Bayern Munich have signed French forward Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, the German giants announced on Sunday. German magazine Kicker reported Bayern paid a release clause of 70 million euros ($75 million) to the Premier League club to secure Olise’s services on a five-year deal. Olise, 22, completed a medical in the Bavarian capital on Sunday. “It’s a great challenge, and that’s exactly what I was looking for,” Olise said. “I want to prove myself at this level and play my part in ensuring that we win as many titles as possible with our team in the coming years.”

Born in London, Olise has represented France’s youth teams and will play for Les Bleus under coach Thierry Henry at the Paris Olympics in August.

Olise scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 19 Premier League games last season for the London club.

He is Bayern’s second major arrival of the summer after Japan defender Hiroki Ito who arrived from Stuttgart.

Bayern finished third behind champions Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart last season, breaking a streak of 11 straight Bundesliga titles.

Other than England captain Harry Kane, who scored 36 goals in 32 Bundesliga games, Bayern struggled for goals last season, with only Jamal Musiala (10 goals) reaching double figures.

“We want new impetus in our team, new energy, new ideas -– that’s what players like Michael Olise stand for,” Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said in a statement.

“We’re very much looking forward to having him here. He will enrich our game.”

Bayern are also reportedly close to finalising a deal for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, while Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah and RB Leipzig forward Xavi Simons are also on their shopping list.

Bayern Munich’s long search to fill their vacant head coaching position is over with the German giants naming Vincent Kompany as manager in a shock move on Wednesday. The 38-year-old Belgian, a surprise choice with his Burnley side relegated from the Premier League this season, has penned a three-year deal at the Allianz Arena. Normally in contention for the biggest names in the business, Bayern have been searching for months but have been knocked back by several candidates after their first trophyless season for 12 years.

After failed attempts to lure Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann and Austria’s Ralf Rangnick, Bayern tried to hold onto Thomas Tuchel, who had agreed in February to leave in the summer.

Tuchel however announced in May he “couldn’t agree on terms” to stay with the club and would “stick to the agreement we had in February”.

Instead, Bayern have decided for Kompany, taking a risk on an inexperienced yet promising candidate in one of the biggest jobs in football.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football,” said Kompany in a club statement.

“I’m now looking forward to the basics: working with the players, building a team. Once the basis is right, success will follow.”

Burnley will reportedly receive £10 million ($13 million) in compensation for allowing their manager to leave.

“We understand the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respect Vincent’s ambition to explore new opportunities,” Burnley said in a statement.

Alonso 2.0?

After a successful playing career where he captained Manchester City and the Belgian national team, Kompany returned to his first club Anderlecht to begin his managerial career.

He moved to Burnley in 2022 and took them to the Premier League as second-division champions, before crashing back to earth over the past 12 months.

Yet, he crucially retained the support of his old coach at City Pep Guardiola, who advised his former club to go for Kompany due to his leadership qualities and determination to play an attacking brand of football.

“As a coach, you have to stand for what you are as a character,” added Kompany. “I love having the ball, being creative – but we also have to be aggressive and courageous on the pitch.”

Coaching instability has been a feature at Bayern over the past decade and a half, despite their consistent on-field success.

Guardiola, whose three-year spell in Bavaria ended in 2016, was the last Bayern coach to complete at least two full seasons.

Used to poaching the best talent from their Bundesliga rivals, Bayern were shunned by Alonso, as he decided to take Leverkusen into the Champions League next season.

However, recreating the Spaniard’s success in Germany looks to have been on the minds of the Bayern board.

Like Alonso, Kompany is a disciple of Guardiola and speaks German thanks to his spell at Hamburg as a player.

But his transition into coaching has not been as smooth as the Leverkusen boss.

He finished third and fourth in his two full seasons at Anderlecht before overseeing Burnley’s lowest ever points tally in the English top-flight to finish second bottom of the Premier League this season.

Kompany, who is the same age as Bayern captain Manuel Neuer, now has a mammoth task ahead of him in reviving Bayern’s on-field fortunes, not to mention navigating the club’s complex backroom politics, which have derailed more experienced coaches.

Champions Bayer Leverkusen chase “immortality” in the shape of an undefeated Bundesliga season on Saturday as relegation-threatened Union Berlin face a last-day battle for survival. Xabi Alonso‘s Leverkusen can become the first team in Bundesliga history to go through a campaign unbeaten by avoiding defeat against Augsburg. Not even the greatest Bayern Munich sides have managed an invincible season. That Alonso’s men have done it without losing in any competition — a European record 50-game streak which includes runs to next week’s German Cup and Europa League finals — shows how incredible they have been.

