The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) expressed grave concern over the recent surge in brutal violence against children reported across Bangladesh, including the rape and killing of girls and boys in places meant to ensure their safety.

Stressing that “brutality against children must stop”, Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, said that the growing number of reports of brutal and sexual violence against women and children across the country in 2026 underscored the urgent need to strengthen child and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention measures nationwide.

“The culture of impunity enjoyed by perpetrators must end, and the gaps in prevention, reporting, institutional safeguarding, child-friendly police and justice, community protection and social services must be addressed. There is also a need for psychosocial support for the women and children, with far stronger accountability of schools, madrasas, workplaces, neighbourhoods and care settings,” read a statement issued by Ms. Flowers.

“Violence spreads when communities stay silent. UNICEF appeals for children, women, families and community members to report violence, abuse or exploitation through available protection services, including Child Helpline 1098, which provides support and referral services for children in need of assistance,” she added.

According to Ms. Flowers, women and children subjected to abuse deserve to have their dignity respected and their rights protected. She said that the sharing of photos, videos or identifying personal details amounts to further abuse of the victims.

“All who share and reshare are adding to the trauma of survivors, the trauma of families, and the disrespect of the victim,” she added.

UNICEF appealed to the public, media outlets and social media users to respect the rights of the victims and their families by refraining from sharing such content. Instead, it urged people to raise their voices for stronger protection systems and an end to the impunity of perpetrators.

“Every child has the right to protection everywhere, in communities, schools, at home, and even in how their stories and images are treated in public spaces,” Ms. Flowers noted.

Bangladesh’s Shohely Akhter on Tuesday became the first woman cricketer to be banned by the ICC for corruption charges after she was found guilty of attempting to fix matches during the 2023 T20 World Cup. The 36-year-old was banned for five years. Shohely, who bowls off-spin and appeared in two ODIs and 13 T20 Internationals for Bangladesh, admitted breaching five provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code during the tournament in South Africa. The charges were in relation to corrupt approaches made during the matches of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

She was, however, not part of the Bangladesh squad for that tournament. Shohely last turned out for Bangladesh in 2022.

Shohely admitted the charges of breaching Articles 2.1.1, 2.1.3, 2.1.4, 2.4.4 and 2.4.7 of the Code and accepted the five-year ban, starting from February 10, 2025.

The ACU’s investigation centred around Shohely’s conversation on Facebook Messenger with a cricketer, identified by the ICC as ‘Player A’, on February 14, 2023.

During the investigation, the ACU found that Shohely, prior to the Bangladesh versus Australia match in the Women’s T20 World Cup on February 14, contacted her friend and teammate via Facebook Messenger, in which she tried to persuade her to agree to carry out fixes in future Bangladesh matches.

According to the investigation, Shohely told the teammate that her ‘cousin’, who “bets on his phone”, asked her whether she would get out hit wicket during the Australia match.

Shohely also told the said player that she would be paid 2 million Bangladesh Takas if she did the fix, and the money would come from winnings that her ‘cousin’ made from his bets.

As per the ICC investigation, the cricketer also told her teammate that her ‘cousin’ could pay her more if 2 million Takas was not enough, and promised her that full secrecy will be maintained, including deleting her messages “so they no longer existed”.

The player who was approached, however, not only rejected the offers but also reported the matter to the ACU immediately, providing all the voice notes from Shohely, who had deleted those files on her devices. PTI AH AH PDS PDS

New Zealand have ensured a direct entry to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 after Bangladesh lost the last match of their ICC Women’s Championship series against the West Indies in Basseterre on Friday. New Zealand were assured the direct berth as they finished ahead of Bangladesh on the basis of registering more wins (nine to Bangladesh’s eight) after both teams finished with 21 points in the 10-team tournament, that saw all teams play eight three-match series – four at home and four away.

Hosts India and the other five top teams were assured of direct qualification while the bottom four got a chance to make it through a Qualifier.

