It was a mundane performance by SunRisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Rider in the Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2024 in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. For a side, that now has the top highest scores in the IPL, SunRisers Hyderabad’s decision to bat first against Kolkata Knight Riders stemmed from the belief that they would be able to back their strength However, what happened was quite the opposite. KKR’s Mitchell Starc came to the party at the right time as SRH were all out for just 159. KKR reached the target in less than 14 overs.

Kavya Maran, SRH owner, has been a constant presence in her team’s matches throughout the IPL 2024. She was clearly not happy with the display of her team. However, one particular expression of hers has been widely shared. It was when SRH lost a review against KKR’s Sunil Narine in the third over. The appeal was for a LBW off the bowling of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but DRS showed that the ball was pitched outside leg.

It surprised Maran.

Unbeaten half-centuries by captain Shreyas Iyer (58*) and Venkatesh Iyer (51*) guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a crushing eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 and place in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at Narendra Modi Stadium here on Tuesday.

Hyderabad will have another chance to face KKR in the final as they will next take on the winner of the Eliminator match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai on Friday.

Chasing 160, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine gave KKR an electric start in the Powerplay overs as the due scored runs at a run rate of over 10 runs per over.

The first-wicket partnership lasted for 44 runs in 20 balls before T. Natrajan made inroads in the fourth over. The pacer removed Gurbaz at the score of 23 to bring the side back in the game after the thundering start in the chase.

Venkatesh Iyer joined Narine in the middle and kept the momentum going as they added 23 runs before Pat Cummins got Narine (21) in his first over into the attack just after the powerplay.

Shreyas Iyer walked out to bat at No. 4 and built the match-winning partnership for the side that allowed them to chase the total with 38 balls to spare.

Shreyas (58*) and Venkatesh (51*) accumulated an unbeaten 97-run partnership for the third wicket and also smashed their individual fifties during the successful run-chase. Both players hit four sixes and five fours each as they went berserk to take their side to the final.

Earlier, KKR restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to 159 all out in 19.3 overs after the latter decided to bat first.

Rovman Powell was trapped LBW on the last ball with RR needing two runs vs SRH.© X (Twitter)

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) stole a win from the jaws of defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday, edging out Rajasthan Royals (RR) by a solitary run. With two needed off the last ball in a 202-run chase, Rovman Powell failed to connect with Bhuvneshwar Kumar‘s low full toss and was trapped LBW. While Powell quickly took a review, the decision was upheld later by the TV umpire. However, even if the West Indies all-rounder had managed to had been successful with his review, it would not have changed the outcome of the match.

For the unversed, as per ICC’s playing conditions, the Appendix D rule suggests that the ball becomes dead once the umpire has signalled out.

“If following a Player Review request, an original decision of ‘Out’ is changed to ‘Not Out’, then the ball is still deemed to have become dead when the original decision was made. The batting side, while benefiting from the reversal of the dismissal, shall not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued from the delivery had the on-field umpire originally,” the law suggests.

While RR would’ve still lost the match had Powell’s review had been successful, fans were left wondering the outcome of the match had he been given not out.

Sharing his views on the same, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn took a leaf out of baseball‘s rule book to eradicate confusion in such scenarios.

“We need to basically play in baseball style. Consider the ball not dead until play has come to a stop. So essentially, run if you’re the batting team and continue to field if you’re the bowling team. Then we address the LBW or caught off no-ball etc after. Out if out, runs awarded if LBW or caught was not out,” Steyn wrote in a post on X.

On the disappointing loss to SRH, RR captain Sanju Samson said after the game: “Knowing the nature of the IPL, you never win the game until you actually win the game.”

Surnisers Hyderabad secured a thrilling 1-run victory against Rajasthan Royals, thanks to Bhunveshwar Kumar’s heroics with the ball. The veteran seamer dismissed Royals’ Rovman Powell on the last ball of the over to help his side secure a victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match on Thursday. As the victory brought an end to the Sunrisers’ 2-game losing streak, the franchise’s owner Kavya Maran, couldn’t hide her delight in the stands. As the cameras focused on Maran, she could be seen jumping with joy, celebrating her team’s victory against the table-toppers.

