Daniil Medvedev handed top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz his first loss of the year and advanced to the final at Indian Wells with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory Saturday.

The 11th-seeded Medvedev, from Russia, will face second-seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy. Sinner beat Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4.

Alcaraz had won 16 straight matches this year, including titles at the Australian Open and Qatar Open. But Medvedev ended the possibility of an Alcaraz vs. Sinner final. Medvedev had dropped his last four meetings against Alcaraz, including a loss in the Indian Wells final in 2024. This was Medvedev’s first victory over him since the U.S. Open semifinals in 2023.

Sinner made quick work of Zverev, beating him in 1 hour, 23 minutes. Sinner notched six aces against the fourth-seeded Zverev.

Zverev won his first eight points on serve. But Sinner broke Zverev in both the fifth and seventh games to secure the first set. Sinner now leads the head-to-head series against Zverev 7-4.

Neither Medvedev nor Sinner has dropped a set yet in this tournament. Sinner has won his last three matches against Medvedev, including in the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2024.

In the women’s doubles final, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova beat Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic 7-6 (4), 6-4. The victory marked Townsend’s first at Indian Wells and Siniakova’s second. Siniakova also won in 2023 alongside longtime partner Barbora Krejcikova.

In the men’s doubles final, Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Guinard topped Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Vacherot 7-6 (3), 6-3. In mixed doubles, Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli beat top-seeded Gabriela Dabrowski and Lloyd Glasspool 6-3 2-6, 10-7.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz swept past Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Indian Wells ATP Masters on Saturday (March 7, 2026) as Novak Djokovic battled back for a three-set victory over Kamil Majchrzak.

Spain’s Alcaraz was untroubled by the former world number three from Bulgaria, pushing his perfect 2026 match record to 13-0 in just 66 minutes.

Djokovic, a five-time Indian Wells champion who has struggled in recent years, had to grind for two hours and 12 minutes to subdue 57th ranked Kamil Majchrzak of Poland 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Alcaraz said he was wary of Dimitrov, but even in the swirling winds on Stadium Court he was in control, firing from the baseline with power and accuracy.

He barely broke a sweat and cracked plenty of smiles, saving the lone break point he faced in the second set and even getting a high-five from his opponent on a changeover.

“In general just really happy with the things that I’ve done today,” said the 22-year-old Spaniard, whose Australian Open triumph made him the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.

He added the Qatar Open title before heading Stateside to chase a third Indian Wells crown.

“I love being here so much, I think that’s why I’m just playing relaxed, playing calm, chilling,” he said.

Although he shares the record for most Indian Wells ATP titles with Swiss great Roger Federer, Djokovic has found the early going in California anything but relaxing in recent years.

That was true again on Saturday, but the 38-year-old Serb superstar — back on court for the first time since he fell to Alcaraz in the Australian Open final — managed to escape with a win.

Majchrzak grabbed two quick breaks in the opening set before Djokovic began to find his rhythm from the baseline and assert his superiority.

“Kamil is a very solid player,” Djokovic said. “He doesn’t have tremendous power, but he has every shot in the book and he was not afraid to come in and take the ball early.

“He played a tremendous first set. I kind of reset and started feeling the ball better,” Djokovic added after a match marked by extended, entertaining rallies that included a 40-shot exchange in the opening game of the third.

Majchrzak held in that game, but Djokovic broke him twice on the way to a 5-2 lead and was finally looking more relaxed when he closed it out with a backhand volley winner.

It was an especially satisfying win for Djokovic, who lost is opener last year to Dutch lucky loser Botic van de Zandshculp and fell to lucky loser Luca Nardi in the third round in 2024.

“It’s kind of hard to find my A-game, particularly at the beginning of the tournament,” he said. “So just glad to overcome a challenge.”

Draper rallies

Britain’s Jack Draper launched his title defense with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.

Draper halted Alcaraz’s bid for a rare Indian Wells three-peat in the semi-finals last year before beating Holger Rune in the final.

That victory launched his rise to fourth in the world, but he returned to California in rebuilding mode again after an arm injury forced him to cut short his 2025 season.

“To come out and play the level I’m playing after the injury I had, I am really proud of that,” said Draper, who made his return to the tour in Dubai last week having not played since his second-round withdrawal at the US Open.

In other matches, unseeded Brazilian Joao Fonseca saved two match points to take out 16th-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4.

Seventh-seeded former champion Taylor Fritz and 11th-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev were in action in the night session.

Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest man in history to complete a career Grand Slam after capturing the Australian Open 2026 title on Feb. 1, ending Novak Djokovic’s perfect record in Melbourne Park finals. The world no. 1 Spaniard overcame a slow start to defeat the 10-time champion 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

Serbia’s Djokovic, chasing an unprecedented 25th major crown, came out firing and took the opening set, but Alcaraz responded with relentless defense, electric court coverage and sustained pressure against his 38-year-old rival.

The 22-year-old Spaniard’s retrieval skills repeatedly turned Djokovic’s near-certain winners into extended rallies. When the final point was done, Alcaraz dropped his racket, collapsed onto his back and pressed his hands to his head in disbelief before greeting Djokovic at the net.

The Serbian star smiled as he congratulated him showing his sportsmanship despite a surely agonising defeat. Alcaraz then sprinted to celebrate with his coaches and later embraced his father and team in the stands.

Both players had survived draining five-set semifinals, yet produced a physically brutal contest lasting just over three hours. Alcaraz converted five of his 16 break‑point chances, while Djokovic managed two from six.

Djokovic’s path to a record-breaking 25th major has now been halted by Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner in nine consecutive Grand Slams. After beating Sinner in the semifinals, Djokovic was hoping to become the oldest Australian Open champion in the Open era.

