Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn lauded Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach and said his aggression and game awareness on the field will be beneficial for the Men in Blue. BCCI announced Gambhir as head coach of the Indian team after the departure of Rahul Dravid. India clinched the T20 World Cup title to end the 11-year-long ICC trophy drought in his last assignment. “I’m a big fan of Gautam Gambhir. I love his aggression. He’s one of the few Indians I ever played against who came back at you, and I like that. I think he’s going to take that into the dressing room with guys like Virat and some of the other senior players who might not play as big a part anymore. I’m not too sure,” Steyn told Star Sports.

“Not just in India, but in world cricket, we need guys who are a little bit more aggressive and play the game a little bit harder. We all seem to play in the leagues against each other, and we become quite friendly and friends. I like the way that he’s fierce on the field but a gentleman off the field. He’s also streetwise, a very smart cricketer, and has a great cricket brain. So I think from that point of view, he’s going to be fantastic for them too,” he added.

Former Proteas all-rounder Jacques Kallis also remains confident in Gambhir’s ability to excel in the job with his aggressive nature.

“It’s great to see Gautam getting into the coaching side of things. He’s got a really good cricket brain. He’ll bring some fire and loves playing the game aggressively. I think he’ll bring that added touch, and the guys will certainly learn a lot from him. He’s got a lot to add and will bring significant value to that Indian side. I wish him all the best—not too much against us, but I’m sure he’ll do a fantastic job,” Kallis said.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi added, “I think it’s a big opportunity, and we need to see how he makes the most of it. I have seen his interviews, and he talks positively and is very straightforward.”

Gambhir will join the Indian side for the Sri Lanka tour, where India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against Sri Lanka, starting on July 27.

Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn are all too familiar with the heartbreak of being a South African at ICC events, and as the Proteas broke the jinx by entering their maiden T20 World Cup final, both men felt emotionally overwhelmed. South Africa handed a nine-wicket thrashing to Afghanistan in the semifinals in Tarouba, Trinidad to make the final after seven semifinal disappointments of the past. “We are in the finals. Couldn’t be happier for @AidzMarkaram and the team, one more to go,” wrote former skipper Smith on his X account, tagging current captain Aiden Markram.

Steyn, the premier fast bowler of his time, was as delighted to see his country in the showpiece’s final, and lauded the pace bowlers for producing a brilliant effort to bowl out the Afghans for a feeble 56.

“It’s emotional down here. We’re into a final. Proteas with the bit between their teeth! “It’s been destructive poetry in motion. Beautiful to watch,” Steyn scribbled on his X handle.

The South African government too congratulated the team for achieving a historic feat.

“Congratulations @ProteasMenCSA on reaching the finals in the T20 World Cup for the first time beating Afghanistan by 9 wickets.” The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) also lauded the rivals for reaching the title clash, even though they were crestfallen by the result in the semifinals.

“Not exactly the ending we hoped for in this T20 World Cup. But hats off to #AfghanAtalan for an unforgettable performance throughout the event.

“Congratulations to @ProteasMenCSA for securing their first-ever final berth in World Cup cricket.”

South Africa and World Cup semifinals used to be a sporting tragedy of Shakepearean proportions. Not anymore. Shedding the unwanted tag of perennial “chokers” the Proteas marched into their maiden T20 World Cup final unbeaten in Tarouba, Trinidad, comfortably beating tournament giant-slayers Afghanistan. The triumph wiped off years of heartache and the trauma of being labelled under-performers despite having some of international cricket’s biggest names in the line-up. Let’s take a look at the Proteas’ tormented past when they failed to get over the line at key junctures in global events.

1992 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia

Not quite a choke but just bad luck. Emerging after 22 years of exile following the end of apartheid in the country, South Agrica had everything going for them, their lightening quick bowlers were excelling, their fielders affected sensational run-outs.

However, in the semifinal, rain came and the equation went from a reasonably gettable 22 off 7 balls, gettable to 22 off just one bacll, thanks to a miscommunication on their revised target.

1996 ODI World Cup quarterfinal vs West Indies

Having won all their group games, Hansie Cronje and his men started firm favourites against West Indies in the quarterfinal. But Brian Lara played an absolute blinder while spinners Roger Harper and Jimmy Adams spun a web to inflict a 19-run defeat on the Proteas.

1999 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia

Perhaps the most devastating game in South Africa’s cricketing history. The semifinal at Edgbaston that turned tournament’s best player Lance Klusener into the World Cup’s biggest tragic hero.

Chasing a modest 214, South Africa needed nine off the final over with the final pair at the crease. Klusener smashed the first two balls for fours to level the scores but Allan Donald was run out and the game was tied.

Australia went through to the final as they had won the previous game between the teams in the super sixes stage.

