The area around Janpath station of the Delhi Metro saw widespread protests, on July 20, along with repeated lathi-charge by the Delhi Police.

While on the site on July 20, 2026, The Hindu came across a petrol pump. A Bharat Petroleum fuel station. The signs of violence were visible.

On July 21, 2026, The Hindu visited the spot again. The shattered glass still existed. The pump is also a vehicle detailing studio and a coffee shop owned by Siddharth and Sarvgun Puri (names changed). The incident happened two days before the inauguration of their store.

He said that the violence “started at 6:28 p.m.” and till then they were “providing first aid” to all, along with “washroom services”. Siddharth says “till 5:30-6 p.m.” it was all “peaceful”.

The Hindu asked the owners if they had reached out to the police. Mr. Siddharth said that they had gone to file an FIR, and was provided with the number of the investigating officer (IO). He added that he will now file an “online FIR”.

One person against the violence

After talking to the employees of the petrol pump who were present at the site during the incident, The Hindu found out that when the chaos began, all of them sought safety and shelter.

 Except one woman.

S., 40, was the only one who did not run. This was corroborated by her colleagues.

“Bache protest kar rhe the. Police ne unpar lathi charge kar diya. Bache idhar udhar bhaage, (Kids were protesting, the police lathi-charged on them. Kids ran here and there),” she says.

“Kuch bache thak chuke the toh woh baith gaye. (Some kids were tired, and they sat down),” she says pointing to a spot on the ground inside the petrol pump.

“Police jab andar aayi hai lathi charge karti hui aur unhone yahan bhi bachon ko maarna shuru kara toh woh udhar bhaag gaye. Aur jab udhar se saare bache aaye bhaage hue, jahan se bhi laaye the pathar toh police vaale idhar bhaage hain”(pointing towards inside the pump premises (When the police came inside doing lathi charge, they also started beating up the kids. So(kids) ran. When the kids brought back stones from wherever they had procured, that is when the police personnel ran here).”

“Woh pathar unke maar rhe the woh, lekin woh phir achanak yahan bhi lag gye. (They were throwing stones at them but it also hit here),” says S. while recounting how the window pane got broken by stones thrown by the protesters.

They were meant for the police personnel and inadvertently hit the window panes of the pump, she adds.

“Mein toh wahin khadi ho kar rokti rahi. Baaki toh sab chup hi gaye the, lekin merse nahin jaaya gaya ki bachein hain kahin gir pad ke lag na jaaye. Vaise hi itni chote khaa chuke hain woh. (I kept standing there and stopping them. Everyone else had already hidden, but I could not leave because they are kids; they might get hurt after falling. They had already suffered such wounds).”

“Ab mein medicines rakhti hoon apne saath (I keep medicines with myself),” says S., a day after the incident. She shows The Hindu the medicines that she carries in her pocket and the ones she says that she used to “treat the kids”.

Upon being asked the reason for her courage against bipartisan violence. S. replied with just one sentence.

“Kyunki mein maa hoon. Mere bhi do bache hain. (I also have two kids. Because I am a mother).”

Students and government job aspirants gathered at the Eco Garden in Lucknow on Friday to protest alleged widespread irregularities in recruitment examinations, demanding that the government address their grievances.

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke also joined the protest, demanding accountability. “I am not scared of asking real questions to the government. Youths of our country are not afraid of asking real questions to the government. We will continue the movement, we will succeed,” Mr. Dipke said.

Call for high-level inquiry

“There have been irregularities, mismanagement at examination centres, and a lack of transparency in the recruitment processes at various levels of competitive examinations including for Lekhpal [village revenue officer] and U.P. Sub-Inspector,” said Omkar Singh, one of the aspirants at the protest venue. “We demand a thorough and impartial investigation into all allegations. An independent high-level inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the Lekhpal main examination is essential, as videos of misconduct have gone viral,” he added.

“Our demands include the re-conduct of the Lekhpal main examination and the prompt release of the detailed scorecard for the U.P. Sub-Inspector examination. The government has failed to conduct numerous recruitment and eligibility tests, and we insist that the recruitment examination calendar be adhered to completely,” Mr. Singh said.

Grievance redressal needed

Students also accused local authorities in Prayagraj, a major coaching hub in Uttar Pradesh, of closing three coaching centres under the pretext of non-compliance with building safety regulations. In reality, students said, the authorities suspect these centres of supporting the youth movement.

