Babar Azam “Should’ve Called…”: Ex-Pakistan Star’s Conspiracy Theory On T20 World Cup Exit

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s decision to re-appoint star batter Babar Azam as captain of the team has proved to be a disaster, with the team exiting the T20 World Cup 2024 stage. Babar stepped down as captain of the team after the ODI World Cup last year. While Shan Masood was named captain of the Test side, star pacer Shaheen Afridi took over the reigns in T20 cricket. However, after just one series, PCB made a rash decision to sack Shaheen, confirming Babar’s re-appointment ahead of the T20 World Cup.

However, after Pakistan’s exit from the competition, PCB decision has come under the scanner, with former players criticising Babar for his leadership.

Amid the ongoing debate, former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has launched a scathing attack on Babar, revealing that he didn’t even care conveying PCB’s offer to him with Shaheen.

“If Babar Azam wanted to become captain again, he should’ve called Shaheen Afridi and said that i’ve got the offer,” Basit said during a discussion on ARY News.

Basit also recalled the time when Pakistsan great Younis Khan declined the captaincy offer after Misbah-ul-Haq was removed from the role. He also blamed Babar for causing a rift between himself and Shaheen.

“I will give you an example. Misbah-ul-Haq was being removed from captaincy with Younis Khan set to replace him. Misbah called me and said that I am being removed. I asked him then who is becoming the captain and he said ‘Younis Khan’. I told Younis that ‘this is not the right time for you to become captain. You are touring South Africa for three matches, and if you lose the series, they’ll make you the scapegoat. He declined the offer.’ Babar should’ve done the same, or atleast called Shaheen. This is the reason why their friendship has been affected,” he added.

After the T20 World Cup disaster, PCB is likely to make some harsh calls with reports suggesting that the board is set to sack 8-9 players from the current squad, including Babar and Shaheen.

Basit Ali also believes that Hardik was affected by the decision taken by BCCI to continue with Rohit as the T20I captain after the Cricket World Cup 2023. He thinks that Hardik believed that he will become the T20 captain and his performance has been poor since losing the India captaincy.

“Mumbai Indians lost another match, but I think the mindset has cost them. The way Pandya was made captain before the start of the season, plus Pandya’s performance, has also not been up to the mark this year. These factors have contributed to MI’s downfall,” Basit Ali said on his YouTube channel.

“After the culmination of the 50-over World Cup, Pandya thought he would be the T20 captain of India, and that is why he came to Mumbai. But when BCCI announced that Rohit Sharma will continue leading India, Pandya was probably confused. This is why his performance was affected. He has been very poor as a captain, and only Rohit Sharma can help him,” Ali concluded.

MI need to win all of their matches and depend on other results to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

Following his side’s disappointing defeat to Afghanistan in the World Cup, Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been on the receiving end of some harsh criticism from several current and former players. Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by eight wickets on Monday, their first win over Pakistan in One-Day Internationals. The defeat has been a hard pill to swallow for current and former Pakistan players. While some have suggested that Babar is a clueless, others have urged that the star batter should quit captaincy.

While comparing his current situation with former India skipper Virat Kohli, who has rediscovered his lost form since losing his captaincy, former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has re-iterated that Babar should do the same.

“I told one year ago on my channel that Babar Azam is a very good batter. He should quit captaincy, just like Virat Kohli did. Virat stepped down and looked at his performances. His performance will become better, for sure,” Ali said on ARY News.

Ali revealed that he was labelled as a traitor for asking Babar to step down from captaincy.

“But, as we all know, certain people on social media twisted my words, saying I don’t like Babar Azam and I am a traitor,” he added.

On Pakistan’s loss to Afghanistan, Babar admitted “we are hurt”.

“We are hurt as a team. We must feel the disappointment and my message to my team for the remaining matches will be to learn from this defeat,” Babar had said.

With three defeats from five games, Pakistan now face a formidable South Africa in Chennai on Friday.

Afghanistan also now have two wins in five matches.
