Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in his Republic Day address at Dibrugarh today, once again raised the issue of BR Ambedkar, claiming India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, kept him out of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution. Mr Sarma claimed this while emphasizing on the challenges Dr Ambedkar faced while drafting the Constitution.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar is the founder of our Constitution. His inclusion in the constituency assembly had many challenges. His name was not there in the first list of members of Constituent assembly who were to draft the constitution,” the Chief Minister said.

A Dalit leader from East Bengal, Jogendranath Mondal, proposed Dr Ambedkar’s name in his place and only after that he had the opportunity to be part of the historic work, he said.

“Today I remember a statement of Pandit Nehru about the inclusion of Ambedkar. Nehru had claimed that Ambedkar was a trouble-maker and wanted to keep him outside the constituent assembly,” he said.

The Chief Minister further claimed that Ambedkar was included because Mahatma Gandhi recognised the merit in him and trusted his ability and took a stand against the position Nehru had taken.

“This decision of Gandhi was proved to be fruitful by the constituent assembly led by Ambedkar who gave us a constitution based on equality and brotherhood,” he added.

The Chief Minister’s statement has drawn sharp reactions from the Congress.

Leader of Opposition in Assam assembly Debabrata Saikia condemned the remarks and alleged it was an attempt to defame Babasaheb Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru by distorting the truth.

“Initially Ambedkar was elected to constituency assembly from Bengal. But after partition his constituency went to Pakistan and he has to vacate his seat. It was Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel who went to Gandhi-ji to discuss this. After this Ambedkar was offered a seat in the constituent assembly by vacating a seat from Pune,” Mr Saikia told reporters.

Manish Sisodia and Manoj Tiwari’s war of words broke out on X

New Delhi:

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia on Monday attacked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari for sharing a clipped video of his party colleague and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Mr Tiwari, in a post on X, shared a 9-second clip in which Mr Kejriwal was heard saying that “someone was saying that whoever has written the Constitution must be drunk while writing it”. His post came amid a massive row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar – known as the architect of the Indian Constitution.

“I found this video of the head of Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party. After listening to which everyone will be able to see his true colours,” Mr Tiwari, a three-time MP from North East Delhi, wrote.

Mr Sisodia, who has filed a defamation case against Mr Tiwari in the past, countered him and shared the full video of Mr Kejriwal’s speech.

In the 19-second video, which was reportedly shot 12 years ago, Mr Kejriwal was heard talking about the Constitution of the Congress party and not about the Indian Constitution.

“Constitution of Congress party says no worker shall consume liquor. Someone amongst us said the one who wrote the Constitution must have been drunk while writing it,” he said.

Mr Sisodia asked Mr Tiwari to stop behaving like “cheap trolls”.

“You are an MP, have some shame. You are tweeting lies. If not yourself, at least respect the post of an MP,” the former Delhi deputy chief minister said.

Mr Tiwari responded to the AAP leader, saying there should be “decorum” in a debate. “You got so angry that you called me shameless”.

“If the members of Congress wrote the Constitution of the party after drinking alcohol, then how can Arvind Kejriwal interpret it to mean that “whoever wrote the Constitution, wrote it after drinking alcohol”. What is the meaning of “whoever wrote the Constitution”?,” Mr Tiwari added.

“How can Arvind Kejriwal dare to say this? Is there a difference between the Constitution of India and Congress’ Constitution or not,” he asked.

The war of words between the two leaders broke out days after a controversy erupted over Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar during the recently concluded Winter Session of parliament.

In his address to the Rajya Sabha during the debate to mark 75 years of the Constitution last week, Mr Shah said taking BR Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” now.

“It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” the senior BJP leader said.

“Take his name 100 times more, but I want to say what are your sentiments about him,” he said.

The AAP, Congress and other Opposition parties have alleged that Mr Shah had insulted the Dalit icon and demanded his resignation and an apology.

Mr Shah, however, said the Opposition leaders had twisted his remarks.

Vishnu Deo Sai said the e Congress did not allow BR Ambedkar’s portrait in parliament.

