Inter Milan moved provisionally top of Serie A on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Cagliari which put the champions ahead of Atalanta on goal difference. Second-half goals from Alessandro Bastoni, Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu decided an engaging match in Sardinia to give Inter their fifth straight win in Italy’s top flight. Atalanta can reclaim top spot later on Saturday when they face fourth-placed Lazio in Rome, looking for a club record-extending 12th league win on the bounce without injured star striker Mateo Retegui.

Cagliari are just inside the relegation zone after a fourth consecutive defeat for Davide Nicola’s side.

“The most important thing is that Inter win. If I get a goal too, then that’s a bonus,” said Martinez, who broke an eight-match scoring drought with his 71st-minute strike.

“We work hard every day to win trophies and anyone who sets foot on the pitch will give their all for the team. We’ve just got to keep going and make 2025 like this year.”

Inter could have won by a more convincing scoreline at the Unipol Domus stadium had captain Martinez not wasted great chances in each half before prodding home Nicolo Barella‘s cross.

Argentina striker Martinez hadn’t scored since November 3 and looked to be having another bad day in front of goal when he somehow failed to push home Calhanoglu’s cross midway through the first half.

He then flashed a low drive just past the post eight minutes after the break, moments after Bastoni gave Inter the lead with a brilliant looping header.

But he did net his seventh goal this season in all competitions and seven minutes later Calhanoglu made absolutely sure of the points from the penalty spot.

Next up, Inter travel to play the Italian Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, where Simone Inzaghi’s side take on Atalanta on Thursday.

Holders Juventus progressed to the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup with a 4-0 win at home to Cagliari on Tuesday. Dusan Vlahovic slotted home a first-half opener, before Teun Koopmeiners wrapped up the last-16 tie for the 15-time winners with a sensational free-kick from distance. Francisco Conceicao and Nico Gonzalez netted late to underline an emphatic performance by the Old Lady. “It was a good performance,” Juve coach Thiago Motta told Canale 5. “These lads are going through a tough situation in the right way, giving their all in every training session,” he added of his players who have endured a stop-start domestic campaign as they sit sixth in the league table.

Juve join Lazio, Empoli, Bologna and AC Milan in the next stage of the cup.

Serie A leaders Atalanta are in action on Wednesday against Cesena, while Roma take on Sampdoria.

Reigning Scudetto champions Inter Milan complete the round of 16 when they host Udinese on Thursday.

In Turin, Vlahovic put the home side in front one minute before half-time when he swivelled smartly on a pass to feet from Kenan Yildiz and rolled the ball into the far corner.

Summer signing Koopmeiners then notched up his second goal for Juve with an unstoppable left-footed free-kick from 25 metres out in the 53rd minute.

Vlahovic had the ball in the net twice more for Juve as they pressed forward in search of a third, but was on both occasions denied by the assistant’s flag for offside.

Conceicao eventually made it three on 80 minutes with a whipped finish after cutting in from the right flank and Gonzalez chipped home a fourth with one minute remaining.

Nicolo Zaniolo made sure Atalanta will stay top of Serie A this weekend with the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Cagliari which secured a club-record 10th straight league win. Substitute Zaniolo decided a hard-fought encounter in Sardinia by stroking home Raoul Bellanova’s cut-back in the 66th minute. The victory moved Atalanta five points clear in Serie A. Closest challengers Napoli can cut the gap back to two points at Udinese later on Saturday, while Juventus are 10 points off the pace ahead of their home fixture with bottom club Venezia.

“We’re up there, but winning 10 matches in a row doesn’t really mean anything as there are teams this season who have won eight on the bounce,” said coach Gian Piero Gasperini to DAZN.

Gasperini was not happy with his players’ performances as, after impressing in Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid, they struggled against Cagliari who are 15th and only two points above the relegation zone.

Atalanta, who also struck the post through Ademola Lookman almost straight after Zaniolo’s winner, only came away with all three points thanks to a brilliant performance between the sticks from Marco Carnesecchi.

Goalkeeper Carnesecchi pulled off three sensational stops in the six minutes before the break and saved the win in stoppage time by keeping out Leonardo Pavoletti’s header.

“A good chunk of this team, not everyone, needs to grow up a bit and get the same mentality as the core group of the squad,” said Gasperini. whose decision to make three substitutions at half-time was a sign of his dissatisfaction.

“Only then will we make those big steps forward.”

Zaniolo’s strike was his third of the season and a further sign of new life from the Italy international after a difficult last few years.

The 25-year-old was once the rising star of Italian football after coming to prominence at Roma, where two serious knee injuries in 2020 stymied his development as a creative playmaker.

He won the inaugural Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022 under Jose Mourinho, but fell out with the Portuguese coach and last year was packed off to Galatasaray, from where he was loaned to Atalanta in July.

