July 16, 2023. 5th set, the score at 5 games to 4 in favor of Alcaraz, with the championship point on the way, there was a sudden rush in the air. Perhaps, the tennis fraternity knew a revolution was afoot. Fast-forward to July 14, 2024, the revolution is well and truly established. 21-year-old powerhouse Carlos Alcaraz etches his name in history, becoming a part of the elite group of players to win back-to-back Wimbledon titles. One of the names on that illustrious list was on the opposite side of the final result. And to quote the great Novak Djokovic on Carlos Alcaraz, “Boy, you never give up.”

Alcaraz’s rise to the top of the tennis world has truly been fascinating. At just 21, the Spaniard already has 4 Grand Slam wins, becoming the youngest to ever do so. And similar to another great Spaniard before him, Alcaraz’s dominance stretches across grass, clay and glass. And to consider the stature of players he has beaten on the way to the titles puts into perspective just how good he has been.

With Roger Federer, it was his technical mastery. Rafael Nadal had the pace and power. Djokovic has the relentless drive. Yet somehow, Alcaraz feels like a culmination of them all. Extremely composed placement on the line. That never-say-die attitude. No room for complacency, even for a single point. This is what sets Alcaraz apart from the rest. And of course, the icing on the cake is his smiling mug at the end of every single one of his wins.

Alcaraz has risen to the top of the game. But that doesn’t mean his fellow youngsters are going to make it easy for him to stay there. Over the last 5 years, we have seen the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Matteo Berrettini rise to the top and compete with the best of the best. Alcaraz, however, is the youngest of the crop, and already probably the best all-round. But it is fair to the say the stage is set for some fiery tennis in the coming years.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Daniil Medvedev 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the men’s singles semifinal of the Wimbledon 2024 to enter the title-decider on Friday. Alcaraz had a nervy beginning, losing the first set to the Russian Medvedev by a narrow margin before truly getting into his game to win the next three sets. The Spaniard, who is the World No. 3 at the moment, would look to retain the Wimbledon title he won last year.

With his progression to the final, Alcaraz registered a giant feat to his name. Since the ATP rankings were first published in 1973, the Spanish ace has become the youngest player to achieve ATP top five wins on all three courts — grass, clay and hard — in consecutive seasons (2023-24).

In the final, Alcaraz will face either seven-time champion Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti for the title on Sunday.

In the semi-final, twice Medvedev led with breaks in the first set only to be pinned back by Alcaraz.

Such was his frustration that he was handed a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct by umpire Eva Asderaki for an apparent foul-mouthed reaction to a ball called for bouncing twice as he was broken in the ninth game.

The tournament referee was even summoned to Centre Court by Asderaki, but Medvedev shrugged off the incident to sweep through the tie-break and take the opening set in which he committed only eight unforced errors to the Spaniard’s 15.

It was the third time at this year’s Wimbledon that Alcaraz had dropped the first set.

Alcaraz recovered impressively, breaking Medvedev for a 3-1 lead in the second having come out on top in the previous game on the back of a 27-shot rally.

The 21-year-old then hit 14 winners in the third set, pocketing the only break in the third game.

Medvedev, who had knocked out world number one Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals, retrieved a break early in the fourth set.

But Alcaraz kept up his assault, edging ahead again for 4-3 on his way to victory.

After leading Team India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title, skipper Rohit Sharma has switched to vacation mode with his family in London. Team India defeated South Africa in the summit clash by seven runs and ended their 11-year-old ICC title drought. After clinching the title, Rohit, star batter Virat Kohli, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements from T20 cricket. The India skipper is having a great time in London and he was also spotted watching the Wimbledon men’s singles semi-final match.

Rohit was spotted during the first men’s singles semi-final match between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev.

The second semi-final of men’s singles Wimbledon will be played between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti.

Earlier, former India cricketer and National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman stated that Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja will continue to contribute in the longer format after they brought down the curtain on their T20I careers.

