Doctors have questioned the administration of CPR on a conscious individual.

A video of a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) saving the life of a 70-year-old passenger on a train has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred in the general coach of train number 15708, Amrapali Express where the elderly passenger suddenly required medical attention. The TTE swiftly sprang into action, administering lifesaving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

A viral clip shared by the Ministry of Railways captured the intense moment, showing the TTE performing CPR on the conscious passenger. Thanks to the TTE’s prompt intervention, the passenger was stabilised and later rushed to a hospital from Bihar’s Chhapra railway station.

“TTE’s promptness gave ‘life’. While travelling in the general coach of train number 15708 ‘Amrapali Express’, a 70-year-old passenger suffered a heart attack. The TTE deployed there immediately gave CPR and saved the life of the passenger. The passenger was then sent to the hospital at Chhapra railway station,” the post shared by the Ministry of Railways read.

The video has sparked intense debate on social media, with some users praising the TTE’s quick thinking and others questioning the administration of CPR on a conscious individual. Medical experts typically recommend CPR only for people who are unresponsive or have stopped breathing. Many doctors expressed concern over the viral video, labeling it “misleading” and potentially detrimental to public health. They urged the Railways to remove the clip from social media, fearing it could incorrectly influence people’s understanding of proper CPR techniques.

A doctor said, “Don’t give CPR to awake patients and mouth to mouth breathing not required here plus the faulty compressions. If you really want to create awareness delete this video, force govt to start giving mandatory CPR lessons right from schools and colleges.”

“Performing CPR on a conscious patient is very dangerous and wrong. This is no joke. CPR is a life-saving procedure. Please delete this video so that people don’t lose lives over misinformation,” another doctor wrote.

Activist Dr Vishnu Rajgadia has also filed a Right to Information (RTI) application seeking details about the incident and requesting information about the TTE’s medical training and the Railways’ investigation into the incident.

Railway authorities said Savind Kumar would be felicitated and also given a cash prize

A ticket examiner’s swift response and preparedness to tackle a medical emergency saved an elderly passenger’s life after he suffered a heart attack during a long-distance train journey.

BP Karn and his brother were travelling from Bihar’s Darbhanga to Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi in a first-class coach of Pawan Express. Suddenly, he experienced a sharp pain in his chest and passed out. His brother raised an emergency with the Railways’ RailMadad portal.

The ticket examiner received an alert and reached the coach the elderly passenger was travelling in. In the meantime, the passenger’s brother had contacted the family doctor and he advised cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Ticket examiner Savind Kumar administered CPR to the elderly passenger for about 15 minutes before he opened his eyes. Visuals show Mr Kumar administering CPR, as per the doctor’s instructions while repeatedly checking if he is doing it right.

Shortly after, the train reached Chhapra station. Following the Railways alert about the medical emergency, a medical team was waiting at the station. The passenger was taken off the train and admitted to a hospital.

Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Bhushan Sood has said ticket examiner Savind Kumar would be felicitated. A cash prize has also been announced. Railway authorities have said they are proud of him.

CPR is an emergency treatment carried out when someone stops breathing or the heart stops beating. A common way of administering CPR involves clasping the hands together and pushing hard and fast on the patient’s chest. CPR is considered a life-saving skill.

CPR is a first aid procedure that can help someone in cardiac arrest

A doctor whose speedy action saved the life of an elderly man at the Delhi Airport recently spoke to ANI and shared details of the incident. Dr Priya who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the man who collapsed after suffering a heart attack, said that no one could take the place of God but can only work according to his will. She also highlighted that quick administration of CPR saved the man’s life.

Notably, Dr Priya, a resident of Rajasthan’s Ajmer, was waiting for her flight at Terminal 2 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport when she and her husband witnessed an elderly man collapsing. Recounting the events, she told ANI, ”My husband Dr. Ramakant Goyal was with me and when we reached there, a doctor couple was also there- Dr. Umesh Bansal and his wife Dr. Dolly Bansal. When the four of us saw, he was completely unresponsive, his breathing had stopped, his heartbeat had completely stopped, and he was not breathing at all.”

Seeing his condition deteriorate, the doctors decided to perform CPR on him. Dr Priya added that within some time, he became stable and his pulse rate got better.

”Airport staff was also called, the personal staff of the airport started coming there…When he became a little responsive we called his wife…He was then taken by the airport personnel,” she added.

Earlier, a video went viral showing the doctor frantically pumping the elderly man’s chest while constantly motivating him, asking him to “take deep breaths”.
