Taylor Fritz reached the ATP Finals title decider on Saturday by beating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/3) at the season-ending event in Turin. Fritz will face either world number one Jannik Sinner or Casper Ruud in Sunday’s showdown where he will bid to become the first American since Pete Sampras in 1999 to claim the title. James Blake, in 2006, was the last US man to make the final. Fritz could yet have the chance to gain revenge on Sinner for being beaten in the US Open final following a gruelling match in northern Italy.

Both players had chances to take control in a topsy-turvy third set, but failed to capitalise on a host of break points.

But Fritz held his nerve better in the tie-break to claim a spot in the final.

Home hope Sinner will be backed by a passionate crowd in the day’s main event, the Italian aiming for his first Finals title after an exceptional year in which he won seven tournaments, including his first Grand Slam victories at the Australian and US Opens.

He lost last year’s final to Novak Djokovic, who pulled out of the tournament injured this time around and he entered the 2024 event already assured of becoming the first Italian to top the ATP end-of-year rankings.

However, he has been dogged by controversy after twice testing positive for traces of the steroid clostebol in March.

He was initially cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency but at the end of September the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed, seeking a ban of up to two years.

Alexander Zverev opened his campaign at the ATP Finals in Turin on Monday evening by dispatching Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4 in their round-robin opener. In the afternoon match, Casper Ruud romped through the opening set before fighting back from 5-2 behind in the second to beat an out-sorts Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 7-5. Germany’s Zverev had last faced Russian Rublev at the same stage of the finals in 2023 and won by the same score. Zverev, a two-time winner of this event in 2018 and 2021, moved to second in the John Newcombe group, behind Norway’s Ruud.

The 27-year-old Zverev, the recent winner of the Paris Masters 1000, has climbed back to No.2 in the world this season. After an injury-hit 2022 season he had briefly dropped out of the top 25 in 2023.

“I was never sure I was going to get back to this level,” Zverev said on the court in Turin. “Second year in a row for me here. I still want to get better. I still want to improve on a few things. We’ll see how next year goes.”

Rublev held to love in his first three service games. He won a 13th straight point on serve to open the crucial seventh game, but Zverev then won the next four to break to 15.

Zverev did not allow a break point against his serve all match and converted immediately both times he had the chance.

“I thought it was a very solid match from my end,” said Zverev.

“Andrey is an incredible player, but everyone who plays here is an unbelievable player.

“Against anyone here, you have to play your best to have a chance, you have to be solid,  mentally strong. I feel like I did that today, I felt like I used my chances quite well and I’m obviously happy with this win.”

Ailing Alcaraz beaten

Earlier Alcaraz, the world number three got off to a shaky start to his maiden ATP Finals, making 34 unforced errors in an uncharacteristically errant display.

“I’m tired. I’m tired mentally,” said Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon titles earlier this year.

“Obviously a lot of matches, really tight schedule, really demanding year with not too many days off, not too many periods for you could rest.

“Some players deal with it better than others.”

Alcaraz said he had struggled with sickness and adapting to the indoor surface.

“A few days before coming here, I got sick at home,” said the Spaniard.

“I don’t like to sound like I’m making excuses but today I didn’t feel well on court.

“It doesn’t matter the times I beat Casper. I have no experience playing on indoor courts. I have to be better on this part of the year that we play on indoor courts.”

It was Ruud’s first victory over 21-year-old Alcaraz in their five career meetings.

“I knew he was dealing with a bit of a cold. I saw him sniffling in the back area and with a tissue for his nose, so that’s a sign that maybe physically he won’t be necessarily at 100 percent. Of course, that is sad, and not good for him, but at the same time it is part of the game.”

The Norwegian had suffered seven defeats in his eight matches coming into this tournament.

“This part of the season has not been good for me but hopefully I’ve saved some wins for this week and I’ve started well,” said Ruud, the 2022 finals runner-up

Norway’s Casper Ruud eased to a straight-sets victory over Carlos Alcaraz on Monday as the Spanish star’s bid for a maiden ATP Finals title got off to a poor start. Ruud romped through the opening set before fighting back from 5-2 behind in the second to win 6-1, 7-5 in Turin. World number three Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon titles earlier this year, made 34 unforced errors in an uncharacteristically errant display. It was Ruud’s first victory over Alcaraz in their five career meetings.

