West Indies pacer Jayden Seales achieved a remarkable feat with his four-wicket haul on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh on Monday at Sabina Park in Kingston. Seales scripted his name on the record book as he delivered the best economical spell in men’s Test cricket since 1978. He achieved the milestone against Bangladesh in the 2nd Test. The Caribbean bowler picked up four wickets and gave just five runs in his 16-over spell. The 23-year-old had an economy rate of 0.30, which is considered the best figure a bowler achieved in Test cricket since 1978. Earlier in 2015, India pacer Umesh Yadav held the top place on the chart with a figure of 3/9 with an economy rate of 0.42.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat against the Caribbeans in the second Test.

Shadman Islam (64 runs from 137 balls, 5 fours and 1 six) and skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz (36 runs from 75 balls, 2 fours) were the only top batters for the tourists and they propelled Bangladesh to 164 in the first inning. Shahadat Hossain Dipu (22 runs from 89 balls, 2 fours) assisted the other two batters to add some runs on the scoreboard.

The rest of the Bangladesh batters crumbled infront of the West Indies bowling attack.

Jayden Seales led the Caribbean bowling attack as he picked up four wickets and gave just four runs. Shamar Joseph too had a good spell in the second Test as he bagged three wickets. Meanwhile, Kemar Roach took two wickets and Alzarri Joseph picked one wicket in their respective spells.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis opened for the Caribbeans in their first inning. The openers could only make a 25-run partnership. Nahid Rana made the first breakthrough of the inning as he removed Louis from the inning.

West Indies ended the second day at 70/1, with Kraigg Brathwaite and Keacy Carty unbeaten on 33 (115) and 19 (60), respectively.

Rishabh Pant has once again proven himself as one of the most valuable players in the Indian cricket team. The star suffered a horrific car crash in December 2022 and missed more than a year of action as he was recovering from it. He made his comeback to competitive cricket with IPL 2024 before winning the T20 World Cup with the Indian team. The southpaw was also part of India’s three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka. After this, Pant played the Duleep Trophy for India B, but interestingly, he was not made the skipper and instead played under Abhimanyu Easwaran‘s captaincy. While the move surprised many cricket pundits, it also raised doubts over Pant’s value as a captain.

However, Pant’s terrific performances in the following two Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand have once again put him among the most valuable players. Former India crickter Aakash Chopra praised the wicketkeeper-batter’s comeback and asked whether it was a right choice to not name him the captain during Duleep Trophy.

“When the Duleep Trophy teams were picked, Rishabh Pant was selected, but Abhimanyu Easwaran was the captain of that team. Pant featured as a player but not a captain in that tournament. We were left wondering if he is no longer a captaincy candidate,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

“But now that home season is over, we suddenly feel he is the captain, he is the saviour, our crisis man, one who can even play in poor batting conditions. He is the only one who can play with dominance, playing with so much confidence, he can hit sixes and has the defensive game.

“So was Pant misjudged? I mean, he was not named as a captain in the Duleep Trophy, and now he is the most valuable Indian player in Test cricket, or even across the globe.”

Virat Kohli fell cheaply against Bangladesh in 2nd innings of Chepauk Test© BCCI/Sportzpics

Former India cricketer and reputed commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has pointed out what he feels is a peculiar similarity between India batting greats Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli did not enjoy a good return to Test cricket, scoring 6 and 17 in his two innings against Bangladesh in the first Test. Playing his first Test since January, Kohli failed to fire, choosing to not review an LBW decision that was later shown to be not out. Manjrekar drew an odd comparison between Kohli and Tendulkar.

“He’s not enjoying batting in India as much. Like (Sachin) Tendulkar, I think he feels more at home away from home,” said Manjrekar, analysing Kohli’s form on the ESPNCricinfo YouTube channel.

“We saw in South Africa how well he played. He was by far India’s best batter. But it’s fine, better to get runs away from home than at home,” added Manjrekar.

Kohli was wrongly given out LBW in the second innings after replays showed that the ball had kissed his bat before hitting his pad. However, Kohli decided not to go for a review, despite batting partner Shubman Gill seemingly asking him to go for it.

