It was indeed an emotional moment for legendary India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as he called time on his international career on Wednesday. The news came as a shock to the cricket world as nobody had any clue about it. Just when Ashwin was spotted sharing a warm hug with Virat Kohli in the dressing room on the final day of India’s Brisbane Test vs Australia, many started speculating on social media that he is set to retire. The rumour came out to be true and Ashwin announced his decision to hang up his boots at the highest level in the post-match press conference.

Ashwin decided not to take any questions from media. Explaining the reason behind such a decision, he said that it was a “very emotional” moment for him and he couldn’t have answered the questions in a “right way”.

“I would not be taking any questions but it’s truly a very emotional moment. I don’t think I am in a position where I will be answering the questions in the right way. Please pardon me for that. Once again, that’s my time,” said Ashwin at the press conference after the game.

Ashwin featured in 106 Tests, picked up a whopping 537 wickets, including 37 five-wicket hauls, and amassed 3,503 runs. One can even argue that his contributions to Indian cricket are far greater than just what those staggering numbers indicate.

The crafty spinner is the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Tests overall and second-highest for India behind legendary spinner Anil Kumble (619 scalps). He also has 2nd most five-wicket hauls in Tests, behind Sri Lankan spin icon Muttiah Muralitharan (67).

With Ashwin stepping down from the international stage, he is truly leaving behind a tremendous legacy and massive boots to fill for the youngsters who will come in to make up for his presence.

Former Indian captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar reacted to Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement decision’s impact on the team and said the allrounder the same what Dhoni did during 2014-15 Asutralia series. Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket immediately following the drawn Gabba Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar drew parallels to MS Dhoni’s mid-series retirement during the 2014-15 Test series in Australia, arguing that such decisions disrupt team planning. “He could have said, listen after the end of the series, I won’t be available for selection for India. What it does is that, similarly when MS Dhoni retired at the end of the 3rd Test in 2014-15 series, it leaves you one short,” Gavaskar told broadcasters.

“The selection committee has picked so many players for a tour with a purpose. If there are any injuries they can select from the reserve players to have in the team. So, Sydney is somewhere where there is a lot of support on offer for spinners. So India could have played with two spinners. You never know. He could have been there for sure. I don’t know how the pitch in Melbourne will be like. Normally, you tend to look at the end of the series. That’s it. In the middle, it is not usual,” he added.

When asked if Washington Sundar was being groomed to replace Ashwin, Gavaskar admitted it seemed likely. “Maybe Washington Sundar is ahead of him. Rohit mentioned that Sundar is flying out tomorrow. So, this marks the end of Ashwin as an international cricketer. He has been one heck of a cricketer,” Gavaskar said.

Menwahile, Sundar posted a heartfelt post for state-mate Ashwin on Instagram, following the allrounder’s retirement. “More than just a teammate – Ash anna, you have been an inspiration, a mentor and a true champion of the game. It’s been an honour to share the field and the dressing room with you.”

“Coming from the same state of TN, I have grown up watching you from the close corners of Chepauk to playing against you and alongside you. Every moment has been a privilege. The learnings, both on and off the field are something I will carry with me forever. Wishing you success and happiness in whatever comes next,” the post read.

Ashwin’s retirement comes at a crucial juncture in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the series delicately poised 1-1 with the drawn Gabba Test. His absence leaves a gap in India’s bowling arsenal, especially as they prepare for the upcoming Test in Melbourne and Sydney, traditionally a spinner-friendly venue.

KL Rahul is among the Indian batters who have impressed in the ongoing Test series against Australia. Rahul was given a chance to open for India in the absence of Rohit and he returned with scores of 26 and 77 in Perth. Rohit entered the playing XI from the second Test but Rahul continued to play as an opener. Of late, Rahul came up with a gritty 84-run knock in India’s first innings at the third Test in Brisbane. While heaping praises on his batting, ex-India cricketer Harbhajan Singh suggested that there is a “massive scope of improvement” in the average of Rahul.

Harbhajan shared his views during commentary on Star Sports when the broadcaster showed Rahul’s Test batting stats. The right-handed batter scored 3128 runs at an average of 34. in 55 Test matches he played (excluding India vs Australia Brisbane Test).

“He is a proper batter. His technique is excellent and he has the game for Test cricket. He knows how to leave the ball and has all types of shots. He plays spin and fast bowling well. He plays the short ball well, but I want to see an increase of 20-25 in his average,” said Harbhajan.

