Chennai Super Kings’ head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that Ruturaj Gaikwad is still a work in progress as captain after the side’s playoff hopes in the ongoing IPL were left massively dented by a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai.

CSK suffered a five-wicket defeat to SRH on Monday (May 18, 2026), leaving their playoff hopes dependent on a complex set of mathematical possibilities.

They now face a must-win final league game against Gujarat Titans on Thursday (May 21), while depending on other results to fall in their favour. SRH, on the other hand, sealed their playoff berth on Tuesday night.

“Ruturaj will be going through that (transition) as part of his development. It’s a big transition from having one of the best captains (in MS Dhoni) at cricket scene running the franchise for such a long time to a new captain,” Fleming said of 29-year-old Gaikwad, who has been CSK skipper for three seasons.

“So it’s going to take a little bit of time. And he’s doing a good job. He has a massive amount of respect with this group of players. And he’s learning all the time and putting that into play.

“So going forward, I have no doubt he’ll be a fine captain for this franchise,” added the New Zealander.

Gaikwad is averaging a modest 29 this season, managing only two half centuries in the 13 matches so far.

Fleming said the season has not been kind to the team, conceding that it was already a step behind other sides due to the changes made over the past year.

CSK overhauled their squad following a disappointing 2025 season, releasing mainstays such as Matheesha Pathirana, Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway, while bringing in young, attacking talent, including Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, and Urvil Patel.

Rajasthan Royals’ Sanju Samson was brought in to strengthen the top order, a move that necessitated parting ways with stalwart Ravindra Jadeja and overseas all-rounder Sam Curran.

“Yeah, it’s been a challenge, we knew coming into the season we were a little bit behind in terms of other teams. We had made a lot of changes halfway through the first year of the cycle and then we made more changes going into this year.

“It would have been great to have started well, but we started poorly…and we just haven’t been accurate enough.” Fleming, however, said he was pleased that the team had fought back after a poor start to the season.

“And then I was really proud of the recovery… to get back into the mix was really satisfying. There’s some good performances from players, these young players that have emerged.” He said the team’s rebuilding and change in strategy were also affected by injuries to several players, which halted the momentum.

“There was a style of cricket that we were developing that was working. But we had injuries to key players, which sort of stopped a bit of momentum and made us a little bit unsettled in terms of having to keep changing the team.

“Our performances under pressure in the last couple of games just haven’t been quite up to it. If we’d been a little bit more accurate, a little bit more positive, then things could have been different.

Fleming said that the presence of Dhoni in the dugout, despite him not featuring in a single game while recovering from a lingering calf strain, has been a source of motivation.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk about it (when Dhoni will play), but MS has been around a lot this year, which has been really important for the team, for a lot of young players in continuity. So he’s been a big part. He hasn’t played, but he’s still had a big influence on the team.”

Speaking about his future after another underwhelming season, the long-standing CSK coach said it was for the management to decide.

“There’s a lot of good things we’ve done. We’ve introduced some new players that will be hopefully generation players for CSK, but I know we’re judged on results. So, that’s a management call. Not mine.”

Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach Varun Aaron hailed Heinrich Klaasen as the fulcrum of the team’s batting unit on the eve of his side’s clash against Chennai Super Kings.

On Monday (May 18, 2026), Klaasen reinforced that claim with a fine knock on a tricky surface to help his side beat Super Kings by five wickets in a vital IPL 2026 encounter at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

While Ishan Kishan headlined the chase with a measured half-century (70, 47b, 7×4, 3×6), it was Klaasen’s 26-ball 47 (6×4, 2×6) that changed the course of the game.

Sunrisers’ second win over CSK this season ensured it booked a place in the playoffs and, in the process, also dragged Gujarat Titans along into the climactic phase. The result also meant Super Kings were staring at elimination.

Chasing 181, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma failed to get Sunrisers off to their usual flying start and they were in a spot of bother at 56 for two in the eighth over.

Klaasen, though, quickly went about picking apart the Super Kings bowling attack with surgical precision. Having been dropped on 18 by Spencer Johnson off Noor Ahmad, the South African piled on the agony for CSK, immediately hitting the Afghan spinner for a six and four and collected two more boundaries off Shivam Dube.

Klassen’s knock allowed Kishan to grow in confidence at the other end. The left-hander then took on Anshul Kamboj in a 16-run 13th over. Once Klaasen departed, Kishan took charge and got his side to within striking distance before being dismissed.

Earlier, cameos from Dewald Brevis (44, 27b, 2×4, 4×6) and Kartik Sharma (32, 19b, 3×4, 2×6) helped Chennai Super Kings huff and puff its way to 180 for seven.

The Sunrisers pacers led by skipper Pat Cummins were on the money in taking pace off their deliveries and bowling into the surface that was on the slower side.

The Australian was at his metronomic best, returning figures of 4-0-28-3 and was well-supported by Sakib Hussain (two for 34) and Eshan Malinga (one for 26).

From 100 for four, Brevis helped CSK recover to a respectable total. However, in the end, it wasn’t enough as Ruturaj Gaikwad’s men ended their final home game on a sour note.

In 2021, after guiding Chennai Super Kings to a fourth IPL title, M.S. Dhoni, speaking at a celebration event in the city, remarked, “Hopefully, my last T20 will be in Chennai. Whether it’s next year or in five years, we don’t really know.”

