during his NCA days and hence, there is a familiarity with the younger group of cricketers in the national set-up.

As far as the senior players are concerned, his good work didn’t go unnoticed by erstwhile NCA director and outgoing India head coach Rahul Dravid, who ensured that Dilip got regular India A assignments, which would also help him develop training modules for elite cricketers.

The T20 World Cup 2024 final turned out to be an epic contest between two unbeaten teams, as India and South Africa produced one of the most tightly-fought finals in the history of the game. South Africa looked to have sealed the win, with 30 runs needed from 30 balls, when Suryakumar Yadav produced a terrific ‘clutch moment’, bagging an incredible boundary-rope catch on a shot hit by David Miller to tilt the game in India’s favour. The game was truly called match-defining but some fans feel Surya’s foot had touched the rope while completing the catch.

The decision was referred to the third-umpire who looked at multiple angles to confirm if Surya took a clean catch. The decision went in the favour of the Indian team and there was little that South Africa could do from that position, with only the tailenders left to chase the remaining total.

However, fresh videos have emerged on social media, claiming the Proteas should’ve been awarded a six on that incident.

“He would have already taken 50 catches like that in the practice…The awareness of the rope is very important and having the confidence that he can throw it and catch it. It was a decision-making moment at that point of time…,” India’s fielding coach T Dilip said on Suryakumar’s catch after the game.

Had the hit from Miller been a little more clean, it could’ve crossed the boundary comfortably. Considering that India secured the win by just 7 runs, such an affair would’ve changed the complexion of the game completely.

First it was Heinrich Klaasen and then David Miller, the explosive Proteas duo’s wickets were crucial to India managing to defend the total of 176 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav produced a moment of absolute brilliance in the final over of the final to clinch the T20 World Cup 2024 title for India with a thrilling win over South Africa on Saturday. India needed to defend 16 runs in the final over but South Africa still had the explosive David Miller out in the middle. On the first ball of the over, Hardik Pandya bowled a full-toss just outside off-stump and Miller was quick to heave it straight down the ground. It looked like the ball was going to sail over the boundary rope but Surya appeared out of nowhere to catch it. However, his momentum took him over the boundary rope but he was ready for it as he lobbed it back, steadied himself and came back to complete a sensational effort.

The catch proved to be crucial in the context of the match as India went on to win the game by 7 runs and clinch their first T20 World Cup title in 17 years. It was an emotional moment for a side that was defeated in the ODI World Cup 2023 final less than a year ago on home soil.

“It means a lot. Very emotional, we’ve been working very hard and something was not clicking. But today we got what the whole nation wanted. More special for me, how my last 6 months were, I haven’t spoken a word. I knew that if I kept working hard I could shine and do what I could do.”

“Getting an opportunity like this makes it more special. We always believed, it was just about executing our plans and staying calm and letting the pressure come to them. Credit to Jassi (Bumrah) and the other bowlers for those last 5 overs. Knew it would not help me if I wasn’t calm, wanted to commit 100% to every ball I’ve bowled. I’ve always enjoyed pressure.”

“Very happy for him (Dravid), he’s been a wonderful man, really enjoyed working with him, to give him a farewell like this is wonderful, have had a very good relationship with him and became friends. Very happy for all the support staff,” Hardik said after the match.

The finalists of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 have been decided and for the first time ever, an unbeaten team will lift the title when India lock horns with South Africa on June 29. And this time, it’s Bridgetown’s Kensington Oval that will host the first daytime T20 World Cup Final. This will also be the first time South Africa will be competing in the Men’s World Cup Final. Apart from winning the inaugural Champions Trophy Final in 1998, South Africa have never made the final of any Men’s ICC tournament and needless to say, Aiden Markram and his team will be keen to etch their name in history.

Ahead of a must-win contest for both sides on Saturday, let’s discuss how the Proteas can tackle the Asian giants to clinch their maiden World Cup title.

Is South Africa prepared for high-flying India in the final?

Win toss, bat first

With bowling being their strong suit, South Africa should prefer bowling second in the final. In the four day matches played at the Kensington Oval, the team winning the toss has decided twice to bat first in the tournament.

Overall in this tournament, India have batted first five times out of their seven matches and have won them all. Tactically, Aiden Markram’s men should opt to bat first after winning the toss in the final. Even if India bat first, South Africa have enough firepower in their bowling to remove the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early in the innings.

Go slow to Suryakumar

India’s middle order has been making the difference in most of their wins and with Suryakumar Yadav in the middle, it’s always a challenge for any opposition bowling unit.

Surya – the world’s No.1 T20I batter – loves using any pace and bounce on offer to go behind the wicket which is prominently known as ‘Supla Shot’. The unorthodox shots behind the stumps have brought out the best of Suryakumar against South African pacers.

Interestingly, pacers have found success against him with their slower balls – a reminder of how Suryakumar struggled against slow bouncers in the ODI World Cup 2023 Final.

The Proteas’ pacers need to be wary about any chinks in Suryakumar’s armour and try different variations consistently against him.

