Former Indian cricket team spinner Harbhajan Singh did not include both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma while picking the top three batters in the world. The top pick for the cricketer, who won the 2007 T20 World Cup as well as the 2011 ODI World Cup, was the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. He also named former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis and West Indies great Brian Lara as his other two options. In a video that has gone viral on social media, Harbhajan was asked to choose the top three batters in the world and he went for three legendary options rather than any player who are currently playing the game.

Former Indian cricket team batter Robin Uthappa also did not include Rohit and Virat as he went with Sir Vivian Richards, Tendulkar and Lara as his three options.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch also picked Tendulkar and Lara with his third choice being the legendary Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting.

“Obviously, Sachin, the record that he had over… Ricky Ponting for the impact that he had on Australian cricket, Brian Lara, just the sheer entertaining value,” Finch said.

However, former India all-rounder Suresh Raina included both Rohit and Virat in his Top 3 along with England cricketer Joe Root.

Earlier, Harbhajan Singh congratulated Gautam Gambhir on his new innings as the Team India head coach.

“I am sure that your experience, energy, passion, aggression and talent will steer the team on the path of excellence. My best wishes to you. Good luck buddy,” wrote Harbhajan.

Anil Kumble commented: “Congratulations Gautam Gambhir. Wishing you the best!” Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa who was his opening partner in their 2014-IPL title winning campaign, also chipped in with a congratulatory message.

“Congratulations bro!! Can’t wait to see the men’s team flourish under your able guidance. Wishing you the best for the new role. Lots of love!!” Uthappa posted on X.

Test stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara wrote, “Congratulations and best wishes Gauti bhai!”

From an unbeaten 501 in a County match, to 400 not out in a single innings of a Test match, Brian Lara pulled off some incredible records during his playing career. Lara broke the record for must runs by a batter in a single innings of Test match not once, but twice. In 1994, he overtook compatriot Gary Sobers’ 365 and scored 375 against England at St. John’s. The record was broken 10 years later when Matthew Hayden smashed 385 against Zimbabwe.

However, Lara didn’t let it slide this time as he smashed an unbeaten 400 against England at the same venue where he overtook Sobers in the first place.

Now, 20 years down the road, Lara’s record still remains intact. In fact, the last batter to even cross 350 was Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 374 against South Africa in 2006.

However, Lara admitted that a few players from the current generation are capable enough to break his record. Lara picked two players each from England and India that can surpass his momentous feat.

“There were players in my time who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark – Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players,” Lara told The Daily Mail.

“How many aggressive players do you have playing today? Especially in the England team. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook. Maybe in the Indian team? Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill. If they find the right situation, the records could be broken – both of them,” he added.

Speaking on what inspired him to break the record twice, Lara suggested: “I fell in love with being that spectacle, reducing the opposition’s options, seeing them pretty much flat. I made that my forte – when I knew a team was down, I wasn’t going to give it away. I was going to take advantage of the situation. That was 375, 400, 501. It was very similar attitude to that of West Indies’ great bowlers. When you have a red ball in your hand and are bowling at 90 miles an hour, you know guys are going to be scared.”

West Indian batting great Brian Lara had predicted Afghanistan would reach the T20 World Cup semifinals nearly a month before the tournament began and now that the giant-slayers have made it, skipper Rashid Khan said he is immensely proud to have proved the legend right. Afghanistan continued their brilliant run at the T20 World Cup as they marched to their first-ever World Cup semifinal with an eight-wun win over Bangladesh in the last Super 8 clash.

“The only guy who put us in the semifinals was Brian Lara and we proved him right. When we met him at a welcome party, I told him we won’t let you down,” Rashid said at the post-match presentation.

Lara, in an interaction with PTI editors at its headquarters last month, had predicted that Afghanistan would be among the semifinalists in the mega-event.

“Afghanistan, they are capable of getting into the (last) four,” Lara had said, while picking his tournament favourites.

Rashid said the conviction that they could advance to the semifinals was ignited by their triumph over heavyweights New Zealand in the group stage.

“It’s a dream for us to be in the semifinals. The way we started the tournament, the belief came when we beat New Zealand. It’s unbelievable,” he recalled.

Afghanistan also picked up a historic win over Australia before beating Bangladesh in the final Super 8 fixture to set up semifinal date with South Africa on June 27.

Against Bangladesh, Afghanistan were restricted to 115/5 but the bowlers led by Naveen Ul Haq and Rashid propelled them to a thrilling eight-run win.

