India all-rounder Shivam Dube — who was initially struggling with his form in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and Caribbean — said that coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma had constantly backed him and their faith in his abilities has helped him to stay focused. The big-hitter, Dube did not have much impact with the bat in the T20 showpiece, scoring 13 runs in eight matches with the highest score 34. But, he proved his worth when it needed the most. His 27 off 16 balls cameo in the summit clash turned out to be vital in India’s title triumph.

In the final against South Africa, Dube came in to bat when India was in trouble at 103-4 after 13.3 overs. Coming in under pressure, the 31-year-old joined Virat Kohli and forged a crucial 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket to stabilise the innings.

“The World Cup journey taught me a lot. The final was a crucial moment, and I am glad I could contribute to the team’s efforts. Every match in the T20 World Cup was a learning experience, and the support from my teammates and fans kept me motivated. In the end, it’s about giving your best for the team and making every opportunity count,” Dube told IANS.

Despite his struggles with form, Dube remained in the playing XI throughout the tournament. He attributed this to the unwavering support of captain Rohit and coach Dravid, which has strengthened his resolve to improve and contribute to the team’s future success.

“It was both challenging and motivating. It was a test of my mental strength and perseverance. The unwavering support from our captain and coach was incredible. They constantly backed me, encouraging me to stay positive and keep working hard. Their faith in my abilities and their guidance helped me stay focused and believe in myself. This experience has made me stronger and more determined to improve and contribute to the team’s success in the future,” said Dube.

After the T20 World Cup, Dube featured in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, where he bagged the Player of the Match honour for his 12-ball 26 in the final match of the series.

Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan knows how to win the hearts of people. The co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders was on cloud nine after his team beat SunRisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final to lift a third IPL trophy. KKR first bowled out SRH for a paltry total of 113 and then chased down the target in 10.3 overs at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Sunday. After the game, the entire KKR management and team found no bounds to their joy and they celebrated the victory with utmost happiness.

Amid that moment too, Shah Rukh didn’t forget to make the Chennai crowd happy and he did so by chanting “CSK, CSK” with them. It is worth noting that the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the final of IPL 2024 took place, is the home stadium for five-time champions Chennai Super Kings. The side failed to made it to the playoffs this season after ending at the fifth spot in points table but SRK made sure its fans had a good time there even during KKR’s victory.

Watch Shah Rukh’s gesture here –

“Absolutely comprehensive. This is what we demanded from the team and every individual. They stood up to the right occasion and the feeling is hard to express,” said KKR captain Shreyas Iyer after the game.

KKR first bagged the title in 2012 before winning it again in 2014. Then a long trophy drought followed which was put to an end this season.

“It (wait) was so long, longer than the match. We played like invincibles throughout the season. There’s so much to cherish right now. It is pleasing, the performance has been flawless throughout. I am running out of words right now. We have been tremendous from game one, we stepped up today,” said Iyer.

SRH had a superb IPL 2024 but their batters failed to replicate that form in Qualifier 1 and final. Earlier, KKR had advanced to the final after beating SRH by 8 wickets in Qualifier 1.

“All we demanded from ourselves was to back each other whatever the situation is. The game could have either way. They have been playing phenomenal cricket  – SRH – throughout the season. We were lucky to bowl first and every situation went in our favour,” Iyer added.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar did the star turn with a sensational final over as Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off a heist, stunning Rajasthan Royals by just one run in a last-ball thriller to keep their IPL playoff hopes alive on Thursday. Needing two to win off the last delivery, Bhuvneshwar (3/41) trapped Rovman Powell (27) with a full toss to leave RR stranded at 200 for seven while chasing a target of 202. The win helped Sunrisers Hyderbad rise to the fourth spot in the table with 12 points from 10 games. Chennai Super Kings, meanwhile, slipped to the fifth spot with 10 points in as many games. Rest of the points table remained unchanged.

Here is the updated points table:

Ruturaj Gaikwad continues to hold the Orange Cap with 509 runs from 10 matches while T Natarajan surpassed Jasprit Bumrah in the list of highest wicket-takers to become the owner of the Purple Cap.

Opting to bat, Nitish Reddy (76 not out) and Travis Head (58) produced explosive fifties, while Heinrich Klassen made an unbeaten 19-ball 42 to power Sunrisers Hyderabad to 201 for three.

