The absence of all-rounder Cameron Green will change Australia’s bowling dynamics for the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy and may increase spinner Nathan Lyon’s workload, according to star pacer Mitchell Starc. Green will undergo surgery to address his back-related troubles which will keep him out of action for at least six months. While Australia have another all-round option in Mitchell Marsh ready to share the workload, Starc admitted that Green’s unavailability changes the equation.

“It will always change the dynamic when you take a genuine allrounder like a Cameron Green, or with England when you take a Ben Stokes, out,” Starc was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

“When you have that genuine all-rounder who has been part of a group for a while … you get into a bit of a routine of having that extra bowling option.

“I don’t know what the dynamic of that line-up is going to be, there is a lot of talk around that opening spot and Mitch (Marsh) bowling as well,” he said.

Starc said the issue isn’t something which Australia have not dealt before.

“It’s not completely foreign. We’ve had series in the past where we haven’t had an all-rounder at all,” he said.

“We’ve had to take some of that workload, and Gaz (Nathan Lyon) has probably had to bowl a bit extra as well.

“That’s been the mindset for a number of years now, with overseas tour or a home series and the mentality of how gruelling a summer or series can be.” Starc said the gap days between the five Tests against India will be crucial for the bowlers as Australia look to reclaim hold on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for first time in a decade.

“It’s been spoken about, if you have four or five Tests that go four days, the extra day between games… There is obviously a big gap between the first and second Test and the third and fourth Test. That may play a part as well,” he said.

“We don’t know what wickets we’ll get, we don’t know how successful or unsuccessful we will be.” “There are too many factors to sit here at the start and say this is what is going to happen. But there are certainly times where you feel the grind of five Tests.” Starc backed young batter Sam Konstas to excel at the highest level after impressive returns in Sheffield Shield.

“There’s no reason (for him) not to (handle it). He’s obviously got the talent, got the work ethic, he’s a lovely young man. If he’s not picked this summer then I am sure runs on the board will help him in the long run,” he said.

Pat Cummins Empathizes With Cameron Green Amid Back Injury Challenges https://artifex.news/really-sympathetic-we-want-him-bowling-pat-cummins-empathizes-with-cameron-green-amid-back-injury-challenges-6775470/ Sat, 12 Oct 2024 18:03:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/really-sympathetic-we-want-him-bowling-pat-cummins-empathizes-with-cameron-green-amid-back-injury-challenges-6775470/ Read More “Pat Cummins Empathizes With Cameron Green Amid Back Injury Challenges” »

Australia’s Test and ODI captain, Pat Cummins, has expressed deep sympathy for teammate Cameron Green, who is currently dealing with back stress fractures. Unlike Cummins, who did not opt for surgery for a similar issue, Green has decided to undergo the prescribed procedure to stabilize his condition. Cummins acknowledged the challenges faced by the 25-year-old all-rounder, who aspires to excel in both batting and bowling. “Really sympathetic,” Cummins was quoted as saying to The Sydney Morning Herald.

“We want him bowling, Cam wants to be bowling, and he has a long career ahead of him. So it’s about trying to place Cam the cricketer in the best position he can be to have the career that he’s hoping for. He’s young, so I’m sure he’ll be right in the long run,” he added.

Cummins highlighted the inherent risks of fast bowling, acknowledging the injuries that often accompany the pursuit of speed.

“Bowling and trying to bowl fast is unfortunately fraught with injuries. In some ways, the hardest thing is missing cricket and seeing games go by that you could have been part of, but also it can be a pretty lonely way back,” Cummins noted.

Reflecting on the rehabilitation process, Cummins noted, “You don’t just set the clock and suddenly, you’re back. There is a bit of work to get back, rehabbing and building up as well. It’s always a challenge.”

Understanding Green’s predicament, Cummins added, “It looks like Greeny is going to have that situation, which is not uncommon for him unfortunately, so he knows what needs to be done, but that doesn’t make it any easier.”

Cummins’ words underscore the support within the Australian team for Green as he navigates this challenging period in his career, aiming to return stronger and continue contributing as a key player for the team.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s star players Virat Kohli and Cameron Green were involved in a funny moment during the side’s IPL 2024 game against Kolkata Knight Riders at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday. Virat scored an unbeaten 83 off 59 balls in the first innings of the game and surpassed SunRisers Hyderabad’s Heinrich Klaasen to become the leading run-scorer in IPL 2024. During the mid-innings presentation, Green showed up with the Orange Cap to give it to Kohli, and he ended up giving both the cap and the mic to the India player.