At 22 years and 272 days, Alcaraz surpassed Don Budge — who completed his career Slam at 22 years and 363 days at the 1938 French Championships — as the youngest man to win all four major titles.

The Melbourne triumph gives Alcaraz his seventh Grand Slam trophy and his first Australian Open crown, adding to two titles each at Wimbledon, the French Open and the US Open.

Djokovic was the last men’s player to complete a career slam when he won four Grand Slam finals in-a-row from the 2015 Wimbledon title to the 2016 French Open championship.

Tennis legend Novak Djokovic will meet the titan of the new era Carlos Alcaraz in the 2026 Australian Open final on Sunday, Feb. 1. Hailed as the clash of two eras, the Djokovic-Alcaraz summit clash will be played at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

After playing two high-intense semi-finals on Friday, Jan. 30, the Serbian legend will be taking on the Spanish giant in what promises to be one of the biggest Australian Open finals ever.

Djokovic made it through after defeating two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-final bout. The legend, who is eyeing a landmark 25th Grand Slam and his 11th Australian Open title, will be hoping to give a befitting reminder of his great prowess on the court.

For Alcaraz, it will be yet another opportunity to stamp his authority and reinforce his status as the world number one. The 22-year-old strengthened his quest for a maiden Australian Open crown by winning against Alexander Zverev following a marathon fixture spanning 5 hours and 27 minutes.

The victory gave Alcaraz a place in the Australian Open final for the first time, bringing him close to his seventh major title. The Spanish superstar has also won 24 ATP championships.

The final could be a defining moment in both the tennis champions’ careers. While Djokovic would be keen to flex his greatness inside the court and prove to himself more than anyone that he is still the best, Alcaraz would be determined to etch his place in tennis history. He can become the youngest man to complete a Career Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic finally beat one of the two men who’ve been blocking his path to an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam singles title when he edged Jannik Sinner in five sets to reach the Australian Open final Friday.

To get that coveted No. 25, he’ll have to beat the other: Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz.

They’re both chasing history in Sunday’s championship decider, with Alcaraz striving to become the youngest man at 22 ever to complete a career Grand Slam.

“There’s always, for me, also for Carlos because of his age and everything he’s achieved, history is on the line for both of us,” Djokovic told reporters packed into a small room deep inside the stadium in a brief interview approaching 3 a.m. “Finals of a Grand Slam. There’s a lot at stake.”

The top-ranked Alcaraz came through his own grueling five-setter. He overcame cramps and a sore right leg to fend off No. 3 Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5 in a match that started in the warmth of the afternoon and, 5 hours, 27 minutes later, became the longest semifinal ever at the Australian Open.

That pushed the scheduled start of the Sinner-Djokovic semifinal back a couple of hours, and the 38-year-old Djokovic finally won 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 just after 1:30 a.m.

“It feels surreal,” Djokovic said of his 4-hour, 9-minute triumph. “Honestly, it feels like winning already tonight. I know I have to come back … and fight the No. 1 of the world. I just hope that I’ll have enough gas to stay toe-to-toe with him.

“For me, this is a win that almost equals winning a Grand Slam.”

Djokovic conceded he was lucky to even get to the semifinals. He narrowly missed hitting a ball girl with a reckless swipe in the third round to be almost defaulted from the tournament, got a walkover in the fourth round, and felt he was heading home in the quarterfinals when he trailed Lorenzo Musetti by two sets until the Italian retired with an injured right leg.

Djokovic hadn’t won a set since the third round but against Sinner, the two-time defending champion, Djokovic was at the peak of his attacking and defensive powers. He fended off 16 of the 18 breakpoints he faced and stifled Sinner’s opportunities. It ended a run of five losses to Sinner, and a run of four semifinal exits for Djokovic at the majors.

“Had many chances, couldn’t use them, and that’s the outcome,” Sinner said. “Yeah, it hurts, for sure.”

Alcaraz and Sinner have split the last eight major titles between them since Djokovic won his last title at the 2023 U.S. Open.

But nobody knows how to win more often at Melbourne Park than Djokovic. He has won all 10 times he’s contested the Australian Open final. He has been saying for months that Alcaraz and Sinner have been playing at a higher level than everyone else. He also said he never doubted he could rise to that level.

“I never stopped doubting. I never stopped believing in myself,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that doubted me … a lot of experts all of a sudden that wanted to retire me.

“I want to thank them all because they gave me strength. They gave me motivation to prove them wrong, which I have tonight.”

Final 4The top four seeds reached the men’s semifinals for just the fifth time and Day 13 was destined to produce some much-needed drama. The season-opening major had been a relatively slow burn until the back-to-back five-setters lasting a combined 9 hours, 36 minutes.

Alcaraz and Zverev, the 2025 runner-up, surpassed the 2009 classic between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco as the longest ever Australian Open semifinal.

Medical timeoutAlcaraz was as close as two points from victory in the third set but was hampered by pain in his upper right leg and his medical timeout became contentious.

He said initially it didn’t feel like cramping because the pain seemed to be just in one muscle, the right adductor, and he needed an assessment.

He endured the third and fourth sets and was behind in the fifth after dropping serve in the first game. He kept up the pressure but didn’t break back until Zverev was serving for the match. He then won the last four games.

“Physically we pushed each other to the limit today. We pushed our bodies to the limit,” Alcaraz said. “I rank this one in the top position of one of the best matches that I have ever won.”

BelieveAlcaraz admitted he was struggling but he kept “believing, believing, all the time.”

“I knew what I had to do. I had to put my heart into the match. I think I did it.”

Zverev was demonstrably upset about the time out in the third set, taking it up with a tournament supervisor. Later, he said that episode shouldn’t overshadow the contest.

“I don’t want to talk about this right now because this is one of the best battles there ever was in Australia,” he said. “It doesn’t deserve to be the topic now.”