A win against Augsburg would net Leverkusen 90 points from 34 games — the equal second-highest tally in German football history.

Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick said the match was “like a final”, while captain Lukas Hradecky said his team had “immortality” in sight.

Regardless of the result, Leverkusen will hoist the Bundesliga shield on Saturday and Hradecky said he would “be careful” not to hold it upside down, like Stuttgart captain Fernando Meira did in 2007.

In the German capital, Union — who faced Real Madrid in the Champions League in December  — need to beat Freiburg and hope for other results to go their way in order to avoid relegation.

Union won at home on the final day last season to finish fourth and qualify for Champions League football, continuing the team’s rise after their debut promotion in 2019.

Remarkably, Union sat atop the Bundesliga standings after two games this season, but then fell to rock bottom after a run of nine straight losses.

In 16th spot, Union need a point to avoid falling through the trap door.

Even then, staying in 16th will still mean a two-legged playoff against Fortuna Duesseldorf, who finished third in the second division.

Duesseldorf boast a 52,000-seat stadium and are in incredible form, having not lost in the league since early February.

For Union, even a win will not guarantee safety. Union will only be safe if one of Mainz, who play at Wolfsburg, or Bochum, who travel to Werder Bremen, lose.

Freiburg coach Christian Streich, who signs off from a 14-year tenure at the club against Union on Saturday, said his side were “going to play to win”.

“For Union, it’s about staying in the league. They will certainly do everything they can to stay in it, and we will do everything we can to have a nice finish.”

Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund host last-placed Darmstadt in Marco Reus‘ final game at the Westfalenstadion.

Bayern Munich will guarantee second spot with probably just a draw against Hoffenheim while Harry Kane requires six goals to beat Robert Lewandowski‘s single-season record of 41.

One to watch: Christopher Trimmel (Union Berlin)

Union Berlin captain Christopher Trimmel extended his deal with the relegation-threatened club by one year until 2025 on Thursday, promising “the story isn’t over yet.”

Trimmel joined Union in 2014 and is the only player remaining from the club’s first-ever promotion, back in 2019.

The Austria defender has tasted the highest of highs with Union, saying “together we have achieved more than I ever imagined. Union fans, I’m staying.”

Key stats

0 – No team has ever gone through a Bundesliga season unbeaten. Leverkusen are a game away.

71 – Last season, Bayern won the title on 71 points, beating Dortmund on goal difference. If Stuttgart beat Gladbach, they will join Leverkusen and Bayern in having more than 71 points.

17 – Darmstadt have 17 points with a game to go. Only three teams in Bundesliga history have ever recorded a worse points tally.

Fixtures (1330 GMT Saturday)

Union Berlin v Freiburg, Hoffenheim v Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg v Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen v Augsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt v RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund v Darmstadt, Stuttgart v Borussia Moenchengladbach, Werder Bremen v Bochum, Heidenheim v Cologne

Two late goals and 14-time European champions Real Madrid dramatically secured their spot in the final of the UEFA Champions League 2023-24. But, until the 88th minute of the game, the football world was getting ready to embrace an all-German title clash in Europe’s most elite club football competition. Bayern Munich had one leg in the final, having led the scoreboard until the 88th minute when Joselu, a former Stoke City, Newcastle United, and Espanyol striker stepped up to pull his team level, thanks to a mistake from Manuel Neuer, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. A few minutes later, Real Madrid struck again through Joselu, making it 2-1 up, and turning the semi-final clash upside down, just like they have time and again. A repeat of the 2013 Champions League final, between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund was on the cards, but in a matter of minutes, Real Madrid happened.

Gone are the days when Sergio Ramos used to step up in injury time and head home winners for Real Madrid in the Champions League. Los Blancos don’t even have the services of the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo to bank on to produce those clutch moments that got them to 14 Champions League titles, 7 more than the second-placed AC Milan and 8 more than their opponents on the day, Bayern Munich.

Yet, Real Madrid, arguably the most powerful football club in the world, found a way to pull the rabbit out of the hat, with their former youth player Joselu stepping up twice in a matter of minutes to all but seal a spot in the Champions League final for his team. “Real Madrid pulled off a Real Madrid” was to be the headlines in the papers the next day. But, the script had a final twist in store. Well, almost.

Just a minute before the full-time whistle was to be blown, Bayern Munich found themselves in a promising position, with Thomas Muller, Noussair Mazraoui, and Matthijs de Ligt looking to test Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin one last time in the search of an equaliser, but to the surprise of everyone, the linesman raised the offside flag, prompting the referee Szymon Marciniak blew his whistle right before De Ligt could test Lunin with his shot.

