Bayern Munich have signed French forward Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, the German giants announced on Sunday. German magazine Kicker reported Bayern paid a release clause of 70 million euros ($75 million) to the Premier League club to secure Olise’s services on a five-year deal. Olise, 22, completed a medical in the Bavarian capital on Sunday. “It’s a great challenge, and that’s exactly what I was looking for,” Olise said. “I want to prove myself at this level and play my part in ensuring that we win as many titles as possible with our team in the coming years.”

Born in London, Olise has represented France’s youth teams and will play for Les Bleus under coach Thierry Henry at the Paris Olympics in August.

Olise scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 19 Premier League games last season for the London club.

He is Bayern’s second major arrival of the summer after Japan defender Hiroki Ito who arrived from Stuttgart.

Bayern finished third behind champions Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart last season, breaking a streak of 11 straight Bundesliga titles.

Other than England captain Harry Kane, who scored 36 goals in 32 Bundesliga games, Bayern struggled for goals last season, with only Jamal Musiala (10 goals) reaching double figures.

“We want new impetus in our team, new energy, new ideas -– that’s what players like Michael Olise stand for,” Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said in a statement.

“We’re very much looking forward to having him here. He will enrich our game.”

Bayern are also reportedly close to finalising a deal for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, while Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah and RB Leipzig forward Xavi Simons are also on their shopping list.

Sunny Singh Gill Set To Become First Referee Of Indian Descent In Premier League https://artifex.news/sunny-singh-gill-set-to-become-first-referee-of-indian-descent-in-premier-league-5205938/ Sat, 09 Mar 2024 11:03:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/sunny-singh-gill-set-to-become-first-referee-of-indian-descent-in-premier-league-5205938/ Read More “Sunny Singh Gill Set To Become First Referee Of Indian Descent In Premier League” »

Sunny Singh Gill was standing at the proverbial career crossroads one year ago. He had the option to continue as a prison officer or concentrate on carrying forward his family’s rich footballing legacy by chasing his refereeing dream. Cut to 2024, the 39-year-old will script history at Selhurst Park on Saturday when he becomes the first Indian-origin and British South Asian to referee in an English Premier League fixture (Crystal Palace vs Luton). “This weekend I’ll be proud to see Sunny Singh Gill taking to the pitch as the first South Asian to referee a Premier League match,” said British PM Rishi Sunak, addressing an awards ceremony organised by the Asian Media Group (AMG) earlier this week.

“It is a reminder of the incredible contribution of South Asian people to our economy and our society. It’s a reminder too of the values we share: hard work, family, education and enterprise. There is so much for us to celebrate,” he said.

It will not be the first time that a member of the trailblazing Gill family claims a slice of history though. Sunny’s father Jarnail Singh was the first turbaned referee in the history of English League football (EFL). He officiated 150 matches between 2004 and 2010.

“Football has always run in the family,” Sunny said.

His brother Bhupinder was the first Sikh-Punjabi to serve as a Premier League assistant referee when he ran the line during the Southampton versus Nottingham Forest game last year.

“Me and my brother grew up loving the game and like most young kids, we just wanted to play but in our household, it was a bit different because when we were going to primary school, we knew our dad was going out to referee on a weekend,” he told EFL last year.

“There were times he was a fourth official in the Premier League and our friends would say they saw him on Match of the Day!” But it was not refereeing that he dreamed of as a child. Like umpteen children in Britain, Sunny too aspired to play football professionally.

“I remember when I was nine years old we went to watch Arsenal play Everton, that was our first Premier League game,” Sunny said.

“Dermot Gallager was the referee and dad was the fourth official. At that age you don’t really think about being a referee.

“I remember looking around Highbury and watching Ian Wright for Arsenal thinking, ‘wow, this is what I want’.

“We took a picture on the pitch underneath the goalposts and all I thought about was how amazing it would be to score a goal there, not give a penalty there or something!” He was scouted by Queens Park Rangers but was released soon after the trials at the club’s youth academy. But his passion for football remained intact.

It wasn’t until watching his father referee a game between Wolves and Burnley in front of 35,000 fans that Sunny understood what his calling was.

“After watching him walk out of the tunnel that day that’s when I thought, ‘yeah, I want to be a referee’. I was a little bit older and more realistic and I knew what it was like to go through that matchday routine as a referee.” At 17, Sunny took charge of his first Sunday League. But the teenager found it difficult to handle footballers on the field and went on a five-year hiatus from officiating.

“I got put off it. Part of it was because I wanted to play football with my friends, but also I was only 17 and refereeing was hard.

“Players behave in a certain way, I was young, perhaps a little bit immature and I didn’t have the man-management skills to cope with that.” An encouraging chat with his father put him back on the path of refereeing.

In April 2021, Sunny (fourth official)and Bhupinder (assistant) became the first pair of British South Asians to officiate in the same Championship match and in November last year, he became the first South Asian since his father to referee a Championship game.

Alongside officiating in the EFL, Sunny also worked at Feltham Prison and Young Offender Institution. Fatigued, he eventually gave up the latter to focus on training as a referee.

“It was tough, doing full-time shift work during the week then going off officiating at the weekends, you have to think how it will affect your life but I knew it was what I wanted to do.

“I asked my family to just stick with me because I knew it would be worthwhile one day when I could have a professional career in football and I did.” It hasn’t been an easy journey for Sunny who now wants to realise his dream Premier League dream and scale greater heights.

“It’s been a lot of hard work training away from the pitch, improving in every department with the help of the PGMOL and my coaches.

“I now want to set more goals and fulfill my dream of becoming the first South Asian to referee in the Premier League.”

