New Delhi:

People from Punjab comprise the biggest chunk of the Indians being deported by the US, government sources said today – days after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s objection to the flights landing in his state. The government has clarified the situation about the handcuffs, with foreign minister S Jaishankar saying there are provisions for it in rules for deportation.

Donald Trump’s campaign promises included a crackdown on illegal immigrants, and since his inauguration, three military aircraft have arrived in India carrying deportees.

After the first flight landed on February 5, Bhagwant Mann accused the Centre of trying to defame Punjab and said a holy city like Amritsar should not be made a “deport centre”. This flight had 30 deportees from Punjab and 33 each from Haryana and Gujarat.

Sources said since May 2020, 21 flights have been landed in Amritsar.
Three flights arrived on February 5, February 15 and February 16 in which 333 Indians were sent. Of them, 262 were men, 42 women, 18 boys and 11 girls.

Among them, the maximum people – 126 or 37.8 per cent – were from Punjab. The next was Haryana, whose 110 residents comprised 33 per cent of the passengers. Seventy-four passengers, 22 per cent, were from Gujarat. The rest were from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Goa and 1 each from Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

The rules for deporting illegal immigrants have been mentioned in the handbook issued by USICE in 2015, sources said.

It is clearly written there that under the policy of November 2012, people being sent by ICE planes will be sent in handcuffs. The US has followed the same policy while sending Indians.

Following opposition parties’ protest about the handcuffing of the deportees, foreign minister S Jaishankar told parliament on February 6 that the government was engaging with the US to ensure that deported Indians are not mistreated.

New Delhi:

A team of Delhi Police and Election Commission officials entered Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s city residence Thursday evening to investigate “a complaint of money distribution”.

This comes less than a week before the Delhi Assembly election.

Sources said the cops and poll officers – held outside Kapurthala House, near Connaught Place in central Delhi for nearly 90 minutes before being allowed inside – were video-recording their search.

Earlier, visuals from outside the building showed uniformed security personnel, with assault rifles, outside the main gate. Shortly afterwards the Returning Officer for the New Delhi constituency, OP Pandey, said a complaint had been received – on its cVIGIL mobile app – about money distribution.

“We have to dispose of the complaint within 100 minutes. Our team had come (but) was not allowed to enter. I have come to request them to let us enter… with a cameraperson,” he said.

Furious AAP Responds

Responding on X, Mr Mann accused the Delhi Police and Election Commission of “defaming Punjabis at the behest of the BJP”. “Today, an Election Commission team with Delhi Police came to raid my house… Kapurthala House in Delhi. BJP people are openly distributing money in Delhi, but Delhi Police and Election Commission are not seeing anything. No action is being taken on all this.”

AAP boss Arvind Kejriwal has also reacted, telling reporters, “I don’t understand this… it is BJP leaders who are distributing cash and other items, but the raid is being conducted on Punjab Chief Minister…”

Chief Minister Atishi also, in response to the search over alleged ‘cash-for-votes’, alleged numerous similar violations by the BJP had been ignored by the Election Commission.

She referred to a letter, sent to the poll body this morning, claiming distribution of money and liquor, in large quantities, in her constituency, i.e., Kalkaji. She also claimed a resident had been “threatened with dire consequences (by) people carrying guns… and seen roaming with a Delhi Police constable”.

“BJP people distribute money, shoes… in broad daylight. That is not visible. Instead, they raid the residence of an elected Chief Minister,” she raged online after cops turned up at Mr Mann’s home.”

“Wow BJP! Delhi will give its answer on the 5th.”

‘Punjab Government’ Car?

The exact nature of the complaint is not known at this time, but there are reports that indicate it stems from last night’s seizure of a car parked outside Punjab Bhavan on Copernicus Marg.

Sources told NDTV around Rs 8 lakh in cash, liquor, and AAP pamphlets were found in the car, which also had a ‘Government of Punjab’ sticker on it. The Punjab government said the car is not theirs.

