England went on a rampage against West Indies in the second Test at Trent Bridge on Thursday. In a superb display of power-hitting Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope went on a rampage as England reached the score of 50 in just 4.2 overs. This is the first time in the 147 years history of Test criket that a team reached 50-run mark in less that 27 balls. In doing so, England broke their own record of reaching 50 in 4.3 overs against South Africa in 1994 at The Oval.

Fastest team 50s in Test cricket: (where known)

4.2 overs – England vs WI, Nottingham, 2024

4.3 overs – England vs SA, The Oval, 1994

4.6 overs – England vs SL, Manchester, 2002

5.2 overs – Sri Lanka vs PAK, Karachi, 2004

5.3 overs – India vs ENG, Chennai, 2008

5.3 overs – India vs WI, Port of Spain, 2023

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to field in the second Test against England at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

With sunny blue skies overhead, conditions appeared ideal for batting on a lightly-grassed pitch.

But Brathwaite’s decision was understandable given his side had been bowled out for just 121 and 136 during an innings and 114-run defeat by England in the first Test at Lord’s last week.

“It looks a good cricket pitch, but I think we’ll utilise what we get today,” Brathwaite said, with the West Indies looking to level the three-match series at 1-1.

“With the ball, we could be a lot of more disciplined. That’s one thing we’ve talked about.

“Batting wise, we’ve got to build partnerships and score at least 300 runs in the first innings.”

England captain Ben Stokes added: “It was a tough one if we’d have won the toss. I’ll keep to myself what we were going to do.”

Both sides had already named their teams before the toss, with England recalling fast bowler Mark Wood after veteran seamer James Anderson retired from international duty with 704 Test wickets — a record for any pace bowler in the format — following the Lord’s Test.

But the West Indies, who had planned to be unchanged, were forced to make a late alteration when spinner Gudakesh Motie woke up with ‘flu on the morning of the game and dropped out.

It was a blow to the tourists, with Motie the only one of their batsmen to pass 30 at Lord’s, where he was also the West Indies’ most impressive bowler.

His place was taken by spin-bowling all-rounder Kevin Sinclair, who came in for his second career Test.

Sinclair made a fifty on his Test debut when the West Indies produced a stunning upset to beat Australia by eight runs in Brisbane in January.

Teams:

England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith (wkt), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir

West Indies: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Mikyle Louis, Kirk McKenzie, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva (wkt), Kevin Sinclair, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales

Shubman Gill’s running catch to dismiss Ben Duckett© X (Twitter)

Kuldeep Yadav turned out to be India’s rescuer as the hosts waited for their first breakthrough on Day 1 of the 5th Test against England. Kuldeep got rid of opening batter Ben Duckett, who looked to go big but could only connect the ball with the thick outside edge of his bat. It was Shubman Gill who produced a fine catch running backward to help India get their first breakthrough. The brilliant catch by Gill reminded commentator Sunil Gavaskar of Rohit Sharma‘s dismissal in the ODI World Cup 2023 final.

Gill looked in complete control as he took the catch that sent Duckett back to the pavillion. The catch was very similar to the one Australia star Travis Head. Here’s the video:

“It’s never easy to catch these. Running backwards… This is reminiscent of the Rohit Sharma dismissal in the World Cup final. He was caught in the same way by Travis Head. Look at the embrace from the teammates. They know how difficult it was. His long levers made him reach out. Terrific stuff, what a cricketer,” Gavaskar said on air.

After Duckett’s dismissal, the duo of Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley looked to build something big, the former was dismissed by Kuldeep, with Dhruv Jurel pulling off a fine stumping effort. England was 100/2 in 25.3 overs, ending the first session.

Kuldeep (2/22) was the pick of the bowlers for India in the first session.

Earlier, England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first during the fifth and final Test against India at Dharamsala’s Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium.

India have already won the series 3-1. England, having lost their first series under skipper Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum‘s leadership, are playing for their pride. Despite the series being decided, there are valuable 12 ICC World Test Championship points up for grabs. This is also the 100th Test match for Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin and England batter Jonny Bairstow.

The Indian cricket team continued their dominance on Day 2 of the 5th Test against England in Dharamsala, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill slamming a century each. The duo, in fact, brought up their tons in a non-traditional way, as far as Test cricket is concerned. The rate with which Rohit and Gill scored runs in the middle prompted former England star Owais Shah to ask ex-India cricketer Saba Karim in the commentary box, what was the reason behind Team India’s scoring rate.

Saba, in no mood to go easy on Shah, reminded the Englishman of the comment that was made by India captain Rohit Sharma in the pre-match press conference. When Rohit was asked about Ben Duckett‘s comment, suggesting England should get credit for Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s high strike rate, the India skipper had sent a ‘Rishabh Pant reminder’.

“There was a guy called Rishabh Pant in our team, probably Ben Duckett hasn’t seen him play,” Rohit had said in the press conference.

“Wahi jawab dun jo Rohit Sharma ne kahan tha ke aaplogon ne Rishabh Pant ko batting karte hue dekha nahi hai (should I respond the same way Rohit did, saying you guys have not seen Rishabh Pant bat)?”, Saba told Shah in the commentary box on Day 2.

There was plenty of talk around England’s ‘Bazball’ before the start of the series but Ben Stokes‘ men haven’t quite managed to display their positively attacking style of play in India. In the press conference on Wednesday, Rohit had even said that he doesn’t quite understand what ‘Bazball’ is all about.

“I honestly don’t know what [Bazball] means, whether it is to go and strike, whether it is to go and defend and wait for the loose ball,” Rohit said in the press conference.

“I have not seen any wild swinging from anyone, so I don’t know exactly what this term means.

“But, yeah, clearly they have played better cricket from what they played the last time they were here. And you got to give credit to two of their batters who got big hundreds there, and played well. They applied their method to get some success and they got it. But other than that I don’t know what it means,” Rohit had said.

India captain Rohit Sharma was in no mood to duck bouncers as he attended the press conference on the eve of the 5th Test against England in Dharamsala. Rohit, on being asked about the comment from England batter Ben Duckett about the visiting team taking credit for Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s attacking heroics, sent a firm ‘Rishabh Pant reminder’ to everyone. Hitting sixers in the media conference on Wednesday, Rohit had no hesitation in suggesting to the England team, especially Ben Duckett, that they have probably not seen Rishabh Pant bat, hence such a comment was made.

“There was a guy called Rishabh Pant in our team, probably Ben Duckett hasn’t seen him play,” Rohit said when asked about the comment made by the England batter.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has emerged as India’s top-scoring batter in the series, scoring 655 runs in 4 matches so far at an average of 94.57 and a strike-rate of 78.63. Seeing the young India batter deal in boundaries during the Rajkot Test, Duckett had suggested that the England team’s ‘Bazball’ style of play should give credit for encouraging Jaiswal to play the way he has in the series so far.

“When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they’re playing differently than how other people play Test cricket,” Duckett had said.

It isn’t just Rohit who found Duckett’s comment deplorable. Earlier, even former England captain Nasser Hussain had blasted the player for his remarks.

“He’s not learned from you. He’s learned from his upbringing, all the hard yards he had to put in growing up. If anything, lads, look at him and learn from him. I hope there’s a little bit of self-introspection going on. Otherwise, it becomes a cult – and, at times, Bazball and this regime has been described as such, where you cannot criticise within or externally,” Hussain had said on Sky Sports.