Bhuvneshwar was the Player of the Match for SRH, producing figures of 3/41 while picking three extremely important wickets for his side. The Hyderabad franchise, which remains in a tight battle for a spot in the playoffs, will truly be relieved with the win, and the importance of the result can be understood by looking at Maran’s reaction.

The victory, which was Sunrisers’ 6th in 10 matches, takes them a place above 5-time champions Chennai Super Kings to the 5th spot in the points table.

Bhuvneshwar, when asked about the thought process behind his final over approach, said he was only focussing on delivering two good balls.

“I think that’s my nature, I wasn’t thinking much about the result in the last over. There was no discussion in the last over, was just focussed on the process. Was thinking just about bowling two good balls, anything could have happened. I wasn’t thinking much, was just focussed on the process. The ball swung so much today, can’t really pinpoint, really enjoyed bowling. Luckily got wickets today. When the season started my thought process was different but it changed when the batters played in such a way. My thought process changed completely to be honest (from the time the time the season started to today),” he said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is happy seeing the team’s bowling unit take the back seat for a change, with the batters going gung-ho in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. But, Bhuvi isn’t someone who is going to let the batters take all the credit, as for him, it’s the bowling unit that delivers ‘championships’ while the batting units only provide ‘sponsorships’. Bhuvneshwar made the statement after SRH’s thumping victory against Delhi Capitals on Sunday in a contest where the veteran seamer’s team scored 260-plus runs for the third time in this campaign. (IPL 2024 Points Table)

“When you’re defending those many runs, we accepted that we will go for plenty of runs. We wanted to keep executing our plans. Just a matter of time before I start picking up wickets and things start going right,” Bhuvi said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

The seamer also held a big praise for teammate T Natarajan who has done well with his bowling performances this season, though it’s the batting unit that has been dominating headlines.

“We know how good he’s (Natarajan) with his yorkers, he’s a silent guy who keeps working hard. He’s truly a matchwinner. Probably the first time our batting has clicked so well in so many years, as a bowling unit we are happy to take a bit of a backseat. We’ll feel like a score like 220-200 is less but yea great that the batting unit is clicking. Conditions don’t matter, they keep doing the same thing even in the nets,” Bhuvneshwar added.

Though Bhuvneshwar was full of praise for Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma for the sort of starts they’ve given to SRH this season, he also maintained that the bowlers win championships.

“You don’t think much about where the ball is going while bowling in the nets but yes, they give us some nice practice, especially Abhishek and Travis Head. Bowling is something that wins you matches, not sure who said it but they said ‘batting wins you sponsorships and bowling wins you championships’, I think that’s a great saying. The way we executed our plans is great,” he concluded.

Chennai Super Kings fluffed their lines during their batting innings and then were struck by a tornado named Abhishek Sharma whose 37 off 12 balls put Sunrisers Hyderabad on course of their comfortable six wicket victory against the defending champions in an IPL match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday on Friday. The SRH bowlers were very disciplined while restricting CSK to 165 for 5 in 20 overs with only 37 being scored off last five overs. If 37 off last five was a poor effort from CSK, young southpaw Abhishek, who is having a great tournament, also scored 37 but off only 12 deliveries with four sixes to lay the platform. Aiden Markram then anchored a run chase with a 36-ball 50 as SRH knocked off the runs in just 18.1 overs.

His 60-run stand with opener Travis Head (31 off 24 balls) for the second wicket in seven overs after Abhishek pummeled a listless Mukesh Chaudhary, playing his first game, for 27 runs. The match as a contest ended then and there as CSK lost two away matches on trot while SRH have now won both their home games. CSK had a chance first up but Moeen Ali dropped Head off the second delivery bowled by Deepak Chahar.

