Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to bat first against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the blockbuster opening clash of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 here at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. CSK will head into the high-voltage Southern derby with a new captain, as MS Dhoni handed over the baton to opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The CSK and RCB have faced each other in 31 matches so far, where Chennai won 20 and Bengaluru registered just 10 victories.

Four overseas players Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Maheesh Theekshana, Mustafizur Rahman and domestic player Sameer Rizvi are making their debut for CSK.

Speaking at the time of the toss, Faf du Plessis said, “We’ll bat first. Looks like a good wicket, conditions here are a bat-first wicket. First time back here, great to see the Chennai fans again but I’m here with RCB and hopefully we can turn over a very good CSK team. Prep has been good, we need to turn up now. A seasoned campaigner brings that experience. Really good, our bowling resources fit well. Got more backup. Hopefully, injuries don’t bother us too much. Alzarri Joseph comes in tonight, got a few spinners in the middle. And since we are batting first, we’ll see how it goes.”

Newly appointed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad said that the confidence that the franchise gave him during his tough phase helped him play more freely. Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Thursday announced star opener Ruturaj Gikwad as the side’s new skipper of the team. The decision marks the end of Dhoni’s long reign at the helm of the CSK, during which he led them to five IPL titles.

Speaking in a video by CSK, Ruturaj said that the management was well aware of the tough phase Gaikwad was going through in the COVID-19, which affected his game as he could score just five runs across his first three innings for CSK, including two ducks. However, the franchise backed him and assured him that he would stay around in the team, which helped him turn around his fortunes. The stylish right-hander went on to hit successive three fifties in the next three games and performed consistently from then on.

“2020 I feel even the management felt what kind of year I was having due to COVID-19, due to quarantine and extended quarantine. It was the confidence of staying with CSK for an year or two at least that helped me a lot and go out there and play my expressive game,” said Gaikwad in the video.

CSK’s backing paid off big time as Ruturaj was the Orange Cap winner for most runs in the title-winning 2021 season, scoring 635 runs at an average of 45.35 and a strike rate of over 136, with a century and four fifties.

Having played for CSK since the beginning of his IPL career in 2020, Ruturaj has made 1,797 runs in 52 matches at an average of 39.07, with a century and 14 fifties. His best score is 101*. His runs have come at a strike rate of over 135.

Ruturaj said that he sees his journey in the youngsters of the team.

“My first thing is to go and confront them. Even if they are not playing, there are things you could learn and take back home. It is upon you to how to take things. There are two ways of taking things, either negative or positive ways,” said the batter.

The 27-year-old said that he tries to help youngsters and keep them in a great frame of mind.

“I am trying to help younger players who are not able to get games, make sure they are in good and happy space and do not feel frustrated. I also remind them about myself and how my journey was,” concluded the batter.

IPL 2024: With Ruturaj Gaikwad At Helm, CSK Eye Strong Start Against RCB

The high-stakes match between cross-city rivals Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday will not only usher in IPL 2024 but also a new dawn for the defending champions with iconic MS Dhoni handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Dhoni is expected to retire at the end of this season and it seems the unanticipated move, just a day before the start of new season, has been taken for a smooth transition. But beyond the emotional whirlpool that surrounds Dhoni handing over captaincy to Gaikwad, CSK and RCB will have to find some early answers to some deep questions as they attempt to enter a rarefied territory.

The Super Kings are five-time champions, and a sixth title will put them in a space where no team has entered so far, not even Mumbai Indians, who also have five IPL trophies.

On the other hand, the Royal Challengers, who recently grabbed their maiden title through Women’s Premier League, will be eager to add a first IPL title to their shelf.

However, they have their own challenges to master.

The Super Kings have been the torch-bearers of success in the IPL under Dhoni, whose IPL career has reached its final chapter.

While his cricketing brain is still immune to advancing years, the passing summers have caught up with his reflexes as a batsman.

But those little scratches on the CSK machine do not make the task of RCB any easier. To understand it better, RCB have not beaten CSK at this venue since 2008.

Skipper Faf du Plessis and star batter Virat Kohli, who is returning to competitive cricket after a two-month break, will once again have to shoulder the batting responsibility.

They are set to open together, but this time the addition of Cameron Green might act as a protection plan if one of them or both of them fail to get going. Green can also chip in as a bowler.

Then there is always Glenn Maxwell, whose high-return outings in last year’s World Cup might not have been forgotten.