It was pointed out the number plate of the seized vehicle matched a Ford Eco Sport used by the state, but the vehicle in police custody now is a Hyundai Creta. Delhi Police have registered a case.

Delhi Election 2025

The national capital’s 70 Assembly seats vote in a single phase on February 5.

The results will be declared three days later. The AAP is bidding for a hat-trick of wins after dominant shows in the 2015 and 2020 polls, when they swept 67 and 62 seats, respectively.

This time, though, a much closer contest is expected, with the ruling party and the opposition BJP squabbling over a number of issues, including allegations by the former that the latter’s government in neighbouring Haryana had “poisoned” Yamuna River water it sends to Delhi.

New Delhi:

As the contest for Delhi Assembly polls hots up, BP candidate from the New Delhi constituency Parvesh Verma accused Aam Aadmi Party chief and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal of misusing official machinery from Punjab, apart from “Chinese CCTV cameras”, in the capital.

“Thousands of vehicles with Punjab registration plates are roaming around in New Delhi. Items like water dispensers, chairs and other materials are being transported to Delhi in trucks belonging to the Punjab government,” the BJP leader claimed. He also urged the Election Commission to curb the misuse of resources owned by the Punjab government in Delhi.

Verma claimed Kejriwal fears “imminent defeat” from New Delhi and is getting Chinese CCTV cameras installed in the constituency’s slums just for the show with the help of the Punjab government. He further claimed that the Chinese CCTV cameras, installed in a “hurried manner”, pose a security threat.

He further said Punjab government’s teachers and employees are “masquerading as AAP workers” in Delhi, as the election campaigns continue in full swing. Verma also claimed that two teachers hailing from Amritsar were arrested by the police.

In response, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said Verma has “insulted” Punjabis and demanded an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Mann said in a post on X that Delhi is the country’s capital and vehicles registered in various states ply in the city. He added that vehicles registered in any state can ply anywhere in the country and there is no restriction on it.

Mann added that Verma’s statement is “dangerous, worrisome and insulting for Punjabis”, adding that his statement colludes to the assumption that Punjabis are a “threat” to the country’s security and sought an apology from Union home minister Amit Shah over it.

“Amit Shahji, you are neither able to keep the country’s border safe nor Delhi. Thousands of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas are coming to the country, don’t you have a problem with them? But you are calling Punjabis coming from Punjab to Delhi a threat to the country. You should apologise to Punjabis,” Mann said.

Kejriwal, meanwhile, said the BJP should apologise to the Punjabi community. “Lakhs of Punjabi refugees live in Delhi, who left everything behind during the difficult times of partition and settled in Delhi. By what BJP leaders are saying today, they are insulting their martyrdom and sacrifice,” he said in a social media post in Hindi.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled to go to polls on February 5 and the results are set to be declared on February 8.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday (November 5, 2024) condemned the attack on a Hindu temple in Canada, saying it is unacceptable and such incidents are a direct assault on the values of peace, respect and unity.

Mr. Sawant also urged the Canadian government to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all religious communities within its borders.

The incident occurred on Sunday (November 3, 2024) in Canada’s Brampton city, where protestors carrying Khalistani flags clashed with people at the Hindu Sabha temple and disrupted a consular event co-organised by the temple authorities and the Indian Consulate.

The development comes as India-Canada ties remain deeply troubled over the North American country’s alleged support to Khalistani separatists and its accusation of India’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who has been designated a terrorist by India.

Strongly condemn attack on Hindu temple in Canada: PM Modi

In the post on X, CM Sawant said, “The recent, targeted attack on the Hindu temple and its devotees is not only deeply concerning but also entirely unacceptable. Such incidents represent a direct assault on the values of peace, respect and unity that form the foundation of any civilised society. We call upon the Canadian government to take immediate, decisive action to ensure the safety and security of all religious communities within its borders,” he added.

Many Punjabis consider Canada as their second home: Bhagwant Mann

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann condemned the attack on the Hindu temple and urged the Centre to take up the issue with the Canadian government to prevent such incidents in the future.

