Jude Bellingham insisted Real Madrid would be ready for whoever they have to face in the Champions League play-offs and that the reigning champions are “starting to click” after their 3-0 win in Brest on Wednesday. Bellingham scored Real’s second goal in between a double strike from Rodrygo as the Spanish giants proved too strong for the French upstarts in Guingamp. It was a third straight win to finish the league phase of the Champions League for Real after they started with three defeats in their first five outings, and that poor start is what led to them coming 11th in the standings.

They finished a point outside the top eight places which offered direct qualification for the last 16, and therefore enter Friday’s draw for the extra play-off round.

They already know that they will face either Manchester City or Celtic in the play-offs in February, with the winners over two legs advancing to the last 16 in March.

“It was important to get the win and finish the group stage strong. I think we probably let ourselves down in a few of the games and that is the reason why we have ended up” in the play-offs, Bellingham told UEFA.com.

“No problem, we’ll try and face whatever obstacle comes with a better face and you can see that we are definitely starting to click as a team in the last few weeks.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won their last five matches in all competitions since a 5-2 pasting at the hands of Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia on January 12.

Rodrygo opened the scoring against Brest just before the half-hour mark for Real with a low shot across goalkeeper Marco Bizot and in off the far post, moments after the Brazilian had a header expertly saved.

Mbappe scoring run ends

The visitors were missing Vinicius Junior through suspension and Kylian Mbappe was not on scoring form, having previously netted eight times in the last five games.

But that didn’t matter, as Real survived seeing Brest’s Ludovic Ajorque have a goal disallowed for a tight offside just after half-time before they went 2-0 ahead on 56 minutes.

Bellingham, the player of the match, sparked a breakaway and then arrived in the box to finish off Lucas Vazquez’s low centre.

Rodrygo then scored again on 78 minutes, claiming a brace in a second straight Champions League game, after Mbappe’s shot was saved.

“I think we overlook who scores the goals and that kind of thing because we know that each game it will be someone else, whether it’s Rodrygo’s two and me one tonight, whether it’s Kylian with three the other day,” Bellingham added.

“Someone will always step up with a bit of individual brilliance and the rest of us will focus on the organisation of the team.

“That is maybe what we lacked in a few of the early group games but it seems to be getting better over the last few weeks.”

Real qualified from the league phase despite defeats against Lille, AC Milan and Liverpool, and Bellingham gave the new format a thumbs up overall.

“It has been nice playing more teams of a higher quality and a real mixed group of teams from all over Europe. It’s nice to have a bit more jeopardy,” he said.

Brest are also through to the play-off round after a memorable first ever European campaign which has seen them finish 18th in the table, above the likes of Juventus and Manchester City, despite losing their last two games.

They will play either French rivals Paris Saint-Germain or Benfica in the next round.

“We want to keep going, make even more history than we have already, and if we can continue to get results, why not,” said Bizot.

Carlo Ancelotti said Real Madrid “are improving but are yet to show their best” as his side bid to earn automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16 against Ligue 1 club Brest on Wednesday. The reigning champions of Europe are ensured of their place in at least the knockout play-off round as the league phase of the revamped Champions League wraps up with its final matchday this week. However, after suffering three defeats in their opening seven matches, 16th-placed Real are only in with an outside chance of securing a top eight finish and automatic progression to the last 16.

A faltering start to the defence of their Spanish and Champions League titles now seems to be behind Ancelotti’s charges after they have won nine of their last 10 outings in all competitions.

“I think the team are improving but are yet to show their best, even though we’re getting close,” Ancelotti said during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“The idea and the vision that we have for this team, I think it’s clear to everyone and the team have improved collectively, but also individually.

“That’s the case for Kylian Mbappe, but also for Rodrygo (Goes) or (Jude) Bellingham and all the other players. They’ve all worked very hard.

“Kylian is playing very well. I think he just needed a little time to improve athletically and adapt to his new environment… Now we’re taking full advantage of having Mbappe with us and the qualities he can bring to the team.”

Criticised for his performances at the start of the season following his long-awaited transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, France captain Mbappe has got among the goals as Madrid surged to the top of La Liga over the winter.

