As the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most expensive overseas recruit ever at ₹25.2 crore, Australia’s Cameron Green had many more eyeballs fixed on his exploits for Kolkata Knight Riders this season.

A patchy start to the tournament, coupled with KKR’s streak of losses, meant Green was in the firing line, but the all-rounder from Perth — an imposing presence at 6’6” — has got better as the competition has progressed.

The 26-year-old has contributed 232 runs and four wickets in 10 matches for the three-time champion. While he would have certainly liked to make more of an impact, he hasn’t felt any additional pressure because of his price tag.

“The support staff never put any pressure on me. They have been awesome to me since day one. I was never made to feel that there was any extra pressure compared to anyone else,” Green said after Knight Riders defeated Delhi Capitals on Friday (May 8, 2026).

“There’s always pressure on the international guys. You have to be performing at all times because the guys on the bench are also ready to go. But, no, I’ll probably have the support staff to thank for that.”

KKR’s hopes of reaching the playoffs appeared derailed when it went winless in its first six matches. Now, a run of four victories on the trot has given Ajinkya Rahane and Co. a fresh lease of life. Asked for his view on the resurgence, Green argued that the belief was always intact.

“I didn’t think the belief was ever gone. We’ve had a really good culture this whole tournament,” he opined.

The Etihad Arena — adjacent to the picturesque Yas Marina Formula One circuit — was illuminated by football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence only last week.

On Tuesday (December 16, 2025), the iconic venue will once again be at the centre of global sporting attention when franchises splurge lakhs and crores at the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) Player Auction.

Since the IPL’s inception in 2008, the auction has evolved into a spectacle that is followed as keenly as — if not more than — the two-and-a-half months of on-field action that follows in the Indian summer.

Despite divided opinion on whether the auction has lost some of its sheen with stalwarts like Andre Russell, Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis either retiring from or opting out of the league, anticipation has been palpable ever since franchise think-tanks began arriving in the United Arab Emirates over the past few days.

Cameron Green is expected to be one of the costliest buys, particularly after the Australia all-rounder confirmed his availability to bowl despite being listed as a batter in the opening set.

Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who was released by Chennai Super Kings, could also trigger a bidding war, notwithstanding concerns over his fitness.

Among Indian players, Venkatesh Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi — both released after commanding hefty sums last season — will be hoping to inch closer to their previous pay cheques of ₹23.75 crore and ₹11 crore, respectively.

While Mumbai Indians, with the smallest purse (₹2.75 crore), and Punjab Kings, with the fewest slots to fill (four), are likely to play a relatively subdued role, the spotlight is expected to remain on Kolkata Knight Riders and CSK.

Together, the two franchises account for more than 40% of the total auction purse and have opted for significant overhauls after underwhelming IPL 2025 campaigns.

Both could target Green and Venkatesh, though their choices among overseas pacers will be closely watched. CSK, meanwhile, is also in the market for a proven Indian spinner.

Another intriguing subplot is whether Prithvi Shaw finds a second lease of life after going unsold at last year’s mega auction. Shaw is understood to have reached out to multiple franchises, with team owners weighing the balance between his undeniable talent and disciplinary concerns.

Most franchise representatives will participate via teleconference, with Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer set to be the most prominent player present inside the auction room.

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green on Sunday (December 14, 2025) clarified that he well be available to bowl in the IPL saying a “stuff-up” by his manager led to him being mistakenly registered as a batter for next week’s mini auction.

The 26-year-old, who miss the 2025 IPL season as he recovered from back surgery, return to international cricket as a specialist batter in June. However, he has since been cleared to bowl and has been rolling his arm in the ongoing Ashes series between Australia and England.

“I’ll be good to bowl. I don’t know if my manager would like to hear this, but there was a stuff-up on his end,” Green was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

“He didn’t mean to say ‘batter’. I think he accidentally selected the wrong box. It was pretty funny how it’s all played out, but it was actually a stuff-up on his end.

The lanky all-rounder, who previously represented Mumbai Indians in 2023 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024, is among the biggest names in the auction and is likely to be in the highest demand..

