By-Election Results 2024: The Congress won two of the three seats in Himachal.

New Delhi:

The Opposition INDIA bloc won 10 of the 13 seats that went to polls across seven states, backing up their strong show in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP, which returned for a record third term at the Centre last month, managed to claim only two seats.

In Punjab, AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat scored a decisive victory in the Jalandhar West constituency, with a margin exceeding 23,000 votes. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, the TMC showcased its dominance by capturing all four seats contested.

Himachal Pradesh witnessed a notable debut as Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, secured victory in the Dehra constituency. The Congress further strengthened its position by claiming the Nalagarh seat, while the BJP managed to secure a win in Hamirpur.

Chief Minister Sukhu, after the win said that people of Himachal Pradesh have given a befitting reply to those hatching “conspiracies to topple the government”.

“People of Himachal gave us 40 seats in 2022. People have given a befitting reply to the kind of poaching that happened in state politics in the past,” Mr Sukhu said.

“This also gave the message that the people of the state are aware and awake and that such poaching will not work. Three independent MLAs had no reason to resign. They could have simply allied with the BJP, but even they learned their lesson,” he added.

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK’s Anniyur Siva won the Vikravandi assembly seat by a significant margin of nearly 60,000 votes. The Congress won both seats in Uttarakhand, while the BJP’s Kamslesh Pratap Shahi won the Amarwar seat in Madhya Pradesh.

Independent candidate Shankar Singh won the Rupauli assembly bypoll in Bihar’s Purnea, defeating JDU’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal by a margin of 8,246 votes.

These bypolls were the first since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which saw the BJP winning 240 seats – 32 short of the majority. The NDA, however, managed to cross the halfway mark of 272 with a total tally of 293 seats. The Congress-led INDIA bloc clinched 232 seats.

Polling for Assembly byelections was held in 13 seats across seven states on July 10

New Delhi:
Results of bypolls to 13 Assembly seats in seven states will be announced today. The electoral exercise was the first since the Lok Sabha polls, which saw the BJP falling short of a majority and the opposition bloc, INDIA, gaining strength.

Here are 10 points on Assembly bypoll results 2024:

  1. Polling for the Assembly byelections was held in 13 Assembly seats across seven states: Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh on July 10.

  2. The Assembly seats that went to polls were Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda and Maniktala in West Bengal; Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh; Badrinath and Manglaur in Uttarakhand; Jalandhar West in Punjab; Rupauli in Bihar; Vikravandi in Tamil Nadu and Amarwara in Madhya Pradesh. Four of these states are ruled by INDIA bloc constituents while the rest have a BJP or NDA government.

  3. In West Bengal, the stakes are high for both the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the BJP. The ruling party won the Maniktala seat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections while the BJP won Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, and Bagda. Later, the BJP MLAs switched to the Trinamool.

  4. The electoral exercise in Himachal Pradesh will decide the fate of many veterans and some debutants, including Chief Minister and Congress leader Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur from the Dehra constituency.

  5. In Uttarakhand, the Manglaur constituency is witnessing a three-cornered fight in the bypoll, which was held after the death of BSP MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari in October last year. The BJP has never won the Muslim- and Dalit-dominated Manglaur seat which has been held either by the Congress or the BSP so far.

  6. The bypoll in Punjab’s Jalandhar West assembly segment is being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann.

  7. The Bihar byelection was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA Bima Bharti, who had won the seat for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) several times in the past but quit the party recently to contest Lok Sabha elections on an RJD ticket.

  8. In Tamil Nadu’s Vikravandi assembly constituency, the bypoll was necessitated by the death of DMK legislator N Pughazhendhi on April 6. It is a triangular contest with ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s candidate Anniyur Siva (alias Sivashanmugam A) pitted against Pattali Makkal Katchi’s (PMK) C Anbumani and Naam Tamilar Katchi’s K Abinaya.

  9. The by-election in the Amarwara assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh Chhindwara district was held after three-time Congress MLA Kamlesh Shah crossed over to the BJP in March. The main contest in this Scheduled Tribes-reserved seat is between the BJP, which fielded Kamlesh Shah, the Congress’s Dheeran Shah Invati, and Gondwana Gantantra Party’s (GGP) Devraman Bhalavi.

In Bengal’s Dhupguri, CPM and Congress have joined forces to take on Trinamool

New Delhi:

Seven Assembly seats in six states will see counting of votes today for bye-elections held on September 5. These polls are being seen as an acid test for the Opposition bloc INDIA as it aims to take on the BJP in the Assembly polls this year and the general election next year.

The seven seats that went to the polls earlier this month are Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Puthuppally in Kerala, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura. The counting of votes begins at 8 am.

Among the seven seats, Dhanpur, Bageshwar and Dhupguri were held by the BJP. The seats in UP and Jharkhand were held by Samajwadi Party and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, respectively. Tripura’s Boxanagar seat and Kerala’s Puthupally were with the CPM and the Congress, respectively.

The Ghosi seat was vacated after sitting legislator and OBC leader Dara Singh Chauhan rejoined the BJP. The Akhilesh Yadav-led party is now trying to retain control on Ghosi.

In Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar, the bypolls were held after the death of four-time MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Das in April. Kerala’s Puthupally seat was vacated by the death of former Chief Minister and Congress veteran Oommen Chandy.

In Tripura, the CPM has announced that it will boycott the counting. It has alleged large-scale malpractice during voting in the two constituencies.

In West Bengal’s Dhupguri, the CPM and Congress have joined forces to take on the ruling Trinamool. Incidentally, all the three parties are part of the INDIA bloc.
