One innings was all that Cooper Connolly needed to reverse his fortunes, both literally and statistically. The left-handed Australian went from scoring only 27 runs in his previous seven T20 appearances to accumulating an unconquered 72 on his IPL debut.

In the face-off against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on Tuesday, the Punjab Kings batter exhibited why he is a much better player than the recent poor returns suggested. For the 22-year-old, a brief period away from the sport did the trick.

“I had a couple of weeks at home to refresh and reset. That was probably the point where I changed and told myself that I was going to go to the IPL fresh,” Connolly said after deservedly winning the Player-of-the-Match trophy for his well-constructed knock.

There was never a question mark over the sheer talent he possesses; it was about how often he could convert potential into productivity. Connolly’s mental strength to overcome failures and begin a new chapter with a bang impressed Yuzvendra Chahal.

“Connolly is only 22 years old, but he is very hungry. The way he performed at No. 3 in his very first IPL game and the match-winning innings he delivered show how mature he is mentally. This is a good sign for our team. The way he is batting, he could be one of the finds of the season,” said Chahal, another shining light for PBKS in its season opener.

Also among the members of the unofficial Connolly fan army is Kings captain Shreyas Iyer. “Some of the shots he played were surreal to watch. Connolly has got great awareness as a player. He has a great mindset and hopefully he continues with the same form,” Shreyas sang the praises of the new recruit.

PBKS would hope that Tuesday’s masterclass was the first of many in red and blue.

Punjab Kings’ latest recruit Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly prides himself on being versatile and is open to batting at any position the team deems fit in his maiden IPL season next year.

Known for his aggressive batting, sharp fielding and handy left-arm spin, Connolly was snapped up by Punjab Kings for ₹3 crore at the mini-auction earlier this month.

“I like to model my game on being able to be versatile in any position. So whether that’s at three, whether that’s in the middle, I’m happy to perform any role,” Connolly said at a virtual media interaction on Monday (December 22, 2025).

The 22-year-old has been in sensational form for Perth Scorchers, scoring two blistering fifties, in the ongoing Big Bash League batting at No. 3.

However, Punjab Kings are particularly keen on his ability to finish games and handle high-pressure situations, as highlighted by skipper Shreyas Iyer post the auction.

“I feel like I’m still learning the role at number three for the (Perth) Scorchers. It’s a role I enjoy. But if the role in the IPL is different, that’s totally understandable because it’s a world class team.

“To just be in the middle order would be sort of a nice opportunity just to sort of knuckle down and get to work in the middle order,” he added.

Connolly has quickly established himself as one of the most promising young talents in Australian cricket. He made his T20I and ODI debuts in September last year before earning his Baggy Green in January.

The Western Australian also impressed during the ODI series against India, producing a calm, match-winning knock under pressure.

Reflecting on his rapid rise over the past three years, Connolly said adapting to the demands of international cricket has been crucial.

“I think over the last three years, it’s been about understanding how different the international level is. It’s about adjusting to that, understanding how bowlers are trying to get me out more and how I can counter that.”

“I’ve had to earn the right to be in the Australian set-up. So it’s about learning from guys like Travis Head, Steve Smith, how they go about it and how they sort of train to all those standards.” “I’m just trying to tweak my game slowly and add more strings to it as I move forward.”

Connolly also said he is looking forward to working closely with Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting, who is the head coach of Punjab Kings.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. I haven’t done a lot of work with him just yet. So, I’m looking forward to spending some time with him and sort of doing some tweaks to my batting and seeing what his thoughts are on it.” He is also looking forward to face some of the best bowlers in the world at the IPL.

“Everyone goes to this tournament (IPL) because it’s probably going to be the most competitive. And also looking forward to getting over there and challenging myself against some of the best bowlers in the world.”

Aware that IPL conditions will be vastly different from the fast, bouncy pitches of Australia, Connolly said adapting to spin would be a big challenge.

“Yeah, it’s very different to Australia. We’ve obviously got some fast, bouncy wickets. But that challenge of playing spin is a challenge that is tough for everyone.

“So, it’s just about picking the brains of people that have done it for a long period of time and understanding how they go about it, I guess, add their method into my game and see how I can sort of play in those spinning conditions.

A rather interesting and rare incident took place at the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2024 season, when a ball was hit straight onto the roof of a cricket ground. The Docklands Stadium in Melbourne is mainly used for Australian rules football, but is also the home ground of BBL franchise Melbourne Renegades, making it one of the few cricket stadiums that have a roof at the top of the stadium. This caused one of the rarest moments in cricket, as the ball went straight up and smacked against the roof before coming down.

In a game between the Renegades and Perth Scorchers, batter Cooper Connolly hit a ball by former Australian bowler Kane Richardson high into the air. The ball travelled high enough to hit the roof, and came back down with tremendous speed, even causing a bit of discomfort to Richardson, who tried catching it.

Watch: Ball hits roof in BBL

The incident caused the ball to be declared as a dead ball altogether due to a rule change in 2023. Earlier, such an incident would result in the batting side being given six runs. However, it also depends on the discretion of the umpire, who can award a six if he decides it’s a ball that would’ve clear the ropes.

Had there been no roof, the ball may have come down at a slower pace and made it an easier catch for Richardson.

Perth Scorchers, who were struggling at 45/4 in 9.4 overs at that stage, ended up posting a total of 143 in 20 overs. Connolly went from 12 off 22 balls to 66 off 50 balls, top-scoring for his side.

The total did not prove to be enough, as Melbourne Renegades chased it down with an over to spare

Both sides are batting for a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.

Australia announced their T20I squad for their upcoming series against Scotland and England, with Perth Scorchers all-rounder Cooper Connolly earning his maiden T20I call-up. The post-David Warner era has begun for Australia, and a new opening pair will take the field for their white-ball series against Scotland and England. The Baggy Greens will play a three-match T20I series against Scotland in September. Australia will also play three T20Is and five ODIs against England later in the month.

The three T20Is against Scotland will be played on September 4, 6, and 7, and the England T20I series will begin on September 11.

In Warner’s place, Jake Fraser-McGurk has been included in the T20I squads for both series and in the ODI squad against England. Fraser-McGurk will look to establish himself as a long-term opening alternative for Australia.

Connolly has featured in 15 domestic T20s. He starred for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League 2022-23 final with his quick-fire 25* off 11 deliveries. In his Sheffield Shield debut, he scored 90 against Tasmania earlier this year.

Mitchell Marsh will lead the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, who has been rested. Cummins is currently involved in the ongoing Major League Cricket with the San Francisco Unicorns.

The experienced duo of Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell will also miss the T20I series but will link up with the squad for the ODI series against England.

Matthew Short, who travelled with Australia’s T20 World Cup squad as a reserve player, will miss out on the T20I tour due to the birth of his first child.

“This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players in the absence of David Warner and Matthew Wade, as well as giving some senior players time to prepare for the home summer and a busy first half of next year. We are particularly pleased to offer Cooper his first opportunity in the T20 squad, having introduced the likes of Jake, Spencer, Xavier and Aaron in the past 12 months. They are exciting prospects to join the likes of Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis in the white-ball set-up,” national selector George Bailey said in a statement by Cricket Australia.

With the ICC Champions Trophy almost seven months away, Australia will try to find the right balance within the ODI team.

“With the Champions Trophy on our doorstep early next year, the white-ball series against Pakistan leading into the summer and a huge home Test series against India, there has been a lot of planning invested into these next six months. That has included gradual integration of new players into our white-ball squads who have earned international opportunities via excellent form in Big Bash or state cricket,” he added.

Australia T20I squad for Scotland and England: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Spencer Johnson, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