What Do The Rules Say?

The Bayern defender did proceed with his plan and found the back of the net, but the goal didn’t count as the referee had blown his whistle. But, was that in accordance with the rules? Well, not really.

As per the latest instructions given to the match officials, assistants are told to keep the flag down on close offsides, and only raise it when a goal is scored or at the end of the attacking move. But that didn’t happen in the game. Bayern players had the right to be angry, and even their head coach Thomas Tuchel went berserk on the sidelines, explaining the same to the match officials. But, to no avail.

The VAR couldn’t be put into use in this specific case as the referee’s whistle was blown, prompting some to suggest that Real Madrid players stopped competing upon hearing that whistle. But, visuals later in the game did suggest that Bayern right-back Mazraoui was marginally onside in that piece of action.

Had the game gone on, Bayern might have scored a legitimate goal and pulled the scores level 1-1. But, the refereeing mistake robbed them of the opportunity to do that.

After the game, De Ligt revealed that the linesman apologised to him for the decision, admitting his mistake. But, not much could be done. A number of Bayern stars, as well as their manager, went on a post-match rant, explaining how the German giants were robbed in a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, once again.

Thomas Muller:“The referee’s decision was strange. This happens often in Madrid, and it happened to me before with 2 Ronaldo offside goals. No one can explain this.”

“I don’t want to say that Real Madrid always has the referees with them but that made the difference today”.

Matthijs de Ligt:“Real, when you think they are dead, have a last breath… that is why they have 14 Champions Leagues. The linesman told me: sorry, I made a mistake. It’s been a shame.”

“It was a disaster. An absolute disaster and it’s clear violation of the rules”.

Thomas Tuchel:“The clear rule is that the scene must continue. The first mistake was made by the linesman, the second by the referee.”

“This would not have happened on the Real Madrid side.”

Max Eberl, Bayern director:“We were all for a German Final. Everyone except the Polish referees!”

It isn’t the first time that Bayern Munich were at the receiving end of some debatable decisions in a Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Back in 2017, a number of controversial decisions by referee Viktor Kassai seemed to have ‘robbed’ the German side of their chance to make it to the semifinals. The referee’s decision to not book Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro and send off Bayern’s Arturo Vidal worked well in favour of Los Blancos, leaving the Bundesliga giants fuming.

In an interview, former Real Madrid defender Marcelo admitted that the referee failed to give a handball offense against his team in a Champions League semi-final against Bayern. The decision eventually resulted in Bayern’s elimination in 2018.

It wasn’t the first time that Bayern Munich had to fight an ‘uneven battle’ against Real Madrid, it might not be the last.

It all could’ve been an all-German UEFA Champions League final, with Borussia Dortmund already through, but, ‘Real Madrid happened’.

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel slammed a late offside call, calling the decision an “absolute disaster” as Real Madrid eliminated his side in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday. With Real 2-1 up having come from behind with two late goals, Joshua Kimmich put in a long pass which was headed centrally by Thomas Mueller for defender Matthijs de Ligt to score in the 12th minute of stoppage time. Real, who drew the Munich tie 2-2, went through 4-3 on aggregate.

The goal did not stand after the linesman raised his flag earlier in the move before the ball went in the net, therefore ruling out a VAR review.

An animated Tuchel ran down the sideline after the decision. After the match, he told broadcaster DAZN the decision was “a disaster, an absolute disaster”.

“We have to let the action play out until the end. That’s the rule, especially since it’s so close to the goal, and it’s so limited.

“The first error is made by the linesman, the second comes from the referee,” Tuchel said.

The 50-year-old coach told broadcaster TNT the decision “felt like a betrayal”.

Speaking at the press conference, Tuchel said the referee apologised but added: “It doesn’t help to say sorry.

“Everyone has to go to their limit, everyone has to suffer, everyone has to play without making mistakes. So the referee has to be at that level too.

“It just doesn’t help to make excuses after the fact.

“You are on the field for this reason, because you are the best there is. And we have the right to expect that until the end.”

The goalscorer De Ligt agreed with his coach, calling the decision decisive in the match.

“The scene at the end, I find it incredible. I can’t understand why he (the referee) doesn’t let the action play out.

“He apologised. I wouldn’t want to say that Real are always lucky, but that decision makes the difference today,” De Ligt told DAZN.

A disappointed Bayern captain Manuel Neuer said: “We’re in the Champions League semi-finals… I think he knows it was a mistake and that you shouldn’t make a decision like that so quickly.”