Darwin Nunez headed in a 99th-minute winner as injury-hit Liverpool moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham came from behind late on to beat Crystal Palace on Saturday. Liverpool’s resources have been stretched to the limit by injuries in recent weeks as they attempt to win a quadruple in Jurgen Klopp’s final season. The Reds were again without a host of star names including Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota.

But there was some light at the end of the tunnel with Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai making their returns as second-half substitutes.

The Uruguayan made the telling impact with virtually the last touch of the game, rising to flick home Alexis Mac Allister’s cross and secure Liverpool’s first win at the City Ground since 1984.

“In the last second the guy who looks like a former Liverpool player thought I’ll score a goal and decide the game,” said Klopp.

“The goal was set up by a guy who was the calmest on the whole pitch. I saw it only live but I’ll never forget it. He was calm. He chips the ball there. Super assist and super-important goal.

Victory pulls Klopp’s men four points clear of Manchester City, who face Manchester United on Sunday, and five ahead of Arsenal, who travel to Sheffield United on Monday.

Defeat leaves Forest still four points above the relegation zone and with the threat of a points deduction for breaches of financial rules still hanging over the club.

Son strikes for Spurs

Tottenham have made a habit of late fightbacks at home under Ange Postecoglou and needed another to inflict Oliver Glasner’s first defeat as Palace boss with a 3-1 win.

Eberechi Eze’s precise free-kick gave the Eagles a shock lead on the hour.

Timo Werner‘s first Spurs goal set up the grandstand finish when he tapped home Brennan Johnson’s low cross.

Cristian Romero then headed Tottenham in front before Son Heung-min sprinted clear to seal the three points.

“Persistence, some quality, belief,” said Postecoglou. The reaction was outstanding.”

Victory took Spurs to within two points of fourth-placed Aston Villa, who were in action later away to Luton.

Brentford came from behind to pile more pressure on under-fire Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino in a 2-2 draw.

Nicolas Jackson’s towering header powered the Blues into an early lead.

But Brentford are now five games unbeaten against their wealthy west London rivals.

Mads Roerslev levelled early in the second half before Yoane Wissa’s overhead kick put the Bees in front.

A header from Axel Disasi saved a point for Chelsea but there were still calls from the away fans for Pochettino to be sacked.

Newcastle kept their quest for Europe alive with their first home win for nearly three months to climb up to eighth.

The Magpies beat Wolves 3-0 to leapfrog their opponents in the table thanks to goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento.

Brighton fell further away from the fight for Europe as they were soundly beaten 3-0 at Fulham.

Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and Adama Traore struck for the Cottagers to extend Brighton’s barren run to three wins in 12 league games.

Everton remain in a relegation dogfight despite having a 10-point deduction reduced to six this week.

Beto missed a first-half penalty before putting the Toffees in front against West Ham.

But the Hammers came back to win 3-1 with goals from Kurt Zouma, Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez.

David Moyes’ men moved up to seventh and within two points of the top six.

Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season came undone in a shock 2-1 loss to Wolves, as Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday. Arsenal closed to within a point of the lead by cruising to a 4-0 win at Bournemouth, while Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1 to move into the top four. City had won the opening six games of their title defence as they aim to become the first side to ever claim four consecutive English top-flight titles. By contrast, Wolves had taken just four points from their first six games but stunned the champions at Molineux.

Ruben Dias‘ own goal put the home side in front, but City responded after the break through Julian Alvarez‘s free-kick.

Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time.

“We have to do more but even when we win we have to do more,” said City boss Pep Guardiola, who watched the game from the stands due to suspension.

“When we win and lose we do it together. Today we were not at our best.”

City’s defeat means Liverpool can go top should they end Tottenham’s unbeaten Premier League start under Ange Postecoglou in the 1615GMT kick off.

United have now lost four of their opening seven league games of the season to pile more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Joachim Andersen’s stunning first-half volley separated the sides at Old Trafford.

United had won a League Cup meeting between the sides 3-0 in midweek.

But with Palace restored to full strength, the Red Devils suffered from a familiar lack of cutting edge up front as they laboured to get back into the game.

“The final part of the game we didn’t play our best game,” said Ten Hag.

“You have to be sharp and clinical. It’s about decision making.”

Defeat sees United slip to 10th in the table.

Arsenal moved up to second as Mikel Arteta‘s men eased to victory at Bournemouth.

Bukayo Saka had been an injury doubt, but headed into an empty net to open the scoring on his 87th consecutive Premier League appearance.

Saka could have had more had he not then handed over penalty duties.

Martin Odegaard has shared responsibility from the spot with Saka this season and the Norwegian slotted home Arsenal’s second before the break.

Both Saka and Odegaard then stood aside to give Kai Havertz the confidence boost of his first goal for the club when the Gunners were awarded a second spot-kick on 53 minutes.

Ben White rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

Newcastle’s recovery from a slow start to the season continues as the Magpies overcame Burnley 2-0.

Miguel Almiron fired into the top corner to open the scoring and Alexander Isak’s penalty secured the points 14 minutes from time.

Ollie Watkins bagged a hat-trick in Villa’s stunning demolition of Brighton.

Two goals from the England striker and a Pervis Estupinan own goal put Villa 3-0 up inside 26 minutes.

Ansu Fati reduced the deficit with his first Brighton goal.

But the day belonged to Watkins and he became the first Villa player in 47 years to score two hat-tricks in one season.

Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz piled on the pain for Brighton in the closing stages and did enough to edge Villa ahead of the Seagulls on goal difference.

“We are feeling strong here with the supporters, we are connected with them,” said Villa boss Unai Emery after a 10th consecutive home Premier League win.

Luton secured their first ever Premier League win with a 2-1 victory at Everton.

Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris were on target for the Hatters, who climb out of the relegation zone.

Sheffield United remain bottom after the Blades were beaten 2-0 at West Ham with Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio getting the goals for David Moyes’ men.