Two years later, in 2023, after lifting the IPL trophy for a record-equalling fifth time in Ahmedabad, Dhoni, while acknowledging it would be good to go out on a high, felt he had to work hard to come back and say thank you to the fans.

Though the last two years haven’t gone to script for CSK, Dhoni featured in all games. However, so far this year, the former skipper has yet to take the field as he nurses a calf injury. While he has been a constant feature during practice sessions at Chepauk, he has not been travelling for most away fixtures and hasn’t been at the ground on match days.

Now, on the eve of CSK’s final home match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, speculation over whether Dhoni will answer the fans’ prayers by striding onto the field for the first time this campaign has reached fever pitch.

On Sunday, the 44-year-old batted for nearly 30 minutes. He faced the net bowlers and took some throwdowns. The focus was on power-hitting, even occasionally stepping down to hit the spinners.

Compared to previous match-eve sessions in Chennai, when he preferred to take mostly throwdowns, Dhoni faced off against bowlers for a sustained period on Sunday.

Could it be an indication that fans could finally see their beloved in action, and, more importantly, that it could be the last dance?

When Chennai Super Kings set foot at the MAC Stadium for one last time this IPL season to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Monday (May 18, 2026), there will be heightened expectations for more than one reason.

Even as CSK looks to maximise its home advantage in a must-win encounter, there is curiosity over whether M.S. Dhoni will take the centre stage at the ‘Den’ for the first time in IPL 2026. Having earned six victories, Super Kings need to win the final two matches and hope a few other results go their way to keep playoff hopes alive.

The five-time champion comes into the fixture on the back of a crushing seven-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Friday (May 15, 2026). The Super Kings, however, won’t dwell much on the defeat.

It was a rare off day for a bowling attack that has otherwise punched above its weight and been key to the side’s success so far. In the batting department, Shivam Dube got some much-needed runs in Lucknow, and his form should bolster the middle-order.

CSK may have to revisit its strategy of using three left-arm seamers — as it deployed against LSG — which makes the bowling attack one-dimensional. Whether the team brings in Akeal Hosein, considering Sunrisers’ marauding left-handed top three of Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Ishan Kishan, remains to be seen.

The Hyderabad outfit heads into the game following an 82-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans, in which it was bowled out for 86 on a pace-friendly pitch in Ahmedabad. CSK will hope to take some cues from that game and might pray for a surface that grips enough to unsettle the SRH batters.

Given the contrasting approaches of the teams, the stage is set for an exciting southern contest. Can Ruturaj Gaikwad’s men sign off in style at their backyard?

It’s a lot of pressure to have 30,000-plus fans pinning their hopes on you to close out a tight game. More so after you’ve made an imperious first impression with a four-fer on debut. On Saturday, 24-year-old Praful Hinge held his nerve to hand Sunrisers Hyderabad a 10-run win against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

A blistering half-century from Abhishek Sharma (59, 22b, 6×4, 4×6) and Heinrich Klaasen’s 59 (39b, 6×4, 2×6) lifted SRH to 194 for nine, its highest total against the Super Kings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has endured a difficult start to the IPL season, managing just 63 runs, averaging 12.60 with three single-digit scores in five outings.

His partner Sanju Samson suffered similar returns before a sublime unbeaten hundred at Chepauk turned the tide.

Ayush Mhatre at No. 3, meanwhile, has effortlessly accumulated 171 runs, including two fifties, at an average of 34.20, striking at 170 in the PowerPlay. The youngster had successfully stepped into an injured Ruturaj’s shoes last season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad might have missed out on a well-deserved second consecutive ton, but the Chennai Super Kings skipper regaled the sell-out crowd with a scintillating 98 (54b, 10×4, 3×6) to set up a commanding 78-run win for his side over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Sunday.

The skipper was well supported by Daryl Mitchell (52, 32b, 7×4, 1×6), who finally found form as they combined to forge a 107-run stand for the second wicket. Later, Shivam Dube (39 n.o., 20b, 1×4, 4×6) gave the innings the final flourish as the Super Kings posted 212 for three.

In reply, Sunrisers’ chase stuttered from the beginning with Tushar Deshpande’s triple strike (three for 23) in the PowerPlay. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma picked two sixes off his first three balls off the pacer, but Deshpande came back strongly to remove Head and Anmolpreet Singh off successive deliveries. In the next over, the he dismissed Abhishek, caught by Mitchell at deep-point, to rattle the visitors.

During the middle overs, Ravindra Jadeja dried up the runs with a miserly spell (one for 22). When Matheesha Pathirana pegged Aiden Markram’s middle-stump back with a searing yorker in the 11th over, SRH slumped to 85 for five from which it could never recover and was bowled out for 134.

Showing the way

Earlier, Ruturaj’s majestic knock set CSK on course for an imposing total after it was asked to bat first on a slow pitch.

Whether giving himself room to smash left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed inside-out, or slicing Bhuvneshwar Kumar behind point, or sending a copybook cover drive to the ropes, Ruturaj easily peppered the off-side fence.

At the other end, Mitchell slowly found his bearings and struck to his strength of going down the ground, with success — the best shot being a lofted six off Cummins over long-off as he got his maiden half-century.

Even as Ruturaj was tiring as he neared his century, Dube took the baton from his captain and smashed T. Natarajan for a couple of sixes to get going. The duo added 74 for the third wicket to power CSK past 200, which proved more than enough.