“My message to these three stalwarts of the game, you know, Virat, Rohit, and I consider Ravindra Jadeja also an extremely talented player who has contributed immensely to the development of the Indian and the progress of the Indian cricket team. A big congratulations. Thank you for all the contribution they’ve given to this great game and set an example for the youngsters to follow and the passion, the pride with which they played the game is exemplary,” Laxman said in a video posted by BCCI on X.

“So while they’ve retired from this format, I’m sure that they will continue to prepare the way they did so far in their career and continue to bring laurels to the country. So big congratulations for excellent T20I career, but I’m sure that they’re going to contribute in the longer version of the game and the 50-year format of the game,” Laxman added.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz shrugged off the loss of the first set to beat Tommy Paul on Tuesday and set up a repeat Wimbledon semi-final with Daniil Medvedev. The Spanish world number three, seeking a fourth Grand Slam title, beat his 12th-seeded opponent 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 under the No. 1 Court roof. Alcaraz was slow out of the blocks, broken twice by the in-form American in a 72-minute first set. Paul raced into a two-game lead in the second set as Alcaraz again faltered on serve but the Spaniard got back on level terms and broke again to level the match.

Three breaks in the third set put the world number three in charge and he stepped up another gear in the fourth set, winning 92 percent of first-serve points and making just four unforced errors.

Alcaraz, seeking to become just the sixth man to capture the French Open and Wimbledon titles back to back, said it had been a tough start to his quarter-final against the recent champion at Queen’s.

“If I’m struggling a little bit to find the solutions, if the opponent is playing great tennis and I don’t get him in trouble, I believe at the end that I’ll be able to come back and be able to find solutions,” he said.

Looking forward to his match against Russian fifth-seed Medvedev, whom he beat last year on his way to winning his first Wimbledon title, he said: “Hopefully I’m going to get the same result.

“He just won against Jannik Sinner, the best player right now, so I know that he’s in really good shape so I have to play my best, I have to believe in myself and try to keep going if I want to beat him.”

Daniil Medvedev defeated world number one Jannik Sinner in five sets on Tuesday to reach a second successive Wimbledon semi-final, subduing the gallant challenge of the Italian, who suffered a worrying mid-match health scare. The fifth-ranked Medvedev triumphed 6-7 (7/9), 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3 to avenge his Australian Open final loss to Sinner in January. His four-hour victory also ended a five-match losing streak against the Italian as Medvedev reached his ninth Grand Slam semi-final. The 28-year-old former US Open winner will face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul of the United States for a place in Sunday’s final. In a tight first set in which neither man gave up a break point, Medvedev edged ahead in the tie-break on the back of a lung-busting 33-shot rally.

However, he squandered a set point and his game suddenly fell apart, serving up a double fault as Sinner pocketed the opener.

The mercurial Russian carved out the only break of the second set in the third game on his way to levelling the quarter-final.

Sinner slipped another break down at 2-1 in the third set and immediately summoned the tournament physio.

The Italian, appearing distressed, had his blood pressure taken courtside before he left for a medical time-out.

After a 10-minute delay, the 22-year-old resumed play and thrilled the Centre Court crowd when he bravely clawed his way back to 5-5.

He then wasted two set points which allowed Medvedev to sweep through the tie-break.

However, the Italian was undaunted and levelled the quarter-final on the back of breaks in the third and fifth games of the fourth set.

But it was Medvedev finished the fresher of the two players, breaking in the final set on his way to victory.

Carlos Alcaraz raced into the Wimbledon third round on Wednesday to set up a mouth-watering duel with fellow crowd-pleaser Frances Tiafoe as Japanese superstar Naomi Osaka returned to Centre Court for the first time in five years. Alcaraz defeated Australia’s world number 69 Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 6-2 on the back of 42 winners. The third-seeded Spaniard’s only moments of concern came in the first set when he let slip a 5-2 lead and found himself 5-6 down with Vukic serving for the opener.

However, the three-time major winner steadied the ship to race away to victory against a player who got the better of him in qualifying at the 2020 French Open.