New Delhi:

The Congress has insulted BR Ambedkar in his lifetime and is in no position to point fingers at anyone, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said today in the backdrop of the row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about the architect of the Indian constitution.

Asked about the matter in an exclusive interview, Mr Sai — a tribal leader — said it was not possible that anyone from the BJP would insult Ambedkar. “We need to look at what the Union Home Minister said in entirety,” he added.

The BJP, Mr Sai said, has shown huge respect to Ambedkar, no matter who headed the government — Atal Bihari Vajpayee or Narendra Modi.

“The Congress did not even allow his portrait in the country’s parliament. When he was alive, they insulted him repeatedly. But when our government came to power, we established the places associated with his life as five pilgrim centres,” Mr Sai told NDTV.

“Today in Mau where he was born, and in London where he was educated, we have set up plaques in his memory. And so we did in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi,” he added.

Addressing the House during the debate to mark 75 years of the Constitution last week, Mr Shah had said taking BR Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” now.

“It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” he said.

It had sparked a huge row during the Winter Session of parliament, with the Opposition uniting to allege that was an insult to Ambedkar and demanding Mr Shah’s resignation.

The BJP rebuttal was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, in a series of tweets, said the Congress and its “rotten ecosystem” were “gravely mistaken” if they thought “malicious lies” could hide their insult of BR Ambedkar.

We will continue the protest until Home Minister Amit Shah apologizes, said Saugata Roy.

New Delhi:

TMC MP Saugata Roy said the opposition will continue their protest in Parliament tomorrow against the Union Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Babasaheb Ambedkar.

“We will protest in Parliament tomorrow. We will continue the protest until Home Minister Amit Shah apologizes for his remarks on Dr BR Ambedkar…,” he told reporters here.

A massive political row has erupted over Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar during his speech in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Congress has accused Shah of being anti-Ambedkar and has demanded his resignation.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha LoP and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday criticised Shah’s remark on Babasaheb Ambedkar demanding an apology from Shah for his remarks during the Constitution debate in the Rajya Sabha.

While addressing a press conference in the national capital, Mr Kharge also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack Mr Shah by midnight if he truly respects Ambedkar.

“We demand that Amit Shah should apologize and if PM Modi has faith in Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar then he should be sacked by midnight… He has no right to remain in the cabinet, he should be sacked only then people will remain silent, otherwise, people will protest. People are ready to sacrifice their lives for Dr BR Ambedkar,” he said.

Meanwhile, accusing the Congress of being “anti-BR Ambedkar, anti-reservation and anti-Constitution,” Mr Shah on Wednesday said the opposition party has been presenting facts about his speech in Rajya Sabha in a distorted way.

Addressing a press conference here, Amit Shah also attacked Congress over the Emergency and said the discussion in Parliament on 150 years of the Constitution “proved how the Congress opposed Baba Saheb Ambedkar.”

“Since yesterday, Congress has been presenting the facts in a distorted way and I condemn it… Congress is anti-BR Ambedkar, it is against reservation and the Constitution. Congress also insulted Veer Savarkar. By imposing an Emergency, they violated all Constitutional values,” he said.

“A discussion was held over the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. During this, we also held discussions over the country’s achievements in the last 75 years. It is obvious that parties and people will have different points of view on different issues. But discussion should always be held based on facts,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended Amit Shah’s remarks and said that the union minister exposed the Congress’ “dark history of insulting” Baba Saheb Ambedkar after “which they were clearly stung and stunned” by the facts he presented.

The Trinamool Congress has moved a privilege motion against Home Minister Amit Shah

New Delhi:

Amid the massive row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dalit icon BR Ambedkar, the Trinamool Congress has moved a privilege notice against him and said he had undermined the legacy of the Constitution’s architect and Parliament’s dignity.

Derek O’Brien, leader of the Trinamool Congress in Rajya Sabha, has moved the notice under Rule 187. The privilege notice comes amid an all-out Opposition offensive against the Home Minister, accusing him of insulting the Dalit icon in his speech in the Upper House yesterday.

