Around 83% of candidates in Tamil Nadu lost their deposit in the recently concluded Assembly polls, followed by West Bengal, where 78% lost their security amount.

While 3,352 candidates forfeited their deposit in Tamil Nadu, in West Bengal, the figure stood at 2,298. Tamil Nadu also saw the largest number of candidates in the poll fray at 4,023, while the commensurate figure for West Bengal was 2,920, according to the data made available through the Election Commission website and the ECINET App.

An election security deposit is an amount that is to be deposited with the Returning Officer when a candidate files his or her nomination. The deposit has to be forfeited at an election if the number of valid votes polled by the candidate is less than 1/6th of the total number of valid votes polled.

As far as percentage was concerned, the least number (63%) of candidates lost their deposit in Assam, while in absolute numbers it was the Union Territory of Puducherry which at 220 saw the least number of contestants forfeiting their deposit.

Puducherry also had the least number of candidates in fray at 290.

While 563 out of 883 candidates forfeited their deposit in Kerala (63.75%), in Assam, 455 out of 722 candidates (63%) lost their stakes.

Tamil Nadu polled a total of 4,93,89,958 votes out of which 4,91,24,329 were valid, and in Kerala, the votes polled were 2,16,30,208 and out of them 2,14,71,988 were valid. Women voters recorded a turnout of 86.2% in Tamil Nadu, higher than the 83.77% among men. In Kerala, female voter participation stood at 81.17% against 74.9% among men.

The Union Territory of Puducherry saw 8,66,932 votes being cast, out of which 8,59,506 were valid.

The Index Cards and Statistical Reports have been published for all 830 Assembly constituencies which went to polls. Re-poll has been scheduled at 144-Falta constituency in West Bengal for May 21, 2026.

With its defeat in the Kerala Assembly election, the Left parties are not in power in any State for the first time since 1977. The setback has sharpened questions over the political strategy of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. During its campaign, the Congress had accused the ruling party of colluding with the BJP, with the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, branding the CPI(M) as the “Communist Janata Party”.

CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby rejected the charge, calling it a “deliberate” and “distorted” narrative aimed at tarnishing the party’s image. “CPI(M) stands by all sections of people, we have always supported the socially excluded both in terms of religion and caste,” he said.

Back in 2016, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made its historic entry into the Kerala Assembly with a win in Nemom, it was expected to propel the party’s expansion in the State. However, five years later, the party found itself reduced again to zero seats in the 140-member House. The setback forced it to go back to the drawing board to reorient its strategies to gain a foothold in a State which has remained mostly averse to its brand of saffron politics.

In the intervening years, it secured its first Lok Sabha seat and a historic win in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The momentum that the party built over the past two years appears to have kept the BJP in good stead as it secured three seats when the results of the Assembly elections were declared on Monday. Though its vote share hovered around 11%, much lesser than what it secured in previous elections, the political import of the three seats that it won, in a State which had remained almost impervious to it, was not lost on anyone. The party has made a significant step towards making a dent in the Left democratic Front (LDF)-United Democratic Front (UDF) duopoly which has dominated the State.

Repeatedly ignored: Congress demands immediate arrest of Papai Ghosh in Berhampore

Citing a “systematic breakdown of law and order,” the Congress party demanded the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for the immediate arrest of Papai Ghosh, whom they describe as a notorious repeat offender responsible for orchestrating violence in the Berhampore Assembly Constituency (AC-72).

The formal complaint, authored by Niloy Pramanik and addressed to Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, alleges that the administration’s continued inaction has directly “emboldened” Ghosh and his associates to carry out escalating acts of brutality.

Bengal | TMC’s Shashi Panja eyes 4th term as BJP fields new face in Shyampukur Assembly

Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate and State Minister Shashi Panja is seeking a fourth consecutive term from the Shyampukur Assembly constituency as West Bengal heads into a two-phased Assembly election on April 23 and 29.

Representing a key urban segment in North Kolkata, Panja faces Bharatiya Janata Party’s first-time candidate Poornima Chakraborty in what is expected to be a closely watched contest, even as the TMC attempts to retain its long-standing hold over the seat.

Shyampukur, a general category constituency under the Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha seat, holds significant political weight due to its urban character and historical electoral shifts. Shyampukur comprises of 11 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Historically, the seat witnessed prolonged dominance by the Forward Bloc, which won it 10 times, while Congress secured it on four occasions. However, since 2011, the Trinamool Congress has firmly established its grip over the constituency.

Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: Women leaders raise voices of protest over denial of seat

Congress leader Shama Mohamed has lashed out at the party leadership for overlooking women in the party’s candidate selection for the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala.

In a post on her Facebook page on Friday, a day after the Congress put out its list of candidates, she said that only nine out of the 92 candidates of the party are women.

“I have been rejected, but not defeated. I request my leader Rahul Gandhi, whom I admire, respect, and adore, to help the Congress women of Kerala. In the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, only one woman was given a ticket out of the 16 persons who contested. If a woman happens to be talented, the situation is dire,” she wrote.