Alcaraz next faces Tiafoe, the American player he defeated in five sets in the semi-finals of the 2022 US Open on his way to his first Grand Slam triumph.

“I’m going for him,” said Alcaraz, who is bidding to become just the sixth man after Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles back to back.

“I’m ready to play a really high level of tennis and hopefully take him.”

Tiafoe made the third round by seeing off Borna Coric in straight sets.

‘Love and hate’

Eccentric Fabio Fognini of Italy needed a clutch of match points to knock out eighth-seeded Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3.

The 37-year-old Fognini, sporting bleach-blond hair, twice served for the match from 5-2 up in the third set before sealing victory over the three-time Grand Slam runner-up in the fourth set.

“It just shows why I love and hate this sport,” said Fognini.

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, came back from dropping the first set and facing two set points in the second to see off Alexandre Muller of France 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 7-5.

World number two and US Open champion Coco Gauff cruised into the third round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni.

“I’m happy with the way I played, could have been cleaner on some points,” said Gauff, who broke her 19-year-old opponent five times.

The American, who made her career breakthrough at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old qualifier in 2019, goes on to face British qualifier Sonay Kartal, the world number 298.

The last time four-time major winner Osaka appeared on Centre Court was in 2019 when she was second seed but was dumped out in the first round by Yulia Putintseva.

Five years on, she is ranked at 113 having only returned to the tour in January after giving birth to daughter Shai in July last year.

All-Italian fight

Osaka’s win over Diane Parry in the first round was her first at Wimbledon since 2018.

The Japanese star takes on America’s 17th-ranked Emma Navarro, who arrived in London on the back of a semi-final run at the Bad Homburg grass-court tournament.

Later Wednesday, world number one Jannik Sinner will take on Italian compatriot and former runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

Italian men’s tennis has rarely been stronger, with the country boasting five players in the top 50 while the nation swept to Davis Cup glory last season.

Ten Italian men started the singles tournament this year at Wimbledon.

Sinner was the first Italian man to capture a Grand Slam title with his victory at the Australian Open in January and was also the first from his country to become world number one.

“I feel like in Italy we have so many tournaments, starting with juniors, then the Futures and Challengers,” said 22-year-old Sinner.

“We have big, big ATP tournaments there. We have good facilities and great coaches.”

Berrettini can boast his own breakthrough Italian moment when he was the first to make a Wimbledon men’s final in 2021.

Sinner made the semi-finals at the All England Club last year where he was defeated by Djokovic.

There could be a memorable day for Chinese tennis with teenager Shang Juncheng taking on 10th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov and 32nd seed Zhang Zhizhen facing Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

Until Monday, no Chinese man had won a match at Wimbledon in the Open era.

Italy’s Jannik Sinner destroyed defending champion Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 in just 69 minutes on Friday to reach the final of the ATP Miami Open, where he will take on Grigor Dimitrov. Bulgarian Dimitrov made his third Masters 1000 series final after he beat fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4. Sinner will be the favorite against world number 12 Dimitrov, after his display of power and skill at Hard Rock Stadium swept away Medvedev. The Italian had lost to the Russian in the Miami final last year but rallied from two sets down to beat him in the Australian Open final in January.

The outcome was never in doubt this time as Sinner utterly dominated from the outset.

Sinner broke Medvedev’s first service game to go 2-0 up in the opening set, pinning the Russian in the corner at the end of a long rally before blasting a winner past him.

While the 22-year-old looked fresh and fired up, blasting with power from the baseline and inventive when he came to the net, Medvedev was struggling to just hold his serve and the Italian broke again in the fourth game, taking advantage of his fourth break point.

A rattled-looking Medvedev finally held in the sixth game, but Sinner served out to love to complete a first-set rout in just 33 minutes.

It was the same story in the second set, Sinner breaking to love to start. The Russian looked dejected after he went wide on a break point to fall to 4-1 down, one of a series of unusually poorly executed shots from the 28-year-old.

Sinner met little resistance on his way to serving out for the match and acknowledged that his emphatic win was helped by the out of sorts nature of his opponent’s play.

