Searchers in southeastern China have found another body from rain-triggered landslides last weekend in Jiangxi province, raising the death toll to 16, state media said on Thursday (September 10, 2026).

The deaths were spread across three towns in Suichuan County, where heavy rain drenched the area for days after Typhoon Saudel came ashore on China’s east coast.

A mudslide in Gaoping town killed 13 people, state broadcaster CCTV said in an online report. Two others were found dead in Zuo’an town, and one other in Tanghu town.

More than 18,000 people have been evacuated in Suichuan County, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Two more people were killed in neighbouring Hunan province following rains brought by the typhoon, state media reported earlier. The CCTV report didn’t specify the cause of the deaths but said the rain had triggered landslides and other disasters.

Saudel made landfall twice in Zhejiang province on August 28 and a third time as a tropical storm in Fujian province on September 3. Jiangxi and Hunan lie inland from the coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian.

Landslides in eastern China have killed 13 people with three others still missing, state media said on Tuesday (September 8, 2026), days after heavy rains unleashed by Typhoon Saudel.

A mudslide, which hit Mingkeng village in Jiangxi province on Saturday (September 5, 2026), left 12 dead and one missing, state news agency Xinhua said, citing local officials.

Another person was found dead and two others remained missing after landslides in the nearby townships of Zuo’an and Tanghu.

The landslides followed days of torrential rains brought by Saudel, which first made landfall on China’s eastern coast at the end of last month.

Several cities suspended work, schools and transport services in the face of the heavy rains.

The landslide in Mingkeng damaged homes and destabilised roads, according to Xinhua. More than 170 rescuers were deployed to the site to search for those missing.

The landslides come after devastating glacial floods in the Himalayas last month that have killed at least 43 people in Tibet, according to state media, as well as more than 1,300 people across the border in Nepal.

There are more than 5,000 missing in Nepal and another 519 on the Tibetan side of the border.

Scientists say climate change is accelerating glacial melting worldwide and making extreme storms more frequent, increasing the risk of such disasters.

The death toll from a landslide in southwestern China earlier this month rose to 51, with 10 people still missing, authorities said on Thursday (July 30, 2026).

The landslide, which occurred on July 17 in Chongqing’s Pengshui County, swept away several residential buildings at the foot of a mountain and along a riverbank.

State media footage showed a huge pile of rocks and earth that had collapsed into a residential and commercial street, with rescue workers deployed to the scene.

“Currently 51 people have been found and confirmed dead, and 10 people are still missing,” Pengshui officials said on social media late on Thursday (July 30).

“In this disaster, a total of over 1,100 people were safely evacuated,” they said, adding that 10 people were rescued, including three who had been briefly hospitalised.

A huge search and recovery operation has been underway since the disaster, involving over 1,080 rescue personnel, according to the statement.

Rescuers faced serious challenges during the 325-hour operation, including massive boulders, elevation changes, tight spaces and high temperatures.

Underwater divers and robots also scoured the nearby river, while boulders were blasted away and more than 330,000 cubic metres of material was excavated, it added.

Rescuers had previously warned last week that there were no longer any signs of life in the area.

“Efforts to support and comfort victims’ families, provide assistance and relief, and handle resettlement and post-disaster arrangements are progressing in an orderly manner,” authorities added.

The disaster occurred less than two weeks after another landslide in northwestern Gansu province buried 33 people and left 21 dead.

Rescue crews on Saturday (July 18, 2026) raced to find survivors from a landslide in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing that killed at least eight people and left 34 missing.

The landslide occurred in Pengshui County on Friday morning (July 17, 2026) on the outer edge of the Chongqing municipality, when massive amounts of rocks and soil washed down a slope, burying more than 10 residential buildings, state broadcaster CCTV said. Ten people were rescued but sent to the hospital, while more than 1,100 people have been relocated.

Photos and Associated Press videos showed that one of the fallen rocks appeared to be larger than a multi-storey building, with ruins scattered across the steep terrain. One of the damaged buildings had its top part crushed, and a car was seen half-buried near another building.

The landslide contained about 18,000 cubic meters of rocks and debris, and the largest single rock was around 3,000 cubic meters, Wang Chuanjun, head of Planning and Natural Resources in Pengshui County, told a news conference on Friday (July 17, 2026).

CCTV said persistent rain hit Pengshui from Friday night (July 17, 2026) to Saturday morning (July 18, 2026), and 19.2 cm (nearly 8 inches) of rainfall was recorded at a weather station. The unstable weather made the rescue operation more challenging, it said. As the rain eased slightly, rescue teams entered the site to conduct on-the-ground inspections of the collapsed buildings and riverbank areas.

While rescue operations were being carried out on one side of the massive rocks, teams would later need to look beneath the rocks, where they may face the risk of injury from the boulders becoming unstable and sliding, CCTV reported. Once the search around the rocks is complete, officers will drill into the boulders and fill the holes with explosives to break them apart, it said.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission on Saturday (July 18, 2026) allocated a relief fund of 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) to support the restoration of infrastructure and public service facilities following the disaster.

The rain-triggered landslide occurred near a stretch of the Wujiang River, which cuts through karst mountains dotted with small towns and terraced fields.

Pengshui County is located in the southeast part of Chongqing, bordering the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou.

A landslide on Friday (July 17, 2026) in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing killed eight people and left 34 missing, burying residential buildings and forcing more than 1,100 people to evacuate, state media reported.

Ten people were rescued from the debris, among them two seriously injured, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The landslide occurred at around 9:08 a.m. in Chongqing’s Pengshui County, when massive amounts of rocks and soil washed downslope, burying more than 10 residential buildings, state broadcaster CCTV said.

Water, electricity and gas supplies were cut off within a 1-km (0.6-mile) radius of the landslide to prevent further disruptions. Over 800 rescuers were on the site.

Images by CCTV showed part of a mountainside collapsing onto a residential area. Several buildings were located next to the collapse site, while rescue crews combed through the debris. Rescue efforts were hindered by the unstable terrain and the risk of another landslide, according to the broadcaster.

Images shared on social media showed orange-clad rescuers using excavators to dig through the rubble. At one point, a team of rescuers pulled a survivor out of the debris.

Large slabs of rock had slid beside buildings into a waterway below. Two buildings that looked about five and 15 storeys high were damaged but still standing.

The rain-triggered landslide occurred near a section of the Wujiang River, which cuts through karst mountains peppered with small towns and terraces.

Authorities said they sent more than 8,000 disaster relief items to Chongqing, including tents, folding beds and family emergency kits.

Pengshui County is located in the southeast part of Chongqing, bordering the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou.

The death toll from a landslip in northwestern China rose to 21, state media reported on Wednesday (July 8, 2026), following the conclusion of rescue operations at the scene.

The landslip, shortly before 7 a.m. on Tuesday (July 7, 2026), buried 33 people in the Nanhe township of Longnan city in Gansu province, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

State broadcaster CCTV reported all the people trapped were pulled out early on Wednesday (July 8, 2026), with seven of them having minor injuries. Five others were not injured, it said.

The cause of the landslip was not immediately clear. Photos and video posted online by CCTV on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) showed three excavators and rescuers on mounds of earth. The sky appeared sunny and clear.