“I had two good times in Turin before… This part of the season has not been good for me but hopefully I’ve saved some wins for this week and I’ve started well,” said 2022 runner-up Ruud, who had suffered seven defeats in eight matches before this tournament.

Ruud will head into his second match in the John Newcombe group against Andrey Rublev on Wednesday already well-placed to reach the semi-finals for the third time in as many appearances at the year-end event.

Alcaraz could be eliminated if he loses to second-ranked Alexander Zverev, who faces Rublev in his opener later on Monday.

Third seed Alcaraz quickly slipped 4-1 down, giving up his serve in the fourth game before seeing three break points come and go in the next.

Ruud stretched a double-break in front as Alcaraz fired a loose forehand wide and wrapped up the opening set in just 36 minutes with a hold to love.

The four-time Grand Slam champion improved early in the second set, though, bringing up his sixth break point of the match with a trademark forehand winner.

He took the opportunity with a delicate volley and then moved into a 5-2 lead with a clinical hold.

But Ruud dug deep to force Alcaraz to serve for the set before breaking back en route to levelling the set.

The errors suddenly started to flow again from Alcaraz’s racquet and a wild forehand followed by an excellent Ruud return gave the sixth seed the chance to serve for the match.

Ruud closed it out in style on his third match point with an ace, completing a run of five straight games.

Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud saved a match point in the deciding set tie-break to reach the semi-finals of the doubles in Bastad on Wednesday, hours after the Norwegian was knocked out of the singles. Nadal and Ruud squeezed past France’s Theo Arribage and Roman Safiullin of Russia 6-4, 3-6, 12/10 to advance to the last four, winning the final three points of the match after being on the brink of defeat. “I think we had some fun. It was an emotional match at the end, a good level of tennis against two good players,” said Nadal, who is also competing in the singles tournament. “We enjoy it, the crowd was amazing. Full crowd in a doubles match, that’s fantastic. Just enjoying every single day here.”

While Nadal and Ruud wait to discover their semi-final opponents, the Spaniard will be back in action on Thursday against Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the round of 16 in the singles.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion returned to competition for the first time this week since his early French Open exit.

He will hope to avoid the same fate as Ruud, whose Olympic preparations took a hit when he lost 6-3, 6-3 to Thiago Monteiro in the second round earlier on Wednesday.

Ruud, a two-time French Open runner-up, was a finalist in Sweden last year. He won the tournament in 2021.

World number 121 Thiago Tirante of Argentina pulled off the biggest win of his career as he defeated top seed and defending champion Andrey Rublev 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-4.

Rafael Nadal returned to competition for the first time since his early French Open exit on Monday, teaming up with Casper Ruud for a doubles win in Bastad. It was Nadal’s first match since the 38-year-old fell to Alexander Zverev in the opening round at Roland Garros on May 27 as he prepares for the Paris Olympics. The Spaniard and Ruud, 25, won 6-1, 6-4 in the rain-interrupted clay-court match against second seeds Guido Andreozzi of Argentina and Miguel Reyes-Varela of Mexico.

Wild card entries Nadal and Ruud, who trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, looked at home on the Swedish clay, racing through the first set with two breaks.

Play was suspended at 3-3 in the second due to rain and briefly a second time before Nadal and Ruud, saw out the match in 79 minutes.

“We played quite well for it being the first time that we played together,” said Nadal.

“And yeah, happy to be back here after almost 20 years. I have great memories of this place from 2003, 2004, 2005. I am enjoying this week and hopefully we can keep going.”

Nadal lifted the singles title in Bastad as a 19-year-old in 2005.

This month he skipped Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics which will be played at Roland Garros where he won 14 French Open titles.

In Paris, Nadal plans to compete in the singles and doubles with Carlos Alcaraz, winner of the Wimbledon tournament on Sunday.

“It was an amazing day for Spanish sport,” said Nadal of Alcaraz’s win and Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.

“The Spanish team played an amazing Euro Cup since the first day to the last. We are very proud, all the country, about what they did. I was a very happy day yesterday too, with Carlos winning Wimbledon.”

The 22-time Grand Slam champion is also playing in the singles where he will take on Leo Borg, the 21-year-old son of the long-retired former world number one Bjorn Borg, now 68.

Ruud added: “He did well and we played good doubles and it was a lot of fun to share the court with Rafa as always.

“I’m used to it more than Rafa, being from Norway,” he said of the rain delays before joking about Nadal’s age.