“I felt great on court today. Usually the more you go on in a tournament, the more comfortable you feel and I’m very happy about today’s performance,” he said.

“I think Daniil didn’t feel this well today. He made a lot of mistakes which he usually doesn’t make, so I just took the chance. I was expecting a really tough match.”

Different player, different person

Sinner has won five straight matches against Medvedev after having lost their first six encounters.

Sinner, who enjoyed a run of 19 wins before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final at Indian Wells, said he is now a very different proposition than when he missed out in the Miami final last year.

“I’m a different player, a different person,” he said.

Medvedev was blunt in his assessment of his performance.

“He played good. I didn’t play well enough. We could speak for hours but in the end I didn’t play good enough, he played good, he won easy. That’s the end of the story, to be honest,” he said.

But he said Sinner had clearly accelerated his improvement over the past year.

“He misses less, he chooses his shots more wisely. He serves 10 times better. You know, Jannik was always serving well, but now he serves like big, big.

“I wonder actually how he made it, because serve is not that easy a shot to work on, and now he’s, yeah, his serve is a big improvement for him”

The second semi-final was a much tighter affair which was decided by a handful of key moments.

Dimitrov, who ousted world number two Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, broke when 5-4 up in the first set, Zverev mis-timing a return which ballooned out of court to hand the advantage to the Bulgarian.

The big-serving German was solid throughout the second set and while he wobbled at 6-2 up in the tie-break he held on to win 7-4 and force a deciding set.

With Dimitrov always busy, frequently going to the net, Zverev was relying on his baseline play to get him through.

But he was broken in the seventh game when Dimitrov came towards the net, slipped but somehow managed an overhead volley while almost on the floor to win break point.

The Bulgarian was buzzing with energy as he saw out the set and said his improvised winner had shown his mentality.

“I was not letting any balls pass through me…I just thought, OK, I’m seeing the ball, I am going to scramble for it.

“It was a dogfight on both ends, we really went at each other after that first set,” he said.

World number three Jannik Sinner moved into the semi-finals of the Miami Open in emphatic style on Wednesday, beating Czech Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2. Italian Sinner, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year, will play in his fourth semi of the season after dealing with lively Machac in 91 minutes. Sinner broke the opening game serve from the Czech but Machac responded immediately to make it 1-1. The crowd were on their feet to appreciate some brilliant defensive play from Sinner who eventually took charge of the set, breaking to go 4-3 up and then closing out.

The second set was more straightforward with Sinner breaking in the third game and never looking back.

Despite the comfortable margin of the win, Sinner said Machac deserved praise for his energetic and aggressive performance.

“He has an incredible talent. He is super fast, also physically he is in great shape,” said the world number three.

“I didn’t know exactly what to expect today. The first games I was looking a little bit at what kind of tactics could work or not,” he added.

“I played good, especially in the important moments of the match, which makes it… the scoreboard, you see the score, but it’s sometimes lying. Today was a little bit like that,” said Sinner.

The 22-year-old will next face the winner of Wednesday’s other quarter-final between defending champion Daniil Medvedev and Chile’s Nicolas Jarry.

World number two Carlos Alcaraz cruised home in a 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 victory over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday to win a second straight Indian Wells ATP title, both coming at the Russian’s expense. Alcaraz captured his first title since Wimbledon last July and became the first repeat winner at Indian Wells since Novak Djokovic won three straight titles from 2014-16. For the 20-year-old Spaniard, 12 days in the California desert proved just what he needed after a stuttering start to the season, which included a quarter-final exit at the Australian Open and an ankle injury that forced him out of his opening match at Rio de Janeiro in February.

“A lot of doubts for me,” he said of his mindset coming in amidst his longest title drought since he burst through for his first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open.

For Alcaraz, however, it wasn’t just about ending the drought, it was about rediscovering his joy in the game.

“It means a lot to me, lifting this trophy, winning this tournament, because I overcome a lot of problems in my head, a lot of problems physically,” he said.