“I strongly condemn the incident. I also demand from the Government of India to speak to the Canadian government over this issue in order to prevent such incidents in future,” Mr. Mann told reporters in Bathinda.

He said many Punjabis consider Canada as their second home and nobody wants such a violent incident to take place there.

The farmers have also been protesting against police actions against farmers for stubble burning.

Chandigarh (Punjab):

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu on Saturday blamed the Punjab government led by the Aam Aadmi Party for the farmers’ protests in the state and demanded the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Speaking to ANI, the BJP leader called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP leader Raghav Chadha the enemies of the people of Punjab.

“This problem has been intentionally created by the AAP government (of Punjab). This problem is neither from the side of farmers nor from the central government… Rs 44,000 crore has already been released by the central government (for Punjab) two months back to procure crops on the MSP (minimum support price). People who are enemies of Punjab – like Arvind Kejriwal and Raghav Chadha – have a hold there and they are not passing orders to Inspectors to procure crops,” Bittu told ANI in Chandigarh.

“Tomorrow, we will meet the governor. If the Chief Minister (Bhagwant Mann) resigns, this issue can be solved in two days,” he added.

Earlier today, farmers in Punjab said that their protests against the government to press for multiple demands, including timely paddy procurement, will continue and a road blockade will be organised in Sangrur, Bhatinda, Moga, Batala, and Gurdaspur in the State.

The farmers have also been protesting against police actions against farmers for stubble burning.

Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (PKMSC) District President Aranjeet Singh said they will gather in Phagwada over the issues concerning farmers of the state.

“Both the Punjab government and the central government should find a solution and resolve the issue timely so that the people do not face any problems because of the road blockade (chakka jam). We don’t want common people to face any problems. However, if the government is unable to decide anything, we will be forced to block the roads,” Mr Singh said.

Meanwhile, farmers from Punjab’s Jalandhar joined other protestors and were seen moving towards the Phagwara protest site to block the highway this morning.

On the action taken against farmers over stubble burning, a senior farm leader said that the pollution emitted by factories and vehicles on roads is not even mentioned, but the stubble burning issue is often highlighted.

“They have taken action (against farmers) in the name of stubble burning. The pollution is not only because of stubble burning. It also happens due to many vehicles on roads, due to factories. Stubble burning only contributes two to three per cent to pollution levels. The pollution emitted by factories and other things is not even mentioned. Stubble burning is just an excuse to defame the farmers, which is unfair. The Punjab government and the central government are alike. They just want to destroy farmers. This is why the protests will go on indefinitely. We will go to Phagwada from Amritsar and block the roads,” the farm leader said.

The roadblocks will be organised at four places including Sangrur, Moga, Phagwara, and Batla.

Surjeet Singh Phul, president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) Punjabi said that the blockade will continue indefinitely if the demands are not met.

Uncertain over securing a suitable job, Ranjandeep Singh, a 22-year-old bachelor of arts graduate in Punjab’s Malout town in Muktsar district has been for the past six months rigorously preparing to clear his language testing exams as he aspires and foresees ‘a better life’ abroad. His concern — similar to many youngsters in Punjab — is the want of suitable employment opportunities, and in the prevailing scenario migrating abroad is Mr. Singh’s topmost preference.

“I am preparing for IELTS (English language proficiency test) exam and shall appear next month. Once I clear it, I intend to go to Canada to study and find a job. I have lost hope of finding a suitable job here. By suitable, I mean a job in which I can live a dignified life. I completed my BA last year (2023). Later, I got a job as a security guard at a local private company in Malout. I was getting a meagre salary for the work, making it difficult for me to assist my family. Also, the long working hours took a toll on my health, after working for two months I left the job. I also worked in the sales wing of a local pesticide company, but with the scanty wages, making ends meet was tough. Finally, I decided to go abroad. I am preparing to go to Canada,” said Mr. Singh, who belongs to a family that owns a 4-5 acre farm land at village Karamgarh.