Green has entered the auction with a base price of Rs 2 crore. He has been listed under the batters’ category instead of the all-rounders’ lot.

The auction take place in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday (December 16, 2025).

“I’m sure I will be (watching), with a few other guys. They’re always good fun to watch. It’s a bit of a lottery where you might go, but also who might be in your team, so it’s always been fun to watch,” he added.

All-rounder Cameron Green said on Sunday (December 14, 2025) there was no room for complacency in the third Test this week, conscious that Australia let England bounce back from 2-0 down in the last Ashes series.

Australia were on top in England in 2023, winning at Edgbaston and Lord’s, before the hosts won two of the last three Tests with the other drawn.

Despite the series ending 2-2, Pat Cummins’ side retained the Ashes as holders.

“That’s a good reminder for our team to stay really level,” Green told reporters ahead of the third Test at the Adelaide Oval starting on Wednesday.

“I think you can at times look a bit far ahead, but that’s a great reminder for us to stay as good as we can be and finish it off.”

The odds are stacked in Australia’s favour on home soil after eight-wicket wins in Perth and Brisbane, with England winless Down Under since their 2010-11 tour.

Ben Stokes’ side have been widely panned for their lack of fight and perceived poor preparation, with the team under an intense media glare.

A security guard for the team had a run-in with a cameraman on Saturday as they departed Brisbane airport for Adelaide, with pictures showing him seemingly pushing the Channel Seven operator away.

Green said he had sympathy for England.

“You never like getting filmed, especially when you want to get away from it,” he said.

“There’s always sympathy for anyone in life that’s getting filmed in public or in a private space, it’s never a nice feeling.”

Australia opener Usman Khawaja said he had recovered from the back spasms that have plagued him all series.

The 38-year-old did not open in the first Test, scoring just two batting at number four in the first innings, and was ruled out of the second, with Travis Head stepping up spectacularly alongside Jake Weatherald.

Whether he slots back in again at the top remains to be seen.

“I’m feeling 100 (percent),” he told reporters on Saturday. “Obviously, I hope to play. I don’t really know.”

Should selectors stick with Head and Weatherald to open, the 85-Test veteran Khawaja could still bat in the middle order, which would likely mean Josh Inglis making way.

Cameron Green highly likely to miss Border-Gavaskar Trophy as back surgery looks big possibility https://artifex.news/article68742757-ece/ Thu, 10 Oct 2024 22:29:03 +0000 https://artifex.news/article68742757-ece/ Read More “Cameron Green highly likely to miss Border-Gavaskar Trophy as back surgery looks big possibility” »

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is highly likely to miss the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India from November this year as a back surgery looks a big possibility for the youngster after latest injury issue during the white-ball series against England.

Surgery is among the legitimate option for Green among various other recovery plans which are being worked for him by Cricket Australia’s medical and high performance team following the injury during U.K. tour for a white-ball series against Scotland and England, as per ESPNCricinfo.

Green flew home from U.K. after complaining of back soreness after the third ODI against England at Chester-Le-Street. Though he had scans in England and in Australia, CA’s medical team are taking their time to assess how to move forward with regards to his injury, with no formal plans issued.

The 25-year-old all-rounder has had four stress fractures but none since 2019. He has been managed really well in his first four years of international cricket. If he opts to go under the knife, it would rule him out for the entire Test summer.

However, taking a non-surgical route means he could still play some cricket in the Test summer, though as a specialist batter. Also, the time frame for his availability is not clear yet.

His absence from the series will be a huge jolt for Australia, as they look forward to a possible batting re-shuffle after Steve Smith’s underwhelming start to a new career era as an opener.

An indication of his batting position will come when he plays Sheffield Shield cricket for New South Wales on Sunday against Victoria at Sydney.

In four Tests and eight innings as an opener, Smith has been underwhelming, scoring just 171 runs at an average of 28.50, with one half-century.

His highest score as an opener is 91*.

Green has been batting at number four slot and proved his effectiveness with a fine 174 against New Zealand this year.