“Not that I didn’t win a tournament since Wimbledon. For me, it doesn’t matter, It’s about the feelings … It’s about enjoying playing tennis, once I step on the court, putting my game. It’s what only matters.

“That’s why I’m really, really happy to lift this trophy, because I found myself at this tournament.”

As he did last year, Alcaraz denied Medvedev’s bid to capture the only one of the ATP’s six hardcourt Masters 1000 titles he has yet to win.

More importantly, after a week in which he ended Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner’s 19-match winning streak, Alcaraz was looking forward with renewed confidence to next week’s hardcourt tournament in Miami and beyond.

“Obviously winning tournaments helps a lot coming to the next ones,” said Alcaraz, whose tournament included not only a semi-final victory over red-hot Sinner but also a brush with a swarm of bees in his quarter-final win over Alexander Zverev — the man who ousted him in Melbourne.

“Obviously winning a Masters 1000 again — it is a really difficult tournament to win — gives you extra motivation to keep going, extra, extra confidence for Miami right now and for what’s next,” said Alcaraz, who joined compatriot Rafael Nadal as the only players to win five Masters 1000 titles before turning 21.

Extra motivation

World number four Medvedev, who was hindered by an ankle injury in their 2023 title clash, got off to a hot start in this one, parlaying a service break into a 3-0 first-set lead.

But Alcaraz produced a blazing forehand passing shot to break Medvedev in the fifth game and from there they duelled to the tie-breaker with entertaining rallies spiced by drop shots, volleys and lobs.

Alcaraz had fans out of their seats in one rally, when he started to let a lob go by but, seeing it was heading in, managed to reach it and salvage the point.

“I’m trying to do that kind of points,” Alcaraz said. “It gives me extra motivation.”

Trailing 5-2 in the tie-breaker, Australian Open runner-up Medvedev battled back to 5-5, but Alcaraz claimed the set when the Russian sent a forehand wide and from there he was in complete control.

“He managed in the first set at one moment to raise his level,” Medvedev said. “I kind of managed to be there and to try to catch his level, but I was just a little bit down.

“In the end, this down was going down, down, down, and he was going up, up, up.

“So the result is a fair result for the match that it was. But I’m happy,” Medvedev added. “Last time I managed to (reach the final in Indian Wells) I won Miami — so that’s what I’m going to try to do.”

Daniil Medvedev raced to victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday to reach the Dubai semi-finals and continue his excellent start to the year. The world number four wasted little time in wrapping up a 6-2, 6-3 win and will face either Hubert Hurkacz or Ugo Humbert in the last four. “Alejandro can play very well,” Medvedev said. “Sometimes during matches he can have a little down moment and then he goes up. “I knew that no matter the score, I needed to go until the last point.”

The Russian is playing in just his second tournament of the season after reaching the Australian Open final, where he suffered an agonising defeat by Jannik Sinner after leading by two sets.

Reigning champion Medvedev is bidding to defend an ATP title for the first time, having won 20 trophies at Tour-level events in his career but all at different tournaments.

Medvedev eased through the opening set with breaks in the sixth and eighth games.

He powered into a 4-0 lead in the second and sealed victory on his first match point, despite a brief rally from Davidovich Fokina, who has now lost all four of his meetings with Medvedev.

Medvedev had to come from a set down against Lorenzo Sonego in the previous round, but said he may have been struggling with an illness.

“I don’t know what happened yesterday. A few people around me got a small virus, so maybe it is this,” he said.

“Some days that happens but I am happy today happened. I am not at my best shape yet but we have some more matches.”

Alexander Bublik and Andrey Rublev will meet in the other semi-final after both were beneficiaries of retirements in their last-eight matches.

Kazakhstan’s Bublik led 6-4, 4-1 when his opponent Jiri Lehecka quit their tie with injury.

Second seed Rublev was 6-4, 4-3 ahead when American Sebastian Korda left the court in the second quarter-final.

The win ended a run of three successive quarter-final exits for world number five Rublev.