2007 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia

South Africa’s decision to bat first backfired dramatically as a revered line-up, including the likes of Graeme Smith, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher, was shot out for 149. Australia finished the game off with nearly 20 overs to spare

2009 T20 World Cup semifinal vs Pakistan

The Proteas had defeated New Zealand, England, West Indies and India to reach the last four stage high on confidence. But a miserly spell by Shahid Afridi stopped them as they failed to chase a reasonably decent 150.

2011 ODI World Cup quarterfinal vs New Zealand

A line up boasting of AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy failed to chase down a small target of 222 against New Zealand. At 108 for 3 in the 25 overs, South Africa looked set to cruise to victory but then lost next seven wickets for 64 runs.

2013 Champions Trophy semifinal vs England

South Africa were reeling at 8/80 before David Miller and Rory Kleinveldt inflated the total to 175. But Jonathan Trott smashed an unbeaten 82 and England won by seven wickets with more than 12 overs spare.

“I think we did choke in the game. You’ve got to accept that’s what it is. It’s definitely a dark mist that hangs over South African cricket in knockout events,” coach Gary Kirsten had said after the game.

2014 T20 World Cup semifinal vs India

South Africa’s semifinal curse continued as they failed to get over the line in another crunch match. This time against a clinical Indian unit.

2015 ODI World Cup semifinal vs New Zealand

The tide didn’t turn for the Proteas. A golden generation of South Africa cricketers, at their peak, had all bases covered. But were knocked out by New Zealand again in the semifinals stage giving yet another heartbreak.

2022 T20 World Cup Super 12 vs the Netherlands

A solitary win away from the semifinals, South Africa choked, suffering a 13-run shock defeat at the hands of a spirited Netherlands side.

2023 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia

The Proteas galloped through the league stage, even inflicting a massive 134-run defeat on Australia. But when it came to the crucial last four game, South Africa meekly surrendered to the men from Down Under in the semifinals, for their fifth semifinal exit in 50-over World Cups.

South Africa cricket legend Dale Steyn left a few surprised as he named his four semi-finalists for the T20 World Cup 2024. Steyn, who is an avid follower of the game and also a personality that doesn’t shy away from expressing his opinions. With the Super 8s stage already active, the T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies has entered an intriguing stage. In a video shared on Instagram, the South Africa pace icon left out the England cricket team as he named the four teams he thinks would qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals.

Steyn picked India, South Africa, West Indies and Australia as his four semi-finalists. To the surprise of many, Steyn left out the England team, a side that didn’t just win the last edition of the T20 World Cup, in 2022 but also defeated West Indies in their most recent Super 8 clash.

England Hammered West Indies in T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8s:

Opening batter Phil Salt thrashed a brilliant 87 not out off just 47 balls as defending champions England romped to an eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in their T20 World Cup Super Eight clash.

Salt smashed seven fours and five sixes during a swashbuckling innings at the Daren Sammy National Stadium in St. Lucia while Jonny Bairstow hit an unbeaten 48 as England finished on 181-2 off 17.3 overs after earlier restricting the West Indies to 180-4.

Player of the Match Salt effectively sealed victory after cutting loose in the 16th over, hammering 30 runs off West Indies bowler Romario Shepherd with an exhibition of power-hitting that included three sixes and three fours.

The win marked an emphatic return to form for England, who laboured through the first round group phase and flirted with elimination at one stage.

Earlier, a disciplined English bowling performance had held the West Indies to a relatively modest total of 180 in the Group 2 clash of two-time T20 champions.

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma has established himself as one of the biggest stars of the modern game and during the course of his illustrious career, he has faced a plethora of legendary fast bowlers and spinners. Rohit was recently asked to pick the bowler that gave him ‘nightmares’ and the veteran batter was quick to come up with an answer. Rohit said that although he did not get any nightmares, legendary South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn was a fierce competitor. Rohit further stated that he watched more than 100 videos before he went out to bat against the celebrated pacer.

“Not nightmares but I have gone and watched his videos like 100 times before I went in to bat. That was Dale Steyn. He is an absolute legend of the game. And what he has achieved in his career is just superb to watch. And I have faced him many times. He is quick. He used to swing the ball at that pace, which is not easy. It is quite tough. And he was a fierce competitor. He just went out there wanting to do everything, to win every game and every session, so it was nice to come up against him. Not that I had much success against him, but I enjoyed my battles,” Rohit said in an interaction with Dubai Eye 103.8.

This is not the first time that Rohit praised Steyn as back in 2020, he was asked a similar question and he took Steyn’s name as one of the bowlers he liked during the start of his career.

“When I came into the side, the fastest bowler in the world used to be Brett Lee. In my debut ODI series, I went to Ireland to face South Africa, and Dale Steyn was pretty quick then as well. When I started playing, I really liked Lee and Steyn, I had difficulties in facing them as well,” Rohit told Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami during an Instagram Live session.