“And he’s getting old so I’m not sure how the body feels when he has to stop and start all the time.”

Borg, currently ranked 467 in the world, lost his doubles match on Monday.

Carlos Alcaraz raced into the Wimbledon third round on Wednesday to set up a mouth-watering duel with fellow crowd-pleaser Frances Tiafoe as Japanese superstar Naomi Osaka returned to Centre Court for the first time in five years. Alcaraz defeated Australia’s world number 69 Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 6-2 on the back of 42 winners. The third-seeded Spaniard’s only moments of concern came in the first set when he let slip a 5-2 lead and found himself 5-6 down with Vukic serving for the opener.

However, the three-time major winner steadied the ship to race away to victory against a player who got the better of him in qualifying at the 2020 French Open.

Alcaraz next faces Tiafoe, the American player he defeated in five sets in the semi-finals of the 2022 US Open on his way to his first Grand Slam triumph.

“I’m going for him,” said Alcaraz, who is bidding to become just the sixth man after Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles back to back.

“I’m ready to play a really high level of tennis and hopefully take him.”

Tiafoe made the third round by seeing off Borna Coric in straight sets.

‘Love and hate’

Eccentric Fabio Fognini of Italy needed a clutch of match points to knock out eighth-seeded Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3.

The 37-year-old Fognini, sporting bleach-blond hair, twice served for the match from 5-2 up in the third set before sealing victory over the three-time Grand Slam runner-up in the fourth set.

“It just shows why I love and hate this sport,” said Fognini.

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, came back from dropping the first set and facing two set points in the second to see off Alexandre Muller of France 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 7-5.

World number two and US Open champion Coco Gauff cruised into the third round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni.

“I’m happy with the way I played, could have been cleaner on some points,” said Gauff, who broke her 19-year-old opponent five times.

The American, who made her career breakthrough at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old qualifier in 2019, goes on to face British qualifier Sonay Kartal, the world number 298.

The last time four-time major winner Osaka appeared on Centre Court was in 2019 when she was second seed but was dumped out in the first round by Yulia Putintseva.

Five years on, she is ranked at 113 having only returned to the tour in January after giving birth to daughter Shai in July last year.

All-Italian fight

Osaka’s win over Diane Parry in the first round was her first at Wimbledon since 2018.

The Japanese star takes on America’s 17th-ranked Emma Navarro, who arrived in London on the back of a semi-final run at the Bad Homburg grass-court tournament.

Later Wednesday, world number one Jannik Sinner will take on Italian compatriot and former runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

Italian men’s tennis has rarely been stronger, with the country boasting five players in the top 50 while the nation swept to Davis Cup glory last season.

Ten Italian men started the singles tournament this year at Wimbledon.

Sinner was the first Italian man to capture a Grand Slam title with his victory at the Australian Open in January and was also the first from his country to become world number one.

“I feel like in Italy we have so many tournaments, starting with juniors, then the Futures and Challengers,” said 22-year-old Sinner.

“We have big, big ATP tournaments there. We have good facilities and great coaches.”

Berrettini can boast his own breakthrough Italian moment when he was the first to make a Wimbledon men’s final in 2021.

Sinner made the semi-finals at the All England Club last year where he was defeated by Djokovic.

There could be a memorable day for Chinese tennis with teenager Shang Juncheng taking on 10th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov and 32nd seed Zhang Zhizhen facing Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

Until Monday, no Chinese man had won a match at Wimbledon in the Open era.

Casper Ruud said he would love to think 2024 is finally his year at the French Open, but added that Novak Djokovic remained his favourite to win the tournament, which starts on Sunday. Twice a runner-up in Paris, Ruud heads to Roland-Garros on a high after winning the Geneva Open title for a third time — but said Djokovic, the world number one and defending champion, remained top of the pecking order, despite a shaky season so far. Norwegian Ruud, the world number seven, beat 44th-ranked Czech Tomas Machac 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday’s final to add to the Geneva trophies he won in 2021 and 2022.

Machac knocked out Djokovic in the Geneva semi-finals, with the 37-year-old Serb struggling to find his usual impeccable rhythm.

Ruud, 25, has lost in the last two French Open finals — including last year to Djokovic.

Asked if he thought this year could be the moment to go one better, Ruud said: “I would love to, and I would love to think that way, but I’m not really expecting that this year is the year I’m going to win it.