Australia have won the championship with 39 points while India finished a close second with 37. England (32), South Africa (25), and Sri Lanka (22) are the other teams to have ensured direct berths to the World Cup.

Bangladesh (21), West Indies (18), Pakistan (17) and Ireland (eight) will be joined in the World Cup Qualifier by Scotland and Thailand, the two other highest-ranked teams as of October 31, 2024. The details of the Qualifier will be announced in due course. There are two spots up for grabs through the Qualifier.

India will host the Women’s ODI World Cup for the fifth time in 2025, and its first global women’s tournament since 2016 when the T20 World Cup ran parallel to the men’s event. The 2025 edition is set to be similar to the 2022 edition, with eight teams taking part and playing a total of 31 matches.

Opener G Trisha made a doughty fifty before the left-arm troika of Ayushi Shukla, Sonam Yadav and Parunika Sisodia spun web around Bangladesh batters as India scored a 41-run win to emerge champions in the inaugural Women’s T20 U19 Asia Cup here on Sunday. On a spongy pitch, Trisha’s 52 off 47 balls (5×4, 2×6) guided India to 117 for seven, but Indian spinners cut through the Bangladesh line-up to bundle them out for 76 in 18.3 overs. The biggest partnership in Indian innings, in fact in the match itself, was between Trisha and her skipper Nikki Prasad — a 41-run alliance for the fourth wicket.

India batters struggled against pacer Farjana Easmin, who took four wickets.

Despite that, India were restricted to a below-par total, and Bangladesh seemed well on track for a win once they reached 44 for two in the seventh over.

However, Ayushi (3/17), Sonam (2/13) and Parunika (2/12) took over from that point as Bangladesh lost remaining eight wickets for a mere 32 runs.

Brief scores: India: 117/7 in 20 overs (G Trisha 52; Farjana Easmin 4/32) beat Bangladesh: 76 all out in 18.3 overs (Juairiya Ferdous 22; Ayushi Shukla 3/17, Sonam Yadav 2/13, Parunika Sisodia 2/12).

Tazmin Brits top-scored with 42 as South Africa crushed Bangladesh by seven wickets in their Group B match of the women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai on Saturday. South Africa batters outperformed their counterparts on a languid surface as they chased down the target of 107 in 17.2 overs. Brits (42 off 41 balls, 5x4s) and Anneke Bosch (25) put on 53 for the second wicket after early loss of Laura Wolvaardt (7), while Chloe Tryon (14 not out) and Marizanne Kapp (13 not out) provided the finishing touches. Earlier, Bangladesh went into a shell after an early blow and resorted to a conservative approach on what turned out to be yet another sluggish pitch in this tournament.

South Africa veteran Marizanne Kapp removed Dilara Akter on the second ball of the match for a duck and from thereon, Bangladesh exercised extreme caution which seemed to be the correct approach on such a pitch, but they did not have big hits in their arsenal.

Opener Shathi Rani managed 19 off 30 balls with one six and a four but the others simply struggled.

Sobhana Mostary made 38 off 43 balls while skipper Nigar Sultana made 32 off 38 balls.

Kapp (4-0-10-1) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (4-0-11-1) were the pick among the bowlers for South Africa.

The West Indies were sweating on the fitness of “crucial” Stafanie Taylor after the all-rounder suffered a knee injury at the Women’s T20 World Cup on Thursday. The 33-year-old Taylor was forced to retire hurt on 27 in her team’s eight-wicket win over Bangladesh, which kept alive the 2016 champions’ hopes of making the semi-finals. West Indies will meet undefeated England in their last Group B game on Tuesday. Pool rivals South Africa are also in the running for a semi-final spot.

“I think she’s got a knee problem, but they’re trying to look after her really well. She’s a fighter, and I think she knows how to manage her body pretty well,” said West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews who shared a 52-run opening stand with Taylor on Thursday.