While speaking during the debate to mark 75 years of the Constitution, Mr Shah yesterday said that taking BR Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” for Opposition leaders now. “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” he said. “Take his name 100 times more, but I want to say what are your sentiments about him.” Mr Shah said BR Ambedkar had to resign from the first Cabinet following his disagreement with the Jawaharlal Nehru-led government.

The remarks sparked a huge row, with leaders of the Congress and other Opposition parties accusing Mr Shah of insulting the Dalit icon. When the Parliament met today, MPs from Opposition parties, held photos of BR Ambedkar and staged a protest. While BJP leaders accused the Congress of circulating a short video clip that did not show Mr Shah’s remarks on how the Congress allegedly sidelined BR Ambedkar, Opposition leaders stepped up the attack on the ruling party and demanded the Home Minister’s resignation.

As the Opposition tried to corner the government and demanded Mr Shah’s resignation and an apology, the BJP leadership launched a counterstrike led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a six-point thread on X, the Prime Minister said the Congress and its “rotten ecosystem” were “gravely mistaken” if they thought “malicious lies” could hide their insult of the architect of the Constitution. “If the Congress and its rotten ecosystem think their malicious lies can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insult towards Dr. Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken! The people of India have seen time and again how one Party, led by one dynasty, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and humiliate the SC/ST communities,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister added in his post that the list of the Congress’s “sins” towards BR Ambedkar includes: “getting him defeated in elections not once but twice, Pandit Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue, denying him a Bharat Ratna, denying his portrait a place of pride in Parliament’s Central Hall.”

Earlier, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee slammed the Home Minister, saying that the “mask has fallen”. “As Parliament reflects on 75 glorious years of the Constitution, HM @AmitShah chose to TARNISH this occasion with DEROGATORY remarks against Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, that too in the temple of Democracy. This is a display of BJP’s casteist and anti-Dalit mindset. If this is how they behave after being reduced to 240 seats, imagine the damage they would’ve inflicted if their dream of 400 seats had been realised. They’d have rewritten history to entirely erase Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions,” she said in a post on X.

“HM Amit Shah’s remarks are an insult to the millions who look up to Babasaheb for guidance and inspiration. But what else can you expect from a party that has internalised hate and bigotry? Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is the Father of the Constitution, this outrageous remark is not only an outright attack on him but all members of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution, which symbolised India’s unity in diversity with members from all castes, creeds, ethnicities, and religions,” Ms Banerjee said.

Someone wrote the same speech for Nirmala Sitharaman, Hardeep Singh Puri, JP Nadda, Bhupinder Yadav and Amit Shah, all the speeches are the same. ‘One Nation, One Poll’ Bill Changes The Structure Of The Constitution: Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav

Parliament Winter Session Update
On ‘One Nation One Poll’ Bill not getting the majority votes in the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Imran Masood congratulated BJP MPs for absenteeism. He said, the BJP wants to “destroy the multi-party system” in the country.

“As soon as it was tabled (in Lok Sabha), it became clear that it cannot be passed. 360 MPs are required to get this passed but 20 MPs of their (NDA) total strength were absent since this is lethal for the country. You are dealing a blow to the soul of the Constitution. You want to break the federal structure…You are preparing to finish the small parties. In 7-10 years, small parties would be finished,” he said.

Parliament Winter Session Update: Congress’ Adjournment Motion Notice Over Amit Shah’s Remarks
Congress MP Manickam Tagore has given an Adjournment Motion Notice in Lok Sabha to discuss Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks regarding Dr BR Ambedkar.

In his notice, Mr Tagore wrote, “He (Amit Shah) further trivialized Dr. Ambedkar’s monumental contribution by suggesting that those who invoke his name as frequently as the Congress does would attain “swarg” (heaven). This blasphemous statement is an attempt to undermine Dr. Ambedkar’s pivotal role in drafting the Indian Constitution, which guarantees equality, justice, and dignity for all citizens, especially the marginalized communities.”

The Congress Party has urged the House to “take a strong stand against this disrespect” and has demanded an unqualified apology.

