Ruby Dhalla, a Canadian politician of Indian origin, is making history by running for the leadership of the Liberal Party and potentially becoming Canada’s first woman of colour Prime Minister. Dhalla emphasised the importance of diversity within the party and in the country’s debates.

As a self-made businesswoman, doctor, and three-time Member of Parliament, Dhalla believes she has the experience to navigate Canada’s challenges. She identified the rising cost of housing, increasing crime rates, rising food prices, and the threat of US tariffs as key issues facing Canadians. “Given the tariff threats that Canada is facing, it will have a big impact on Canadian workers and on the Canadian economy”, Dhalla added.

Dhalla’s personal story is one of overcoming humble beginnings. Born in Winnipeg to immigrant parents, she achieved her Canadian dream through hard work and determination. She added that her life speaks volumes about the opportunities that exist in Canada. She also credited Pierre Trudeau, current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s father, for opening Canada’s doors to immigrants in the 1970s.

She said, “My mother came to Canada in 1972 and I have the opportunity to, through her wishes, through a lot of hard work, drive and determination, but also because of the great country that Canada is, to fulfill a Canadian dream.”

Regarding India-Canada relations, Dhalla stressed the importance of strengthening ties, given the large Indian diaspora in Canada. She believes Canada should explore partnerships with other countries, including India, to mitigate the impact of US tariffs.

Speaking in Hindi, she added, “Jitne bhi humare Canada main business log hain, workers hain, unko bhi ek opportunity milni chahiye ki wo baki deshon ke saath kaam kar sake”. (Workers and business people in Canada should also get an opportunity to work with other countries.)

Dhalla has been working with the Liberal Party since she was 14. Her leadership’s campaign focuses on rebuilding the Liberal Party and Canada. Her slogan, ‘Canada’s comeback starts now’ reflects her commitment to addressing the country’s challenges. In response to criticism from Pierre Poilievre regarding the Liberal Party’s damaging impact on the Canadian society and economy, Dhalla outlined her initiatives to address crime, housing and food prices, and taxation.

Finally, she aims to create a competitive economy that supports businesses, entrepreneurs, and young people. With her international experience, she hopes to restore Canada’s reputation on the world stage and build strong partnerships with other countries. She said, “It’s important that we bring Canada back to the country that was very respected on the world stage, that we work with other countries to ensure that we continue to build great partnerships and great relationships.”

“India first raised the presence of organised crime in Canada but the issue was ignored because of a permissive atmosphere for a long time,” External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar said on Saturday (October 26, 2024), rejecting the targeting of its High Commissioner and diplomats by the Mr. Trudeau government.

Speaking at an event in Pune on the subject ‘Emerging Opportunities in the Present Global Scenario’, the diplomat-turned-politician said India will obviously take a tough position, which has been taken when its national interest, integrity and sovereignty are concerned.

“We completely reject the manner in which the Canadian Government targeted our High Commissioner and diplomats,” Mr. Jaishankar said in response to a question.

Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma was declared a “person of interest” by Canada on October 13, 2024 in its investigation into the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who has been declared a Khalistani terrorist by India.

Before Canada could take further action, New Delhi recalled Mr. Verma and five other diplomats, who were also similarly named.

In response, India also expelled six Canadian diplomats. The diplomatic row escalated further with Ottawa hinting at possible sanctions against India, which has trashed the allegations, including those levelled by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The Canadian authorities also accused Indian agents of involvement in “homicides, extortion and violent acts targeting pro-Khalistan supporters and even attempted to link the Bishnoi gang to unspecified criminal activities on Canadian soil.”

“The issue is that there is a small minority of people over there but they have made themselves into what appears to be a bigger political voice,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the politics of that country is giving that political lobby, perhaps a degree of play which I would argue is not just bad for us and our relationship. I would argue it is bad for Canada itself,” Jaishankar said.

He said India first raised the presence of organised crime in Canada.

“We were telling them and they were not listening. It is happening because of a permissive atmosphere for a long time. I think this is an issue with a particular political phase or set of political forces. We would certainly hope that more sensible, more sober, more responsible asserts itself,” Mr. Jaishankar added.

Speaking about the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, he said it’s been three years now.

“How many countries in the world had the capability to visit Moscow and meet Vladimir Putin as well as visit Ukraine to meet (President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy? The world thinks that India has this ability. India stood up and spoke about the issue,” the External Affairs Minister said.

He also said countries with the best human resources will be the most powerful ones in the future. It was during India’s presidency of the G20 that the African Union was admitted as a member of the G20.

A Canadian Opposition leader has accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of using Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder to divert attention from other controversies and asked the government to posthumously take away the Khalistani militant’s citizenship to right the past administrative error.

Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, also said the Khalistani militant who is the central figure in the whole controversy was a foreign terrorist who was somehow granted citizenship in 2007.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Monday it had identified India’s High Commissioner in the country and five other diplomats as persons of interest in the June 2023 killing of Nijjar. The RCMP also said they uncovered evidence of an intensifying campaign against Canadians by agents of the Indian government.

Bernier said if true, allegations made by the RCMP and the Liberal government that Indian diplomats participated in criminal activities on our territory are very serious and should be dealt with.

“So far, however, we haven’t been given any proof. And Trudeau is clearly using this crisis to divert the attention from other controversies,” he said.

Bernier said Nijjar was a foreign terrorist who used fraudulent documents to claim asylum in Canada several times.

“One myth should be dispelled though: That the central figure in this controversy, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Khalistani militant who was murdered last year, was a Canadian. He was actually a foreign terrorist who used fraudulent documents to claim asylum in Canada several times starting in 1997. His claims were rejected but he was nevertheless allowed to stay in this country and was somehow granted citizenship in 2007,” he said.

“Nijjar wasn’t a Canadian. Canada should perhaps posthumously take away his citizenship to right this administrative error,” he said.

He should have been deported after his first fake asylum claim, like the hundreds of thousands of fake asylum claimants who are in Canada right now, Bernier said.

“All this is happening because Canada has for decades deliberately invited these foreigners and their tribal conflicts into our country. We should recognise this major blunder and work with the government of India to find solutions instead of jeopardising our relations with a rising world power and an important ally over this issue,” he added.

Timeline: What led to India, Canada expelling top diplomats?

The relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Prime Minister Trudeau’s allegations in September last year of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar, who was gunned down in Surrey, British Columbia. New Delhi had rejected Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

India has repeatedly criticised Trudeau’s government for being soft on supporters of the Khalistan movement who live in Canada. The Khalistan movement is banned in India but has support among the Sikh diaspora, particularly in Canada.

India expelled six Canadian diplomats on Monday and announced that it is withdrawing its High Commissioner in Canada, after dismissing Ottawa’s allegations linking the envoy to a probe into the killing of Nijjar.

Canada, however, said it has expelled six Indian diplomats.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi said on Monday India received a “diplomatic communication from Canada suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are ‘persons of interest’ in a matter related to an investigation in that country”.

“We have no faith in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the government of India has decided to withdraw the high commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials,” the MEA said in a statement.