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is searching for the formula to take his team’s performance up several notches to get past Bayern Munich on Wednesday and reach the Champions League final. ]]>

If Harry Kane is to win the Champions League with Bayern Munich and claim a first career trophy, he will have to get past Real Madrid and England teammate Jude Bellingham. Tuesday’s semi-final first leg in the Bavarian capital pits the two England superstars against each other, less than two months out from Euro 2024 kicking off in the same venue. A decade apart in age, the duo have walked hugely different paths so far in their careers, but have become crucially important to their respective European giants since joining in the summer.

Kane has been the only light to consistently shine in a faltering Bayern side this season.

Less than a year after leaving Germany, Bellingham has established himself alongside Kane and a handful of others as a member of the footballing elite.

And while they will seek to join forces in the summer, they will battle it out on Tuesday to get to Wembley — England’s national stadium and the location of this season’s Champions League final.

‘I hope he’s quiet’

Despite a stellar individual career after coming through the youth academy at Tottenham, Kane, 30, moved to Bayern in August, having left England looking to win a first team trophy.

Long underestimated, Kane has eliminated any doubt about his quality among Europe’s elite at Bayern this season.

While Xabi Alonso‘s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen may have already won the Bundesliga, Kane’s 42 goals this season in all competitions is already the most he’s struck in a campaign.

Bellingham on the other hand was a teenage prodigy and moved to Borussia Dortmund from hometown club Birmingham in 2020.

A fee of 30 million euros ($31.17 million) made him the most expensive 17-year-old ever. Just three years later, he moved to Madrid from Dortmund for 103 million euros.

While Bellingham’s quality was clear when he left Germany, few would have expected him to emerge as one of the best players in the world quite so soon.

Bellingham has carried an injury-hit Madrid through difficult parts of the season and kept them on course for the league title with crucial goals, including late winners in both Clasico fixtures in La Liga.

After scoring a brace in Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Kane said he hoped Bellingham had a night off on Tuesday.

“He’s a great player, as I’ve said before,” Kane told reporters.

“Of course, he’s had an amazing season himself. But from my point of view, I hope he’s quiet in the next two games.”

Kane and Bellingham were “keeping it professional” and had not spoken before Tuesday’s match, but would “catch up before the game and after the game”.

‘A good moment’

Kane and Bellingham have never faced each other before, but have played alongside one another 22 times, losing just four matches.

The two have struck up an on-field partnership, with Bellingham laying on three assists for Kane at international level.

When Kane skied a late penalty in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final loss to France, Bellingham was the first to console the England captain.

Aged just 19, Bellingham became the youngest ever Bundesliga captain when given the armband for Dortmund last season.

The midfielder is widely expected to take over as England skipper whenever Kane decides to hang up the boots.

But while the two represent the Three Lions’ present and future, only one will make it to Wembley.

Kane said he would “hopefully (score) a few” goals against Madrid.

“I’m confident I’m in a good moment and I can put some away,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the atmosphere — the atmosphere against Arsenal (in the quarter-final) was incredible.

“I’m expecting it’ll go another level up and I’m quite excited.”

A 63rd-minute Joshua Kimmich header gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Arsenal and a place in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday. The 3-2 aggregate quarter-final victory means Bayern return to the last-four for the first time since winning the title in 2020. Bayern will face Real Madrid for a place in the final after the 14-time champions overcame holder Manchester City on penalties. The result continues a poor week for Arsenal, who conceded top spot in the Premier League table on Sunday with their first league loss of 2024.

“We can enjoy this one. The first half was cagey and then we upped the tempo,” Bayern striker Harry Kane told TNT.

“These games are tough and we had to find our way through them.

“It’s going to be a tough semi final whoever we play.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said his side had “wanted it so badly”.

“However, you can see with many other clubs that sometimes it takes six or seven years to get to that stage.  We were very close, that is the reality.”

Unlike last week’s four-goal spectacle in London, Wednesday’s match was a cagey affair, with few clear chances for either side in a testy opening half.

Midway through the second-half and with extra-time on the horizon, Kimmich burst through the Arsenal box and headed in a perfect Raphael Guerreiro chip.

Guerreiro, pushed from wing-back to the forwards due to Bayern’s injury woes, impressed as a creative presence when freed up from his usual defensive duties.

Six-time Champions League winners Bayern join fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, who face Paris Saint-Germain, in the semi-finals.

Hit by injuries to several first-team attackers including former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry — who scored along with Kane in the first leg — and Kingsley Coman, Tuchel pushed Guerreiro into an unfamiliar advanced role.

The move worked early, with the Portuguese finding space down the left flank and linking well with Jamal Musiala in the centre.