“From the current lot, Rabada is a good bowler, I really like Josh Hazelwood as well, he bowls with great discipline,” he added.

Rovman Powell was trapped LBW on the last ball with RR needing two runs vs SRH.© X (Twitter)

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) stole a win from the jaws of defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday, edging out Rajasthan Royals (RR) by a solitary run. With two needed off the last ball in a 202-run chase, Rovman Powell failed to connect with Bhuvneshwar Kumar‘s low full toss and was trapped LBW. While Powell quickly took a review, the decision was upheld later by the TV umpire. However, even if the West Indies all-rounder had managed to had been successful with his review, it would not have changed the outcome of the match.

For the unversed, as per ICC’s playing conditions, the Appendix D rule suggests that the ball becomes dead once the umpire has signalled out.

“If following a Player Review request, an original decision of ‘Out’ is changed to ‘Not Out’, then the ball is still deemed to have become dead when the original decision was made. The batting side, while benefiting from the reversal of the dismissal, shall not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued from the delivery had the on-field umpire originally,” the law suggests.

While RR would’ve still lost the match had Powell’s review had been successful, fans were left wondering the outcome of the match had he been given not out.

Sharing his views on the same, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn took a leaf out of baseball‘s rule book to eradicate confusion in such scenarios.

“We need to basically play in baseball style. Consider the ball not dead until play has come to a stop. So essentially, run if you’re the batting team and continue to field if you’re the bowling team. Then we address the LBW or caught off no-ball etc after. Out if out, runs awarded if LBW or caught was not out,” Steyn wrote in a post on X.

On the disappointing loss to SRH, RR captain Sanju Samson said after the game: “Knowing the nature of the IPL, you never win the game until you actually win the game.”

At times where teams are constantly scoring over 200 runs in T20 cricket, becoming a successful bowler has become incredibly difficult. The likes of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders have arguably put the finest batting performances of the season, putting up scores well above the 200-run mark. Seeing another such outing by SRH in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Delhi Capitals, South Africa legend said that if there was a time he would want to be a bowler, it’s today.

Though the past few weeks have been demoralizing for quite a few bowlers, owing to the stunning batting displays by batters in the IPL, Steyn asserted that a good bowler would be considered as ‘God’ in today’s times.

“I could make a joke and say I’m glad I’m retired and no longer bowling, but… It’s always a good time to be a bowler, if you can make yourself the best, you’ll be a wanted god among mere mortals. The slayer of rampaging runs! Insensitive’s have never been higher. I’d wana be a bowler more than anything!”, he posed on X (formerly Twitter).

A fan, reacting to Steyn’s post, said,”Just shorten it and say, “Be a Jasprit Bumrah!””. The South Africa legend had no hesitation in admitting that Bumrah is one such bowler who is dominating proceedings despite the equation tilting overwhelmingly in favour of batters.

“Well, exactly that,” Steyn replied to the fan.

Bumrah is the purple cap holder at present, picking up 13 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 12.84 and an economy rate of 5.96. In times where bowlers are regularly conceding runs at over 10 per over, Bumrah continues to remain mean when it comes to leaking runs.

Mumbai Indians suffered their 5th defeat in 8 matches as Rajasthan Royals solidified their position at the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 points table on Monday. RR’s opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal roared back to form with a terrific hundred after Sandeep Sharma’s maiden five-for as a Hardik Pandya’s side took another step towards elimination from the T20 league. Despite the defeat, Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya refused to dig into the problems that exist in team, especially his own form. After the conclusion of the match South Africa legend Dale Steyn seemed to have taken a thinly veiled dig at Hardik, though the retired pacer refused to name the MI skipper.

Hardik has been one of the most talked-about cricketers in the IPL since the start of the tournament. His poor form, both with the bat and the ball, is one of the reasons behind MI’s underwhelming performance in the IPL. Against Rajasthan, Hardik was poor in the field too, letting down his bowlers.

Steyn, who played for multiple franchises in the IPL, wasn’t happy seeing words like ‘trusting the process’, ‘sticking to basics’ being used. Seeing the MI skipper opt for a ‘safe’ approach in the post-match presentation ceremony, Steyn seems to have shared a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter).

“I really look forward to the day players might say what’s honestly on their mind. Instead, we some how dumbed ourselves and our minds into saying the usual safe thing, lose the next game, smile and then repeat that nonsense again,” he posted.

After the game, Hardik blamed the team’s finishing as the reason behind the defeat, saying MI were about 10-15 runs short against RR.