The 26-year-old has 21 goals in 31 matches for Real, eight of which have come in January.

Los Blancos sit only one point outside of the top eight but seven teams are currently between them and eighth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

One of these sides are Wednesday’s opposition Brest, who have impressed on their European debut, with four wins from seven so far.

“Brest have done an excellent job in this Champions League,” said Ancelotti.

“They have a point more than us… It’s no coincidence that they took 13 points in the first phase.

“They are a very good team who know how to take advantage of the qualities of their players,” added the veteran Italian.

‘Don’t stand a chance’

Brest are also assured of progression to the knock-outs, something their coach described as “difficult to imagine” when the Breton outfit got their campaign underway with a 2-1 win over Sturm Graz in neighbouring Guingamp as their own stadium is not up to UEFA requirements.

“If someone had told us… that Real Madrid would be behind us (now), we would have believed that even less,” added Brest coach Eric Roy during his press conference on Tuesday.

“We got off to a good start in the competition, while Real were perhaps in a period where they were a little less good.

“We saw them lose in Lille (1-0), we saw them lose at home to AC Milan (3-1).

“We managed to over-perform, they may have under-performed, and that’s certainly why today we have a point more than them.”

The Frenchman promised his side would look to be proactive against their fancied opponents.

“We’ll have to play, but when I say play, I mean really play, in other words be capable of causing problems for our opponents,” said Roy.

“The fantastic thing about football is that it’s still the sport where the favourite doesn’t always win.

“It’s obvious that if you look at the stats, if you look at the budget, if you look at the fixture list, if you look at the squad, you can tell yourself that you don’t stand a chance.

“But in football, you can be inferior and still win games. It doesn’t happen often, but it can happen.”

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Sunday it would be “difficult” to be Vinicius Junior after the player was sent off against Valencia. The Brazilian winger pushed goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski in the back of the neck amid a spat between the two players and was dismissed. Vinicius was mocked by Valencia fans at their Mestalla stadium during the game, having squared off with some who racially abused him in a match in 2022.

“I think it is difficult (to be Vinicius), I’m not in his skin, but I think it’s difficult,” Ancelotti told reporters, after Vinicius saw red in Madrid’s 2-1 La Liga win on Friday.

“To bear everything that has happened, the insults, everything, it’s not so simple.

“Obviously he’s sad about the red card, he said sorry and we have to look forwards.”

Vinicius, who has suffered racial abuse at numerous stadiums in Spain, is also often targeted by fans for his behaviour on the pitch.

The 24-year-old often complains to officials after clashing with defenders and sometimes engages and responds to fans who jeer him.

“What happens in stadiums… I think he has improved his attitude a lot, he can keep improving but nobody is perfect,” continued Ancelotti.

“I think he’s done a lot of work on that, and he has improved so much that he is the best player in the world.”

Vinicius may face a ban after his red card, which will be decided next week, meaning he is available for Madrid’s Copa del Rey clash against Deportivo Minera on Monday.

“We’re still convinced it was not worth a red card but a yellow, so we hope he is not banned,” said Ancelotti.

League leaders and reigning champions Madrid then face Mallorca in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on Thursday in Saudi Arabia.

Rayo Vallecano prevented Real Madrid from taking provisional control of La Liga by holding the European champions’ to a pulsating 3-3 draw on Saturday. Real turned up at their city rivals after a hard fought 3-2 away win at Atalanta in the Champions League in midweek. Kylian Mbappe netted his 50th goal in the competition to open the scoring in Italy only to come off with a thigh injury which left the French star out of Carlo Ancelotti’s calculations for this Saturday night away date in the Spanish capital.

Rayo Vallecano, on the back of a win last time out, stunned the visiting giants when Unai Lopez headed in Jorge de Frutos’s pin-perfect cross with the game only four minutes old.

Rayo went for the kill at a raucous Estadio de Vallecas, only for de Frutos’s shot to fly over the bar.

But the home side only had to wait until after the half hour mark to double their lead with another header, this time from Abdul Mumin.

