Several records were broken during the T20 World Cup 2024, Group C match between West Indies and Afghanistan on Tuesday. Asked to bat first, West Indies posted 218/5 in 20 overs with Nicholas Pooran playing a blistering knock of 98 off 53 balls. So far, this was the highest total in the ongoing T20 World Cup. However, the main highlight of the innings was Pooran’s entry into elite list of batters, who smashed 36 runs in an over in a World Cup match.

The memorable feat achieved in the fourth over, when Pooran unleashed his fury on Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai.

In that over, the 28-year-old batter smashed three sixes and three boundaries. To make things worse, Omarzai ended bowling one no-ball, where Pooran again smashed a boundary. Later, he also leaked five runs from wide.

This was the second time in 2024 that 36 runs were scored in an over against Afghanistan. Earlier this year, the Indian duo of Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh also achieved the same feat, when they thrashed Karim Janat

Apart from this, the Caribbean side registered the record for the highest powerplay score in the history of the T20 World Cup. They scored 92 in the first six overs and surpassed the previous record of 91 runs set by the Netherlands against Ireland in 2014 in Bangladesh’s Sylhet International Stadium.

England is ranked third in the list of powerplay scoring, having scored 89 runs against South Africa at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium in 2016.

Talking about the overall stats, this was the fourth highest powerplay score in the history of T20Is. The highest score was 102/0, registered by South Africa against West Indies in 2023.

Pooran also registered the highest individual score in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The 28-year-old batter scored 98 in 53 balls to help his team reach a dangerous 218-run total in the final group game before the Super Eight phase.

The wicketkeeper-batter broke the previous mark of 94 not out set by Aaron Jones of the United States versus Canada.

Ishan Kishan’s Horror Run Continues, Departs For Four-Ball Duck Against Gujarat Titans https://artifex.news/ishan-kishans-horror-run-continues-departs-for-four-ball-duck-against-gujarat-titans-5303676/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 16:39:22 +0000 https://artifex.news/ishan-kishans-horror-run-continues-departs-for-four-ball-duck-against-gujarat-titans-5303676/ Read More “Ishan Kishan’s Horror Run Continues, Departs For Four-Ball Duck Against Gujarat Titans” »

Ishan Kishan‘s horrible run of form continued as he was dismissed for a four-ball duck during Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 match against Gujarat Titans on Sunday. Kishan, who was snubbed from the BCCI central contracts list, has struggled to score runs in the past few matches and once again, he was not able to score big. Kishan faced just four balls in the match before he was dismissed by Azmatullah Omarzai in the first over of the Mumbai Indians innings. Kishan ended up playing away from his body while tackling an out-swinger from Omarzai and Wriddhiman Saha completed the catch comfortably.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) was at his absolute best in his first IPL game in two years, firing in his express yorkers at will to help Mumbai Indians restrict Gujarat Titans to 168/6.

Young left-hander B Sai Sudharsan top-scored with a 45 off 39 balls, while Rahul Tewatia made 22 off 15 balls down the order.

But the evening, without an iota of doubt, belonged to Bumrah, who missed the whole of last edition due to a lower back stress fracture.

He dismissed David Miller and Sudharsan in the 17th over in a space of three deliveries in what could be a potential game-changer.

Assuming that there could be dew later in the evening, MI’s new skipper Hardik Pandya invited GT to bat first, and Shubman Gill in his first game as captain was up to the task.

Looking to make an impact against his former team, Pandya opened the bowling and Wriddhiman Saha (19) slapped a wide ball through the off-side to begin GT’s campaign with a boundary.

Up against Gill, Pandya erred in line and the stylish batter used his wrists to whip him off his pads for a four, as the MI captain conceded 11 runs after his surprise move to start the proceedings at the expense of one of the world’s best bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah.

As Saha got a few useful boundaries, Gill found the fence with consummate ease as GT were off to a flyer.

However, Bumrah’s introduction in the fourth over brought MI instant success as the lead pacer sent back Saha with an express yorker, hitting the base of the middle stump. The former India stumper couldn’t bring his bat down in quick time.

Spin was brought on in Shams Mulani and Gill rocked back to cut the left-arm spinner through covers for a four. The GT captain then got down on one leg to slog-sweep Mulani for a huge six over deep square-leg.

Piyush Chawla bowled an economical first over, even as GT managed 47 runs for the loss of one wicket in the powerplay.

