Inadequate water, congestion on route mars Wipro Bengaluru Marathon

Organisational lapses marred the 13th edition of the Wipro Bengaluru Marathon here on Sunday, with several runners complaining of inadequate water supply and poor crowd management.

Participants said water was unavailable at some stations, while congestion caused by runners from different categories affected the timings.

Organised by NEB Sports, the event attracted around 45,000 participants across four disciplines — Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K.

Ekta Sirohi, who ran the half-marathon, said, “After around the 10-km mark, there was no water available. All the water stations were empty.”

Another participant said some well-wishers who had gathered along the route came to the runners’ aid by purchasing water bottles from nearby shops and distributing them.

There were also complaints about congestion at around the 18km mark, where runners from the Full Marathon and Half Marathon began to merge with those taking part in the 10K and 5K.

“Many of the 5K runners were walking at this stage. On the other hand, we came in at a good speed and could not get past them,” a half-marathon runner said.

NEB Sports CMD Nagaraj Adiga acknowledged the lapses and said the organisers would take the runners’ feedback into account.

“In keeping with our green principles, we served water in jars and reusable cups, not bottles. There was a delay in refilling these jars in one section of the route,” Adiga told The Hindu.

“We are considering distributing water bottles all along the route from the next edition onwards,” he said.

Adiga added that the organisers were considering holding the 10K and 5K events a day before the Full Marathon and Half Marathon in future. This, he said, would help prevent the different categories from merging on the route.

“We want to ensure that every single participant has a good experience. Our team will analyse all feedback and make the necessary improvements,” Adiga said.

The results (winners): Full marathon: Elite men: Bugatha Srinu (02:22:53). Elite women: Bhagirathi (03:00:18).

Half marathon: Men: Ankit Gupta (01:09:12). Women: Sugandha Sharma (01:34:55).

A fresh wave of attacks by jihadist fighters in central Mali killed dozens of people, local and security sources said Saturday (May 9, 2026).

Friday’s (May 8, 2026) attacks were claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), who had already killed at least 30 people in attacks on villages on Wednesday (May 6, 2026).

One local official said the latest attacks by the armed groups had brought the toll to more than 70 in recent days.

Another local official put the death toll at 80.

“Our hearts are bleeding,” one local youth leader said, accusing nearby army detachments of doing nothing to help, despite multiple calls.

One security source described the situation in the region as “worrying”. “JNIM is targeting villages that refused to sign local agreements,” the source added.

The latest attacks come after JNIM and the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) carried out an unprecedented assault against the ruling junta in Mali last month.

Since then, Mali’s security situation has become critical, with several areas in the north now controlled by armed groups.

Storm Bert Strikes UK And Ireland, Brings Extreme Flooding And Travel Chaos

Storm Bert has wreaked havoc in parts of Ireland and Britain, causing severe flooding and widespread disruption. Dramatic events occurred in Donegal as rushing waters caused streets like Bridge Street to become rivers, raising worries about public safety.

Translink, a public transport company in Northern Ireland, warned customers to prepare for “severe disruption” and look for alternate travel alternatives as a result of the massive damage to Northern Ireland’s railway infrastructure. The storm’s effects highlight the region’s continued vulnerability to severe weather.

Storm Bert left at least 60,000 properties in Ireland without power and closed roads and some ferry and train routes on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Media footage showed flooding in the west of Ireland, while floods prompted rail closures in Northern Ireland and snow impacted travel across Britain.

The heaviest snow hit Scotland and parts of northern and central England, with dozens of flood alerts in place.

The UK Met Office issued warnings for snow and ice for those regions, warning there was a “good chance some rural communities could be cut off.”.

Scottish hills could see up to 40 centimetres (16 inches) of snow, while winds approaching 70 miles (113 kilometres) per hour were recorded in parts of Britain.

Ferry operator DFDS cancelled services on some routes until Monday, with sailings from Newhaven and Dover in southern England to Dieppe and Calais in France severely affected.

Flights were disrupted at Newcastle airport due to heavy snow, with some flights diverted to Belfast and Edinburgh.

Met Eireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, had also issued a yellow warning for “very strong winds and heavy rain.”

The worst impacted areas for power outages in Ireland were in western and northwestern counties, according to ESB Networks, which runs the country’s electricity system.

“Crews and contractors are deployed and restoring power in impacted areas where it is safe to do so,” it said.

More than 4,000 properties across Britain were without power by mid-Saturday-the majority in southwest England-with the National Grid operator saying power had been restored to “many homes and businesses.”
