ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, is taking efforts to popularise nutrient-rich liquid jaggery, one of its unique products made without any additive or preservative.

Liquid jaggery is currently popular in Kerala and Maharashtra. The product is being licensed to prospective entrepreneurs. Developed at the Institute’s pilot scale facility, liquid jaggery has been licensed to a Kerala-based company, which sells the product made available in bottles for ₹100 for 600 grams, a senior scientist at the Institute said.

Known as ‘Kaakvi’ in English, the product rich in potassium, and packed with minerals like manganese, calcium and zinc, is known to enhance taste of savouries. The adulterant-free product that increases haemoglobin level and controls acidity is a nutraceutical. The healthy sweetener is used for making of various confectionery items; formulations of Ayurvedic medicines, and used as ingredient in ice creams, sudharas (Maharashtrian fruit recipe), and fruit salad, the senior scientist said.

The Institute charges ₹10,000 for training and technology transfer of liquid jaggery. Health-conscious consumers prefer liquid jaggery, since unlike highly refined sugar, it releases energy gradually in the body, the scientist said.

Through its pilot scale facility, ICAR-SBI also produces cane jam, dietary fibre food products and novel frozen food products. The lab scale facility has successfully tested making of cane juice powder through spray and freeze-dried methods.

Budget 2026: Micro units demand MSME credit cards https://artifex.news/article70529130-ece/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 14:02:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article70529130-ece/ Read More “Budget 2026: Micro units demand MSME credit cards” »

Micro and cottage enterprises have appealed to the Central government to issue credit cards to Micro, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (MSMEs) as announced in the Union budget last year.

President of the Coimbatore Tiruppur District Micro and Cottage Entrepreneurs Association C. Sivakumar said the government announced in the budget last year that MSME credit cards will be issued on the lines of kisan cards for farmers. However, this is yet to be implemented. There should be raw material banks in MSME clusters such as Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu so that micro units get the raw materials at prices lower than the market price (wholesale and retail).

The government should also simplify procedures so that micro entrepreneurs can also place orders with Central government public sector undertakings.

Furthermore, the CGTMSE scheme fee for entrepreneurs who take loans from nationalised banks should be reduced to 0.5 %. Micro-entrepreneurs should be completely exempted from bank transaction charges if their sales are below ₹50 lakh in the first year and banks should have branches dedicated for MUDRA loans.

To facilitate export orders for Tamil Nadu entrepreneurs, a global buyer-seller meet should be organised in Coimbatore district on behalf of the Central government.

The work to set up an MSME Technology Centre at Arasur in Coimbatore district is stalled though land has been handed over for the project. Works should resume so that the centre is commissioned at the earliest, he said.

There is an expectation that one per cent of the revenue generated by industry should be allocated to the MSME sector in the upcoming budget to protect micro, small and medium enterprises.

J. James, president of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises, said the Central government allocated just ₹22,000 crore for MSMEs in the last budget, which was inadequate. At least 1 % of the revenue generated by the MSMEs should be allocated to the industry in the budget.

The government should provide budget allocations and resume the 15% subsidy that was provided to small and medium enterprises for purchasing machinery.

If an entrepreneur defaults repayment of bank loan, he should have six months time before his assets are covered under the SARAS Act.

Coimbatore’s MSMEs are known for manufacture of wet grinders, compressors, and pump motors. All these units are impacted severely by the 18% GST. The industry expects the government to change the GST rate to 5%, he said.

Mr. Sivakumar and Mr. James said nationalised banks should provide loans to micro units at 5% interest and the GST on job works should be reduced to 5% from 18%.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman V. Narayanan said that ISRO was working on a project that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018 wherein humans will be sent to space.

He was in Coimbatore to take part in a private college function. At Coimbatore Airport, he said that an unmanned satellite would be sent to space in December and the satellite would carry a Vyommitra, a half-humanoid robot developed by ISRO for the Gaganyaan flight. By December end, based on its success, two rockets without human beings would be sent to space.

By 2027 March, ISRO has planned to send humans into space. Gaganyaan trails works are over by 85 per cent, but sending humans to space involved a lot of trials and tests. In the event of an accident, ISRO is working on projects to ferry human beings back safely. Not only ISRO is involved in this project, but also many more organisations, he said.