The moment took a funny turn when the commentator said that he wants to talk to Green not Kohli. The former RCB skipper then laughingly threw the mic towards Green with the Australian shooing Kohli away in a funny manner.

Watch it here:

Kohli batted out the innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru with his second straight Indian Premier League half-century on Friday but Kolkata Knight Riders still cruised to a seven-wicket victory.

Chasing the home side’s 182-6, Kolkata reached their target with 19 balls to spare when skipper Shreyas Iyer hit an unruffled six off Mayank Dagar. Their chase was off to a roaring start with Phil Salt (30) and all-rounder Sunil Narine (47) putting on 86 for the visitors, earning fulsome praise from Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis.

Narine hit five sixes in his 22-ball knock before Dagar bowled him in the seventh, with Salt following in the next over when he was caught at deep square leg.

Venkatesh Iyer made 50 to keep up the momentum before he was caught by Kohli while Shreyas saw out the innings with his 39.

Kohli notched up 83 and made his 50 off 36 balls, throwing a thumbs-up to the jubilant home crowd, and his knock made him the leading tournament run-scorer since the season began last week.

But a lack of able partners left Bengaluru’s innings a one-man show.

Cameron Green May Skip White-Ball Series Against Pakistan To Prepare For Home Tests Against India In December https://artifex.news/cameron-green-may-skip-white-ball-series-against-pakistan-to-prepare-for-home-tests-against-india-in-december-5173095/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 14:09:20 +0000 https://artifex.news/cameron-green-may-skip-white-ball-series-against-pakistan-to-prepare-for-home-tests-against-india-in-december-5173095/ Read More “Cameron Green May Skip White-Ball Series Against Pakistan To Prepare For Home Tests Against India In December” »

Australia batter Cameron Green is likely to skip the white-ball series in Pakistan later this year and instead play Sheffield Shield to prepare himself for the the big-ticket home Test series against India in December, according to head coach Andrew McDonald. The same template worked for the 24-year-old in the ongoing Test series in New Zealand as he hit a career-best 174 not out in Australia’s big win in the first match in Wellington on Sunday. He was not included in the recent T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand and instead earmarked him for West Australia’s Sheffield Shield fixture against Tasmania in Hobart, where he struck an unbeaten 103 to provide an ideal warm-up for the first Test against the Kiwis.

“It’s a big decision to leave anyone out of international cricket when they’re potentially in the best eleven, so I’m glad he (Green) embraced that when we had that conversation with him, and the return on it is pretty immediate,” MacDonald said.

“The next stress point on that will be next summer, leading into the Indian Test series where we’ve got Pakistan in ODI cricket and T20 cricket. I’d like to probably err on the side of preparing him through red-ball – we know how good a white-ball player he is, so you put a priority on what it looks like next summer.

“The white-ball cricket’s important, but geez that Test summer’s important, so I think with the results he’s had (at Wellington) he’ll probably come to us and say ‘can you give us a couple of Shield games before the first Test against India?’.”

Australia will tour England in September for five ODIs and three T20Is, followed by a white-ball series in Pakistan where they play three ODIs and three T20Is in November.

This will be followed by the five-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia in December 2024-January 2025.

Australia have not beaten India in a Test series for a decade, which includes India’s past two visits to Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

“He’s become an all-three format player and we thought his greatest challenge was flipping between the formats,” McDonald said of Green’s increasingly vital all-round asset.

“We felt that by keeping Cam (Cameron Green) in one format for a period of time gave him the best chance, and that won’t always be the case with everyone.

“Other players can go (more readily) from one-day international cricket into Test cricket, and it’s probably the more experienced players who have done it over a period of time.” Green’s importance to Australia’s Test planning is underscored by the reshuffle of the batting line-up in the wake of David Warner’s retirement. Senior batter Steve Smith has been elevated to the opener’s position, and Green has been slotted into his number four role.

And even though Australia are also preparing for a T20 World Cup later this year, for which Green remains in the selection mix, it was deemed more valuable for him to play Shield cricket than in recent T20Is given he will be exposed to plenty of 20-over cricket in his upcoming IPL stint.