Recap: “Curtailed Freedom Of Expression”: Union Home Minister Amit Shah Attacks Congress
Union home minister Amit Shah argued that if the Congress could change the constitution 77 times and even introduce a clause that curtails freedom of expression, they cannot object to the ‘One Nation, One Poll’ Bill on the ground that it would require constitutional amendment.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during the two-day Constitution debate, Mr Shah said, “Another amendment was brought by Indira Gandhi which gave Parliament the power to curtail the fundamental rights of the citizens”.

Then mentioning Article 19A, he questioned why it was brought in. “To curtail the freedom of expression,” he added amid loud protest from Congress members.

Recap: ‘One Nation, One Poll’ Bill Tabled In Lok Sabha
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the ‘One Nation, One Poll’, a constitutional amendment bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Once approved, the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly referred to as the Bill on ‘One Nation, One Poll’, will ensure Lok Sabha, Assembly, and local body (urban or rural) elections are held in the same year, if not at the same time. This was the norm from independence to 1967.

To pass a bill, two-third majority (307 votes) required. 269 voted in favour of the motion while 198 members opposed it.

For now, the bill will be sent to a joint committee for “wider consultation”. The composition of the joint committee – which will also include Rajya Sabha MPs – will be settled by Speaker Om Birla in 48 hours (Thursday). This deadline is key because this Parliament session ends Friday. If a committee is not named and tasked, the bill lapses and must be re-introduced in the next session.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Amit Shah has said something very disgusting.

New Delhi:

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha during a debate on the Constitution show that the BJP and the RSS leaders have a “lot of hatred” for B R Ambedkar and demanded an apology from him.

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said those who believe in Manusmriti will definitely be at odds with Ambedkar.

Congress general secretary-in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a video snippet on X from Mr Shah’s speech in the upper house.

“Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven),” Mr Shah said, taking a swipe at the opposition.

Mr Shah said the BJP is happy that the Congress is taking Ambedkar’s name but the party should also speak about its real sentiments towards him. He pointed out how Ambedkar had to resign from the first Cabinet citing his disagreement with the then Congress-led government’s policies including Article 370.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge lashed out at Amit Shah, saying the “insult” of Babasaheb by the home minister “has once again proven that the BJP-RSS were against the tricolour, their forefathers opposed the Ashok Chakra and the people of the Sangh Parivar wanted to implement Manusmriti instead of the Constitution of India from the very first day”.

“Babasaheb Dr Ambedkar Ji did not allow this to happen, that is why there is so much hatred towards him,” Mr Kharge said.

“The ministers of the Modi government should understand carefully that for crores of people like me, Babasaheb Ambedkar is no less than God… He is and will always be the messiah of Dalits, tribals, backward classes, minorities and the poor,” Mr Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X.

In a post on X, Mr Ramesh said, “Amit Shah has said something very disgusting. This shows that the BJP and RSS leaders have a lot of hatred for Baba Saheb Ambedkar.” “The hatred is such that they are annoyed even by his name. These are the same people whose ancestors used to burn the effigies of Baba Saheb, who themselves used to talk about changing the Constitution given by Baba Saheb,” the Congress leader said.

As the people taught them a lesson, they are now annoyed with those who take Baba Saheb’s name, he said.

“Shameful! Amit Shah should apologise to the country for this,” Mr Ramesh asserted.

Congress general secretary in-charge organisation K C Venugopal also hit out at Amit Shah over his remarks.

“HM Amit Shah, in case you didn’t know – Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is equivalent to God and the Constitution he drafted is a Holy Book for crores of people across the world. How dare you speak about Dr. Ambedkar with such disdain?” he said.

“The BJP’s disgust towards Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was always well known, and the Home Minister’s pathetic statements in the Rajya Sabha today further confirm how much they hate and detest Dr. Ambedkar,” Venugopal alleged in a post on X.

The worshippers of Manusmriti will always have scorn towards Ambedkar, who rejected the horrible ideas espoused by the casteist RSS and their Manusmriti, he said.

“Those who spoke of changing the Constitution if they won 400+ seats, are now openly mocking our country’s reverence for Dr. Ambedkar,” Mr Venugopal said.