Things were looking up when Bhuvneshwar removed Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson for ducks in the opening over to leave RR at 1 for 2.

However, youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal (67) and Riyan Parag (77) came up with counterattacking fifties on way to a massive 134-run partnership to lay the foundation of the runchase.

But once the duo was back in the hut, Shimron Hetmyar (13) hit a four and a six as it seemed like a regulation chase but T Natarajan got rid off Hetmyar, who perished at long-on and then skipper Pat Cummins removed Dhruv Jurel, who was caught at deep square leg in the 19th over.

The sudden loss of wickets gave SRH hope of a turnaround but Powell produced a six in the last ball of the 19th over to bring the equation down to 13 off six balls.

The West Indian kept a calm head to bring it down to 2 off the last ball but Bhuvneshwar denied him the glory.

Following the win, SRH snapped their two-game losing streak and moved to the fourth spot with 12 points, same as Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, while RR stayed at the top with 16 points.

Chasing the total, Jaiswal and Parag were dropped early in their innings and they capitalised on the reprieves to script a quick recovery.

Parag broke the shackles in third over when he carted Bhuvneshwar for two fours and a six. Jaiswal then blasted Marco Jansen for two boundaries after Cummins spilled a straight forward catch.

Parag, who was dropped on 24 by Abhishek Sharma, hammered Cummins for another maximum, before carting Jansen for two more fours.

Cummins finally introduced spin into the attack but Jaiswal smashed Shahbaz Ahmed for a four to complete his fifty. Three balls later, Parag produced a reverse sweep four to reach his milestone in 32 balls.

Jaiwal then played a T Natarajan delivery onto the stumps, while two overs later Parag was holed out at long-on.

Earlier, Head forged a 96-run stand off 57 balls for the third wicket with Nitish, who also added another 70 off 32 balls with Klassen to take SRH across the 200-mark for the fifth time this season.

Head, who was dropped by Parag in the first ball of the innings, hit six fours and three sixes, while Nitish smashed eight maximums and three fours during his brutal assault.

Playing his 300th game, Yuzvendra Chahal, who has been picked for the T20 World Cup, was on the firing line as he conceded 62 in his quota of four overs.

Avesh Khan (2/39) produced the first breakthrough, having Abhishek (12) caught at deep midwicket. Sandeep Sharma (1/31) then claimed a first-ball wicket, removing Anmolpreet Singh (5) as SRH scored 37 for 2 in the powerplay, their lowest this IPL.

The spin duo of Chahal and R Ashwin (0/36), however, disappointed as the batters milked them for runs to set SRH on the road to recovery.

Chahal had a horrible night as Head smashed him for two sixes and a four during an 18-run over after he came on to bowl immediately following the powerplay.

The leg-spinner was then taken apart by Nitish, who plundered him for two sixes and two fours to accumulate 21 runs.

Nitish, who also clobbered Ashwin and Avesh for two maximums, then sent Sandeep sailing over extra cover, while Head pulled Avesh for another six in the 15th over.

The Australian, however, played the pacer onto his middle stump as SRH slipped to 131/3.

New man Klassen then joined the party, sending Chahal into the orbit with back-to-back sixes. When Trent Boult was back, Klassen picked him for two fours, while blasting another six off Sandeep.

RCB Can Still Qualify For IPL 2024 Playoffs. Here’s How” »

]]>

Halfway through Indian Premier League 2024, and one of the most-talked-about franchises Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are reeling at the bottom of the points table with only two points and a poor Net Run Rate (NRR) of -1.046. After losing seven out of their eight matches, RCB can still qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. They have had a forgettable campaign this season with their bowling unit failing on multiple occasions despite some contributions from the likes of Virat Kohli, Dinesh Karthik, and skipper Faf du Plessis with the bat.

Yet, all is not over for RCB, who can still make it to the top four albeit it is mostly a very unlikely outside chance. Let’s have a look at all the possible permutations and combinations for RCB’s qualification for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

IPL 2024 points table after 39 matches

RCB, as their head coach Andy Flower pointed out, need to treat every upcoming game as a knockout. They need to win their next six matches to make sure they get to 14 points at the very least.

