Mumbai:

A died by suicide after jumping off the Atal Setu in Mumbai which connects the city with neighbouring Navi Mumbai, the police said. The body is yet to be recovered from the sea, the cops added.

Around 10 am today, a man stopped his car – a red Maruti Brezza – a man jumped off the building, the police said after accessing the CCTV footage. The identity of the man is yet to be ascertained, the cops added.

Atal Setu is India’s longest sea bridge, stretching over 8 kilometres and connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. It was inaugurated in January this year.

Several incidents have taken place on the bridge where people have tried to die by suicide by jumping off the bridge.

In August, a woman attempted to jump off the Atal Setu but was saved by a cab driver and police personnel. The dramatic rescue was captured on CCTV, showing the driver and police pulling the woman to safety.

In the video, she can be seen sitting on the safety barrier of Atal Setu. She then throws something into the sea and attempts to jump off, before being saved by the driver just in time.

In July,  a Tata Nexon stopped on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and a 38-year-old man stepped out of the car, went over to the bridge’s railing, and jumped to his death.

Just three months after the bridge was inaugurated, a 43-year-old doctor jumped off the bridge and left a suicide note for her father.

The dramatic rescue was captured on CCTV

Mumbai:

A woman attempted to jump off the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu, in Mumbai but was saved by a cab driver and police personnel on Friday evening. The dramatic rescue was captured on CCTV, showing the driver and police pulling the woman to safety.

The woman has been identified as 56-year-old Reema Mukesh Patel and is a resident of Mulund, a suburb in the north-east of Mumbai.

In the video, she can be seen sitting on the safety barrier of Atal Setu. She then throws something into the sea and attempts to jump off, before being saved by the driver just in time.

A patrolling vehicle can then be seen rushing to the spot and assisting the driver in holding her. The woman was finally saved after over a minute of daring rescue operation.

“Responding promptly to an attempt to die by suicide at MTHL Atal Setu, the on-duty officials, Lalit Shirsat, Kiran Mahtre, Yash Sonawane and Mayur Patil jumped over the railing and rescued the individual saving her life,” Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar said in a post on X.

“I request citizens to value the gift of life and not act on impulse in such circumstances. Never forget, your loved ones deserve better,” he added.

Last month, a 38-year-old man jumped to his death from the bridge. CCTV footage from the bridge had shown K Shriniwas, an engineer and a resident of Dombivli, driving his car to the Nhava Sheva end of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and parking it before dying by suicide.

Nana Patole inspecting the Atal Bridge in Mumbai

Mumbai:

Cameramen in tow, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole pointed to the cracks on the road, alleging corruption in the construction of Atul Setu sea bridge, also known as Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), which connects south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, within months of inauguration.

Mr Patole, who inspected the bridge during the day, claimed that the construction quality of the bridge was poor and that a portion of the road has caved in by one foot. A wooden stick in hand, he lowered it in the gap between the cracks, spotlighting the seriousness of the matter.

“A portion of the Atal Setu bridge has developed cracks within three months of the inauguration and a half-a-kilometre-long stretch of the road near Navi Mumbai has caved in by a foot. The state has spent Rs 18,000 crore for the MTHL,” said Mr Patole.

However, the ruling BJP as well as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is the nodal agency for the project, said that the cracks were not on the bridge itself but on the approach road from Ulwe in Navi Mumbai.

“There have been rumours circulating about cracks on the MTHL bridge. We want to clarify that these cracks are not on the bridge itself but on the approach road connecting MTHL from Ulwe towards Mumbai,” said the MMRDA.

“Stop maligning Atal Setu,” the BJP posted on X.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted that there is no danger to Atal Setu and termed the allegations as part of Congress’ “long term plan to create a rift with the help of lies”.

“There is no crack on Atal Setu. Nor is there any danger to Atal Setu. This picture is of the approach road. But one thing is clear that the Congress party has made a long term plan to create a rift with the help of lies. Talks of constitutional amendments during elections, unlocking of EVMs through phone after elections and now such lies. Only the people of the country will defeat this ‘Darar’ plan and the corrupt behaviour of Congress,” Devendra Fadnavis posted on X.

Built at a cost of Rs 17,840 crore, this six-lane bridge is 21.8 km long with a 16.5 km section over the sea

“This is a service road. This is a connecting part of the main bridge. These are minor cracks and they are being filled up and will be repaired by today itself. There has been no traffic disruption because of this,” said Kailash Ganatra, Project Head, Atal Setu, PKG4.

Eknath Shinde at the launch of NDTV Marathi in Mumbai

A steel project in Gadchiroli, infamous for its Maoist footprint, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, Atal Setu are some of the infrastructure projects that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shine spotlighted on Monday to underscore his government’s focus on development.

Mr Shinde – speaking at the launch of NDTV’s new regional channel, NDTV Marathi – said the state government is reaping the benefits of double-engine government (BJP at the centre and in alliance in state).

“If we look at Maharashtra in two years, Atal Setu is a game-changer project. Mumbai Coastal Road has also been started from one side. We gave momentum to many projects,” said Mr Shinde.

The Atal Setu, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January, is a 21.8-kilometre-long bridge that connects Sewri in Mumbai and the Nhava Sheva area in Raigad district. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has been built at a cost of Rs 17,840 crore and is the longest sea bridge in the country.

“The Samruddhi Highway (Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway), the Metro car shed are symbols of our development work,” the Chief Minister said.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt, a joint venture of the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group, is the biggest of its kind in Asia, Mr Shinde said.

The Maharashtra government last year approved the Adani Group’s bid to redevelop the area that covers 625 acres (253 hectares), and has been described by officials as “the world’s largest urban renewal scheme”.

The project is a key step in reimagining one of the largest and most vibrant informal settlements in Asia. Singapore serves as an inspiring example for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. In the 1960s, Singapore’s landscape was dotted with shanties, slums and ghettos, strikingly similar to today’s Dharavi. From these modest beginnings, the Singapore Housing Development Board crafted over 1.2 million homes.

Over the past couple of years, the state government has also started a steel unit in Gadchiroli that gave employment to 10,000 people, with an aim to reduce Maoist activities in the area.

“My government also signed MoUs worth Rs 1.36 lakh crore at WEF Davos last year. Removing the paperwork helped implement these MoUs at lightning speed,” the Chief Minister underlined.
