New Zealand’s Colin Munro, a bruising top-order batter, on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket after he was not included in the national team for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Munro played one Test, 57 ODIs and 65 T20Is for the Kiwis amassing a total of 3,010 runs, but it was in the shortest format the left-hander made a name for himself.

In T20Is, he struck runs at an impressive 156.44 and the 37-year-old remains one of the handful of players who have made upwards of 10,000 runs across all T20 competitions.

The Durban-born cricketer has made 10,961 runs from 428 T20s, averaging 30.44 and striking at 141.25.

However, Munro’s final game for New Zealand came back in 2020 when he appeared in a T20I game against India at Mount Maunganui.

“Playing for the Black Caps has always been the biggest achievement in my playing career,” said Munro in his retirement statement.

“The fact that I’ve been able to do that 123 times across all formats is something I will always be incredibly proud of,” he added.

Munro said it was the right time to bid adieu to top-level cricket.

“Although it has been a while since my last appearance, I never gave up hope that I might be able to return off the back of my franchise T20 form.

“With the announcement of the Black Caps squad for the T20 World Cup now is the perfect time to close that chapter officially,” he said.

Could not find a place: Gary Stead

New Zealand coach Gary Stead had said that Munro’s name came up for discussion while picking the squad, but could not find a place for him eventually.

However, he will continue to ply his trade in various T20 leagues across the world.

Munro has some fine records against his name as his 14-ball 50 at Sri Lanka at Eden Park in 2016 still stands at the fastest T20I fifty by a New Zealand batsman, and the fourth quickest of all time.

He also has a 47-ball century against the West Indies to his credit in 2018, and at that time it was the fastest T20I hundred by a Kiwi, which also made him the first player to score three T20I tons.

Wellington :

Hard-hitting New Zealand batter Colin Munro has announced his retirement from international cricket. He is a white-ball specialist and has featured in previous two T20 World Cup campaigns for the Blackcaps. Munro had been hoping to reignite his New Zealand career at next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, but the 37-year-old narrowly missed out on earning a recall and has decided to call time on his time as an international player.

The left-hander played more than 100 matches for the Kiwis, with his sole Test appearance against South Africa in 2013 overshadowed by an impressive white-ball career that netted three centuries and 19 half-centuries for his country.

Those three hundreds all came in the shortest format of the game, with Munro one of only seven male players to have scored three or more T20I centuries.

The former opener has featured for New Zealand at the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups and was a key member of the Kiwis’ squad that made it all the way to the thrilling ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final against England in 2019.

The southpaw will continue to play franchise cricket around the globe, but there will be no further aspirations to play for his country with his retirement effective immediately.

Reflecting on his career, Munro said featuring for New Zealand was a clear highlight.

“Playing for the Black Caps has always been the biggest achievement in my playing career. I never felt prouder than donning that jersey, and the fact that I’ve been able to do that 123 times across all formats is something I will always be incredibly proud of,” Munro said as quoted by ICC.

“Although it has been a while since my last appearance, I never gave up hope that I might be able to return off the back of my franchise T20 form. With the announcement of the Black Caps squad for the T20 World Cup now is the perfect time to close that chapter officially,” the former left-hander added.

A ball-boy stole the limelight in the Pakistan Super League on Monday, taking a stunning catch beyond the boundary rope. Though six runs were credited to the batter’s account for clearing the rope, it was the ball-boy who drew plaudits from fans in the stadium, as well as Kiwi star Colin Munro, for his diving catch. Munro, who was placed near the boundary rope where the ball-boy took the catch, was amazed to see the little child’s effort and decided to give him a warm hug.

The incident took place during the match between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi. It was a delivery from Islamabad pacer Faheem Ashraf that Zalmi’s Amer Jamal hit for a maximum.

In the same match earlier, the ball-boy had dropped the catch. But he didn’t spill the chance the second time. While the ball marginally crossed the rope, it was amazing to see a fielder celebrating a six, sharing a light moment with the ball-boy. Here’s the video:

Islamabad United emerged triumphant, limiting Peshawar Zalmi to 167/9 after scoring 196/4 themselves. Shadab Khan was named the player of the match.

“It wasn’t a typical Rawalpindi pitch, was spongy early on and ball was swinging, but if you get momentum here, it’s hard to stop. We didn’t have a set total in mind but were approaching it over by over and were looking to get at-least one boundary in every over. The way ball was seaming around until the 11th-12th over, we knew we could create problems with our pace attack. (On 300th wicket) Feeling like I’m in rhythm, if you look at figures, they don’t look good but I think they were good if you consider the match situation. Hunain is getting better day by day and hopefully, he will represent Pakistan one day. You find a good 11 during the tournament. We tried a few combinations but it’s working well now,” Shadab said after the game.