Those who pretended to bow before him could not hide their true feelings for too long, and this dangerous statement from the BJP top brass shows they have lost the right to speak about Ambedkar ever again, he said.

The home minister attacked the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, saying the party treated the Constitution as the “private fiefdom” of one family and “played fraud” with Parliament.

Concluding a two-day debate on the “Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India”, Shah ripped into the Congress for its appeasement politics and claimed that the party wanted to breach the 50 per cent quota limit to provide reservation to Muslims.

He also asked the Congress if it supported the Muslim personal law and alleged that the party never worked for the welfare of the backward classes. Amit Shah asserted that the BJP has already brought in a common civil code (Uniform Civil Code) in Uttarakhand and will implement it in all states.

BJP Chief JP Nadda was addressing an Intellectual Meeting at Shivamogga in Karnataka on Tuesday.

Shivamogga, Karnataka:

Commenting on reservations for Muslims, BJP President J.P. Nadda said on Tuesday that B.R. Ambedkar said there is no place for reservation based on religious lines.

Addressing an Intellectual Meeting at Shivamogga in Karnataka, the BJP President said the Congress government in the state headed by CM Siddaramaiah gave 4 per cent reservations to Muslims from the OBC quota.

“In undivided Andhra Pradesh, they tried multiple times to rob the reservation for the SC, ST, and OBC categories and to give it to the Muslim community. We are not against Muslims. B.R. Ambedkar clearly stated that there is no place for reservation on the basis of religion. The development shows the vicious and divisive design that people have,” he said.

“CM Siddaramaiah will only talk about divisive politics and religion, nothing beyond that. His only agenda is to divide communities. Siddaramaiah always says the state is not getting its due. What he is saying is correct. Siddaramaiah will never get this due. They don’t believe in ‘mission’, they only believe in ‘commission’, which they will never get,” Mr Nadda said.

The BJP chief also said that there has been a rise of 275 per cent in funds for development projects allocated to Karnataka as compared to the UPA era.

“Rs 8,000 crore was spent on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. The Bengaluru suburban railway project has been allocated Rs 15,700 crore. Under the Bharat Mala project, 614 km of highways are being constructed in the state,” Mr Nadda said.

Besides, the Bengaluru airport was provided Rs 5,000 crore while the Shivamogga airport was allotted Rs 450 crore, he said, adding that more than Rs 14,000 crore was released for smart cities in Karnataka.

“The opposition has got nothing to say. They only try to save the corrupt people,” Mr Nadda said.

“The opposition leaders have gone into deep depression as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that this time the NDA will cross the 400-seat mark. The opposition stands exposed in its design to divide India,” he added.

However bad a Constitution may be, it may turn out to be good if those responsible for its functioning happen to be a “good lot,” Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud said while citing B. R. Ambedkar and hailing his idea of constitutionalism as being responsible for dismantling deeply entrenched caste hierarchy in India.

The CJI made the observations during his keynote address at the Sixth International Conference on the ‘Unfinished Legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’ at the Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, in the U.S. on October 22.

The CJI highlighted the idea of constitutionalism of Ambedkar, who headed the committee tasked to frame the Indian Constitution and said it was instrumental in transforming Indian society by dismantling deeply entrenched caste hierarchy and promoting social, economic and political empowerment of marginalised groups.

“Ambedkar’s legacy continues to shape the constitutional values of modern India, serving as a beacon for social reform and the pursuit of justice for all,” he said.

He cited Ambedkar, who had said however good a Constitution may be, it is sure to turn out bad because those who are called to work it happen to be a bad lot.

“However bad a Constitution may be, it may turn out to be good if those who are called to work it happen to be a good lot,” the CJI said quoting Ambedkar.

The CJI, who is in the USA, was also felicitated with the ‘Award for Global Leadership’ by the Center on the Legal Profession, Harvard Law School on Saturday.

The announcement about CJI Chandrachud being chosen as the recipient of the award was made on January 11, 2023 in an online ceremony.

He was present at the Harvard Law School on Saturday for a fireside chat with David Wilkins, Professor at Harvard Law School and Faculty Director, Center on the Legal Profession.