After that it was mayhem as 23-year-old Abhishek hit two fours and three sixes off Mukesh, who was forced selection in absence of Mustafizur Rahaman, who has taken a one-match break to go home and submit his US visa application. Playing his first competitive game after 16 months, Mukesh was all over the place in his only over and will again warm the benches from next game when Mustafizue comes back.

There was no let up from the Abhishek as he also hammered ‘IPL specialist’ Chahar for a boundary and a six in the third over but his pyrotechnics ended there as his lofted shot was taken by a diving Jadeja.

Head and Markram consolidated the innings without taking too many risks, reaching 78 for 1 after six overs. SRH brought up their 100 runs in the ninth over with Markram hitting a massive six off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja in the ninth over.

Head, the Impact Sub for T Natarajan, was out in the 10th over off Maheesh Theekshana but not before he added 60 runs with Markram. Pressure had eased out by then as SRH needed just 59 runs from the final 10 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Markram made his first fifty of the season in the 14th over as CSK bowlers toiled to get the wickets. But the South African batter who captained SRH last season got out in the same over bowled by compatriot Moeen Ali (2/23) who won an LBW review taken by SRH.

The Hyderabad-based side did not need to press panic button as they needed just 34 runs from the last five overs. Moeen got his second wicket in the form of Shahbaz Ahmed (18) but Heinrich Klaasen (10 not out) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (14 not out) took SRH home.

Earlier, CSK batters failed to capitalise on their starts as they were restricted to a below-par 165 for 5.

In-form Shivam Dube top-scored with a 24-ball 45 while veteran Ajinkya Rahane contributed a sedate 35 off 30 balls after CSK were asked to bat on a pitch that didn’t seem like a proverbial belter. The duo’s 65-run partnership for the third wicket from just 6.3 overs was the only highlight of the CSK innings.

CSK added only 37 runs in the last five overs and that could be the turning point in the match.

But credit must be given to CSK’s all-season’s man Ravindra Jadeja, whose unbeaten 31 off 23 balls was the added fillip that the defending champions needed at the end.

Chennai Super Kings batters found the going tough against SunRisers Hyderabad as they could score only 165/5 in 20 overs against SunRisers Hyderabad.

There was a point in the innings in the 19th over as Jadeja got in the way of Bhuvneshwar Kumar‘s throw at the stumps. SRH’s Heinrich Klaasen also looked like signalling that he might be obstructing the field. But SRH skipper Pat Cummins  withdrew the appeal.

Mohammad Kaif, however, said: “Two questions to Pat Cummins on withdrawing the obstructing the field appeal against Jadeja. Was it a tactical call to let a struggling Jadeja be the crease and keep Dhoni indoors? Would he have done the same if it was Virat Kohli at World T20?”

But some social media users praised Cummins for his stand too.

Coming out at the fag end of the innings, former captain MS Dhoni remained not out on one from two balls.

For SRH, it was a collective bowling effort with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pat Cummins, T Natarajan Shahbaz Ahmed and Jaydev Unadkat taking a wicket apiece.

CSK made a decent start, reaching 25 for no loss in three overs before veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave SRH the breakthrough with his first wicket of the season in the form of Rachin Ravindra who slices it straight to Markram in the first ball of the fourth over.

One down Rahane then hit SRH captain Cummins for a six in the fifth over. CSK took 15 runs from the sixth over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Rahane and his captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hitting a four and a six respectively.

CSK were well-placed at 48 for 1 at the end of first powerplay but the introduction of spin in the form of Shahbaz Ahmed did the trick as Gaikwad was out for 26 off 21 balls, with Abdul Samad taking a simple catch at long-on.

Rahane did score useful runs but never really looked fluent in his strokeplay as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat and T Natarajan took pace off their deliveries to stem the flow of runs.

Dube was the primary scorer during their 65-run partnership for the third wicket from just 6.3 overs. Dube, who has already scored a fifty this season, was more aggressive then his senior partner, hitting two fours and four towering sixes during his 24-ball innings. He is indeed making a good case for himself as a finisher in Indian squd for T20 World Cup in the Americas.