The Lucknow protesters also demanded that the government set up a permanent dialogue and grievance redressal mechanism to address the issues faced by aspirants preparing for competitive examinations. On May 29, hundreds of these aspirants had assembled in the streets of Prayagraj for a similar protest.

Authoritarian attitude

The Opposition Congress party criticised the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh government for failing to initiate dialogue with protesting students. “In a healthy democracy, the government initiates dialogue with concerned stakeholders to understand their grievances and concerns,” said Congress national secretary Shahnawaz Alam.

“In the past also, issues were raised by the student community, which was discussed in a democratic manner. But the present government is acting in an authoritarian way. This week, we saw the level of the employment crisis in U.P. as over 20 lakh aspirants gave the constable examination for around 32,000 seats. We demand that the government addresses our grievances at the earliest,” he added.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which organised a protest led by its founder Abhijeet Dipke at the Jantar Mantar here on Saturday (June 6, 2026) demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s removal, warned that the agitation would expand across the country if he is not sacked or does not resign voluntarily.

Addressing a press conference, CJP spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das said the protest had drawn participants from several States and marked the beginning of a broader youth movement centred on education and governance issues.

Birthed as an online campaign in May, the CJP, which garnered over 22 million followers on Instagram, had exhorted youths to take part in the protest in the national capital over the issue of alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests, in an apparent show of strength.

“We are giving the government seven days. Either Dharmendra Pradhan should resign respectfully, or Prime Minister Narendra Modi should sack him. If his resignation does not come within seven days, this movement will spread throughout the country,” Mr. Ranka said.

He said the organisers were receiving messages from supporters in different States expressing readiness to hold peaceful demonstrations, and claimed the group would wait for a week before announcing its next course of action.

Describing the turnout on Saturday (June 6, 2026) as a significant moment, Mr. Ranka said the protest demonstrated that young people were willing to mobilise around issues affecting them.

“June 6, 2026, will be written in history because today the politics of this country has completely changed,” he said, adding that many young people who were often discouraged from taking to the streets had come together for a peaceful demonstration.

The organisers repeatedly projected the protest as a youth-led campaign and sought to frame it as a response to concerns surrounding the education system.

“The time has come to reset our education system, and we have started that reset today,” Mr. Ranka said, asserting that the demand for Pradhan’s resignation was the immediate focus of the movement.

According to him, removing the Education Minister was necessary if meaningful reforms were to be undertaken.

“Until this education minister is there, we will not be able to improve the education system of this country,” he said.

While maintaining that the resignation demand remained the top priority, Mr. Ranka indicated that the campaign would continue beyond that issue.

“This is just the beginning. There are so many problems of the youth of this country,” he said, arguing that concerns relating to education had not received adequate attention.

Asked whether the mobilisation should be viewed as a protest, a movement or a political platform, Ranka described it as “a platform for the youth”, “a collective for the youth” and “a movement for the youth”, while leaving open how it may evolve in the future.

The organisers also rejected suggestions that the mobilisation was linked to any established political formation and described themselves as “pro-youth, pro-education, pro-Constitution and pro-India”.

Mr. Ranka claimed the turnout had exceeded expectations and emphasised that the gathering remained peaceful despite the crowds.

“It was such a huge crowd, and yet it remained a very, very peaceful protest. Maybe one of the most peaceful protests the country has seen in a while,” he said.

“The Gen Z and the youth of this country have Gandhi and Ambedkar in their blood,” he added, thanking participants who had travelled from different parts of the country to attend the event.

Saurav Das said people from several States, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and those in the Northeast, had joined the protest.

He also referred to online support for the campaign, claiming that hundreds of thousands of people had signed petitions seeking the Minister’s resignation.

Asked if they would send any representation to Mr. Pradhan or request a meeting, Mr. Ranka said, “Why doesn’t he just resign.”

Mr. Das said several other student groups have written to the Minister over the issue but have not received any response.

“The youth wants to talk, but when the government is not talking, that is when they are getting on the road,” Mr. Das said.

He also thanked Delhi Police for facilitating the demonstration and said maintaining peace had been a priority for the organisers.

“We are very happy that the Delhi Police’s priority was peaceful demonstration,” he said.

The protest was called by Mr. Dipke, who started the online satirical account of the Cockroach Janta Party, also called ‘CJP’, amid demands for accountability over recent developments in the education sector.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Dipke had urged Mr. Pradhan to step down by 5 p.m., with organisers later announcing the seven-day deadline for action by the minister or the government.