“Felt bad for Virat today. He obviously didn’t think he had hit it. Just wanted to know from Gill if the ball was hitting stumps. Despite Gill encouraging him to go for the review anyway, he walked away dejected wanting to keep the 3 reviews for his team,” Manjrekar posted on X.

Kohli has been out of red ball action since the two-match Test series tour of South Africa in January 2024. He had missed the entire five-match home Test series against England after that due to the birth of his second child.

Despite his low score, Kohli racked up yet another achievement in international cricket, notching up 12,000 runs on home soil. He ranks second in that list among Indians, only behind Tendulkar.

India’s seasoned spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was unable to pick between his century against England in 2021 and his latest hundred against Bangladesh in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. It was the same venue in 2021 against England when Ashwin dug deep and turned the tides in India’s favour with his 106 off 148 deliveries. Three years later, when Bangladesh managed to reduce India to 144/6, Ashwin took the mantle of putting runs on the board alongside Ravindra Jadeja.

His 113 set the tone of the opening Test and allowed India to exude control on a benign surface in Chennai. After the end of the second day’s play, Ashwin was unable to pick which century he liked better out of the two.

“Both. [The England Test] had so much riding on it. We lost the first one and came to the second. Last time, when I played at Chennai, I felt like I was making sort of a comeback in more than one way. I was a little here and there. I went to Australia and came back here. That was different, and I enjoyed it,” Ashwin said at the end of the second day, as quoted from ESPNcricifo.

“I think my batting has come along a lot better since that particular game. I worked quite a lot on how I can maximise my shots, maximise my game. I worked on how I can play fast bowling and all that sort of stuff. I’m glad it’s coming out nicely,” he added.

The 38-year-old relied on the experience that he has gained over his illustrious career to pull India out of a tricky situation. He stayed on the crease, took his time, but scored runs as he was aware of everything that was on offer from the first delivery.

“At this stage, I am able to sequence that and split both of them and see as a cricketer. So, when I walked there [to bat], the only thing I wanted to do was settle down my game. The mind can play tricks because I am a bowler who plays on 12, 18, and 24 balls ahead when I am sequencing it. As a batter, I shouldn’t do that. I just use my experience when I get in. So, now it’s more about just focussing on the ball and hitting it as I see it,” Ashwin said.

Apart from Ashwin and Jadeja’s heroics, India dictated the flow of play by putting in their pacers to great effect. Jasprit Bumrah (four), Akash Deep (two) and Mohammed Siraj (two) combined to pick eight wickets, forcing Bangladesh to fold on 149. India came out to bat once again and ended the day with a massive lead of 308 runs.

For the last one month, Bangladesh is on a mission to reverse a long-standing trend of left-arm spinners leading their bowling. Two beanpole quicks are at the forefront of that changing of baton – Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana. They arrived on these shores after a sensational effort against Pakistan, but India could be a daunting destination even for the more experienced ones. But on the opening day of the first Test against India here on Thursday, Mahmud (4/58) and Rana (1/80) justified the hype around them, rather contrastingly.

Mahmud owns lively pace but banks more on an exemplary seam position and other variations to make an impact, whereas Rana is the battering ram, looking to unsettle the batters with raw pace.

It was evident in their respective approach at Chepauk.

But Mahmud was more successful this day, taking four wickets – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant – a list that still remains a dream even for the more reputed names.

Rana hustled Indians occasionally. He hurried Yashasvi Jaiswal with a 148 kmph corker, forcing the opener to edge it to the cordon.

But this silent revolution in Bangladesh cricket is more carefully planned than organic.

“Look at Nahid and Mahmud, we were trying to find some genuine fast bowlers for sometime now. I am not belittling spinners, who have done great work for our country.

“But if you need to be a successful cricketing nation across the world, you need world-class fast bowlers, like when we go to England or Australia,” Alamgir Kabir, a former Bangladesh pacer who is a mentor to both Mahmud and Rana, told PTI.

Kabir underlined the role of a robust grassroot level system in Bangladesh in this new rush of quality pacers.

“I will not call it perfect or anything, but we have a strong grassroot system where coaches and talent spotters are committed to what they do. There are a lot of talented kids around Bangladesh playing tape-ball and tennis ball cricket, who need the right kind of encouragement at the right time.