“We put ourselves in trouble early on. The way Tilak and Nehal batted – that was fantastic. I don’t think that when we lost a couple of wickets early we thought we would even reach 180. We didn’t finish well and that’s why we were 10-15 runs short. We had to keep it within the stumps (while bowling). Early on in the powerplay, we gave a lot of width and I don’t think it was our best day in the field as well.

“Overall, we did not put the right foot on the park and eventually they outplayed us. After the game, it’s not the right time to go to the players, everyone is professional, they know their roles. What we can do is learn from this game and the mistakes which we have made, rectify it and make sure that we don’t make it. Progression is very important.

“Within the team, individually, we will have to accept our flaws and maybe work on those. I don’t believe much in chip and chop, I like to back players and the focus would always be to play good cricket, sticking to our plans and making sure that we don’t make the basic errors. Cricket is simple, as long as we keep it simple, it’s nice,” he said.

As for the match, pacer Sandeep Sharma bagged the player of the match award for his figures of 4-0-18-5 to record the best bowling figures this IPL. Jaiswal, on the other hand, soared back to formin Rajasthan’s final home game, thrashing the Mumbai Indians bowlers during his 104 not out off 60 balls.

Despite a rain intervention delaying the proceedings, Rajasthan found little troubles in overhauling a 180-run target set by Mumbai Indians, reaching 183/1 in 18.4 overs.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) unearthed a new gem as young pace sensation Mayank Yadav delivered a fiery performance in Lucknow Super Giants’ win against Punjab Kings on Saturday. Mayank bowled at express pace, over 150 kmph, on a regular basis, clinching player of the match performance in LSG’s victory. After his memorable show against Punjab, the 21-year-old speedster spoke about the bowlers that have inspired him over the years. Surprisingly, there was only one name that Mayank took and it was that of former South Africa sensation Dale Steyn.

“I look up to only one fast bowler, Dale Steyn. He is my idol. I idolize him a lot,” Mayank said after the match.

It isn’t just fast bowling that Mayank is fascinated with. The youngster also likes jets, planes, superbikes, and rockets.

“Speed thrills and excites me, even in general life. Things like rockets, planes, and superbikes excite me. In my childhood, I used to like jets, so you can say I get my inspiration from there,” he said.

The youngster could’ve featured in the IPL last year too but an injury prevented that from happening.

“Injuries are part of fast bowlers’ life. Last season also, I also missed playing in the IPL because of an injury.”

As pointed out by the broadcasters, here are the bowling speeds per delivery (in kmph) of Mayank’s unbelievable spell of 3/27 in 10 overs, in which he dismissed Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma to swing the tides in Lucknow’s favour following a century partnership between Bairstow and skipper Shikhar Dhawan in a 200-run chase. He took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

1st over:147, 146, 150, 141, 149, 147 (in kmph)
2nd over:156, 150, 142, 144 (wicket), 153, 149
3rd over:152, 150, 147 (wicket), 146, 144, 143
4th over:153, 154, 149, 142 (wicket), 152, 148

During his spell of 24 balls, Mayank crossed the 150 kmph mark nine times. His first ball of the second over, measured at 155.8 to be precise, is among the fastest deliveries in IPL history and is the fastest of IPL 2024. The fastest delivery in IPL history was bowled by Australia’s Shaun Tait, who touched the 157.7 kmph mark for the Rajasthan Royals against the Delhi Capitals back in 2011.

MI made a huge call to trade Hardik Pandya and appointing him as captain.© X (Twitter)

Mumbai Indians (MI)’s controversial move to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain has been the talk of town in the lead up to the new Indian Premier League (IPL) season. MI made a huge call to trade Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans, before naming the all-rounder as the captain of the franchise. The decision came as a huge shock to many as the franchise won five titles under Rohit’s leadership. Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn feels that the move to replace Rohit with Hardik could prove to be a challenging one for the team.

“I think it will be challenging – the whole dynamics of leaving Mumbai and then coming back to Mumbai. I hope they had some sort of a camp a month before the IPL. So, anything that’s bothering anyone kind of gets ironed out before the first game,” the former RCB pacer told news agency PTI.

However, Steyn expects everyone, including Rohit and Hardik, to deal the matter with professionalism.

“You’ve got big personalities, guys who have done the decision-making before and now in a different role. It might be that little needle that we might not be able to see or hear on TV. But, these international cricketers know how to put aside their ego, and I think Mumbai will be just fine,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hardik promised MI fans that they will try to play a brand of cricket that everyone will be proud of.

“The feeling of wearing this colour is very special for me. The journey started here, coming back home and playing is always going to be special. We will make sure we will play a brand of cricket which all will be proud of and at the same point of time it’s going to be a ride no one will forget,” Pandya said in a video posted by MI.

Hardik returns to MI after playing two seasons for GT, leading the franchise to their maiden IPL title in their debut season in the league back in 2022.

Last season, he guided them to a second place finish as GT lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final.