RCB’s next six fixtures

The basic qualification scenario for RCB would be winning all six of their remaining matches with a healthy margin to repair their poor NRR – against SRH, GT (twice), PBKS, DC, and CSK. That will give them 12 points and take them to 14 overall in the standings.

That said, even 14 points might not prove to be enough if they are tied with one or more teams in the standings with the same amount of points as their NRR has taken a severe beating already.

Permutations and Combinations

However, for RCB to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, the simple math is to back the Top Three (RR, KKR, and SRH) to win as many games as possible while the next six sides above them (LSG, CSK, GT, MI, DC, PBKS) lose just as many so that RCB can finish above them in the standings. Here are a few of the possible ways in which this can be achieved.

– PBKS cannot win more than four out of their remaining six league games.

– DC and MI should win no more than three of their remaining six league games.

– CSK and GT should win no more than two of their remaining six league games.

– LSG should win no more than one of their remaining six league games.

– Lastly, KKR and SRH should win more than one of their remaining seven league games.

However, this still doesn’t guarantee a spot for RCB in the playoffs since they have the second-worst NRR in the league at the moment. To sum up, RCB must hope that all the above permutations go their way with the six teams above them suffering heavy defeats while Royal Challengers themselves must earn handsome wins. Should all of the above transpire and RCB win all their remaining games, below is how the IPL 2024 table would look.

IPL 2024 final points table as per the above equation

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

As per the above equation, RCB can not only qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs but do that with a four-point buffer. They can even afford to lose a game, but that said there’s a lot of ifs and buts that RCB must navigate, meaning that their qualification for the IPL 2024 playoffs depends on nothing less than a minor miracle.

Virat Kohli batted out the innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru with his second straight Indian Premier League half-century on Friday but Kolkata Knight Riders still cruised to a seven-wicket victory. Chasing the home side’s 182-6, Kolkata reached their target with 19 balls to spare when skipper Shreyas Iyer hit an unruffled six off Mayank Dagar. Their chase was off to a roaring start with Phil Salt (30) and all-rounder Sunil Narine (47) putting on 86 for the visitors, earning fulsome praise from Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis.

After the victory, KKR moved two spots in the points table to take the second position. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals slipped to the third position while SunRisers Hyderabad also got down by a spot to fourth. Chennai Super Kings remained at the top spot.

The position of RCB – 6th – however remained unchanged in the points table.

Here is updated IPL 2024 points table:

Narine hit five sixes in his 22-ball knock before Dagar bowled him in the seventh, with Salt following in the next over when he was caught at deep square leg.

Venkatesh Iyer made 50 to keep up the momentum before he was caught by Kohli while Shreyas saw out the innings with his 39.

Kohli notched up 83 and made his 50 off 36 balls, throwing a thumbs-up to the jubilant home crowd, and his knock made him the leading tournament run-scorer since the season began last week.

But a lack of able partners left Bengaluru’s innings a one-man show.

Du Plessis was out for eight at the end of the second over when he scooped a perplexing delivery from Harshit Rana straight into the arms of Mitchell Starc.

Cameron Green was the next top-scorer at 33 but was sent back after when he missed a lightning delivery from Andre Russell crashed off his back pad and into the stumps.

Glenn Maxwell survived two easy catches fumbled by Ramandeep Singh and Narine in consecutive overs.

But Narine had his revenge soon afterwards when he sent a bouncer to Maxwell that was powered to deep point and into the arms of Rinku Singh, who kissed the ball in triumph.

Maxwell finished with 28 from 19 balls while Kohli survived a close run out later that over when a replay showed his sliding dive had put him over the crease in time.

Dinesh Karthik made 20 before being run out by Salt on the last ball with Andre Russell pick of the Kolkata bowlers at 2-29.

Overwhelmed by emotion and filled with gratitude at being grandly feted for hitting the 500-wicket mark in Tests, Ravichandaran Ashwin on Saturday recalled the one man he would forever be “indebted to” for showing faith in a “nobody” 13 years ago — his first IPL and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. With 516 scalps in 100 Tests, Ashwin is a bonafide superstar in Indian cricket, just second behind the great Anil Kumble in the list of top Indian wicket-takers in the five-day format.