“Take the case of Nahid, he is coming from tape ball cricket. I found him and took to my academy and give training. It’s like polishing a diamond,” said Kabir, who is now a coach at the Clemons Cricket Academy in Dhaka.

But Sridharan Sriram, the former India batter who coached Bangladesh in the past, had a word of caution for the tyros.

“They are talented for sure, and are doing well at present. But the challenge for them is to sustain this journey and grow into the role. It is not easy. Hopefully, there will be right advice and support for them,” Sriram told PTI.

Sriram was impressed by Mahmud’s outing as well.

“Four wickets…yeah, he did well. He showed good acumen to exploit the favourable conditions in the morning. I haven’t worked with them a lot, but this Bangladesh team looks a good mixture of youth and experience. Hopefully, the young cricketers will remain on course,” said Sriram.

Kabir has little doubt about the focus of these young players.

“They are all very motivated. Recently, there was some unrest in the country and these kids were playing cricket in Pakistan.

“Obviously, they were concerned, but showed good maturity to focus on cricket once they entered the field and after the match they will call and ask for updates (about the turbulence). The result is there for all to see -a 2-0 win over Pakistan,” he added.

Bangladesh pacers have also been fortunate to have come under the tutelage of South African great Allan Donald and former West Indian pacer Otis Gibson.

They opened a whole new perspective about bowling, particularly about pace bowling, to upcoming Bangladesh bowlers.

“Look, I think Mashrafe (Mortaza) was the first pacer of some reputation to come from Bangladesh then Taskin (Ahmed) followed. But now, we have a good bunch – Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain etc, who will take our bowling forward,” said Kabir.

But the rise of these new crop of pacers is gradually changing the image around Bangladesh bowling unit.

Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha explained it.

“The point of difference is the fear factor. When a bowler comes up to 150 kph, it is human nature (to get afraid).

“We have a certain reaction time. So, it challenges your reaction time and decision making. You can bring that fear factor into the opposition,” said Hathurusingha.

The wheels of change have been set in motion and Bangladesh needs to ensure that it keeps rolling.

Nuwan Thushara‘s maiden hat-trick and Kusal Mendis‘ career-best 86 helped Sri Lanka clinch a three-match T20I series in a decider match against Bangladesh at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday. Thushara bagged a maiden over hat-trick and finished with figures of 5-20, guiding his team to a 28-run victory in the series decider. Bangladesh were bowled out for 146 in the final over. While celebrating the series win, Sri Lanka players reignited the ‘timed out’ controversy – an incident that involved Angelo Mathews from 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews was dismissed in a bizarre manner, having failed to make it to the pitch on time in the World Cup match against Bangladesh.

According to the timed-out rule, the batter has to make the pitch within 3 minutes (2 minutes in World Cups) of the dismissal of the previous player and be ready to face the next delivery.

While Mathews had entered the ground, he encountered some issues with his helmet, which required him to call for a replacement. In the process, the maximum allowed time had already passed.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Has decided to appeal, and according to the rules, the officials had to give Mathews out. In the process, Mathews had to depart without facing a single delivery.

The issue sparked huge controversy with experts, former and current cricketers having divided opinions.

Chasing a target of 175 runs, Bangladesh suffered back-to-back three blows in the 4th over as Thushara removed Najmul Hossain Shanto (1), Towhid Hridoy (0) and Mahmudullah (0).

Thushara then continued his fiery form in the 6th over as he removed Soumya Sarkar (11) with his 138.2kph yorker length ball. Wanindu Hasaranga got Jaker Ali LBW for 4 in ninth over.

Rishad Hossain (53) and Taskin Ahmed (31) fought back bravely but the damage done in the fourth over was too big for Bangladesh to cross the line.

Earlier, Mendis’ 86 set up Sri Lanka’s total of 174/7. After Sri Lanka lost their opener Dhananjaya de Silva in the fourth over of the innings, Mendis opened his hands and the batters accelerated the pace with big shots all around the ground.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Mendis hammered Mustafizur Rahman for 18 runs in the 10th over. Mendis brought up his half-century in the 12th over. Mustafizur removed Hasaranga for 15. In the 14th over, Mendis smoked a boundary and maximum off Mahedi Hasan, gathering 14 runs.