‘Protest march’

Close to 150 kilometres away from Malout, on July 28, in Sangrur — the hometown of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann —  under the banner of ‘Punjab Berozgar Sanjha Morcha’ (Punjab Unemployed Joint Front), five outfits of youths, who have been for long seeking government jobs, were up in arms against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the State for its alleged apathy towards their demands. They staged a ‘protest march’ near the Chief Minister’s local residence in Sangrur, even as the protesters were stopped by the Police as they attempted to cross the barricades. Shouting anti-government slogans, the protesters blamed the AAP government for not paying any heed to the plight of “unemployed youth”.

41-year-old Raman Kumar, B.Ed (Bachelor of Education), who cleared his Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test in 2018 is annoyed as his wait for a “secure government job” is still a distant dream.

Sukhwinder Singh Dhilwan, who has been leading the struggle of these youngsters asserts that even though there are several posts vacant in departments such as health and education, the State government was not recruiting. “We are asking the government to fill up vacant posts of the master cadre of teachers in all subjects and grant age relaxation. Also, the vacant posts of multi-purpose health workers should be advertised and filled. The examination for art and craft teacher recruitment should be conducted among other demands,” he said.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (January-March 2024) the unemployment rate in Punjab for the age group of 15 years and above (urban areas) stands at 6.8% among men and 10.9% among women. Punjab’s total unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is above the national unemployment rate of 6.7%.

Also read:On unemployment in Indian States

The matter of concern among a few economists, however, is the unemployment rate among the youth. As per the survey, the unemployment rate in Punjab in the age group of 15 and 29 years in urban areas is 17.4%, which includes 15% among men and 26% among women.

Pointing out that the quality of employment is quite bad in Punjab, noted economist Dr. Lakhwinder Singh, a visiting professor at the Institute for Human Development, New Delhi, says “80% of youth employed in Punjab is highly dissatisfied withtheir jobs. This is highest across Indian States. The generation of new but decent jobs will prevent them from going to greener pastures.”

“Given the structure and slow growth of the Punjab economy, the employment elasticity is low. Thus high unemployment is the natural outcome. To reduce unemployment, the Punjab government should invest to raise capital formation that will make the Punjab economy dynamic and generate higher GSDP growth and employment. Punjab is suffering from investment famine. Consequently, the digital revolution and the forth industrial revolution in technologies are bypassing Punjab. The State government should rise from this slumber and make investments in these areas that will attract young educated professionals to seek employment in these sectors. Private corporate investment can also be induced to invest in new activities where most of the youth aspire to work,” says Dr. Lakhwinder.

Rise in migration

The latest study by Ludhiana-based Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has revealed that Punjab is witnessing a steady rise in migration. Punjab has witnessed a rise in emigration with approximately 13.34% of rural households having at least one member who has emigrated.

“Low income (72.81%), less employment opportunities (72.97%), and corruption (72.97%) were the main factors reported behind overseas migration as stated by migrants’ family,” points out the study. Meanwhile, the State government claims to have been working to improve the employment rate.

The Punjab chief minister was addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Haryana.

Chandigarh:

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday attacked the Centre, asking if the BJP-led government will not allow the protesting farmers camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border to enter Delhi, should he “send them to Lahore”.

Farmers from Punjab, led by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), began the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march on February 13 to press the government to accept their demands which include that the Centre should give a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

They were stopped by the Haryana Police, which had set up barricades, including cemented blocks, on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway. The farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since then.

“At Khanauri and Shambhu, the border has been fortified with iron nails and barricading so that farmers cannot enter Delhi. The government runs from Delhi so they will go there. If they will not go to Delhi, should I send them to Lahore?” Mr Mann said, while addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Haryana.

The chief minister addressed two rallies — one in Hisar’s Barwala and the other in Sirsa’s Dabwali. Haryana goes to polls later this year and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has said it will contest on all the 90 seats.

At the Barwala event, the chief minister said even four years ago, the farmers were stopped from entering Delhi.

