Ahead of today’s Union Budget, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have increased the price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 49, effective February 1, dealing another cost blow to businesses in the food and hospitality sector. The hike applies to commercial cylinders widely used by hotels, restaurants, eateries, and small enterprises.

There has been no change in the price of domestic LPG cylinders used by households. OMCs said the 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder will continue to be sold at existing rates, offering relief to retail consumers.

Revised Prices Across Major Cities

According to data published on Indian Oil Corporation’s official website, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi now stands at Rs 1,740.50. In Mumbai, the revised price is Rs 1,692, while Kolkata has seen prices rise to Rs 1,844.50. In Chennai, the cylinder will now cost Rs 1,899.50.

The revision is part of the monthly price adjustment carried out by government-owned OMCs, which review LPG prices on the first day of every month based on global energy prices, currency movements, and domestic logistics costs.

The latest increase is expected to push up operating costs for the food services and hospitality industry, where commercial LPG remains a key input. Restaurants and hotels, especially smaller establishments, have been grappling with volatile input costs over the past year, and the fresh hike could add to pricing pressures.

Price Trend: Volatility Continues

Commercial LPG prices have seen sharp fluctuations in recent months. In January, OMCs had already raised prices by Rs 111, following reductions of Rs 5 in November and Rs 10 in December last year. Before October, prices had declined for six consecutive months, reflecting softer global energy trends.

In Delhi, the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder stood at Rs 1,803 in March last year, before undergoing a series of cuts and hikes through 2024 and early 2025. After falling to Rs 1,580.50 in December, prices have now risen for two consecutive months.

Despite the hike in commercial LPG, OMCs clarified that domestic LPG prices remain unchanged, with the last revision having taken place on April 8, 2025.

Jet fuel, or ATF, price on Friday (November 1, 2024) was hiked by 3.3% and rate of commercial LPG used in hotels and restaurants increased by ₹62 per 19-kg cylinder in the monthly revision done in line with international oil price trends.

The aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price was increased by ₹2,941.5 per kilolitre, or 3.3%, to ₹90,538.72 per kl in the national capital, according to state-owned fuel retailers.

The hike comes after two rounds of reduction that had taken the rates to their lowest this year.

ATF price on October 1 was cut by 6.3% (₹5,883 per kl) and by ₹4,495.5 per kl, or 4.58% on September 1.

The ATF rate in Mumbai was increased to ₹84,642.91 per kl on Friday from ₹81,866.13 previously.

Oil firms also increased the price of commercial LPG by ₹62 to ₹1,802 per 19 kg cylinder.

This is the fourth straight monthly hike in commercial LPG prices. Prices were hiked by ₹48.5 to ₹1,740 on October 1. Prior to that rates were increased by ₹6.5 per cylinder on August 1 and by ₹39 on September 1. The four rounds of increase follow four monthly price reductions.

In four price reductions, rates were cut by ₹148 per 19-kg cylinder and now in four rounds of increase, prices have gone up by ₹156 per bottle.

Commercial LPG now costs ₹1,754.50 per 19-kg cylinder in Mumbai, ₹1,911.50 in Kolkata and ₹1,964.50 in Chennai.

The rate of cooking gas used in domestic households, however, remained unchanged at ₹803 per 14.2-kg cylinder.

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) revise prices of ATF and cooking gas on the first of every month based on the average price of benchmark international fuel and foreign exchange rate.

Prices of petrol and diesel continue to remain frozen. Rates had been cut by Rs 2 per litre in mid-March. Petrol costs ₹94.72 a litre in Delhi while diesel is priced at ₹87.62.