“We thought 130-135 was a good score but we fell 15 runs short. We knew they would come hard at us and we knew that is what we could take advantage of. We didn’t need to do anything extra, just be clear in our plans.

Pacers Naveen and Fazalhaq Farooqi have excelled with the new ball all through the campaign and Rashid couldn’t be happier.

“In T20s if you get a good start, it helps us in the middle overs. They have given great starts to us in the whole competition. It makes it easier for us to go harder at the batsmen.

“They have delivered, they were very clear in their minds,” Rashid said.

On the several rain interruptions that eventually led the match to be truncated, Rashid said they were mentally ready to pick all 10 wickets.

“Rain is something not in our hands but mentally we knew we have to play 20 overs and take 10 wickets.

“That’s the only way we could win. But Gulbadin, he had some cramps. But his wicket was invaluable to us,” he said.

The skipper reckoned there will be huge celebration back home.

“It’s a big achievement for us as well. We have done that at U-19 level but at this World Cup, I don’t have any words to describe the feeling back home. We have to go into the semis with a very clear mind and make sure we enjoy the occasion,” he said.

Shanto blames batters

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto conceded the team was once again let down by its batters.

“We bowled really well. As a bowling unit we did a lot of good things. But as a batting unit we made some poor decisions especially in the middle overs,” he admitted.

“Whole tournament, we bowled really well, especially Rishad the new guy came and bowled really well, I am really happy for him. As a batting unit we really need to improve a lot.”

Ahead of India’s 2024 ICC T20 World Cup Super Eights game against Bangladesh, Former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara backed the opening pair of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to come good during the game, saying that Bangladesh would not be much of a threat and Men in Blue will be 100 for no loss during the game. India will be taking on Bangladesh in their Super Eights clash at Antigua’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Saturday. India is in second place in Group 1 of Super Eights, with a win against Afghanistan and two points. Bangladesh is at the bottom place, having lost their game against Australia. This one is a crucial game for them to keep their Super Eights hopes alive while India will pretty much reach the semifinals with a win over Bangladesh.

The opening pair of Rohit and Virat has not fired so far in the tournament. While Rohit has scored just 76 runs in four innings including a fifty, Virat has been extremely underwhelming after a blockbuster Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, scoring just 29 runs in four innings, with 24 as his best score.

Speaking to Star Sports, Lara said that even though pacer Mustafizur Rahman is a great bowler and will threaten India, the experienced duo will be too much for Bangladesh.

“India is going to be 100 without loss in that match if they bat first, right? And even if they bat second, they are going to be 100 without loss. Of course, Fizz (Mustafizur) is an amazing bowler. He is going to come out and threaten but I just feel that India is just too much and that roller coaster and, you know, they just seem rolling every team at the moment and that’s how I think it is going to happen,” said Lara.

“India is very concerned about the opening partnership, and they are going to fix that against Bangladesh. I do not think that Bangladesh is going to be a threat,” he added.

Lara went on to praise the opening pair, saying that they are two of the best in T20Is and they are going to give India much-needed impetus during the knockout stages. He also pointed out that the ongoing tournament has not been dominated by batters and rather it is bowlers who have been at advantage.

“I think it is (Rohit-Virat pair) is going to give India that impetus that is needed going into the back end of the tournament of the semi-finals and the finals. So, this match, I think that those two great players, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are going to come to the fore,” said Lara.

“I think the Indian team expects a good opening partnership. Everything is falling into place. This World Cup is a World Cup where no team is very dominant because of the state of the pitches. But if India can solve the opening problem, and it is not a problem, it is the two best T20 players in the world, they are not going to run right now,” he concluded.

Squads:

India Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team will look to end more than a decade long wait for an ICC trophy at the upcoming T20 World Cup, starting June 2 in the West Indies and USA. India last won an ICC trophy in 2013, beating England in the Champions Trophy final under the leadership of MS Dhoni. With Rahul Dravid‘s tenure as head coach set to end after the T20 World Cup, the former India captain has one final chance to cement his legacy and bow out in style. Last year, Dravid was at the helm as India lost to Australia in the ODI World Cup final.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, former West Indies captain Brian Lara has shared a piece of advice for Dravid. Lara suggested that due to India’s constant faliures in ICC knockout games, Dravid needs to devise a plan to see off the latter stages of the tournament.

