Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), headed by Himanta Biswa Sarma, met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday (May 10, 2026) to stake a claim to form the government.

The formality followed the election of Mr. Sarma as the leader of the NDA in the 126-member Assam Assembly, paving the way for him to take oath as the Chief Minister for a second successive term. The swearing-in ceremony of the new council of ministers is scheduled for May 12.

The newly elected members of the BJP and its regional allies — Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — chose their leader in the morning. Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were the central observer and co-observer for the BJP Legislature Party meeting at the party headquarters.

Announcing Mr. Sarma’s name as the unanimously elected NDA leader, Mr. Nadda said eight BJP legislators proposed his name for the top post. “We are grateful to the people of Assam for showing their faith in the NDA once again to take the State on the path of progress,” he said.

“All legislators voted for Himanta Biswa Sarma as their leader. AGP president Atul Bora and BPF leader Rihon Daimary supported the proposal. Later, we staked claim to form the government with the support of 102 MLAs,” Mr Nadda said, adding that the new government would adhere to the Centre’s “new culture” of being proactive, responsive, and accountable.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, several other central ministers, and the BJP’s national president would attend the oath-taking ceremony.

The Assam elections were held in a single phase on April 9. The BJP overcame the challenge from a Congress-led opposition front of six parties to bag 82 seats, 18 more than the simple majority mark, while the AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.

The Congress managed 19 seats, the fewest since 2016, while its ally Raijor Dal and the minority-based All India United Democratic Front won two seats each. The remaining seat went to the Trinamool Congress.

For the first time in Assam, the Treasury and the Opposition benches would be divided on religious lines. All the successful NDA candidates are followers of Hinduism and indigenous faiths, while all but two of their 24 opposition counterparts are Muslims.

Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the people of Maharashtra and its ruling alliance.

Guwahati:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said he is “deeply pained” by the BJP’s poll debacle in Jharkhand which he had described his “second home” a few days ago.

He also congratulated the people of Maharashtra and the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance for retaining power, while expressing gratitude to the people of Assam for supporting NDA nominees in by-polls in all five seats in Assam.

Sarma, the party’s co-in-charge for Jharkhand polls, congratulated the JMM for its impressive victory in Jharkhand while asserting that the NDA wanted to protect the state from infiltration and to lead it towards the path of development.

“The loss in Jharkhand is deeply painful for me personally, even though we secured victory in all five by-elections in Assam,” Sarma said in a post on X.

The BJP leader said he is humbly accepting the mandate of the people, for that is the true essence of democracy.

“I have witnessed the unwavering dedication and relentless efforts of our Karyakartas in Jharkhand, who gave their all in this election. We fought with a vision to protect the state from infiltration and to lead it on the path of development, fulfilling the aspirations of students and youth,” Sarma added.

During the electioneering, the BJP focused on “infiltration from Bangladesh” and alleged corruption of the JMM-led coalition, which is now set to storm back to power for the second time in a row.

“JMM and its allies have secured an impressive victory in Jharkhand. My heartfelt congratulations to Shri @HemantSorenJMM and his entire team on this achievement. I am confident that under his leadership, Jharkhand will embark on a path of progress and development,” Sarma said.

As the BJP’s co-in-charge of the Jharkhand election, Sarma frequently visited that state and addressed numerous public meetings. On November 19, he said in an X post: “Over the past four months, Jharkhand has truly felt like a second home to me.” The Assam CM also expressed his gratitude to the people of his state for their support to the NDA candidates through another post on the micro-blogging site.

“The NDA’s 5/5 victory in the current by-elections is a resounding testament to Assam’s unwavering support for Adarniya @narendramodi Ji’s vision of good governance and development,” Sarma said.

“A special mention for Samaguri, a constituency with a 65% minority population, held by Congress for 25 years, now won by the BJP. This historic victory reaffirms people’s trust in our welfare agenda and their firm rejection of the Opposition’s divisive politics,” he added.

Though the counting of votes for the Samaguri constituency is yet to be over, the BJP candidate has attained an unassailable lead.

“A big shoutout to our dedicated Karyakartas who took our message of development to every booth!” he added.

The BJP has already won in Behali and Dholai, and its allies AGP and UPPL in Bongaigaon and Sidli constituencies respectively.