That unexpected scoreline only lasted three minutes as Fede Valverde pulled one back for Real with a tremendous 25-yard strike for his fourth goal of the season.

Just as Rayo might have been thinking of going into the break in the lead, Jude Bellingham bagged the leveller in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.

The England international headed Rodrygo’s clip into the bottom corner for his sixth straight goal in the league.

Real emerged in the second half intent on completing their comeback and their climb to the top of the table, for 24 hours at least.

Arda Guler had the ball in the back of the net but Real’s Turkish teenager’s effort was disallowed for clear offside.

Two minutes later, Rodrygo put the visitors in front for the first time in style, the Brazilian winger’s shot flying into the top corner past Augusto Batalla.

Ancelotti introduced Vinicius Junior, who made his comeback against Atalanta from injury and also got on the scoresheet against the Serie A leaders.

The sight of the fearsome forward did not cow Rayo, who seconds later cancelled out Real’s lead when Isi Palazon connected with Florian Lejeune’s long range teaser to fox Thibaut Courtois.

That was how the encounter ended, with Real now on 37 points, one adrift of Barcelona but with a game in hand.

Real’s next assignment is on Wednesday, in the Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar against Mexican side Pachuca with Mbappe set to be on the plane to Doha.

Barcelona will have a chance of extending their lead at the top when they host Leganes on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid are three points adrift of Barcelona having also played a game less, and have won five in a row in La Liga going into Sunday’s home derby with Getafe.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe suffered a thigh injury in this week’s Champions League match at Atalanta, the Spanish club confirmed Thursday without giving details on his absence. “Following tests carried out on Kylian Mbappe today by the Real Madrid medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a thigh injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored,” Real said in a statement. On Tuesday, Mbappe opened the scoring in the 10th minute in a 3-2 win in Bergamo to revive the holders’ flagging Champions League campaign.

But the 25-year-old pulled up with a muscle pain after 36 minutes and was replaced by Rodrygo.

“Mbappe has some discomfort in his hamstrings. It doesn’t seem serious but we’ll see tomorrow,” said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti after Tuesday’s match.

“He couldn’t sprint, it hurt him a bit and we thought it best to replace him.”

Before pulling up Mbappe had one of his best outings in the Madrid jersey since joining last summer from Paris Saint-Germain with three clear scoring chances, including one in the second minute.

He scored the 50th goal of his career in the Champions League and his 12th since joining Real Madrid.

Real play Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Saturday followed by the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on December 18 and another Liga game at home against Sevilla four days later.

Kylian Mbappe saw a penalty saved as Liverpool beat Real Madrid 2-0 on Wednesday to inflict a third Champions League defeat in five matches on the holders. Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo scored the goals in the second half as the Reds maintained their perfect record to return to the top of the table. Mohamed Salah also fired wide from the spot, but it mattered little as Liverpool secured a 17th win in Arne Slot’s first 19 games in charge. Slot has already achieved what Jurgen Klopp could not as Liverpool boss by slaying the Spanish giants.

Liverpool had a score to settle with Madrid, who were unbeaten in eight previous meetings between the sides, including Champions League finals against Klopp’s men in 2018 and 2022.

“You know how special it is to play against a club that won this Champions League so many times, are the reigning champions and were a pain in the ass for Liverpool many times as well,” said Slot.

Defeat sends Carlo Ancelotti’s side tumbling down to 24th in the table.

Only the top 24 progress to the knockout stage with the top eight advancing directly to the last 16.

Liverpool are well on course to do just that and the confidence coursing through a side also eight points clear at the top of the Premier League was in evidence throughout in front of a highly-charged Anfield crowd.

Madrid were hamstrung by a lengthy injury list and made the trip to England without Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Aurelien Tchouameni and David Alaba.

Young centre-back Raul Asencio has been pressed into action by those absences and he made a vital goal-line clearance on four minutes.

Darwin Nunez was sent in behind the Madrid defence by Salah and after his shot produced a fine save from Thibaut Courtois, Asencio reacted smartly to prevent the rebound bouncing off him and into his own net.