“Indian team, just looking from the outside, in previous Cups, be it T20 or 50-overs, I just feel they are lacking that final plan in terms of how they are going to go about. It doesn’t matter how many superstars you have; it matters how you are going to go about winning this World Cup, what plans you are going to have in place, and how you are going to structure your innings or attack. I hope Rahul Dravid can get his players together and can devise a plan for India to win T20 World Cup,” Lara said on Star Sports.

India will play Bangladesh in their only T20 World Cup warm-up game on Saturday in New York. It is expected that all the players, sans Virat Kohli, could feature as it doesn’t have an official status.

India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and T20 World Cup co-hosts USA.

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj. Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan.

A smiling face at every corner, adulation that reminds him of family and to top it all off, a spicy, delectable plate of ‘chhole bhature’. West Indies cricket great Brian Lara loves India and for a change, Bollywood has got nothing to do with it. The 55-year-old, who is in the country doing commentary for Star Sports in the ongoing IPL, took time out to visit the PTI headquarters for a free-wheeling interaction with its editors and did not hide his affection for the country where cricket is an obsession.

“I’m not a big Bollywood fan. I do come from a country with majority Indian population…So, there is a lot of interest in Bollywood. I’m not even an English movie fan. So unfortunately…Harry Potter and these things, I haven’t really seen,” he quipped with a wide grin on his face, turning on the charm offensive.

“But what I do like about India is the unconditional love,” he quickly added.

Arguably one of the greatest batters of all time and one of the most recognisable cricketers internationally, Lara said what makes his love for India enduring is the warmth with which he is welcomed here.

“I think when you come to India, the way how you’re treated, you know, and when you turn any corner there’s a smile on someone’s face just from seeing you. I think that is something that is refreshing and you know it’s also very positive,” he said.

“It has a positive effect on me being in India, being loved in a foreign country and the way that they…Walking in Miami on South Beach, everybody’s pushing you out of the way.

“But in India, it’s a whole different story, everybody pushing into you,” he said while trying to explain what makes India so special for him.

“So, I think that from someone who started playing the game for the adulation from my father and from my siblings to having the adulation in India is something that I love, but it’s also the serenity of the people,” he added.

However, not all his India experiences have been pleasant. Lara has no qualms conceding that the way his coaching stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad ended was rather “bad” but the West Indies icon still picked it as one of his favourite to make the IPL knockouts this year.

His other three picks being Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Chennai Super Kings.

“…I have to make it very clear because sometimes people will think your relationship with SRH was so bad but I would love to see SRH do well. I feel it is a continuation of something,” Lara said.

Coming back to ‘chhole bhature’, Lara said the popular north-Indian street food meal is very similar to something he is used to eating at home.

“I like it and it’s very close to a dish in Trinidad called Doubles. Yeah, so look it up, Trinidad Doubles and look at chhole bhature and it’s something very, very similar,” he said referring to a popular breakfast option back home.

“And I can tell you, when the Indian players come to Trinidad, they have our doubles, they love it,” he revealed.

Coaching over commentary

Lara is currently enjoying his commentary stint but it’s not without its fair share of challenges.

“One of the things, the challenges that I have is sort of getting excited and sort of creating excitement for the crowd when I believe something average has happened,” he said rather candidly.

“So, a guy plays a big cover drive and it’s inside edge for four and I have to get excited for it, it’s kind of tough,” he explained.

But then there are moments he enjoys too.

“But to be a part of the IPL and to be a part of a cricket game and say, for instance, when Shamar Joseph picked up those seven wickets in that Test match in Australia, and to be able to call that period is exciting in itself,” he recalled referring to the seven-wicket burst by Joseph while bowling with a broken toe.

What he truly craves to do, however, is coach young players. “You know, my number one, I think, experience that I have is coaching. I think working with young players and seeing them grow is wonderful…I don’t like being too critical of players and I like keeping my opinion sometimes behind closed doors, so it’s a learning experience for me being a commentator,” he said.

Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s Test career is just 17 games old but the great Brian Lara feels if there is anyone who can get close to his lofty feats, including the record 400 not out, it is the 22-year-old southpaw from India. Lara’s high praise for Jaiswal doesn’t come out of the blue. The left two-handers share a special bond, having spent a lot of time over the past year following their “4 am conversation” during the IPL when the West Indian was coaching Sunrisers Hyderabad and the young opener was in the Rajasthan Royals’ camp.

A lot has changed since IPL 2023 with Jaiswal now becoming an integral part of India’s Test and T20 team. His exploits in the longest format stand out as he averages close to 70 with three hundreds including two double tons in the recent home series against England. What has impressed Lara is Jaiswal’s ability to change gears as per the situation of the game.