“Considering his stature and the kind of player he is, his average should be around 50-55. I see a massive scope of improvement from here. He has had an up-and-down career. He has been in and out of the team and couldn’t play cricket for a long time due to injury.

“I hope he is less injured now and plays continuous cricket. This slot is good for him. He opens and likes to play balls. He plays long innings. We expect his graph to keep moving upwards and when we talk about KL Rahul after five years, it will be enjoyable if the average is 50-55.”

The playing XI picked by the Indian cricket team for the third Test against Australia has come under harsh criticism. Earlier, former India batter Aakash Chopra criticised the team’s inconsistency with spinners and now ex-India spinner Harbhajan Singh has also talked on the same topic. Notably, India rested both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test and went ahead with Washington Sundar. In the second game, the Rohit Sharma-led side rested Sundar to make place for Ashwin, while the very next game saw Ashwin being replaced by Jadeja.

When asked about his opinion on constant changes in the team, in reference to Jadeja’s inclusion, Harbhajan termed the team selection ‘unacceptable’.

“If I respond to this question, headlines would be made,” Harbhajan started while answering during his commentary on Star Sports.

“Don’t think what happened was right. Sundar played the first Test but your prime spinners were (R) Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja. You played Sundar but should’ve persisted with him. You dropped him to bring Ashwin in, who didn’t bowl bad by any means. I thought Ashwin or Sundar should’ve been picked for the third Test but Jadeja was picked. It has become a big question for me,” he added.

Notably, Ashwin is the Indian bowler with second-most Test wickets. With the tally of 537, he is behind legendary Anil Kumble (619 wickets) and ahead of great Kapil Dev (434 wickets). Jadeja is not much behind in the list, holding the fifth spot with 319 wickets.

“Maybe they (Team India) don’t trust any spinner. One has over 300 wickets, other over 500 wickets. This team selection isn’t acceptable to me. I wanted to see either Ashwin or Sundar,” said Harbhajan, who holds the fourth spot in the list of India’s highest wicket-takers in Tests with 417 scalps.

“Now that Jadeja has been picked, I hope he plays next match too as chopping on changing would lower the confidence of players,” he concluded.

Only 13.2 overs were bowled on Day 1 of the 3rd Test between India and Australia with rain causing an early suspension to the day’s play on Saturday. Put into bat by India captain Rohit Sharma, Australia finished the day on 28-0 with Usman Khawaja 19 not out and Nathan McSweeney unbeaten on four. The rain persisted throughout the day and the umpires eventually called off play midway through the final session. To make up for the lost overs, the play will begin 30 minutes prior (5:20 AM IST) to the scheduled start (5:50 AM IST), but only if the weather allows.

There was plenty of rain in Brisbane in the lead up to the match, before clear sky appeared on the eve of the match, raising hopes of a full day’s play on Saturday.

As as per the forecast, the rain is likely to return on Day 2 as per the Australian government’s Bureau of Meteorology.

“Partly cloudy. Medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon. Light winds becoming southeasterly 15 to 25 km/h in the morning then becoming light in the evening,” the forecast suggested.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued a red alert, as per Accuweather, with “minor flood warning”. There is more than 50 per cent chance of rain on Sunday.

After a week of downpours in Brisbane, Rohit would have expected plenty of movement from his opening bowlers, but they struggled to find their length.

Spearhead Jasprit Bumrah appeared down on pace early and Mohammed Siraj was equally unthreatening.

The forecasted rain first came 25 minutes into the day’s play, causing a half-hour delay, and when the players returned Akash Deep at last found the perfect length with movement in the air and off the wicket.

He troubled McSweeney in particular, but 35 minutes later much heavier rain sent the players from the field for the second time.

India vs Australia 3rd Test Live Streaming and Live Telecast: It will be a Test of character for the Indian cricket team as it faces a resurgent Australia in the third Test of the five-match series at The Gabba, Brisbane. The visitors won the first game by 295 runs to take an early lead in the series, despite the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. Jasprit Bumrah, the Player of the Match, not only shone with his performance in bowling but also captained the side in absence of Rohit.

Came in the right-handed batter Rohit in the second Test and it seemed that a stronger India will put more pressure on Australia, but the result of the second game was opposite. Against the run of play, Australia bounced back and registered a one-sided 10-wicket win over the visitors.

With two matches done, the series is levelled at 1-1 and the winner of the third game is definitely going to have a superb advantage from this point. This makes the third game all-more crucial.