He was finally deceived by a pace off delivery from Pat Cummins ball outside off and gave an easy catch to Kumar at backward point in the 14th over.

Rahane was out in the next over off the bowling of Unadkat and the two quick wickets did not help CSK’s cause.

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins said they are looking forward to an “aggressive” start in the upcoming season. While speaking in a video shared on the official social media handle of the Hyderabad-based franchise, Cummins said that 20-over formats are hard. He showered praise on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and said that they have a “good team”.

“So, a bit of planning to go and then just wanna get off to a really good start. T20s are hard. Kolkata’s a good team, but I think just wanna see a really aggressive, start to the season,” Cummins said.

Hyderabad will kick off their IPL 2024 voyage against the Kolkata-based franchise on Saturday at the iconic Eden Gardens.

He added that they have an “exciting” young talent in their squad. The 30-year-old added that he is “super excited” to play with young talents.

“I think we’ve got a great mix. We’ve got a couple more experienced guys like Bhuvi. Obviously Aiden Markram captain last year. But we’ve got some exciting young talent. I’m super excited to see guys like Abhishek, Umran Malik, these kind of guys I’ve only seen a little bit of but super excited, so I think fans should be pretty pumped for the season ahead,” he added.

Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, SRH parted ways with West Indies legendary batter Brain Lara and brought in former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori as the team’s head coach for the forthcoming season. Recently, they replaced Aiden Markram and handed over the captaincy to Pat Cummins for the upcoming season.

The SRH franchise has won only one title in IPL so far and that was in 2016 under the leadership of star Australia opener David Warner. After that, they reached the finals of the 2018 edition under the leadership of star New Zealand batter Kane Williamson where they went down to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The Hyderabad side released players like Harry Brook, Kartik Tyagi, Adil Rashid, Akeal Hossein, and Samarth Vyas before the IPL 2024 auction and traded Mayank Dagar to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and took Shahbaz Ahmed from them. In the IPL 2024 auction, SRH bought Cummins for Rs. 20.50 Cr., and Travis Head for Rs. 6.8 Cr., Jaydev Unadkat for Rs. 1.6 Cr., Wanindu Hasaranga for Rs. 1.5 Cr., Akash Singh and Jhathavedh Subramanyan for Rs. 20 Lakhs.

Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and a fully-fit Mohsin Khan’s superb bowling effort was complemented by Nitish Rana’s power-packed half-century as Uttar Pradesh comfortably beat Gujarat by six wickets to enter the quarter-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament in Mohali on Tuesday. Batting first, UP bowlers were bang on target as Gujarat managed a below-par 127 for 8 in 20 overs. UP crossed the target with eight balls to spare and never looked under pressure with Rana smashing unbeaten 71 off 49 balls.

Bhuvneshwar, who has now been out of national reckoning for more than a year, gave nice exhibition of seam and swing bowling to pick up 3 for 21 in four overs while the lanky left-arm fast bowler Mohsin pegged the Gujarat batters back with pace and bounce to end with figures of 2/13.

Kartik Tyagi, one of the fastest pacers in the Indian domestic circuit, also regularly breached the 140 clicks to take 1 for 27. Saurav Chauhan (32 off 21 balls) was the only notable scorer for the losing team.

In reply, UP quickly lost a couple of wickets to be reduced to 22 for 2 at start of the fourth over but Rana along with Sameer Rizvi (30 off 39 balls) added 81 runs in 12.1 overs to put the team on the cusp of victory.

Rana’s innings had seven fours and two sixes — one each off pacer Chintan Gaja and off-spinner Arya Desai.

It was Dhruv Jurel (13 not out), who ended the proceedings, hitting a four and a six off left-arm pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla, best known for being one of Indian Test team’s regular net bowlers.

Brief Scores: Gujarat: 127/8 in 20 overs (Saurav Chauhan 32 off 21 balls, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/21, Mohsin Khan 2/13).

UP: 130/4 in 18.4 overs (Nitish Rana 71 not out off 49 balls, Sameer Rizvi 30 off 39 balls, Ravi Bishnoi 2/29).