Sarma also congratulated the people of Maharashtra and its ruling alliance for retaining power.

“On behalf of the people of Assam, we offer our heartfelt congratulations to the people of Maharashtra and each and every karyakartas of #MahaYuti for this historic mandate. This win exemplifies the deep bond people share with Adarniya @narendramodi Ji and his agenda for a Viksit Bharat,” he wrote on X.

“Last but not the least, these results also demonstrate the power of #ek hain toh safe hai!” he added.

Himanta Sarma ended his meetings by dancing to the BJP’s theme song ‘Akou ebar Modi sorkar’

Guwahati:

If his fiery speeches draw crowds to meetings, it’s the ‘dancing’ skills of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that literally get the public on their feet.

With electioneering heating up in this Northeastern state where polling for the 14 Lok Sabha seats is scheduled in the first three phases on April 19, 26 and May 7, the BJP’s star campaigner is out with his dancing moves to attract voters.

As Mr Sarma campaigned across the Jorhat constituency on Saturday, he ended his meetings by dancing to the BJP’s theme song ‘Akou ebar Modi sorkar’ (Modi’s government, once more), inviting enthusiastic participation from the audience.

Be it at the end of the rally in Sivsagar or in Mariani, the CM sang and danced, while urging the public to join, who readily obliged and joined their leader from the stands.

Accompanied by clapping and occasional jumps with fists in the air, Mr Sarma’s trademark moves added energy to his campaign.

In his speeches, Mr Sarma outlined the various welfare measures of the BJP-led governments both at the Centre and the state, and exhorted the public to vote for PM Modi for a third successive term.

Sharing a video of his lively campaign dance on X on Friday with the public joining him from the stands, he wrote: “We are #ModiKaParivaar. Of course, we sing and dance in our rallies.” Mr Sarma’s dance moves had garnered much attention during the 2019 parliamentary elections when he had swung along the tunes of ‘Akou ebar Modi Sorkar’ and other BJP campaign songs on the dais and during roadshows.

The BJP has nine MPs in the outgoing Lok Sabha from Assam, which has been its best show in the state so far, with Mr Sarma exuding confidence of winning at least 13 seats this time.

The BJP is contesting in 11 seats, leaving two for its ally Asom Gana Parishad and one for United People’s Party Liberal.

The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have engaged in a war of words over Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s ‘Akbar’ remark made during a public speech in poll-bound Chhattisgarh’s Kawardha.

The Congress on October 26 moved to the Election Commission (EC) against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging a poll code violation by the latter during a speech made in poll-bound Chhattisgarh.

Taking to ‘X’, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote, “Yesterday, the Congress party brought to the attention of the Election Commission of India serious electoral malpractices by senior leaders of the party in power. The ECI has observed prima facie the violation of the Model Code of Conduct by the Assam CM for his obnoxious hate speech on the 18th of October in Chhattisgarh. He is actually a serial offender”.

“We hope that the ECI will follow through and take this case to its logical conclusion. Politicians, especially those holding Constitutional positions, cannot and should not be allowed to get away with such blatant violations of the Model Code of Conduct. It is the only way to stop the poisoning of our public discourse and protect the sanctity of our elections and democracy itself”, he added.

Following this, the EC issued a show-cause notice to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma over his speech during the Chhattisgarh poll campaign. The Election Commission (EC) in the show-cause notice mentioned that certain parts of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s speech on October 18 have been found to be “prima facia violative”.

The EC has asked Assam CM Himanata Biswa Sarma to be present before 5 p.m. on October 30, 2023.”You are hereby called upon to show cause by 17:00 hrs of 30th October 2023, (Monday) as to why appropriate action of violation on Model code of conduct should not be taken against you.”, the notice read.

The notice further mentioned that in case of the absence of the BJP leader, the Election Commission will take appropriate action or decision. Meanwhile, in response to the allegation by the Congress party, Assam CM took to ‘X’ and wrote, “Congress has withheld the material information from the Hon’ble Election Commission that Mohammed Akbar is their candidate from Kawardha Constituency. Therefore legitimate criticism of a candidate does not amount to communal politics”.

“Congress will have to face the legal consequence of not revealing this crucial fact in their representation. I have full faith in the collection wisdom of the Hon’ble Election Commission”, he added.