If Green makes himself unavailable and Smith moves back to four, Australia could get a new Test opener from Shield cricket, with Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw in contention. They were all an option to take David Warner’s position following his retirement, before Smith put up his hand to open.

Harris also made a fine start to his Shield season with a 143-run knock for Victoria against Tasmania. Also, Tasmania all-rounder Beau Webster made a century. Bancroft and Renshaw made low scores during their first innings of the match between Western Australia and Queensland.

Cameron Green’s unbeaten fifty after three wickets led Australia to a series sweep of Scotland in the third Twenty20 on Saturday.

Green took 3-35 to limit Scotland to 149-9, and his 62 not out from 39 balls spearheaded Australia’s chase.

Aaron Hardie’s boundary to point in the 17th over completed the win at 153-4.

Brandon McMullen’s 39-ball 56 led Scotland but he lacked support.

Beside Green, Sean Abbott and Hardie took two wickets each.

The total wasn’t enough to intimidate Australia, even though openers Travis Head and Jake Fraser-McGurk were removed cheaply again.

Green hit five of Australia’s eight sixes, and two boundaries.

Australia’s eight-game white-ball tour of England begins on Wednesday with a T20 in Southampton.

Skipper Cummins hints at increased bowling workload for Green, Marsh in Tests against India https://artifex.news/article68542119-ece/ Mon, 19 Aug 2024 08:47:08 +0000 https://artifex.news/article68542119-ece/ Read More “Skipper Cummins hints at increased bowling workload for Green, Marsh in Tests against India” »

Australian skipper Pat Cummins said that the bowling workload of all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh will be raised more during the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India at home later this year, with an aim to help the mainstay trio of Cummins-Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood sustain themselves throughout what promises to be an intense battle.

The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) will commence with the first Test – a day match – at Perth Stadium from November 22 to November 26, setting the tone for the series. India has won its last two series in Australia, held in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

In the last season, Australia played an unchanged frontline bowling attack for seven Tests against Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand. None of these matches reached the fifth day and only in three innings, Australia had to bowl more than 78 overs. These factors kept Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc fresh and active for the entirety of the season.

Green provided Australia with an additional pace bowling option when he returned during the West Indies series, but only bowled 42 overs across the next four Tests, playing mainly as a number four batter when Steve Smith moved up to the opening slot following David Warner’s retirement.

“It has been huge having the allrounders. In some ways, we have not had to use them as much as we thought we would. Which is a great thing. The last couple of summers have been pretty light [with] quick Test matches,” said Cummins as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“I suspect this summer might be a bit different at time. We will be drawing on Cam Green and Mitch Marsh a bit more. Even someone like Cam basically started in Shield cricket as a bowler but has not had to bowl heaps in Test matches. Now he is a few years older, I think we will be leaning on him a bit more,” he added.

Green has taken 35 wickets in Tests at an average of 35.31 and has a five-wicket haul as well. The young all-rounder was moved into the number four slot and has scored a magnificent 174 against NZ at Wellington to showcase what he could offer there. For the BGT series, there seems to be uncertainty about Australia’s top six, with Smith being largely underwhelming as an opener for the past few months. But it is more or less fixed that Marsh and Green will be a part of the top six.

Cummins said that these two all-rounders making it into the top six on the basis of their batting alone is a “luxury”. “The first point is they both absolutely make the top six on their batting alone which is a luxury. We are really lucky that Nathan Lyon bowls plenty of overs, so you do not necessarily have to have an allrounder, but it makes a big difference to have that fifth bowling option. And with someone like Cam and Mitch, we have six bowling options. It is a really nice thing to have. The top six should always make the team on their batting.”

On being complimented by his teammates for managing their workloads well, Cummins said, “It is nice of them to say that, they would never say it to my face. When I am at the top of their mark asking them to do something, they know I am also doing it down the other end and would not ask for something I cannot do myself. Maybe there is a bit of built-up trust over the last decade or so,” he concluded.