Courtois was Liverpool’s scourge with a man-of-the-match performance in the final two years ago as Madrid prevailed 1-0 in Paris.

The Belgian was at his best again as he blocked another big Nunez chance from point-blank range as the Liverpool pressure built without reward before the break.

‘Difficult time’ for Mbappe

Courtois produced another brilliant stop at the start of the second period to parry Conor Bradley’s downward header.

But Liverpool were not to be denied as Bradley was this time the provider for Mac Allister, who manufactured the space for a shot into the far corner on 52 minutes.

The visitors were relying on Mbappe for a moment of magic in the absence of Vinicius, but the Frenchman was well-marshalled by his international team-mate Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk.

His chance to silence his critics arrived on the hour mark when Andy Robertson was adjudged to have tripped Lucas Vazquez inside the area.

Caoimhin Kelleher has excelled in the absence of the injured Alisson Becker and leapt to his left to save Mbappe’s spot-kick.

“It is a difficult time for Kylian,” said Ancelotti. “We have to be patient with him, he is an exceptional player.”

Salah sparked a furore ahead of the game by declaring his disappointment with Liverpool’s failure to offer him a contract renewal.

The Egyptian has been in sparkling form this season and his pace and trickery fooled Ferland Mendy into a mistimed challenge.

Salah, though, gave Madrid a lifeline by firing his penalty off the outside of the post.

Liverpool had to wait just six more minutes for the cushion of a second goal as substitute Gakpo rose highest from Robertson’s cross to power a header past Courtois.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Friday the club’s French striker Kylian Mbappe “seems unaffected to me” after Swedish media reported he is being investigated for an alleged rape during a visit to Stockholm. Mbappe’s lawyer told AFP this week the France captain was “shocked” to see his name linked to the investigation and he will take action for libel. The forward was not selected by France for UEFA Nations League matches after an injury and visited the Swedish capital with a group of people last week. “In this moment (the reports) are speculations, I see him working every day, he is happy, content, he doesn’t seem affected to me at all,” said Ancelotti.

“He’s looking forward to keep on helping the team.”

Ancelotti said Mbappe, 25, had been given time off by the Spanish and European champions.

“The days off were set for him and beyond that, individuals can choose what they want to do,” explained Ancelotti.

“I don’t care where players prefer to rest. I went to London for a couple of days and didn’t ask anybody.

“I also don’t have a travel agency to organise trips for players.”

A Swedish prosecutor has confirmed that an investigation has been opened, without naming Mbappe.

Mbappe claimed in a post on X on Monday there was a link between the report and a hearing before a French league committee on Tuesday over his bitter dispute with his former club Paris Saint-Germain over what he says is 55 million euros ($60 million) in unpaid wages.

“FAKE NEWS !!!!. It’s becoming so predictable, on the eve of the hearing, as if by chance,” he wrote.

Mbappe completed a dream move to join Madrid in the summer after seven years at PSG.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Friday that two of the main factors behind his team’s poor play this season are “lack of intensity in defence and slow ball circulation”. Real Madrid sit second in La Liga on 18 points, three points behind leaders Barcelona, but have not set the new season alight despite the long-awaited addition of star striker Kylian Mbappe over the summer. On Wednesday, the reigning Liga and European champions lost their first match of the season away to French club Lille in the Champions League. “We are still not up to par, but we are not far away,” Ancelotti said during his pre-match press conference ahead of Madrid’s domestic clash with Villarreal.

“I think there are players who have not reached their best level, it’s normal, we have to be patient. We have a lack of intensity in defence, also offensively, and slow ball circulation — that’s where we have to improve.”

The Italian was philosophical when it came to discussing his side’s 1-0 defeat at Lille, saying that “sometimes a defeat brings you back to reality and I liked the way the players have reacted”.

Ancelotti also addressed concerns about Real’s strength in depth: “I don’t think there’s a lack of players to play with.

“We have a lot of variety and even if we have not shown all the quality we have, there is nothing missing”.

On Saturday, Madrid face third-placed Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Yellow Submarine have only lost one game in La Liga this season — 5-1 at home to Barca.