“If I feel my records are threatened, Jaiswal has got a very good chance to do so. He has got capabilities, couple of double hundreds already. He is that good,” Lara told PTI editors at its headquarters in an interaction arranged by Star Sports where he is a commentator and expert for the ongoing IPL.

Lara, who recently turned 55, is one of the all-time greats of the game having amassed close to 12, 000 runs in Tests and over 10,000 runs in ODIs. His record of the highest individual total, 400 not out against England in 2004, still stands tall.

Lara fondly looked back at his first meeting with Jaiswal when asked about a light moment they shared on the sidelines of the Rajasthan Royals and SRH clash in the ongoing season.

“The only thing I can reveal about that (conversation) is I think he is an outstanding young cricketer. what I like about him is that he is very humble and willing to work. The first time I met him (last year), I immediately found myself attached to him.

“After the game (SRH vs Royals), I went to the hotel with a friend of mine from the Caribbean who knew Jos Buttler. It was midnight and Jaiswal found me. I promise you I left the hotel at 4 in the morning.

“He just wanted to hear more and more and more. That is one of his amazing traits. His ability to want to learn as much as possible. Our conversations are about trying to make him a better cricketer. I am available for anyone that has my number. I am happy to talk cricket.” Being a left-hander himself, it is natural for Lara to be biased towards that tribe. Another southpaw he has great admiration for is Abhishek Sharma with whom he spent time at SRH.

“Again he is someone who I met while I was batting coach of SRH. I spent two years there. I am allowed to a bit biased when I see a left-hander, I just love a left-hander. Myself and Abhishek have developed a very good relationship, these youngsters are very humble. they want to learn.

“What I like about these two, they want to get to great heights. I have great admiration for both.” The legend from Trinidad reckons that usually records are threatened by batters who score quickly and Jaiswal has that ability along with the hunger to bat long.

His 400 not out has not been surpassed in 20 years and Lara hopes he is still around to see the day when his record is broken.

“I think now, the pace that these guys are batting at. And you look at the guys over the years who have challenged that 300-mark and plus. It’s Chris Gayle. It’s Virender Sehwag. It’s Sanath Jayasuriya, It’s Inzamam-ul-Haq. It’s Matthew Hayden. These are guys who destroy bowling attacks.

“…you would not say that for a Rahul Dravid or Steve Smith in the present case. But a player who likes to score quickly, will have an opportunity. You know, Jaiswal, I mean, I was in Australia when David Warner came close and you know, he’s an aggressive player.

“So I believe yes, I think it will be broken at some point in time. I think it has to be that person’s destiny. Everything has to fall into place. And… I look forward to that time. I hope it happens, while I’m still around,” he said.

Find A Structured Way Of T20 Take Over: Brian Lara Urges ICC To Save Test Cricket https://artifex.news/find-a-structured-way-of-t20-take-over-brian-lara-urges-icc-to-save-test-cricket-5618161/ Wed, 08 May 2024 15:23:21 +0000 https://artifex.news/find-a-structured-way-of-t20-take-over-brian-lara-urges-icc-to-save-test-cricket-5618161/ Read More “Find A Structured Way Of T20 Take Over: Brian Lara Urges ICC To Save Test Cricket” »

]]>

Admitting that T20 leagues have devoured a lot of Test cricket’s space, West Indian legend Brian Lara has appealed to the ICC to step in to give a structure to the unrelenting invasion of the franchise-based tournaments. In the latest instance that fuelled questions over the relevance of Tests, South Africa recently sent an under-strength squad to New Zealand as their first-choice players were involved in the SA20 at home. “I think ICC (should) put their head together and find a way where franchise cricket takes over, but in a much more structured way and not in terms of the free fall that is going on at the moment,” Lara said in an interaction with PTI editors at its headquarters which was facilitated by Star Sports where he is a commentator and expert for the ongoing IPL.

“I hope the astute thinkers could find a way to make sure that it (Test) remains relevant. I like the Test Championship and I think it is important to make sure that the game remains relevant.” So, is cricket now taking the football route where leagues take precedence over international assignments? While Lara agreed in principle to the point, he found differences too in the two models.

“Well, yes (cricket following the football way). Let’s just look at football. For instance, other than the big cups – European cups, World Cup, South American cups – they may have a few friendlies. So, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, they have their footballers generally for 11 months of the year.

“That seems to be working for football. It’s taken off the burden as well for each country to be finding ways of making money by having football matches,” Lara began.