The second Test, scheduled for December 6 to 10 at Adelaide Oval, will feature the exciting day-night format under the stadium’s lights. After that, fans will turn their attention to The Gabba in Brisbane for the third Test, which will be held from December 14 to 18.

The customary Boxing Day Test, set for December 26 to 30 at Melbourne’s storied Melbourne Cricket Ground, will bring the series to its penultimate stage.

The fifth and final Test, taking place at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7, will serve as the series climax, promising a dramatic conclusion to an exciting contest.

Cameron Green lauded star batter Virat Kohli for playing a “vintage” innings to keep Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the race to the IPL playoffs.

Kohli made full use of the three reprieves, including one on zero, to make a 47-ball 92 that set the tone for their 60-run win over Punjab Kings in a must-win match here on May 9.

“He played the vintage Virat that we all know. It was a beautiful watch from the other end. That’s the beauty of having Virat in your team, as opposition you can’t give him that many chances,” said Green in the post-match press meet.

The Australian all-rounder, who helped himself to a 27-ball 46, said Kohli was trying to be aggressive and the drops did not affect him.

“He’s always going to make you hurt, especially if you drop him three or four times. Early in his innings, he was trying to be really aggressive. I think he looked like after a couple of dropped catches, he didn’t have much to lose,” added Green.

The Bengaluru side still need to win their remaining two matches against Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings at home to remain in the mix for playoffs.

Green said the team has done well to win four matches on the bounce after a string of defeats.

“Yeah, I think what we’ve done really well is just look at the next game. I think obviously at the start of the tournament you can always look further at what’s coming up, where are we on the table.”

“But I think that’s the beauty of where we were at (now), we kind of were pushed into a corner and all we could really do was focus on the next game,” he added

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings assistant coach Brad Haddin blamed the dropped catches for his side’s defeat.

The Kings let-off Kohli and Green more than once and they bruised them with quickfire knocks as RCB posted a tall 241 for seven.

In reply, PBKS could only manage 181 before getting bundled out.

“100 percent we lost the match because of dropped catches. If we look through the game, we dropped two guys on a duck, and both of them scored big runs. That was where the game was lost.

“There was not too much difference in the batting and bowling of both teams. The catches we put down cost us the game,” said Haddin.

All-rounder Cameron Green will miss a substantial part of Australia’s Cricket World Cup build-up after being struck on the head by a ball from Kagiso Rabada during the first one-day international against South Africa on Thursday.

An Australia team spokesperson confirmed on Friday that Green will undergo an eight-day concussion protocol during which he will be monitored by the team’s medical staff.

He is unlikely to be available until the fifth and final match in Johannesburg on September 17.

It adds to a list of injury concerns for Australia with the World Cup starting in India on October 5, less than a month away.

It also provides an opportunity for Marnus Labuschagne to press his claims for a call-up if a vacancy opens up in the World Cup squad.

Labuschagne was man of the match on Thursday after batting as a concussion substitute for Green. He made 80 not out to steer Australia to an unlikely three-wicket win.

He went out to bat with Australia 72 for five, which then became 113 for seven chasing South Africa’s 222 all out on a tricky pitch.

Injuries meant that only 11 of Australia’s World Cup squad of 15 travelled to South Africa. Green’s injury reduced that number to ten, which means Labuschagne has a good chance of playing in at least the next three matches, starting with the second game in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Australian captain Pat Cummins is recovering from a wrist injury. Other World Cup players missing the South African tour because of injuries of varying degrees of seriousness are Glenn Maxwell (ankle), Mitchell Starc (groin) and Steve Smith (wrist).

Australia still have a three-match one-day series in India ahead of the World Cup in which injured players can prove their fitness.

Labuschagne was not due to tour South Africa, having been dropped after a sequence of poor form in one-day games. He was added to the squad when Smith withdrew. After his match-winning performance on Thursday he played down his chances of getting to the World Cup.

“I wasn’t too shocked when I was dropped. But I did say (to the selectors) that I still want to be that person batting for you in the middle order. You’ve just got to sit tight and wait for that opportunity and when the opportunity comes you’ve got to be ready.”
