Nitish Kumar’s absence against Kolkata Knight Riders forced the Sunrisers Hyderabad into an unsuccessful middle-order reshuffle. However, Daniel Vettori’s side is set for a timely boost with the return of the all-rounder, who appeared in fine touch during Tuesday’s training session.

“Every team has that player who makes selection quite straightforward. Against KKR, we picked Smaran as we needed a batter and then had to manoeuvre around for another seamer. Nitish, much like a Marco Jansen or Marcus Stoinis, offers balance and makes my life a lot easier,” Vettori said ahead of SRH’s clash against the Punjab Kings.

Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain announced themselves in emphatic fashion on their Sunrisers Hyderabad debuts, picking up four wickets each against Rajasthan Royals and easing long-standing concerns around the team’s bowling.

While the 24-year-old Praful dismantled the RR top-order with three wickets in the first over, Sakib’s composed effort ensured that the pressure never relented. Together, they provided the sharpness with the ball that Sunrisers had long been searching for.

Head coach Daniel Vettori, while encouraged by the performance, suggested that adjustments could still be made based on conditions.

In a trade-off between explosiveness and consistency, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori clearly prefers the former.

He understands that T20 batting is all about taking calculated risks, which, as the phrase suggests, is fraught with risk.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori on Wednesday heaped praise on Ishan Kishan for doing the captain’s job well in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins, who is yet to attain full fitness.

Vettori underlined that Kishan led by example with a 38-ball 80 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). “We’re fortunate enough that Cummins has been around the group, and he has been able to have conversations with Kishan about his style and how he wants to go about it. And Ishan’s been highly successful in his captaincy career so far,” said Vettori ahead of SRH’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens here.

“Ishan Kishan loves leadership and it can have a real positive effect on his batting and keeping. As he gets to understand the group and the dynamics, he’s going to put his mark on it, and he will be a very effective leader for us.”

Vettori also complimented Kishan’s batsmanship against all sorts of bowlers. “His ability to hit both sides of the pitch, hit behind, and then deal with the full ball aggressively means he puts pressure back on that bowler straight away. There’s no style of bowling that he’s ineffective against…When he walks out to the crease, he has got the confidence and an understanding of his game that he can take it on.”

Having lost to RCB even after scoring a 200-plus total, Vettori said their bowlers needed to be as perfect as possible against KKR.

Australia assistant coach Daniel Vettori admitted that a resilient partnership between Indian tailenders Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep foiled their plans to enforce a follow-on, while also defending the decision not to declare the home team’s first innings in the third Test which seems heading towards a draw. With the Indian batters, barring KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, failing once again, it was the obstinate 39-run unbeaten partnership between Bumrah and Akash Deep that saved India the blushes as the tourists avoided a follow on a rain marred day four on Tuesday. “I think the only way to force the game was to force the follow-on,” Vettori said at the post-day press conference.

“There was a desperation to get that final wicket. We thought we had a really good chance when Jadeja was dismissed, but it was a real fighting partnership from Bumrah and Deep.

“Unfortunately, just the amount of time that’s been lost from the game has made it difficult,” he added.

Akash Deep, making his debut in Australia, walked in to bat at 213 for 9, with India still needing 33 runs to avoid the follow-on that could have cost them the game. Alongside pace spearhead Bumrah, he guided India to 252 for 9, frustrating the home team.

Australia had ended day three on 405 for 7 but chose to bat, consuming a considerable amount of game time on a rain affected day four rather than declare their innings.

Asked if declaring was on the table, Vettori said, “No, I think we always acknowledge that first innings runs are going to be vitally important in this game.

“You don’t really want to plan for weather, because we’ve seen on these days where it can blow past, and you can get on with things, and then it can settle in.

“So I think the conversation was mainly around, let’s make the most of this first innings, trust a very good bowling unit to be able to deliver on this wicket like they did today.” Australia were handed a major blow as pacer Josh Hazlewood sustained a calf injury, ruling him out of the rest of the match.

Vettori said losing one of the best bowlers in the world did affect Australia’s game plan, but the rain breaks helped the pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins without any additional burden.

“Weather allowed us to operate in terms of breaks with Mitch and Patty able to come back on multiple occasions. If it had been full 90 overs, it would have been a lot tougher to manage. We always have the luxury to bowl Nathan (Lyon). So that alleviated a little bit of the concern.

“Because of the breaks, it didn’t feel like we pushed them too hard, and it was a tricky situation at the end there where the ball was incredibly soft and getting wet, but to try and push them just that little bit longer to try and get that last wicket.

“Probably that’s the only time where we felt they were slightly extended, but so far it feels like the norm,” he added.

Australia are set to lose a crucial member of their staff midway during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori – currently the assistant coach of Australia – is expected to leave the Australia dressing room in order to attend the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, which clashes with the Test match days. This is because Vettori is also the head coach of IPL 2024 runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and would need to be present in order to aid their team-building in the vital mega auction.

The IPL 2025 mega auction is on November 24 and 25, colliding directly with the duration of the first Australia-India Test in Perth, which is scheduled to run from November 22 to 26.

Not only Vettori but also Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer are expected to leave their commentary roles with Australian-based Channel Seven midway through the Perth Test, in order to attend the mega auction with their respective franchises, as per a report by The Age. Ponting is head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS), while Langer is head coach of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The IPL is now one of the richest and most-watched leagues in sport worldwide, and holds enormous sporting and commercial importance, forcing the likes of Vettori to consider skipping even a Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in order to attend the IPL auction.

Vettori’s Sunrisers already have two Australia Test stalwarts retained, in Pat Cummins and Travis Head, along with Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy. SRH will head into the auction with a purse of INR 45 crore.