Taskin Ahmed finally provided his team with a solid breakthrough as he removed Mendis, who smashed 86 runs. Dasun Shanaka took charge as he smoked one four and six off Rishad Hossain in the 18th over. Shanaka’s wicket in the last over’s final ball ended Sri Lanka’s innings at 174/7.

Kane Williamson marked his return to international cricket with an elegant half-century while Daryl Mitchell blazed away to a 67-ball 89 as New Zealand crushed Bangladesh by eight wickets in the ICC World Cup on Friday. This was the Kiwis’ third win in as many matches, completing the chase of 246 with plenty to spare. Playing in his first match of the ongoing showpiece after finally recovering fully from the knee injury he had sustained during the IPL in April and the ensuing surgery, Williamson showed his class with an old-fashioned calculative ODI batting that fetched him 78 runs from 107 balls.

At the other end, Daryl Mitchell looked in a hurry as he smashed fours and sixes at will to seal the issue in his team’s favour with 43 balls left.

Having found two good-looking boundaries at the start of his innings, Williamson decorated his knock with eight fours and a six, while the Mitchell hammered six fours and four sixes during his breezy, unbeaten stay in the middle.

The win helped New Zealand take the top spot in the World Cup 2023 points table, while South Africa slipped to the second spot. Despite the loss on Fridaty, Bangladesh remained at the sixth spot.

See the updated table here –

Restricted to 245 for nine after being asked to bat first, Bangladesh bowlers had no answer to the Kiwi response but they did a few things wrong, including their skipper and biggest weapon with the ball Shakib al Hasan completing his quota of overs instead of keeping them for the end overs.

The New Zealand dressing room, however, was not happy to see an exhausted Williamson walking back retired hurt after attempting a flashy drive. This was after he had taken a blow to his left thumb.

New Zealand, by then, had done enough to ensure victory.

Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 66 as Bangladesh battled hard in the face of New Zealand’s disciplined bowling effort to post 245 for nine.

Mushfiqur’s 75-ball knock, alongside valuable contributions from Shakib (40 off 51 balls) and Mahmudullah (41 off 49), lifted Bangladesh after they were reeling at 56 for four in the 13th over.

The Tigers began on a disastrous note, losing Litton Das (0) off the very first delivery of the game to pacer Trent Boult, as his attempted flick was collected by Matt Henry in fine leg.

Tanzid Hasan (16 ) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (30) tried to put up some resistance before the former fell prey to pacer Lockie Ferguson, offering a catch to Devon Conway in square leg.

Notably, Tanzid was dropped when he was yet to open his account by Tom Latham in the opening over itself. It was a tough chance, nonetheless.

When the score read 56, Bangladesh lost Miraz to Ferguson, followed by Najmul Hossain Shanto (7) to spinner Glenn Phillips.

Losing two wickets in a space of three balls was a body blow for Bangladesh, only for Shakib and Mushfiqur to take control for some time with a 96-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

However, Shakib appeared to be struggling in the hot and humid conditions here, taking a medical break before eventually being dismissed by Ferguson in the 30th over.

The pitch appeared to be assisting the pacers, and Ferguson looked to capitalise with his ‘bowl short and quick’ strategy.

Also, the strip utilised was different from the one that helped the spinners during the India-Australia contest on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Mushfiqur brought up his 48th ODI half-century and was cleverly attacking the loose deliveries, while spinners Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra bowled tight lines.

In the 36th over, pacer Matt Henry gave the Kiwis relief as he bowled Mushfiqur with a beautiful slower off-cutter that stayed low and uprooted the off-stump, leaving Bangladesh at 175 for six.

After losing the seventh wicket in Towhid Hridoy for 13, Mahmudullah and Taskin Ahmed (17) added 34 runs for the eighth wicket before the latter gave a catch to Daryl Mitchell off Santner.

While Mustafizur Rahman was the ninth man out in the 48th over, the final pair managed to bat out the remaining deliveries.

Ferguson took 3 for 49, while Boult grabbed 2 for 45, including his 200th ODI wicket. Meanwhile, Santner was the most economical of them all, finishing with figures of 1/31 in 10 overs.