“She’s been putting up a good fight this tournament trying to stay on the park, but I think today at the water break it was just a matter of I guess realising the position we were in the game, and the fact that she could probably go off.”

Matthews, who made 34 in the win which took West Indies to the top of Group B with two wins from three games so far, described her veteran teammate as “a crucial part of our lineup”.

“Luckily we’ve got the last game of the group and more than likely we’re going to have to win the game,” said Matthews of the prospect of facing second-ranked England.

“But it’s a World Cup and if you want to be competing and winning World Cups, you’re going to have to beat the best teams in the world. We’re up for the challenge.”

Off-spinner Karishma Ramharack starred with an impressive four-wicket haul as West Indies cantered to an eight-wicket victory against Bangladesh in the women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah on Thursday. After restricting Bangladesh to 103 for 8, courtesy Ramharack’s fine bowling spell of 4/17 from her four overs, the West Indies overhauled the target with as many as 43 balls to spare. Captain Hayley Matthews (34) and Stafanie Taylor (27 retired hurt) shared 52 runs for the opening wicket before Deandra Dottin made a quickfire 19 not out off just 7 balls with the help of two sixes.

West Indies scored 104 for 2 in 12.5 overs, to notch their second win in three matches and keep themselves afloat for a semifinal spot.

Earlier, put in to bat, Bangladesh were going strong at 58 for 2 at the end of the first 10 overs but they could never accelerate from there. Instead, they lost six wickets in the second half of their innings for the addition of just 45 runs.

Captain Nigar Sultana top-scored for Bangladesh with a 44-ball 39 but she did not get enough support from her batting colleagues.

Bangladesh could hit just two boundaries in the second 10 overs of their innings.

This was Bangladesh’s second loss in three matches.

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty on Thursday described her team’s first victory in a Women’s T20 World Cup match for a decade as “very emotional” and suggested it would create “momentum” for the women’s game at home. Bangladesh secured a 16-run win over Scotland in their World Cup opener in Sharjah after posting what appeared to be a flimsy 119-7 in their 20 overs. Their bowling attack, however, tied the Scots down and restricted them to 103-7.

“I would say that a win after 10 years, we all are very emotional because we have been waiting for this victory for a long time,” said Joty who was playing in her 100th T20I.

“No matter how good the cricket we play, if it doesn’t translate into victory, it means nothing. And I would say for women’s cricket, after a long time, I feel like we have done something.

“We have always said about Bangladesh that we have to create momentum and then we will move forward with that momentum. Now it seems like we are going to dream of doing something bigger. Similarly, the fans and family who support us in Bangladesh are dreaming that we can do something better than that.”

The momentum for women’s cricket in Bangladesh would have had a far bigger boost had they been staging the event as planned. Instead, weeks of widespread political unrest in Bangladesh, which eventually led to the installation of an interim government, saw the tournament switched to the United Arab Emirates, with Bangladesh remaining as nominal hosts.

“Initially it was very heartbreaking because we always bear in mind that we are going to play in front of our home crowd,” said Joty.

“But still, the people who came here today, it was brilliant.

“As a professional player and as a professional team, I think we should move on from the disappointment, not think about what could have been.

“We were able to play here and we are pretty fortunate. We all are healthy and we all are safe and representing our country and got a good win in front of a good number of people.

“Back home, they were very happy. We will get the reaction of our family and friends and fans. And definitely, they’re in a very good mood right now.”

Scotland’s Saskia Horley, who took 3-13 at the back end of the Bangladesh innings, admitted there was “a bit of disappointment” about losing their first T20 World Cup match but said there was “a hell of a lot of passion and pride” about competing at the World Cup.

“You know, our captain, Kathyrn Bryce, just said like, we’re going to be history makers here. Anything above that is a bonus.”

Bangladesh remain in Sharjah for their next Group B game against England on Saturday while Scotland, who were playing their first ever T20 World Cup match, will be up against former champions West Indies in Dubai on Sunday.