But it was not the case back in 2008 when he was roped in as a local spinner by Chennai Super Kings. He did not get a game that year as the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan led their spin attack.

Dhoni flung the new ball to Ashwin in the 2011 IPL final against Royal Challengers Bangalore and the then rookie off-spinner made an impact in the fourth ball itself, dismissing an in-form Chris Gayle.

The same year he made his India debut under Dhoni, picking up the player of the match honours in the game against the West Indies in Delhi.

“In 2008 I met all the greats (in CSK dressing room) Mathew Hayden and MS Dhoni. I sat through (IPL) 2008. I was a nobody then, where am I to play in a team that had Muttiah Muralitharan,” said Ashwin, who was felicitated by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association in a grand ceremony for his rare achievements, in a dipped-in-emotion voice.

“I am indebted to Dhoni for the rest of my life for what he gave me. He gave me an opportunity with the new ball to go head on with Chris Gayle and 17 years later Anil bhai would be talking about the same episode,” he fondly recalled.

That magical Chepauk night for Chennai Super Kings was just a beginning for Ashwin. With several current and former stars paying tributes to him, Ashwin understandably felt overwhelmed.

“I don’t generally search for words to express how I feel. I am truly humbled and grateful to be here,” he quipped.

The 37-year-old Chennai man is among the finest thinkers of the game and he has found a way to constantly reinvent himself, resulting in a bagful of wickets in the longest format.

He described himself as argumentative but only in pursuit of new perspectives.

“Anil bhai and Rahul (Dravid) bhai briefly mentioned that it is very tough to win an argument with me. It is true because I believe argument is one of the greatest pathways to excellence.

“Argument is never with the person. It is always with the true learning that comes at the end of it,” he said as Kumble watched on from the stage.

Ashwin also thanked a host of Tamil Nadu greats, who were in attendance, including his first First-Class captain S Badrinath and former batter S Sharath, who is now an India selector.

Ashwin, who is especially lethal against the left-handers, recalled how Sharath helped him become a better bowler against the southpaws.

“A lot of people spoke about how I tormented left-handers day in and day out. My first tryst with left handers, Mr S Sharath is sitting in the front. Someone told me if you are that good an off-spinner try and get this man out.

“I did get him out once, caught at slip and I played several more games with Sharath, he never got out to me again. That’s the quality of the batter he was. I bowled to him a lot and hence became a far better bowler to the left-handers.

Such is Ashwin’s commitment to Tamil Nadu and club cricket that till date he makes himself available for domestic events when he is not on national duty.

“This place has given me so much that I want to keep coming back here. People keep asking why do you want to go back.

“Tomorrow, I might not be alive but my soul will be hanging around this place. This is what this place means to me,” added Ashwin.

MS Dhoni is one of the greatest captains cricket has ever seen. He is the only skipper to win all the major white-ball International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments. He led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup title in 2007 before helping the side win the 2011 Cricket World Cup. In 2013, Dhoni-led India won the Champions Trophy. Besides being one the best captains, the Ranchi-born is also a great wicketkeeper-batter. Dhoni’s tactical acumen has also impressed one and all. While everybody knows Dhoni as once in a generation cricketer, hardly has anyone found him talking about relationships. This is why the recent video of the player is really special.

During a recent interaction, Dhoni offered some relationship advice to the bachelors and his statement left everyone in splits.

“Bachelors, jinki girlfriend hai unka ek misconception hota hai jo ki main clear karna chahunga by ending this answer. Yeh mat sochna ki meri wali alag hai (Bachelors who have girlfriend have a misconception that I want to clear. Don’t think that your girlfriend is different),” said Dhoni as the audience could not control their laughter.

Watch it here:

During the interaction, Dhoni also revealed that he is doing well after the knee surgery he went through in early June this year. He added that the doctor told him that he would be feeling “much better” by the end of the year.

The news comes out as a big boost for the Dhoni fans, who are hopeful of the wicketkeeper-batter playing at least one more IPL season before bidding adieu to the game of cricket as a player.

The 42-year-old made his last appearance for India against New Zealand in the 2019 ICC World Cup semi-final in Manchester on July 10, 2019.

In IPL 2023, Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings to a record-equalling fifth title.