Watch: How are Coimbatore’s automotive firms gearing up for EV transition? https://artifex.news/article69108611-ece/ Fri, 17 Jan 2025 11:11:50 +0000 https://artifex.news/article69108611-ece/ Read More “Watch: How are Coimbatore’s automotive firms gearing up for EV transition?” »

]]>

In the last episode, my colleague and host of Climate Economy, Kunal Shankar, spoke about the shifts underway in India’s transport sector, as it attempts to decarbonise. One among the many places where this transition is likely to be felt most is Coimbatore. That’s because this district is home to many of the smaller firms that form part of the automobile sector’s value chain catering to Internal combustion engine vehicles.

Coimbatore is one among the leading supply chain clusters in the country for the auto sector. Its journey as a component manufacturer for automobiles started almost six decades ago led by the foundries that made castings, factories that manufactured motors, and the demand from automobile majors in Tamil Nadu.

In a district where streets of one or two room workshops, called micro or cottage industries, contribute to the economy, are there job losses, job shifts, or new jobs as the industries prepare for the transitions in the mobility sector? Is there adequate funding available for the MSMEs? Are these units plugged into the latest developments in technology? Let us drive into the auto clusters to understand better what’s happening on the ground.

The court has observed that the bonding between a human and an animal ought to be handled sensitively.

Chennai:

In a heartwarming decision, the Madras High Court has allowed a veterinarian to reunite with a partially paralysed baby monkey he treated for 10 months in Coimbatore.

The animal, a survivor of multiple dog bites in Coimbatore, was recently transferred to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai by forest authorities, without considering its welfare, the petitioner said in a plea.

The veterinarian Dr Vallaiappan, while seeking custody of the monkey, argued that it requires ongoing care as it hasn’t fully recovered or become independent. The court has permitted him to visit the monkey on Saturday and file a report so the court can decide on the plea.

The veterinarian took care of the animal from December last year to October this year, till authorities shifted the monkey a fortnight ago. The court has observed that the bonding between a human and an animal ought to be handled sensitively.

The Tamil Nadu government should make insurance cover for construction workers mandatory in building plan approval applications, the Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers Union has said.

General secretary of the Union N. Selvaraj told The Hindu on Friday that three construction workers died in accidents at construction sites in and around Coimbatore in the last 10 days. Even if a worker is not registered with the construction workers welfare board, his family will get ₹5 lakh compensation if he dies at the work site. Further, compensation should be paid to the worker’s family – depending on his age – by the property owner under the Workman Compensation Act.

However, most of the owners do not pay this amount. It takes a long time to settle the issue legally too and the family of the worker does not benefit.

Hence, the State government should make it mandatory for those who submit applications for building plan approval to get insurance cover for the workers. Only two public sector insurance companies have such policies. The applicant can take insurance cover for 10 workers or so – depending on the size of the building under construction, pay premium for one year and submit the details when the application is submitted for plan approval. This will benefit the workers, he said.

Festival season, when sale of kitchen equipment peak, does not offer hope for wet grinder manufacturers in Coimbatore.

Manufacturers of the grinders, a product that has Geographical Indication tag, are moving to other businesses as demand has slumped.

R. Soundarakumar, president of the Coimbatore Wet Grinders and Accessories Manufacturers’ Association, told The Hindu on Tuesday, September 26 that the demand used to peak from Dasara and go on till Pongal. The manufacturers in Coimbatore were selling more than one lakh grinders a month. “Now we sell just about 50,000 grinders a month and on an average the total sales is just 30% of what it used to be,” he said.

Of the nearly 200 end product manufacturers, only 80 – 100 manufacturers are continuing business. “The decline started more than six years ago when the government distributed grinders free of cost. We thought business will revive. But, one development after another – GST, COVID-19, etc – has led to complete fall of business,” he said.

‘Consumers now buy idli/dosa batter from shops’

There is no demand for wet grinders because of change in food habits and life style. Most of the consumers buy idli/dosa batter and do not grind batter at home. The demand has fallen across geographies.

The dealers ask for new models regularly. But, the manufacturers require nearly ₹13 lakh to make a die. With fall in demand and business, they find it difficult to make new models of grinders regularly.

Also Read | Wet grinder manufacturers seek support

Though the Central government is implementing from 2004 a cluster project for wet grinder and accessory manufacturers it is practically difficult to make dies through common facilities or take up common marketing, says Mr. Soundarakumar.

The issues that the manufacturers face include 18 % GST on the grinders and shortage in availability of grinding stones. “We have also not raised the issues much because there is no demand for the grinders,” he added.