As a player, Vettori played 113 Tests and 295 ODIs for Australia’s Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand, but joined Australia’s coaching staff in May 2022.

More than a year later, in August 2023, Vettori was also appointed the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, and guided them to the runners-up spot in IPL 2024.

“No One Has Done It”: New Zealand Great Ross Taylor On 3-0 Series Whitewash vs India https://artifex.news/test-series-clean-sweep-against-india-greatest-ever-achievement-for-nz-vettroi-taylor-6943172/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 16:00:22 +0000 https://artifex.news/test-series-clean-sweep-against-india-greatest-ever-achievement-for-nz-vettroi-taylor-6943172/ Read More ““No One Has Done It”: New Zealand Great Ross Taylor On 3-0 Series Whitewash vs India” »

Former captain Daniel Vettori termed New Zealand’s 3-0 Test series win on Indian soil as his country’s greatest achievement while ex-batter Ross Taylor said he did not think of a clean sweep even “in our wildest dreams”. India suffered a humiliating series whitewash after losing the third match by 25 runs to New Zealand in Mumbai on Sunday, the first time in their Test history, which goes back to 1933. New Zealand had come to India after being thrashed 0-2 by a Sri Lankan team that is in transition. The Black Caps were also without their biggest batting star, Kane Williamson, thanks to injury.

“The expectation for any touring team that goes to India on these types of wickets is that it’s going to be incredibly difficult. We understand the challenge and in a lot of ways it’s just how are you going to compete against them.

“… given the history with two Test match wins in almost 80 years and a lot of trying. You have to go back to the great Sir Richard Hadlee’s era, and he could only get one win,” Vettori, a spin great, was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

“So for this team to come here and get that first one and then to win a series is probably New Zealand cricket’s greatest.” Taylor, a former batting star, is in awe of the New Zealand team after the historic Test series sweep in India.

“I think the way they played throughout the whole series … I think we hoped more than thought we were going to win. But a clean sweep – think it still hasn’t quite sunk in among the New Zealand public, probably for the players as well.

“After winning the first Test (in Bengaluru), it gave the team as well as the public some belief, but I don’t think even in our wildest dreams we imagined a clean sweep and such a convincing performance from Tom (Latham), Gary and the boys.

“This has to be the greatest New Zealand series win in Test cricket. No one has done it. South Africa have won a two-match series 2-0, but 3-0 in India, I don’t think anyone could see this at the start. So this surpasses the 2-1 Test victory in the ’80s against Australia.” Asked how New Zealand pulled off the amazing feat, Taylor said, “Obviously, you come to India after being completely outplayed in Sri Lanka, probably only the players in that dressing room and the support staff gave themselves a chance … But a New Zealand team that’s got their backs against the wall is a pretty dangerous side.

“You need a little bit of luck as well. Bengaluru was a good toss to lose. And then winning the toss in the next two Tests (in Pune and Mumbai) after New Zealand knew they are likely to play on turners after India went down in the first Test was significant.” For former express pacer Shane Bond too, it was not difficult to acknowledge it as the best result ever result for New Zealand in Test cricket.

“No other team has come and done what New Zealand have. When you talk to all the teams about touring India, it almost seems like mission impossible. Even the great Australian team came there and couldn’t win.

“So for NZ to have won 3-0, I know they’ve made World Cup finals and would have loved to have won an ODI World Cup, but I think in terms of red-ball cricket, alongside the WTC (title win), this is far and away the best series result ever.

“I don’t think anyone, anywhere, especially at home, thought we could win this series, let alone a 3-0 sweep.”

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori feels that after mastering the art of setting totals, it’s time his team brushes up on its chasing abilities as the business end of the Indian Premier League approaches. SRH are currently third in the leaderboard with five wins from eight games. Of the five victories, four have come batting first. “We have been successful setting totals and now we have to look at how well we are in chasing,” Vettori said after the 35-run loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru here on Thursday night.

RCB posted a challenging 206 for 7 after opting to bat and then restricted SRH to 171 for 8.

For a team that has breached the 250-run mark thrice this season, the target was easily gettable but a rare failure of the top and middle-order cost the hosts dearly.

“Obviously, disappointing one where we have come from in the last four games; we played some really good cricket and even though we lost, you could see if we had some wickets at the back end, we could have still chased it down,” Vettori said at the post-match press conference.

“Those early wickets broke everything. We were confident for the scores we were being able to put up. We though that 206 was a good score, we probably let a few runs in the field. But there was confidence in the group because of past performances.

“We also knew it was being set up by the openers and how good they have played, and today they had an off day and that’s cricket,” he said.

The former New Zealand cricketer said there are no easy games in IPL.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the support through the middle stages. It’s a tough loss but we understand every team in the IPL can beat every team. There are no easy games at all,” Vettori said.

The coach was of the view that the role of an anchor has no significance in high-scoring matches.

“I think the wicket was still pretty good. The guys who came off said that it is a surface where you can score on. Anchor role when you are chasing 207 it is hard to come, you obviously need to be aggressive. For some to sit along and play anchor role is a little bit tricky.” RCB all-rounder Swapnil Singh, meanwhile, was relieved after his side snapped its six-match losing streak.

“Experience was good but we won the game that was more important. When you win a game, the tempo in the team changes. It feels good. Last two games we missed by small difference but still long way to go,” he said.

Swapnil said they felt the target was enough on this wicket despite SRH boasting of a super-aggressive batting order.

“The ball was stopping. Our main aim was to spin the ball and bowl slower as a fast bowler. It helped, we knew that they will come hard at us and obviously they did.

“Yes, we felt so because the wicket was stopping when we were batting as well and dew was not there,” he said.