Lazio continued their bid to crack Serie A’s top four with a 2-1 win on Monday over struggling Cagliari, who finished the match in Rome with nine men. Mattia Zaccagni struck the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 76th minute at the Stadio Olimpico to put Lazio fifth, Marco Baroni’s team separated from the Champions League positions by goal difference. Lazio are level on 22 points with third-placed Atalanta and Fiorentina after an eighth win in nine matches in all competitions which also put them within three points of league leaders Napoli.

Zaccagni’s winner came after Cagliari’s Zito Luvumbo levelled Boulaye Dia’s early opener just before half-time.

Cagliari’s night went from bad to worse two minutes after captain Lazio Zaccagni netted his fourth goal of the season, when Yerry Mina was dismissed for second bookable offence.

That decision, for a soft foul on Valentin Castellanos, led to Michel Adopo protesting so furiously that he too was booked for a second time and shown a red card.

Earlier, Mario Balotelli made his debut for Genoa who lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Parma.

Andrea Pinamonti netted the decisive goal with 10 minutes remaining before former Italy striker Balotelli made his first Serie A appearance in four years as a late substitute.

Balotelli, 34, had little time to make an impact on the match but was booked in stoppage time.

Genoa sit one place above the drop zone, level on nine points with Parma, Cagliari and Como, with the latter beaten 1-0 at Empoli.

Napoli are top of Serie A after thrashing Cagliari 4-0 on Sunday in a match which was stopped in the first half due to fan disorder, as Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw at Monza ahead of their Champions League opener at Manchester City. Goals from Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Romelu Lukaku and Alessandro Buongiorno gave Napoli their third straight win and a one-point lead over Inter, Torino and Juventus, who they face in Turin next weekend.

Sunday’s display was another step in the right direction for new coach Antonio Conte, who is already having to field questions about whether his team will challenge for the league title.

“Teams are still settling in as the transfer window closed late and we are all trying to find our shape,” said Conte to DAZN.

“We’ve worked hard over the last two and a half months, we’ve got to keep pushing forward without thinking about anyone else.”

Napoli’s win was marred by ugly scenes midway through the opening period when the away fans unveiled a banner which mimicked sheep bleating and sparked the throwing of objects between the two sets of supporters.

That banner came after Napoli’s fans were pictured with another one on their ferry trip to largely rural Sardinia which read “sheep hunting”.

The match was stopped for seven minutes as both home and away ends supporters threw projectiles and flares.

Antonio Conte’s side were already leading at that point through Di Lorenzo’s wildly deflected 18th-minute opener, and Kvaratskhelia and Lukaku showed signs of a burgeoning partnership by setting each other up for the goals which sealed the three points by the 70th minute.

Buongiorno nodded home the fourth in stoppage time to make it a perfect night for Napoli and set up a mouth-watering clash with Juve.

Inter gave up their league lead as Denzel Dumfries saved a point for the champions with three minutes remaining after Dany Mota’s brilliant 81st minute header threatened to give Monza their first win under new coach Alessandro Nesta.

Simone Inzaghi’s unbeaten side, who would have moved a point above Napoli with a win, were uninspiring in a largely drab encounter at the U-Power Stadium and will need to improve at City on Wednesday night, with the Milan derby also coming up next weekend.

“We created some chances but weren’t able to take advantage. We were slower and not as on it as we normally are,” said Inzaghi to DAZN.

Lookman back with bang

Ademola Lookman made sure that Atalanta warmed up for their return to the Champions League with the winner in a 3-2 victory over Fiorentina.

Nigeria forward Lookman did not feature in Atalanta’s first three league matches after agitating for a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.

But the 26-year-old netted the decisive strike in stoppage time at the end of the first half, jinking through the Fiorentina defence before shooting past David de Gea, seconds after Charles De Ketelaere headed Atalanta level.

Lookman, the hat-trick hero from last season’s Europa League final triumph, also floated in a pinpoint cross for Mateo Retegui to head in Atalanta’s first equaliser in the 21st minute.

His immediate impact is great news for coach Gian Piero Gasperini, whose side host Arsenal on Thursday night and entertained their home fans in the newly-completed Gewiss Stadium.

“We’re very pleased to be playing in the Champions league this season,” added Lookman.

“We deserve it so we have to demonstrate that again on Thursday with the same drive, the same mentality that we showed today.”

Atalanta, whose most recent appearance in the Champions League was in 2021, played their first three Serie A fixtures away from Bergamo to allow the club to put the finishing touches to their redeveloped home.

They are eighth on six points, three ahead of 14th-placed Fiorentina who twice went ahead in the first half through Lucas Martinez Quarta and Moise Kean but are yet to win under new coach Raffaele Palladino.

Earlier Genoa snatched a 1-1 home draw with Roma in the final seconds to continue their positive start to the season.
