A fearless “all or nothing” lap from McLaren’s Lando Norris in wet and wild conditions Friday denied Lewis Hamilton pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race. Hamilton thought he had claimed Shanghai pole in his Mercedes when Norris’s lap of 1min 57.940sec on intermediate wet tyres was deleted for exceeding track limits, only to be dramatically reinstated a minute later. Fernando Alonso in an Aston Martin showed his experience and guile to come third in the treacherous conditions with championship leader Max Verstappen fourth.

It was a second career sprint pole for Norris.

“It was tricky, you are always nervous going into a session like this,” said the Englishman.

“You just have to risk a lot, push and build tyre temperature and what not.

“You only get three laps. The first two I aborted on both, so it was all or nothing.”

Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez was sixth, splitting the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, who survived a big spin.

“It was just like driving on ice,” said Verstappen, whose final lap time was deleted after a trip across the gravel outside the final bend.

“That is why also I think we deserved to be where we are in qualifying, it isn’t really working for me in the wet but it is not where we are in the dry.”

Hamilton has endured a poor start to 2024 but was clearly looking forward to starting from the front row.

“So happy, as soon as I saw the rain coming I was getting excited. In dry conditions we’re not quick enough.”

Alonso was also thankful for the late rain. “We were not super competitive on the dry,” he said.

“In the wet it was difficult to judge the level of grip and risk we wanted to apply but in the end I am happy.”

Fifth-placed Sainz said the rain and cool conditions made it very difficult to get his intermediate tyres warmed up.

“We didn’t manage to switch on the tyres so we couldn’t push,” said the Spaniard, the only driver to win a race this season apart from Verstappen.

Formula One is back in China for the first time since 2019, when Hamilton won.

Hometown hero Zhou

A big crowd at the Shanghai International Circuit let out a huge roar when their hometown hero Zhou Guanyu made it into the third qualifying session.

He will start Saturday morning’s sprint from 10th for Sauber.

The 24-year-old Zhou was elevated to F1 in 2022, but has had to wait till his third season to make his home debut because of the pandemic.

Zhou is yet to score a 2024 championship point but has given himself a great chance with a near-flawless qualifying show.

Every lap in his bright green Sauber was greeted by massive cheers from the grandstand opposite the pit lane as his times appeared on the scoreboard.

“We will give it everything,” Zhou said. “I am just happy with the first day and great to have everyone here.

“The pressure before the weekend was so extreme, like I felt when I made my debut.”

Verstappen, who has won three out of four grands prix this season, again looked quickest until the rain came near the end of SQ2.

It sets up an intriguing 19-lap sprint battle Saturday morning as the three-time world champion attempts to find his way past Alonso, Hamilton and Norris.

“We have to try and have the best start possible,” said Verstappen.

“And then I think it will be quite a long stint on one set of tyres in the sprint.”

Hamilton said his fate lay with the weather gods.

“It really depends what the conditions will be like,” said the seven-time world champion, who has won a record six grands prix in Shanghai.

“If they are like they were just now we have a chance of being up there.”

The number of luxury cars in India recorded a sharp increase in the last five years, an analysis of vehicle registration data shows. Nearly 5 lakh luxury cars have been registered till date in India across various Regional Transport Offices, according to the Vahan portal. Of them, close to 30% were registered in the 2020-2024 period. This number is significantly high considering that the first two years in this period coincided with the pandemic and various sections of the economy were still in the recovery phase in the following two years.

For this analysis, certain manufacturers were termed luxury brands based on reports published in various credible news portals. The selection includes the following manufacturers: Lamborghini, BMW India, Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Bentley Motors, Lexus Motors, Rolls Royce, Ferrari India, Audi AG, Aston Martin, Maserati, Acura Legend and Alfa Romeo. In some cases, the price of cars was also considered.

Table 1 | The table lists the luxury brand-wise number of cars registered in India till date (A), the number of cars registered between 2020 and 2024 (B), and the share (B as a % of A).

As stated earlier, the registrations of 30% of all luxury cars were done between 2020 and 2024. However, while some brands have gained popularity, others have not. For instance, over 40% of all the BMWs registered till date were purchased in 2020-2024; in contrast, the corresponding share for Audis was 7%. Similarly, 52% of Lamborghinis, 33% of Porsches, 30% of Jaguar Land Rovers, and 29% of Mercedes-Benz cars registered till today were purchased in 2020-2024. In contrast, the corresponding numbers were 10% for Rolls Royce cars, 13% for Bentleys, 8% for Ferraris, and 4% for Aston Martins. This shows that preferences have gone through a significant change in the past four years.

Chart 2 | The chart shows the number of luxury cars registered till date across various States along the horizontal axis. The farther to the right, the higher the number of luxury cars registered in the State.

There were also significant variations among States. Maharashtra leads the list by a wide margin with more than 94,000 such cars registered in the State till date. This is followed by Karnataka (56,396 cars), Delhi (49,971), Gujarat (42,101), and Tamil Nadu (40,423).

While absolute numbers are important, a comparison with non-luxury cars registered in the States provides a better picture. For this purpose, one luxury car registered in a State for every 1 lakh non-luxury cars is plotted on the vertical axis of Chart 2. The higher the State in the chart, the higher the luxury car concentration. Cars manufactured by Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota were considered non-luxury. For instance, in Maharashtra, for every 1 lakh non-luxury cars registered, there are 1,200 luxury cars. Notably, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Goa had a similar concentration of luxury cars. In the Union Territories of Chandigarh and Puducherry, the concentration was much higher. This was due to lower road tax and other fees, which significantly reduced the prices of such cars.

Table 3 | The table shows the same information as in Table 1 for States with a high number of luxury cars. Luxury brand-wise number of cars registered in India till date (A), the number of cars registered between 2020 and 2024 (B), and the share (B as a % of A).

Of the 154 Maseratis registered in India, 78 are in Tamil Nadu. Of the 723 Aston Martins registered in the country, 618 are in Karnataka. Maharashtra leads in registrations of Rolls Royce cars and Delhi leads in registrations of Alfa Romeo and Acura Legend.

The two thieves attacked the car owner and fled with his Aston Martin.

Two thieves barged into a garage in the US and stole an Aston Martin, shortly after the owner came back from a drive. A video posted by Westport Police Department in Connecticut shows the masked thieves running up behind the homeowner as he drives the sports car into his garage. They drag the man out of the blue convertible and drive away. The incident took place around 4pm on Sunday, the police further said on the social media platform.

The video also shows an argument between the carjackers and the homeowner. When the man refused to move, one of the robbers pulled him out and threw him on the floor, as seen in the clip.

The homeowner kept shouting for help, and asked someone inside the house to call the police.

“There have been no significant developments in the investigation as of this writing. The Aston Martin has not been recovered and there have been no arrests,” the West Port Police said on Facebook.

The police added that the robbers believed to have followed the owner of the Aston Martin to his house in a stole dark blue BMW.

“The complaint suffered minor injuries as a result of the assault but declined medical attention. Broadcast messages were sent to neighbouring towns and Connecticut State Police. Both of these vehicles were reported to be last seen traveling north on Route 8,” the Facebook post further said.

The Westport police warned residents to be extra aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behaviour to emergency number 911.