Arteta opted for the defensive stability of Takehiro Tomiyasu in place of Jakub Kiwior at left-back to neutralise Leroy Sane but the Japanese, who was making his first start since December, notably lacked rythym.

Tomiyasu completely misjudged a Musiala pass early, allowing Sane to stroll through the Arsenal box and force a corner.

Gabriel Martinelli was the visitors’ most dangerous player in the opening half. He scuffed a curling ball just wide of the post after seven minutes and then shot directly at Manuel Neuer with the goal beckoning on the half-hour mark.

Bayern were the better team after the break and went close immediately, Leon Goretzka heading a clever Kimmich cross onto the woodwork.

The pressure began to tell and Bayern broke through after 63 minutes when Kimmich, among the shortest players on the pitch, was allowed to slip through a crowded Arsenal box and head in a Guerreiro chip.

The hosts almost doubled the tally moments after when Kane found an unmarked Sane in the box, but the Germany winger blasted his shot skywards.

Arsenal pushed for an equaliser and went close in stoppage time when Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka lashed at a bouncing ball in the box but could not break through, ending the visitors’ hopes of a return to the Champions League semis for the first time since 2009.

Real Madrid exacted revenge on Manchester City to reach the Champions League semi-finals 4-3 on penalties after withstanding a barrage at the Etihad on Wednesday. Rodrygo gave the visitors an early lead before Kevin De Bruyne hit back for the holders to leave the match level at 1-1 on the night and 4-4 on aggregate. However, City’s defence of the competition came to an end after Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic saw spot-kicks saved by Madrid’s unlikely hero Andriy Lunin.

The Ukrainian, who has deputised this season for the injured Thibaut Courtois, had been at fault for City’s early opener in a thrilling first leg but more than made amends.

Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the last four after the German giants beat Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate.

City had not lost at home in the Champions League since 2018 but the holders were held at bay by a heroic defensive effort by the 14-time European champions despite having 34 attempts on goal.

“It’s so difficult. They are continuously probing with the ball and move you around. Most teams would fall apart when City get on top of you but we stood up really well,” said Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham.

“Today it came down to mentality.”

Madrid were blown away by an early City blitz in a 4-0 defeat at the Etihad 11 months ago as Pep Guardiola’s men went on to win the competition for the first time.

City also edged a semi-final first leg thriller 4-3 on home soil two years ago only to be stunned by a late Madrid fightback in the return leg.

“In other sports for the stats we would win but football is like this and it’s marvellous,” said Guardiola.

“Congratulations to Madrid because their capacity to resist and defend till the end, they did so fantastically. We didn’t manage to score in the final pass or final shot.

“I don’t have any regrets. Always we try to create more and concede less (than the opponent) and we did everything.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s men flipped the script on Wednesday with an assured start that was rewarded in the opening goal.

Bellingham plucked the ball out of the sky with an immaculate touch to set Real roaming down the right.

Vinicius Junior picked out the unmarked Rodrygo and he tapped in the rebound after his first effort was parried by Brazilian international teammate Ederson.

Doku makes difference

If City were slow to warm to their task they quickly had Madrid penned against the ropes but failed to land a telling blow for 76 minutes.

Erling Haaland failed to score for a fourth consecutive clash between the sides but has rarely come up closer than when his looping header came back off the crossbar and left Silva no time to adjust to turn in the rebound.

Lunin was forced to turn behind De Bruyne’s shot from outside the box and the tenacious Antonio Rudiger deflected Jack Grealish‘s effort into the side-netting.

The Madrid goalkeeper saved two more efforts from Grealish at the start of the second half before Guardiola sacrificed the England international for the extra pace of Jeremy Doku.

That proved an inspired change as Rudiger failed to deal with a Doku cross and presented the ball perfectly for De Bruyne to smash into the roof of the net 14 minutes from time.

De Bruyne should have turned the tie around single-handedly as he then blazed a glorious chance over.

However, City’s threat was blunted during extra-time as both Haaland and De Bruyne had to be replaced.

It was Real who had the best chance of the extra 30 minutes when Rudiger sliced over with a clear sight of goal after staying forward from a rare Madrid corner.

But the German defender was still to have the decisive say as he slotted in the final penalty of the shootout.

Ederson’s save from Luka Modric had given City an early lead.

But Lunin calmly collected Silva’s attempted chip down the middle and then denied Kovacic low to his right.

Bellingham, Lucas Vazquez and Nacho put Madrid on the brink before Rudiger landed the fatal blow to City’s hopes of a second consecutive treble.