“As many as 726 farmers died during the farmers’ protest against the now repealed farm laws when they were stopped earlier,” he added.

Mr Mann alleged that people of Haryana gave chance to different parties but they all looted the state.

“If a doctor is not able to cure an ailment then the doctor should be changed,” the AAP leader said, adding that like Delhi and Punjab voters, people of Haryana should also “vote for ‘badlav’ (change) this time”.

Mr Mann touched upon several initiatives of the AAP governments in Punjab and Delhi.

In Punjab, 43,000 government jobs have been given purely on merit basis, the chief minister claimed.

“There have been paper leak incidents in Haryana but in Punjab, you will not hear such things,” Mr Mann added.

He said Punjab and Haryana are brothers.

“We may have become separate states but our hearts are one,” Mr Mann said.

“We are giving 600 units of free electricity to everyone per billing cycle of two months in Punjab,” he said.

Mr Mann said the AAP government in Delhi has reformed the government schools.

“Children of poor families are cracking top competitive exams in Delhi now,” he said.

“We have taken the government to people’s doorsteps to facilitate them and make their lives better,” Mr Mann said.

He urged the people of Haryana not to be carried away by the promises being made by the BJP and the Congress.

“Earlier, they (BJP and Congress) used to rule by turns and people had no other option, but now they have an alternative in the AAP,” Mr Mann said.

“The BJP has been in power for 10 years. Did they give you any job or did they undertake development?” he asked, while addressing the gathering.

“I am told if it rains for one minute in Barwala, people have to take out boats. Such is the situation,” Mann said.

Attacking the BJP government at the Centre, he said during the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP talked of “400 paar” but now they are running their government with the support of allies.

“Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal belongs to Haryana and he changed the direction of the country’s politics. He had said the BJP will change the Constitution if they get overwhelming majority. Thankfully, they did not get majority, otherwise they would have changed the Constitution,” Mr Mann said.

Meanwhile, at Dabwali, Mr Mann told the gathering that with nearly three months to go for the Haryana polls, the BJP will give “lollipops”.

“They gave this lollipop during the Lok Sabha elections also, when they claimed to have reduced cooking gas cylinder price after hiking it manifold. Be wary of their lollipops,” Mr Mann said.

Further taking a dig at the BJP, he said, “They keeping about double-engine (government). Then they changed one engine midway replacing (Manohar Lal) Khattar. Was the engine defective or what happened? Now, they brought another engine.” He told the people of Haryana that the country does not need double engine but it needs a new engine.

“Only one engine is sufficient. Otherwise you may have five engines but what will they do if they are not good?” said Mr Mann.

He also talked about several initiatives of his government in Punjab taken for the welfare of various sections.

Mr Mann said Punjab contributes 47 per cent to the food bowl.

Jalandhar:

After being denied special status by the Centre, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government has decided that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will not attend the NITI Aayog meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 27.

Mr Mann addressed a press conference on Wednesday where he listed the reasons behind boycotting the NITI Aayog meeting and said that Punjab has been denied special status and that’s why they are boycotting the meeting.

“Punjab should be given special status but it has been denied its rights. Our Rural Development Fund is being stopped. Tableau of Punjab is not being displayed on Republic Day. Our share of GST is not being given to us. In whole of the budget, there is no mention of Punjab. So why would we go there,” said Bhagwant Mann.

“We contribute 47 per cent to the food bowl and the ration provided to 80 crore people of India comes from Punjab. 30 per cent police are deployed towards national borders and working for national security still no budget is allocated. Prime Minister put the future of youth at stake just save his own future,” said Bhagwant Mann.

Notably, Mr Mann arrived in Jalandhar on Wednesday to meet people of Majha and Doaba regions for two days and address their issues as part of ‘Doabe Ch Sarkar Tuhaade Dwaar’ scheme.

Along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are also expected to give the meeting a miss. However, as per reports, Mamata Banerjee and TMC’s Derek O’Brien will attend the meeting and “strongly use the platform to hold the Union government responsible” for Bengal’s legitimate dues.