Chawla continued and Gill tried to disturb his rhythm, but failed. He danced down the ground to hoick him but did not get the necessary elevation, as Rohit Sharma, who is normally not seen fielding in such positions, judged it well to complete a neat catch in the deep.

The experienced Chawla snared the big fish with a googly as Gill (31 off 22 balls) walked back after getting his eye in, much to the relief of the hordes of Mumbai supporters at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

However, with Sai Sudharsan determined to start from where he left in the title clash against CSK last season with a magnificent 96, MI knew they had their task cut out.

South African pacer Gerald Coetzee accounted for Azmatullah Omarzai (17), while the brilliant Bumrah sent back David Miller and Sudharsan in one over before Rahul Tewatia lifted GT with his lusty hits.

IPL 2024: Ashish Nehra Back This New Signing To Become “Main Actor” For Gujarat Titans https://artifex.news/ipl-2024-ashish-nehra-back-this-new-signing-to-become-main-actor-for-gujarat-titans-5255936/ Sun, 17 Mar 2024 16:44:39 +0000 https://artifex.news/ipl-2024-ashish-nehra-back-this-new-signing-to-become-main-actor-for-gujarat-titans-5255936/ Read More “IPL 2024: Ashish Nehra Back This New Signing To Become “Main Actor” For Gujarat Titans” »

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) marks the start of a new leadership era at Gujarat Titans (GT). The 2022 champions will be led by young batter Shubman Gill following Hardik Pandya‘s trade to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024 mini auction. With mixture of youth and experience, the franchise made some sensible buys at the IPL auction. While the franchise roped in Australian pacer Spencer Johnson and veteran Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav, GT also bought uncapped batter Shahrukh Khan for Rs 7.4 crore.

Ahead of the start of the new season, Nehra has backed Shahrukh to become the “main actor” for GT in the lower middle order.

“We’re going to see Shahrukh Khan become the main actor. IPL is a very long tournament,” Nehra told the media.

Nehra also emphasised that the players will have to take care of the body as the conditions will get tough during the latter stage of the tournament.

“It’s not like we’re playing just three, four, five matches. Conditions are also difficult in May and June. It will be hard on the players, especially fast bowlers. Injuries can also happen. So every player we have is important and those we have are experienced,” he added.

Nehra also said that new signings Johnson and Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai will have to play a key role for the team.

“Spencer Johnson, if you see, wherever he’s played, he’s played well. Azmatullah Omarzai again, he has all the skills in this world as an all-rounder and we are very hopeful that they’ll have a great IPL,” Nehra explained.

Speaking on the type of pitches for their home games, Nehra said that they are yet to make a call on the same.

“We have not decided that but I don’t think so… In the end, you just have to play good cricket. Black soil or red soil, there’s not too much difference. It’s just a little bounce,” the former India pacer suggested.

World Cup 2023 points table: Afghanistan’s stupendous run at the Cricket World Cup continued on Monday as they got the better Sri Lanka. Having already beaten defending champions England and Pakistan, Afghanistan notched their third win of the marquee event with quite ease. After restricting former Cricket World Cup champions Sri Lanka to just 241, Afghanistan eased to the target. Before the game, Afghanistan were placed seventh. But with the convincing seven wicket win, Afghanistan have climbed up to the fifth spot ahead of the likes of heavyweights Pakistan and England. They now have a serious chance of claiming a stake in the top -four.

India are on the top of the Cricket World Cup points table (12 points, 6 matches, NRR +1.405) while South Africa (10 points, 6 games, NRR +2.032) are second. New Zealand (8 points, 6 games, NRR +1.232) and Australia (8 points, 6 games, NRR +0.970).

Feisty fifties by Rahmat Shah, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullh Omarzai helped Afghanistan defeat tentative Sri Lanka by seven wickets in their World Cup match in Pune on Monday. Rahmat (62), Shahidi (58 not out), who completed 2000 ODI runs, and Omarzai (73 not out) led the chase with aplomb as Afghanistan overhauled the target of 242 in just 45.2 overs.

Earlier, Sri Lanka produced a dull batting effort to get bundled out for 241.

They were rocked by pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi who grabbed four wickets conceding just 34 runs in his quota of 10 overs.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka: 241 all out in 49.3 overs (Pathum Nissanka 46; Fazalhaq Farooqi 4/34) Afghanistan: 242 for 3 in 45.2 overs (Rahmat Shah 62, Hashmatullah Shahidi 58 not out, Azmat Omarzai 73 not out) by 7 wickets.