Maharaj in the powerplay can work

Indian opening duo Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have always enjoyed facing pace early in the innings. South Africa, generally, have opened the proceedings with pacers Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada.

After their loss to India in the semis, skipper Jos Buttler admitted his tactical mistake of not going with spinner Moeen Ali in the powerplay. Bearing this in mind, South Africa should try out a couple of overs from Keshav Maharaj inside the first six overs. Traditionally, both Rohit and Kohli have tended to score slowly against left-arm spin.

South Africa play spin better

South African batters tend to play spin better compared to the other SENA countries. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller have been South Africa’s best players of spin while the likes of Quinton de Kock and skipper Markram still have a decent hold on spinners.

But can they withstand the collective pressure that the Indian spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja could bring from both ends? Yes, they can. With a clear head, the Protea batters must use the depth of their crease to attack the Indian spinners and keep their run rate healthy.

When it’s do or die opposition doesn’t matter

South Africa have always been on the receiving end of defeat in World Cup knockouts and this is the first time they have made a World Cup Final. Interestingly, they have come close on many occasions, reaching the semis in five ODI World Cups (1992, 1999, 2003, 2015, and 2023).

And in T20 World Cups, they have made two semi-final appearances (2004 and 2014) before this year. As the stars seemingly align for South Africa in 2024, it will be up to their men on the field to ensure that the Proteas create history by clinching their first-ever World Cup trophy.

South Africa will face India in the Final of the prestigious ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29 at 8:00 PM IST. The most-awaited clash will be hosted at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. South Africa are yet to add the coveted silverware to their trophy cabinet while India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup 2007 played in Johannesburg.

T20 World Cup 2024 Final

As we reach the climax of the ninth edition, it is worth noting that both teams South Africa and India, have remained unbeaten in the tournament so far.

The Aiden Markram-led team broke the jinx of SA’s knockout games vs Afghanistan in Trinidad in a Semi-Final clash to feature in the Final on June 29. While Rohit Sharma’s men overcame the ghosts of Adelaide 2022 to beat England and inch closer to the 2024 trophy.

Key player battles ahead of the SA vs IND Final

As we head into the adrenaline-filled day of T20 cricket, here are some interesting player battles to keep an eye on:

1. Virat Kohli vs Kagiso Rabada

Virat Kohli is the highest run-getter in T20 World Cups with 1,216 runs in 34 games. However, Kohli’s recent form says otherwise. In seven matches of the ongoing tournament, the top-order batter has managed only 75 runs with a top score of 37. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada has been one of their go-to bowlers for much-needed dismissals. In eight games, the right-arm pacer has taken 12 wickets.

Kohli has faced Rabada in six T20Is and has fallen prey to him once at a decent average of 7.5. While the chase master has scored only 15 runs out of 16 balls faced. In the upcoming clash, Rabada’s form will be crucial for his team’s success in the power play.

2. Rohit Sharma vs Keshav Maharaj

In this tournament, Rohit Sharma has led India’s batting from the front with 248 runs in seven games. His three half-centuries with a top score of 92 highlights his blazing form. Keshav Maharaj, a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, has performed decently with nine wickets in seven matches and can trouble the Indian skipper on the spin-friendly pitch at Kensington Oval.

Furthermore, what makes this face-off interesting is that in their only T20I encounter, the Proteas talent has dismissed Rohit while giving only just 11 runs.

3. Quinton de Kock vs Arshdeep Singh

The only South African batter to cross 200 runs in this tournament is Quinton de Kock with 204 runs in eight outings. On the opposite side, Arshdeep Singh, a young pacer, has climbed up the ranks for the Men in Blue with 15 wickets in seven appearances. His best T20I spell of 4/9 was recorded against the USA earlier this month.

Predominantly, Arshdeep has enjoyed bowling against de Kock in T20Is as the left-arm pacer has dismissed him twice at an average of six while conceding only 12 runs at a strike rate of 100.

4. David Miller vs Hardik Pandya

With 148 runs in seven innings in the T20 World Cup 2024, David Miller has provided crucial support in the middle order. India’s Hardik Pandya has also made his presence felt with his all-round abilities. With the ball, Pandya has scalped eight wickets in seven matches.

In a twist of fate, Miller and Pandya have shared the dressing room while playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2022 and 2023. In the T20I setup, Pandya has got Miller’s wicket thrice out of six match-ups while Miller has managed 31 runs in 27 balls faced. It’ll be interesting to see how the two players battle it out as rivals on one of cricket’s biggest occasions.

5. Suryakumar Yadav vs Tabraiz Shamsi

After scoring 196 runs in seven games, Suryakumar Yadav is on the list of the top 10 run-getters in this edition of the World Cup. The right-handed batter also has two fifties to his credit. Tabraiz Shamsi, South Africa’s experienced left-arm wrist spinner has also made a difference with 11 wickets in just four games.

In their three T20I face-offs, both players are placed evenly. Suryakumar has plundered the left-arm spinner at a strike rate of 121.43 while Shamsi has removed Suryakumar once. With three boundaries and a maximum, the Indian batter has scored 34 runs in 28 balls against Shamsi.