Addressing the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said that his government would boycott the NITI Aayog meeting scheduled for July 27 in protest against the central government’s alleged injustice to the state in the allocation of funds in the Union Budget.

“As a mark of protest against the Central Government, we, the Telangana Government, are boycotting the NITI Aayog meeting to be held on July 27th. The Centre has violated the rights of Telangana. There is injustice to the state in the allocation of funds,” Mr Reddy said in the Assembly.

The Telangana chief minister also lashed out at the previous BRS government in the state and asked if former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao would address a Deeksha protest along with him for the benefit of the Telangana state at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

This came in as a response to a challenge made by BRS leaders KT Rama Rao and Harish Rao during a heated discussion in the Assembly about discrimination against Telangana in the Union Budget.

In Punjab, polling for 13 parliamentary constituencies will take place in a single phase on June 1.

A video depicting a large crowd chasing and attacking a man in a yellow turban is circulating widely on social media. The claim accompanying the video suggests that the man being assaulted is Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) with a Hindi caption that translates to “Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was thrashed in Punjab.”

However, the video in question is not related to Punjab or Mr Mann.

Fact Check

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led fact checker Logicall Facts to a longer version posted on Facebook by JK Rozana News on April 13, 2024. The Hindi description translates to “Breaking Jammu-Uproar in Yuva Jat Sabha rally, Amandeep Singh Boparai attacked.” Amandeep Singh Boparai is a social activist and president of the Yuva Jatt Sabha, an organization dedicated to the welfare and upliftment of the Jatt community in Jammu and Kashmir.

Following this lead, they searched for news reports about an attack on Boparai. They found another video shared on Facebook by a local news network in Jammu and Kashmir, JK Channel, on April 13, 2024. This eight-minute video, shot from a different angle, shows scenes similar to those in the viral clip. At 7:50 minutes into the video, we can see identical features – the white car, the blue bus, and the river passage alongside the road – as seen in the viral clip. The video description reads, “Amandeep Boparai was detained by the police, what happened in Gol Gujral.”

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

We also discovered that Boparai addressed the attack on him during a live video on Facebook, alleging that the attack was pre-planned to create discord between Hindus and Sikhs during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. On May 17, Boparai shared a post on Facebook stating that the video of an attack on him in Jammu was being falsely associated with Mann. We have contacted him for clarification and will update this article with his response when we receive it.

The man in the yellow turban seen in the viral clip can also be seen in the video shared by JK Channel and on Boparai’s Facebook Live.

In an interview with Hindi news network Punjab Kesari, Boparai stated that a mob attacked a rally organized by the Yuva Jatt Sabha in Gol Gujral, Jammu. He revealed that he had been receiving threatening messages from Pakistani mobile numbers for several months, which had raised concerns about such an attack. Boparai reported that approximately 20 individuals assaulted him and his workers.

In Punjab, polling for 13 parliamentary constituencies will take place in a single phase during the seventh and final phase of voting, scheduled for June 1, 2024.

The verdict

The viral video depicts a mob assaulting Amandeep Singh Boparai, President of the Yuva Jatt Sabha, in Gol Gujral, Jammu, during a rally in April 2024. It has no connection to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal — out of Tihar Jail on interim bail — told people during a roadshow today that he would not have to go back to jail if they vote for him.  “I have to go back to jail after 20 days. If you choose jhadu (AAP’s symbol), I won’t have to go back to jail,” the Chief Minister said.

Accompanied by his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, Mr Kejriwal held a roadshow in Moti Nagar in support of Somnath Bharti, the party’s candidate for the New Delhi seat.

“They sent me to jail because I worked for you. The BJP does not want that work of Delhi people are done,” he said.

“If I went back to jail, the BJP would stop your work, free electricity, degrade schools and shut down hospitals and Mohalla Clinics,” he said.

Delhi votes for its seven Lok Sabha seats on May 25.

The AAP chief — arrested in the Delhi liquor policy case — is out on interim bail till June 1. He has to surrender on June 2.