“It’s so open these days and of course to me, even though Novak has had maybe a tougher year than usual, I would still consider him the favourite. He’s arriving there with 24 Grand Slams in the bag.”

Rival contenders

Besides Rafael Nadal, who has won a record 14 French Open titles, Ruud said “many have been talking about” Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz for the title — while Alexander Zverev won in Rome and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo on the clay this year.

Ruud, who won Barcelona on the clay, will face Brazilian qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves in the first round at Roland-Garros.

Ruud said he was targeting getting through the opening rounds, and taking it from there.

“The goal, like any other Slam, is to reach the second week and from there, typically I’ve seen that things open up a little bit,” he said.

“Maybe you play someone who’s tired. If you’re physically ready for the second week of a Slam, a lot of good things might happen.”

Play ‘real matches’

The 28-man Geneva tournament serves as a warm-up before the French Open, the second of the year’s four Grand Slams.

Ruud certainly got some practice in for the rigours of five-set Grand Slam matches.

Rain delays meant he played two matches in one day on Saturday, first beating Italy’s in-form Flavio Cobolli 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) in a roller coaster semi-final before going on to defeat Machac.

“I wanted to build up some momentum for Paris and I think I’ve been able to do that and hopefully I can bring it on to Paris,” Ruud said.

“Physically it’s good preparation, and you look at all the other players in Paris, what do they do in training? They play matches. So why don’t you come here and play a real match instead of just practice matches?

“It’s been a great week in terms of winning and also building up the form and the physical aspects for Paris.”

Carlos Alcaraz sealed a spot in the men’s semi-finals of the China Open with a straight-sets victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud in Beijing on Monday. The world number two triumphed 6-4, 6-2 to set up a semi-final clash with either Jannik Sinner or Grigor Dimitrov. Alcaraz shook off an early break of serve to overpower the world number nine, eventually seizing an attritional first set with a 40-0 service game. He then took control, breaking twice without reply in set two before finally forcing Ruud to slice a backhand into the net. “To be able to win these kinds of matches the way I did gives you extra confidence in your game,” Alcaraz said at a post-match news conference.

“It was a really tough match and I had to find solutions… I had to increase my level but we had really good battles, good rallies.”

Third-ranked Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the semi-finals with an earlier 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over France’s Ugo Humbert.

An error-strewn first set saw a combined five breaks of serve but Medvedev edged ahead in the ninth game and finished it off with an ace.

Both men were more consistent in set two until the Russian, at deuce, hit back-to-back double faults to hand the crucial break to Humbert.

Medvedev finally tightened up in the decider, notching two quickfire breaks before seeing out the match on his serve.

The 27-year-old will battle it out with Germany’s Alexander Zverev for a place in the final.

Medvedev again attributed the see-saw victory to the match balls, which he has said fluff up too quickly and can lead to lengthy rallies.

“(On) any other normal hard court with normal balls, no chance I win the match like this. No chance I would lose my serve so much,” he said.

Zverev, ranked number 10, edged a tight encounter with Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-1, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3.

Top-ranked men’s player Novak Djokovic is not playing the China tournaments this season.

World number two Iga Swiatek defeated Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets in the first round of the women’s draw.

The Pole, who recently relinquished her hold on the number-one spot to Aryna Sabalenka, enjoyed considerable success at the net on her way to a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Swiatek will play France’s Varvara Gracheva in the second round.

“I feel like I was pretty patient. You have to be patient with her because she’s running for every ball,” the 22-year-old said after the match.

“I kind of wanted to just be solid and be intensive but not make too many mistakes with risking,” she said.

Teenage star Coco Gauff survived a minor scare on the way to a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova.

The US Open champion was 4-0 up but allowed Alexandrova to level before ripping a backhand winner down the line to break serve and take the first set.

She fared better in the second, picking up a break midway through and seeing out the match to seal a date with Petra Martic in round two.

“She was giving me a lot of errors, so I don’t think the 4-0 was completely (down to) my tennis,” Gauff told a post-match press briefing.

“Once I got to that point, I definitely started making more unforced errors,” she said.

“I was able to buckle down when I needed to, but obviously I think in these moments I want to do better at closing out those sets.”

World number seven Ons Jabeur beat American Ashlyn Krueger 6-3, 6-4 to set up a second-round match against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

Sabalenka knocked out former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin on Sunday to seal her spot in the second round.

The China Open is taking place for the first time since 2019 after Beijing abandoned its long-standing zero-Covid policy.