But Lara said the wealth being accumulated among three big nations – India, Australia and England – presented a rather different scenario in cricket.

“The West Indies now is in a situation where our gate receipts can’t make us survive. So, we are very thankful whenever India tours the West Indies. It’s a lot of TV rights money passing around which is great.

“So, it’s hard to see outside of the big three – Australia, England and India – how countries are going to survive when economically it’s tough for them.” From a cricketing perspective, the elegant left-hander said teams often not having their best players available also make things tough for teams outside the big three.

Lara might have had someone like Trent Boult in mind as the pacer recently turned down New Zealand central contract to become a T20 freelancer.

“Secondly, they (teams) don’t have their best players playing because their best players are making a living for their family elsewhere (leagues),” he added.

In March this year, BCCI had introduced a Test Cricket Incentive Scheme, an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee, to ensure parity with match fees in other formats and leagues.

Lara welcomed the step but added that bringing spectators to the ground was equally paramount to sustain the game and the sponsors’ interest.

“Incentivizing, or what BCCI is doing because they have the money, is one aspect of it. Of course, remuneration to the players is great to keep them interested in the game.

“But when you’re walking to a Test match and there’s nobody at that Test match, then it’s not encouraging. Try to get them (crowd) back into the ground,” said Lara.

The Trinidadian said having a stadium packed to the rafters is important from the sponsors’ view as well.

“I’m almost sure you’ve experienced it in India, where a sponsor preferred to spend his money on three hours of cricket instead of five days of cricket. ‘Hey, you have five days to promote your product.’ “The corporate person will say: ‘But there’s nobody to promote it to. Give me three hours. I will pay even more money.’ So, I think getting the crowd back is also something that should be discussed,” he explained.

While Lara has little doubt that the T20 version caters to spectators’ demands, he said the modern-day viewers should be educated about the unique ebbs and flow of five-day cricket.

“Well, I hope it hasn’t (Test not losing relevance). The shorter version of the game is taken over and it is entertainment and that’s what people look for. We haven’t educated the present-day public about the importance of batting a session and not losing a wicket.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Test career is just nine games old but the great Brian Lara feels if there is anyone who can get close to his lofty feats, including the record 400 not out, it is the 22-year-old southpaw from India.

Lara, who recently turned 55, is one of the all-time greats of the game having amassed close to 12,000 runs in Tests and over 10,000 runs in ODIs.

I am happy to talk cricket.”

Being a left-hander himself, it is natural for Lara to be biased towards that tribe.

I have great admiration for both.”

The legend from Trinidad reckons that usually records are threatened by batters who score quickly and Jaiswal has that ability along with the hunger to bat long.

India head coach Rahul Dravid will need a specific plan to get the best out of superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup in the Americas next month, the great Brian Lara said on Tuesday. As many as eight players from the 2022 edition of the ICC event find a place in the squad with the team continuing to back the unmatched experience of Kohli and Rohit.

“Sometimes when you have a team with a lot of superstars, you forget the plan and you believe that the superstars can do it. They just have to turn up. Sometimes you may feel, as a coach, intimidated, telling Sir Vivian Richards or Virat Kohli, you know exactly what you expect of them,” Lara said in an interaction with PTI editors at its headquarters which was facilitated by Star Sports.

Asked about the composition of the India squad, Lara gave the example of the highly experienced West Indies squad for the ODI World Cup in 1987 when Sir Vivian Richards-led side could not reach the semifinals.

“First of all, in terms of the players that were selected in the squad, let me start by saying that that’s a dilemma that a lot of countries have faced in the past. The West Indies in 1988 (1987 actually) is one example,” he said.

“Obviously when you have such great players, you want to stick to that experience because you feel that they can do it and there’s nothing wrong with it,” he said referring to Kohli and Rohit.

Lara said given the big names that make the Indian squad, Dravid will have his hands full on the planning front.

“You’ve got a lot of exciting young players coming out and you also have that sort of conundrum. India have gone with a team that has experience. My advice, and it’s not my criticism, it’s my advice, to Rahul Dravid is to make sure and have a plan,” Lara stated.

While he also agreed that Rinku Singh‘s omission was pure hard luck, Lara firmly believed that the team under Rohit Sharma could go the distance in this edition.

“The team is capable of winning the World Cup. Yes, it’s a team that have maybe a couple of youngsters missing because of the situation. But I still believe that if they plan properly. India could win the World Cup,” Lara said.
